🎨#ArtIsAWeapon @cultured_mag featured fearless artist @asherald and master musician @jonbatiste for its Winter 2024 Artists on Artists issue. Photo by @danascruggs.

Image and caption reposted from @cultured_mag This winter, CULTURED presents our inaugural Artists on Artists issue. An ode to unfettered creativity, bold experimentation, and collaboration, this edition includes a trio of cover conversations between figures—from filmmakers to painters and musicians—who are committed to illuminating our strange, uncertain moment...
It’s been a busy year for the history-making painter and musician. Amy Sherald just opened “American Sublime,” her mid-career survey and largest exhibition yet, at the @sfmoma; while Jon Batiste returned to his classical roots with his recent album “Beethoven Blues,” which presents modern renditions of the canonical composer’s works.
Despite their sweeping impacts on contemporary culture, both artists—shot by @danascruggs in Sherald’s New Jersey studio—are careful to protect the delicate filament, that “pure thing,” at the heart of their work. “When you’re in that flow state, sometimes you forget how you got to the end result. I feel like a vessel. I work hard so I can then be in the moment like a kid,” Batiste tells Sherald. “It’s like a trance,” the painter adds. “The ideas come, and I do what I’m told.”
To read the full conversation between Amy Sherald and Jon Batiste and [order] your copy of the Artists on Artists issue, head to the link in bio.
Amy wears a dress by @gabrielahearst, earrings by @davidyurman, and bracelets and a ring by @vancleefarpels. Jon wears a suit, shirt, and tie by @ysl; ring by @cartier; and shoes by @louboutinworld. Additional jewelry is musician’s own.

This exhibition beings together over 20 artists to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Charlie Ahearn ( @twincharlie )’s seminal film ‘Wild Style’🔥

In the words of the curator Carlo McCormick-
“While ‘Wild Style 40’ is in many ways a celebration of the graffiti art form that emerged out of this time and starred in the movie, it is centered within a broader circle of participation, including key figures from Colab, who were also forging new kinds of urban art, artists who were major supporters and benefactors of graffiti, the photographers who not only captured this movement but embodied it, and a few who have somehow carried these traditions with an authenticity and ingenuity that goes beyond what hip hop sounds like or graffiti looks like today.”

-Maya Angelou
I’ve found so much beauty in growth lately. Growth can be painful and uncomfortable but ultimately unavoidable. How then, can we make the most of it? By standing up and pressing through, knowing that there is power and beauty in the end result.
Children often are the greatest models for how we should approach growth. They are eager and excited for the next step in life. When you’re looking for inspiration look to them. Then, stand up straight.

CONGRATULATIONS BISA!

Reposted from @bisabutler No entertainment on earth can match a good story compellingly told
- #OctaviaButler (1947-2006)
This is history being made! This is the first time a portrait of an African American woman, created by an African American woman, curated by an African American woman and purchased by an African American collectors collective has been entered into the permanent collection of the #NationalPortraitGallery.
This story begins with me in 1993 reading Imago by Octavia Butler in the library at the National Portrait Gallery while I was a student at #HowardUniversity .
The library was a refuge of calm and a place where I could dream and aspire. The words of Octavia Butler allowed me to imagine a world beyond my reality- through the eyes of a Black woman.

It was serendipity to be asked by The New York Times to create a portrait for the cover of the Arts and Leisure section and the gorgeous photo by @alice_a2studio captivated me.

Then fate shined on me again when my Howard sister #RheaCombs, the chief curator at The National Portrait Gallery asked if the portrait was available.
I said yes immediately and she reached out to the Black Commissioners and Collectors group for financial support and as it goes the money was raised in 17 minutes!
I want to send a huge thank you to Curator Rhea Combs, and Director Kim Sajet. Thank you to the collective ; Taylor and Wemimo Abbey wemsabbey ; Sol Aponte @solaponte and Jennia Fredrique Aponte @jenniafredrique ; Mahari Y. Bailey @mahariyared, Esq.; Lyndon J. and Janine Sherman Barrois @srbarroislyndon ; Ingrid Best @ms_ibest ; Devin W. Blackburn, Esq.; George Fatheree @fathereeleeo and Azita Fatheree; Kenneth T. Little; Nike Opadiran; Ayesha D. Selden @ayeshaselden .
Thank you Sheryll Cashin and Marque Chambliss for hosting!
Thank you to my home team @johnnyjbutler_ and @ehubbs37 for always being there and giving 1000%. You are so appreciated.

