Dino Quilt Layout Test with last minute color design change. (thinking stegosaurus in bottom right should be the darker blue with lighter blue accent and not the other way around.)
Also the backing fabric I ordered on spoonflower arrived and it is so cute!

If I cannot have a craft room then I will absolutely make my bedroom double for one
slippery slope
So the thing is with fibre crafts, and any hobby really, for the most part you don’t really need a lot or anything fancy. Bookbinding: paper, thread and needle; sewing/quilting/embroidery basically the same but fabric; crochet: hook, yarn, scissors; and so on. Buuuuuuut as you get more into it, you get better, learn more, it gets more complicated, and then you realise oh yeah there’s a tool for that, and it makes it easier, quicker, more accurate. Suddenly you have a box of scissors, enough hooks that you have to have an inventory, and so much paper it’s not funny ( don’t ask about the fabric stash, that’s a completely different hobby okay). That’s the whole point of a hobby, yes it’s as simple as you wanna make it, and it’s fun, full filling and gives this wonderful sense of accomplishment. Which is why stamp collecting, bird watching etc are also really great hobbies. And sometimes you really do need the right tool for the task.
and yes this whole thing is just me rationalising buying another embroidery frame because the pile I’ve got aren’t quiet right and it’s awkward and not good for my hands so really it’s an investment for my health, both mental and physical.
now if only I could get thimbles that fit properly. I might need to find a blacksmith/fine metal worker…. Maybe a jeweller?

Progress on my little practice blankie:
Tumblr media
Some of the points turned out nice and crispy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sure learned a lot after sewing seven rows of nine triangles together!
And, this being my first real patchwork project, my blanket face ended up... not square.
Tumblr media
But that's ok. It turned out pretty darn good for my very first patchwork (and my very first time sewing 60-degree symmetry)!
Now to sew the other face!

I am so happy 🩷. I grabbed my old ass sewing machine from the basement and set it up all on my own. I can’t wait to quilt with this! Just gonna need to practice first.

A conversation at a wedding, beside the gifts table. There is a large box wrapped in violently purple paper sitting beside the table.
Guest: That's a big box. Wonder what's in it.
Me: A custom handmade quilt on an oak quilt rack.
Guest: Really?
Me: Yup. Wanna see?
Guest: Sure.
Me: *shows pics on my phone*
Guest: Wow. You made that?
Me: Yep. Finished it last night.
Guest: That's amazing. Very purple.
Me: Yeah, (bride) asked for that.
Guest: Oh, she knows about it?
Me: I worked with her on the design. But she hasn't seen the finished quilt yet. It's a surprise.
Guest: So you take commissions? Could you make one in, say, two weeks?
Me: That depends. Do you have ten thousand dollars?
Guest: What.
Me: Materials, labor, overtime to make that deadline--yeah, it would start at 10K. Might be higher if you wanted expensive materials or some really fancy technique.
Guest: That's a lot of money!
Me: It is.
Guest: Did you charge (bride) that much?
Me: No. Hers is a gift.
Guest: A ten thousand dollar gift?
Me: Well, to the extent that I am part of a quilting tradition at all, the tradition I'm part of is that quilts can ONLY be given as gifts. Anyone who could casually afford to pay for the amount of work involved in a quilt is probably not someone to be trusted with art.
Guest: Art?
Me: ART.
Guest: ...
Me: I also made her a nice satin dressing gown, which she wore for hair and makeup earlier.
Guest: Is that art, too?
Me: I mean, it's got pockets.

Teeny tiny pineapple block quilts by artist Amy Pabst
Here's some with my hand to give you an idea of scale on each block:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did get to chat a little with Amy while she was in her gallery zone. She said she works often with silks, including reclaimed ones, and she finger presses her work rather than using an iron. The pastel rainbow piece above is called Soft Pride, measures 41cm x 41cm, has 11,925 pieces, and took her about 4 weeks to make. She does not use a magnifying glass while she works, relying purely on her eyesight, but she does make sure to take regular eye rest breaks every 10-20 minutes.
