Artist @asherald 's "Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance)" is this week's @newyorkermag cover. I am so excited that her traveling exhibition "Amy Sherald: American Sublime" lands in #NYC at the @whitneymuseum on April 9!

Image & caption reposted from @newyorkermag The cover of this week’s Spring Style & Design issue is “Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance),” by Amy Sherald (@asherald). Read the full cover story:

Images & caption reposted from @hyperallergic A sweeping exhibition of works by the acclaimed American #painter #AmySherald, best known for her portraits of former First Lady Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor, is coming to New York City this spring. Nearly 50 portraits of Black Americans will go on display as part of “Amy Sherald: American Sublime” at the Whitney Museum of American Art from April 9 through August 10. The mid-career survey is the artist’s first solo exhibition in a New York museum.
Spanning works from 2007 to the present, the show will explore Sherald’s signature figures rendered with skin tones in shades of gray and colorful clothing against vibrant backgrounds, merging black-and-white photography aesthetics and American Realist painting traditions to redress art history’s long exclusion of Black subjects in portraiture.

#SundaySermon by @soul.bounce:

"Go to the show.
Go to the concert.
Go to the music festival.
Go on the music cruise.
Go see the legends, your favorites and new artists you dig perform live whenever and wherever you can because you never know if you'll get that opportunity again."
If you REALLY know me, you already know that THIS is exactly how I live. I am so grateful for every live music experience I am blessed to enjoy. My love for concerts, festivals and travel is how I've connected with some of the greatest people I know. Music made us family.
The recent passing of so many of our musical legends has affirmed this for me, and I'm planning to go even harder, 'til the wheels fall off...
#AssembleYourCrew, or go solo ... Just ... do it...
Prioritize your joy through music, and support your favorite artists!

Happy #HaitianIndependenceDay!
Reposted from @cccadi Swipe 👈🏿
Today is not only the first day of the new year, it is also the 220th anniversary of Haiti's independence. As we kick off 2024, we honor Haiti as the first Black independent republic in the world and as a catalyst for freedom for the entire African Diaspora.
In the spirit of revolution and Black freedom, we are using this significant moment in history to kick off this year with intention. CCCADI will honor Haiti's legacy by anchoring much of our 2024 programming in our theme, Lakay se Lakay, which means Home is Home in Kreyòl (Creole).
Lakay se Lakay offers us an opportunity to use Haiti as a lens through which we pay homage to our people's ability to create and hold on to home, wherever we are.
Stay tuned for more information about our Lakay se Lakay themed programs.

Only a few more days left to see "Calida Rawles - A Certain Oblivion" at Lehmann Maupin Gallery. It closes December 16. GO...
📍501 W 24th Street, #NYC
@calidagarciarawles
@lehmannmaupin

■
https://www.lehmannmaupin.com/exhibitions/calida-rawles2/press-release
"Lehmann Maupin presents A Certain Oblivion, an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Calida Rawles. This is her first major solo exhibition in New York, following an In Focus exhibition with the gallery in 2021. Featuring Rawles’ most monumentally scaled works to date, A Certain Oblivion celebrates hope as an expression of our shared humanity in the face of dark times. The power of Rawles’ proposition is embodied in her subjects: young women and girls who float and tread—alone and in community—in uncertain waters. They are the next generation, women whose graceful determination to transcend the riptides of contemporary American life belies the effort required to keep their heads above water. Rawles’ newest body of work reminds us that their triumph is our salvation."

Reposted from @calidagarciarawles Thank you, @cnnstyle and @suyinsays , for describing my practice and new body of work so beautifully.
“But I try to think of that as a moment where you can reflect and restart,” she continued. “Before there’s light, there’s darkness.”
This re-examination of darkness then forms the inspiration for Rawles’ latest body of work, “A Certain Oblivion.” Across a series of 10 large-scale paintings, Rawles captures the movement of young women and girls suspended in water, hovering just near the surface. Swirling pools of opaque blackness give the images a sense of uncertainty, but the subjects’ faces and bodies are positioned toward the light, conveying hope with a celestial presence amid the heaviness.

"Going Dark: The Contemporary Figure at the Edge of Visibility,"
curated by Dr. Ashley James @ohashuhlee,
is on view at The Guggenheim Museum @guggieheim now
through April 7, 2024.
https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/going-dark-the-contemporary-figure-at-the-edge-of-visibility

Profile reposted from @thecut www.thecut.com/2023/10/ashley-james-guggenheim-going-dark-interview.html
How do people want to be seen, if they even want to be seen at all?
That’s the question at the center of “Going Dark: The Contemporary Figure at the Edge of Visibility,” the latest Guggenheim Museum exhibition curated by Dr. Ashley James. She arrived at the phrase “going dark” one night when scrolling on her phone, jotting exhibition title ideas in her Notes App. “We know if somebody says, ‘You went dark on me,’ they’re saying, ‘You didn’t reply to my text,’” she tells me on a recent afternoon at the Guggenheim’s Financial District offices. “It’s also resonant in terms of darkness as a concept. The darkness that is literally Blackness. I’m well aware of the cheekiness of ‘going dark’ and what it means for it to be a Black rotunda show in the museum that does not have a track record of having Black artists at all, let alone in the rotunda. It clicks.”