Excerpt from @AARP #DisruptAging:
"I have made so much art, and now Quiltuduko is my thing. It’s an art-making app that uses color and design — images instead of the number system of Sudoku. It’s a workout that requires memory and focus, and keeps that brain functioning — for young and old alike. Plus, it’s fun, and you have a piece of art to show for it. I have more than 60 diagrams now, and the themes are based on faces, angles, swirls. I can’t stop making them."

🖼Image: Say Her Name - Sandra Bland, 2020
🎨Artist: S.A.W. @iamsawart
📍Location: 75 John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE Atlanta Ga
This mural memorializes Sandra Bland, who died while in police custody 8 years ago today (July 13, 2015). Thinking of her mother and sister, who continue their fight for #JusticeForSandraBland
Reposted from @naacp_ldf Today marks [eight] years since Sandra Bland’s death. Sandra Bland was a 28-year-old civil rights activist who was taken into custody by former Texas Trooper Brian Encinia for an alleged traffic violation. The encounter escalated when the Trooper tried to yank Sandra Bland out of her vehicle for smoking a cigarette and pointed a stun gun in her face threatening to “light her up.” Encinia had initially claimed that Bland assaulted him. He was ultimately charged with perjury since his own dash cam proved that to be untrue. Three days after the arrest, Sandra Bland was found hanging in a Waller County Jail cell. The officers who falsified monitoring logs and claimed they checked in on Bland an hour before she was found hanging were quietly moved to other law enforcement roles. What exactly happened to Sandra Bland still largely remains a mystery and no one has been held accountable for her death.

🎨#ArtIsAWeapon #ExhibitClosing "Todd Gray: While Angels Gaze" closes at the Lehmann Maupin New York on Saturday, March 29.
📍501 W 24th St, #NYC, 10011
🎥✍️🏾 reposted from @lehmannmaupin Todd Gray’s solo exhibition, ‘While Angels Gaze’, is on view at our New York gallery through March 29.
Here, the artist speaks about his work from his studio in Los Angeles, offering firsthand perspective on his photo assemblages.
youtube
In his newest body of work, @ToddGrayLA integrates Roman Catholic imagery and architecture with photographs sourced from his own archive, including self portraits, images of the Ghanaian landscape, and figures from pop music. The mining of his multi-decade music photography archive is an important component of Gray’s practice and one that offers a view into the history of music, featuring recognizable figures from Al Green to Iggy Pop. In ‘While Angels Gaze’, Gray combines these titans of the music industry with images of Roman Catholic cathedrals and ancient Roman statuary, drawing parallels between religious or mythical personages and the idols of today. In these compositions, modern pop stars are cast as the contemporary equivalents of historical figures—where societies might once have inlaid images of saints in golden basilica ceilings or erected statues of religious leaders on building facades, modern idols play on elevated stages to crowds of tens of thousands, becoming enshrined as mass media icons.
Throughout the exhibition, Gray’s lens extends beyond imaging pop icons, with some works devoid of figures all together. In works like these, Gray moves beyond celebrity adoration to examine the veneration of other false gods—commerce, wealth, power—exploring the enduring nature and consequences of such idolatry across centuries.

Artist @asherald 's "Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance)" is this week's @newyorkermag cover. I am so excited that her traveling exhibition "Amy Sherald: American Sublime" lands in #NYC at the @whitneymuseum on April 9!

Image & caption reposted from @newyorkermag The cover of this week’s Spring Style & Design issue is “Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance),” by Amy Sherald (@asherald). Read the full cover story:

Images & caption reposted from @hyperallergic A sweeping exhibition of works by the acclaimed American #painter #AmySherald, best known for her portraits of former First Lady Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor, is coming to New York City this spring. Nearly 50 portraits of Black Americans will go on display as part of “Amy Sherald: American Sublime” at the Whitney Museum of American Art from April 9 through August 10. The mid-career survey is the artist’s first solo exhibition in a New York museum.
Spanning works from 2007 to the present, the show will explore Sherald’s signature figures rendered with skin tones in shades of gray and colorful clothing against vibrant backgrounds, merging black-and-white photography aesthetics and American Realist painting traditions to redress art history’s long exclusion of Black subjects in portraiture.
