i already know what the story behind the picture is but please explain it anyway we need to educate the masses

oh my god thank you for enabling me ive been thinking about this all day. regarding this post i made yesterday and this classic image (which i actually just found out was posted seven years ago today!)

basically as can be read in the post at BigFest in 2016 somebody had what i believe was a fan-made prop based on the laptop from season 2 of gravity falls. alex hirsch attended this convention and decided to type in the password to the laptop. we never learned the password in the show so lots of people were excited to find out!

a HUGE thing to note here is that journal 3 was still months away from releasing and in fact while a couple pages had been released as promotional material it was still being worked on until, like... gosh i wanna say may is when they finally started printing it? don't quote me on that though my point is that this was all taking place pre-journal 3 and, therefore, many fans were still operating under the (sensible) impression that the laptop which

had been designed by fiddleford

had been built by fiddleford

had fiddleford's name on it

said "PROPERTY OF F" on it (at this point it had been established through promo images that "F" referred to fiddleford)

was assumed to be fiddleford's by, like, four different main characters

was given to and used by fiddleford following s2e7

fiddleford presumably knew the password to

would also belong to fiddleford. right? i mean logically. logically, guys.

so when alex hirsch revealed that the password had been "STANFORD" all along, people thought that was a little bit... well

of course, a couple months later journal 3 would be published and it would say that the laptop had actually been STANFORD'S, not fiddleford's, and that he had made the password his own name. so technically i lied in my earlier post, there IS a heterosexual explanation for this, but imo it's still bullshit. like sorry i don't believe for a fucking second that stanford "i need to encode all of my messages in multiple ciphers and write in invisible ink" pines would ever make a password as simple as his own name. he wouldve picked like something with six different layers of alternate meanings and also put it through atbash at the VERY least. also as i listed above there is a LOT of evidence which would support the laptop belonging to fiddleford, as opposed to ford, which has this random retcon (and like... some of the computer keys are different colors? i guess?? idk that bit was stupid) as its only supporting evidence.

my theory is that, while writing the show, alex and the other writers had intended for the laptop to belong to fiddleford, but for whatever reason, when they were writing the book, they decided to make it ford's instead. i want to make clear that i DON'T think this swap was motivated by homophobia, or as a reaction to seeing people interpret the password in a gay way. by the time that this photo was taken several promotional journal pages had been released, so it's safe to say that even if they were still adding the finishing touches to the book, it was pretty much in its final stage and in fact might have already started printing (i think the first photos we see of the book itself were posted like a week or two after bigfest). so to assume that there's a correlation there is both unfounded and extremely unlikely.

The Lion King wasn’t a ripoff of Kimba.

“There's a common claim that The Lion King (1994) started life as a Kimba the White Lion remake, but they were declined the rights and instead opted to "rip off" the series. There's no proof of such an agreement ever being attempted. Concept art of a white cub exists, but it is from the King of the Jungle stage of development where none of the other Kimba similarities existed. It doesn't help that Matthew Broderick agreed to be in the movie expressly because he thought it was a Kimba adaptation (which is frequently misinterpreted as him being told it was a Kimba adaptation, rather than a misunderstanding on his part).

The supposed similarities between Lion King and Kimba are themselves an example of this. Anybody who's ever watched both can tell you that the similarities are surface-level and superficial at best. While it's possible that some people who worked on Lion King were consciously or unconsciously influenced by Kimba, the idea of there being enough similarities to call the former a ripoff of the latter stems from ignorance and flawed, biased sources.

Additionally the urban legend didn't actually start in Japan, contrary to what even some published authors have claimed, but in the United States. The sound of something being slammed on a table echoes through the room, followed by total silence as those in attendance at the Piltover gathering are apparently all stunned by it.  

Ridiculous, as far as Silco’s concerned. If he were in the Last Drop it would hardly have even been heard over the revelry of the patrons. Not even worth thinking about without anything else to indicate they might have a fight to breakup before it ends with broken furniture.  

In Piltover its worth cutting through the crowd to see which of the so-called ruiling elite has gotten drunk on fizzy wine and made a fool of themselves. It’s not useful in that there is nothing to be gained from the information, but it is a good memory to have when they are trying to block his proposals for them to do something to rectify the harm they are doing to Zaun.  

It is not Hoskal like Silco had half expected but Talis that is the source of the noise.  

And Viktor’s partner does not look at all that inebriated. The hand resting on the hors d'eurves table next to him seemingly not the result of him trying to catch himself after a drunken stumble that is normally the cause in Piltover for such noises but instead what Silco would expect to find back home – a sign of anger and a show of aggression.  

“Say it again,” Jayce says to the man standing in front of him. An investor who clearly thought highly of himself despite coming from one of the lower-Piltover houses going by how he had stuck up his nose to Silco when Piltover’s ridiculous social rules had demanded they must be introduced.  

Viktor’s pet Piltite wasn’t too prone to fits of ego. It would be interesting to know what the investor had said that had the boy actually acting like the alpha he apparently was.  

“You’re not seriously going to make a big deal over it?” the investor asks with an awkward laugh because he also must be feeling painfully aware that he is smaller than Talis, who, almost uniquely among Piltites, possesses the body of someone who has had to actually work to make a living.  

“Say it again,” Jayce repeats. His hand on the table clenching.  

Silco spots Councilor Medarda hurrying over from where she had been, coming to intervene before Talis’ behavior tarnishes her reputation by association. Councellor Kiramman also making her way through the watching crowd, waving the Enforcer guards that apparently must be at all Piltite social events over as she does.  

