One should always have at least 2 craft projects going. That way, when one of them is messed up and misbehaving, you can switch to another, and let the first one sit there and think about what it's done.

Awww, I鈥檓 so happy whenever anyone is interested in hand piecing and hand quilting! Even though I do not partake, my mom and sister are quilters and one grandma was, and I was in a youth quilt guild growing up. I sleep under several hand-quilted quilts. My mom teaches hand quilting classes, and I am a booster of this old-fangled method! (Also, a person who doesn鈥檛 make quilts but is able to quilt often ends up putting a few stitches in a quilt here and there. Does that make me a social quilter?)
Anyway one piece of practical advice if you want it: hand-piecing should be no problem if you鈥檙e used to hand-sewing, but if you actually want to hand-quilt at home, there are equipment questions. For a small solo hobby, you don鈥檛 want a vast quilting-bee-style standing frame, so you鈥檙e looking for lap frames.
There are some very simple ones that take up little storage space, but I want to put a word in for any kind that holds your work up off your lap. I have one borrowed from my mom for a small project. This one was by Better Built for Jean Brown, and doesn鈥檛 seem to be sold anymore:

But very similar lap hoop frames are available: I think Barnett鈥檚 is the leading company in the USA, and they have many variations!
A quilt top sandwiched together with a batt and back blocks your view of what鈥檚 going on the back of it really effectively, and it can be very heavy! Having a hoop with lift saves you holding it up and provides space to negotiate the turnaround of your needle and thread, avoid poking your pants, etc. Allows you to concentrate on your stitches.
My sister says hand-quilting is almost a meditative practice for her. She prefers a tilted hoop. She has some older version of the Grace lap-hoop, I think.
All of these are a little spendy (over $100 US) but my sister got hers on Craigslist and they are often available on that kind of local buy/swap service.
My unsolicited advice for anyone getting into hand-quilting: get a frame that holds the weight up, whether a standing frame or a lap frame!
I woke up with the urge to quilt something a week ago. I have never quilted anything and don't know the first thing about it, so I have tried to ignore it.
The urge hasn't left me, and has only gotten worse.
It would be hand quilting since I don't get along with machines and don't enjoy, at all, using them. I do enjoy hand stitching, and would like to experience that link to the past. I would like to make a blanket, just once.
I don't need another intermittent hobby to take up space in my studio. But this would be so cute in pastel brights.

My second ever quilt is complete and finally on my bed. Took 138 days. All done by hand. I'm really happy with it and so glad I got to show it to my grandmother for Christmas (as she's the one who inspired me to get into quilts). Some of the embroidery on the back doesn't show up great in the photo but I'm really proud of that too.

I finished this quilt last night. This is the quilt I started in 2019 when I wanted to learn how to quilt. I did in fact learn a heck of a lot making this, and along the road. I'd make a lot of choices differently if I did it again but I'm very glad to have this is the "done" category of projects.
Twin size, machine pieced, and hand quilted.

I have finished this baby quilt for my teammate at work, or I suppose more accurately it is for her baby.
My rule when picking fabric from my stash was that it had to have a floral element to be included. I like that despite being very floral it didn鈥檛 turn out to be girly like you might expect.
And I literally spent zero dollars on it. I even pieced together batting scraps and used some binding I had leftover from a different project.

The New England Quilt Museum in Lowell MA is an underrated gem. These are all quilts from their permanent collection and the quality of the hand quilting made me intensely aware of how far I have to go. My favorite is the Orange Peel quilting on the pineapple appliqu茅 quilt. Amazing!!

2.5 months of work, all done my hand. I'm so proud of myself. Keeping the traditions of my grandmother alive and inspired by the quilt she made me when I was 11, it folds up into a pillow.
