okay i know i’ve made like four posts about this but like…would anyone read it if i wrote…like…a single “high school musical: on stage” fanfiction? not even about troy or gabriella but about like…kelsi…eating lunch in darbus’s classroom…and like…she hates jack scott…and so they pull pranks on him…is this too niche?

Week ending: 20th November

And from last week's madcap bop, we've slowed things right down, for a late night slow dance of a song, if ever I heard one. Seriously, this song is made for the back half of a 1950s high school prom.

My True Love - Jack Scott (peaked at Number 9)

It took me a while to place it, but I think the prom vibe comes from this being a waltz, a slow, elegant 3/4 time, complete with guitar arpeggios in the background playing a simple but distinctively rock and roll chord progression, with lots of deep bass backing singers singing these long, sustained notes. It's very smooth, very sweet.

And then, Jack Scott, singing about how I prayed to the Lord to send me a love / He sent me an angel from heaven above. So far, so straightforward. And actually, the rest of the song doesn't get much more complex than that. The angel is his true love, and better than anything he ever knew until the Lord above sent me you. You really don't get such sincere, simple lyrics nowadays, and it's a shame - what they lack in memorability, they more than make up for in earnest romance. Or perhaps I'm just in a slightly mushy mood today.

I think Jack's delivery that helps here. He's got a soft, gentle voice, good but not too polished. It's a realistic voice, with more than a bit of a country twang, or at least some sort of down-to-earth, distinct accent, and is all blends nicely with the backing singers and the bass saxophone (?) to create this very warm, appealing mix. It kind of reminds me of somebody else, but I can't pinpoint exactly who. Either way, there's a spoken word bit that Jack slips into pretty naturally halfway through, and then we're back to singing, as we finish up.

I will say, the melody is boring. Almost every line is exactly the same, and there's not much to break it up. It's the sort of thing you don't notice immediately, but then the song's coming to an end, and you realise that you can't remember any specific parts of the song, just an overall impression of it being solidly okay. And the more I've listened, the more that's been annoying me. There's only so many times you can hear the words my true love to exactly the same tune before you get sick of it.

I didn't mind this at all. Like I said, it's the sort of tune you could put on in the background at a 1950s prom. You wouldn't want it as your final dance - not nearly memorable enough - but as a sort of slow, pleasant thing to drift around to, it's fine. Jack Scott was a complete unknown to me, and as introductions go, this one's fine.
