Blockbuster winter and spring 2017 Montréal museum exhibitions
Famed Russian-French artist Marc Chagall, French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier and legendary Canadian photographer William Notman take centre stage in blockbuster exhibitions at Montréal museums this winter and spring 2017.

Chagall: Colour and Music at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is the largest exhibition ever devoted to Marc Chagall (1887-1985) in Canada, featuring some 500 works and documents—paintings, collages, watercolours, sculptures, stained glass windows and ceramics—which show how Chagall’s aesthetic and artistic world is imbued with music. The exhibition includes his creations for the stage, notably 40 rarely-seen costumes and sets for the ballets and operas Aleko (1942), The Firebird (1945), Daphnis et Chloé (1958) and The Magic Flute (1967). No less than famed art critic Robert Hughes called Chagall “the quintessential Jewish artist of the 20th century.” Chagall: Colour and Music runs from January 28 to June 11.
After such a great adventure, “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” seen by two million visitors in twelve cities over five years couldn’t end like this… As cherry on the cake, as a very early Christmas gift or as a 2017 good resolution, the @mbamtl is presenting a surprise return of the most incredible wedding moments by #JeanPaulGaultier from May 27th until October 9th, 2017 in Montréal! #LoveIsLove

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts brings iconic French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier back to Montréal for its Love Is Love by Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition showcasing Gaultier-designed wedding gowns. The exhibition features 30 creations—some being displayed for the first time—and underscores love and diversity by celebrating straight, gay, intercultural and interracial unions. Love Is Love runs from May 30 to September 3.
While you are at the MMFA, make a point of checking out the Work in Progress self-portrait installation by Montréal artist Pierre Ayot on display until March 19.
Over at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (known as “the MAC” by locals), For Time Is the Longest Distance Between Two Places is an intriguing exhibition of 20 pieces drawn from the MAC’s extensive permanent collection of contemporary art. Running until March 12,  the exhibition—whose title is taken from The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams—juxtaposes the works of several artists (including Nicolas Baier, Patrick Bernatchez, Alain Paiement and Serge Tousignant) exploring humankind’s need to define our relationship with time and space.
While at the MAC, do not miss two other exhibitions: Now Have a Look at This Machine by Québec artist Emanuel Licha features an installation version of his hour-long creative documentary Hotel Machine filmed in five cities—Beirut, Sarajevo, Gaza, Kiev and Belgrade—in five hotels that house war correspondents covering conflicts; and Mundos, the first-ever solo show in Canada by famed Mexican artist Teresa Margolles. Both exhibitions run from February 16 to May 14.
“Notman, A Visionary Photographer” is a surprisingly wonderful retrospective of the Canadian great William Notman’s photography. #photolife #willtravelforart #notmanmccord

Meanwhile, as part of Montréal’s 375th anniversary celebrations and the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, the McCord Museum presents Notman, A Visionary Photographer, a major exhibition on the life and work of the most important internationally-recognized 19th century Canadian photographer whose portraits and landscapes helped build the Canadian identity. This exhibition features some 300 photographs and objects drawn primarily from the McCord Museum’s priceless Notman Collection which contains some 450,000 photographs from Notman’s Montréal studio. The exhibition’s accompanying 240-page hardcover book is a definitive study of the artist. Notman, A Visionary Photographer runs to March 26.
Two other much-anticipated exhibitions at the McCord are Fashioning Expo 67 (March 17 to October 1) which revisits the world exposition that marked Canada’s Centennial and showcased Montréal designers and Canadian fashion for 50 million international visitors; and Aislin: Fifty Years of Cartoons (April 7 to August 13),  a career retrospective of Aislin, the dean of English-Canadian cartoonists.

Last but not least, Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Archaeology and History Complex, presents the world-premiere of the From the Lands of Asia exhibition which features some 450 pieces from the Sam and Myrna Myers Collection which houses one of the world’s most extensive private collections of ancient jade. This exhibition’s jade gallery boasts a captivating set of imperial Chinese armour adorned with golden dragons. The exhibition also includes a selection of pieces from classical antiquity, ivories, impressive Buddhist icons, porcelain and silks. From the Lands of Asia runs until March 19.

The San Francisco Arts Commission @sf_arts_commission, in partnership with the Port of San Francisco, are pleased to announce the installation of a nine-foot-tall bronze sculpture by British artist Thomas J Price on San Francisco’s Embarcadero promenade between Pier 1 and the Ferry Building.
As Sounds Turn to Noise, 2023, measuring 110 3/8 high x 47 1/2” wide x 32 3/4” deep, will be on site for a period of six months through January 2025, with the possibility of an extension. The larger-than-life bronze sculpture depicts a young Black woman dressed in jogging attire. The subject of the bronze works that are part of this sculpture series are a composite of multiple people from observations and amalgamated photographs taken by the artist, as well as 3D scanning that took place during an open call in LA summer 2022.
The artist challenges existing norms of who gets to be memorialized in bronze, wanting people to feel valued and respected, heard, and seen.
“When it comes to public art, who gets to decide who is memorialized? With his larger-than-life sculptures, Thomas J Price makes it possible for everyday people, especially Black men and women who are often not represented in sculptural art, to see themselves reflected,” said Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs. “The Arts Commission is thrilled to partner with the Port of San Francisco to bring As Sounds Turn to Noise to our City’s beautiful and iconic waterfront where visitors and locals alike will be able to experience it up close and personal.”
Thomas J Price is a British sculptor who lives and works in London. His work has been exhibited internationally; however, this is the first time one of his sculptures is being displayed in a public outdoor space in California. #theblackbayarea #BlackArt #BlackArtists #BlackGirlArtGeeks #WillTravelForArt #PublicArt
