His desires this time are unapologetically, uneuphemistically carnal, not to mention all-enveloping: he wants not only to be “our” lover, but our "brother", “mother,” and our “sister, too”; and, of course, he wants to be “the only one who makes you come running”–with just enough of a pause after the word “come” to ensure we pick up what he’s putting down...Like its sister song of sorts, “I Feel for You,” “I Wanna Be Your Lover” was written for ‪#PatriceRushen‬, another up-and-coming artist who had lent some uncredited synthesizer to Prince’s first album. He offered the song for Rushen to include on her own 1979 album, Pizzazz, but he was also inspired by her on a deeper level; according to his unpublished liner notes for Warner’s The Hits compilation, he “had a mad crush on her at the time and the song is about her”.' From princevault.com: '"I Wanna Be Your Lover" is the first Prince video to have been broadcast as no videos were made for either of the two previous singles "Soft And Wet" and "Just As Long As We're Together". The video shows Prince singing, playing various instruments: keyboards, drums, guitar and bass. He is also seen dancing and playing with a red scarf attached to his mic. We've reached the point in Prince history where Allen Beaulieu began working with Prince and the band. Allen's photos of Prince are the first ones I remember seeing, and they etched themselves into the folds of my brain. His images introduced me to a world I still want to inhabit decades later, and all I need to do is look at them to be transported. His book, 'Prince: Before the Rain' is extraordinary, sublime, delicious - and the forward, by Dez Dickerson is so perfect, I wanted to include the whole thing, but here’s an excerpt: 'Few artists legitimately bear the label of icon, and fewer icons are more synonymous with visual image than Prince. One man who was as responsible as anyone alive for capturing that iconic image is photographer Allen Beaulieu. Few people can say that their work helped to shape the image of a legend—Al can...Doing promo photos as a band in a photo studio was very much a new thing. Before that, there hadn't been any sort of visual component or brand consciousness. It had been purely about playing music together. Then we entered a whole new world of finding out how we mixed and meshed visually. We encountered that working with Al. We took a giant step toward becoming a band...His photographs of an artist heading down the path toward superstardom graced album covers, posters, and magazines everywhere, imprinting the images in the minds of fans for decades to come.