The investor gives another little laugh, looking Talis up and down as if he is an idiot. He glances around at the crowd as he stands tall again. Full of cocky Piltite arrogance.  

“I don’t know what that Undercity runt gives you but it cannot be worth letting him use your work to prop up whatever criminal dealings he’s involved in.”  

Viktor.  

The ungrateful spoilt piece of shit that had clearly never known a single hardship in his life had insulted Silco’s son.  

“You take that back,” Talis snarls, his hand clenched on the table now in movement.  

“Jayce!” Councilor Medarda manages to intercept before it can connect and rightfully knock the Piltite trash to the ground. Her hand gripping hold of Talis’ arm keeping it by his side. And the brief rage that had seemed to fill Talis returns to the usual Piltite authority.

Talis breaks from Councilor Medarda’s grip and faces off the undeserving shit of a man, giving Silco some hope he will still hit him for his insults against Viktor. Actually use the alpha strength he had been given for something other than peacocking for Silco’s child.  

“My partner,” Talis starts with a weight on the word that gives no question who he is talking about or the importance of their relationship, “is the reason Hextech exists. And Hextech is the reason we are here tonight. You do not deserve to be here if you would talk about him like that.”  

“I-”  

Go on, say something that’ll push it. Let’s see if Talis has the balls to actually punch.  

“No. Get out,” Talis cuts off, looking at the Enforcers expectantly like they actually give a shit about someone discriminating against a Zaunite. “And you can forget about any deal. Or your family ever being involved with Hextech in the future.”  

The message is clear and yet the piece of shit still goes to open his mouth to argue.  

“You should leave,” Councilor Medarda tells him with a pointed nod to the Enforcers.  

Silco is sure they don’t actually think he’s done anything wrong. But an instruction from a councilor has them ushering him out without any of the force Silco has personally experience from them.  

“Well then,” Councilor Kiramman says with a forced, polite smile to those gathered watching the show. “Now that has been dealt with shall we return to what we were doing?”  

The sound of Piltite social gathering starts up again forced as it is and Talis seems to deflate. Glancing around as the two Councilors mutter at him. Silco can’t hear what they’re saying from his distance but he is sure it is chastisement for Talis defending his partner.  

Silco raises his brow when Talis’ gaze finds his and it has the boy breaking from his two handlers to practically shuffle over. Head hung low like his is a chastised pup and not Piltover’s Golden Boy, who can demand a person removed despite the others in attendance not thinking they did anything wrong.  

“I know Viktor can handle himself and doesn’t need protecting,” Talis says, his head low in submission and voice quiet. “And I know it’s nothing new. But I-”  

“You don’t need to apologize to me boy,” Silco tells him before Talis ruins the respect he earned from his display.  

“I- yes, of course. I know,” Talis mutters. Not that Silco thinks he does at all.

Finished 2.1, was a fun ride, I think I have a few thoughts in mind but rn the most prevalent one is: Damn, I did NOT expect argus and tuesday to be more toxic than valenweis. So have a compilation of my reactions I guess.

Sheesh girlie is actually just taunting her to the extreme and I didn't even include her whole jab at her candy reliance. This is legit the perfect pair for the hatesex trope.

Like for a moment, I even thought tuesday was implying she banged and stole kayla here lmao

I know this is just an illusion by the motel but it'd be so fucked up if their relationship was actually this toxic, like the motel digs up stuff from their memories so this insecurity or perception of kayla had to come somewhere from deep inside argus' mind.

What's worse is, she could be right, considering kayla is a top tier of manus fucking vindictae 😭. Poor girl has insecurities of being wielded like a mindless tool, tries to assure herself that the woman shes pining and looking for is not that, only for said woman to be avoiding her because shes already served her purpose for her (I think, we'll see in argus' story I guess).

Though it could be a more mutual angsty case if we interpret kayla's smile as a sign she considers argus as more than that, maybe a pet instead :P (have high doubts she actually reciprocates her feelings the same way).

Poor argus cannot escape scummy women, hope she'll find happiness in vertin's suitcase because let's be fr she's joining us.

Also I absolutely love this particular quote because it's not just a jab at argus' trust issues but also an indirect one at her insecurity in her own image, her fear of hesitating, failing and being seen as incompetent (I think she has them? otherwise i don't really know what the townspeople in her hallucination are meant to signify).

Ok one last thought: I think argus' best shot for a happy yuri out of the entire 2.1 cast is legit with Ms. Karen Kimberly over here.

Because as hostile as their interactions are, their dynamic was pretty funny and nice compared to tuesday's harassment.

They radiate big bully x dumb bimbo energy, a pretty classic and tame rivalry dynamic. Kimberly's also the one with the least malicious/mean intentions towards argus, she doesn't want to harm or even use her, she just wants to eat!

So long as they take the time to talk it out and not point lethal weapons at each other, I'm sure they could get along in some way (looking at you argus, put that gun down and listen to your heart more, you big softie).

to the ghost of henry peglar, congrats on writing your poem down 177 years ago!!!

to the actual academic scholars who have studied the pages before me....

so I took the royal museum greenwich's scan of the poem page (which is available online hereeee) and screwed around with its light levels in photoshop until henry's script was darkened enough to see more clearly. then I digitally traced over the darkened letters as best as I could, while also trying to discern his handwriting, and type up how I was reading it & this process took me about a week to get done between like... living my regular day to day life lmao.......

so when it WAS done, the final isabel acheronist peglar papers ["the open C"] transcript seemed a bit different than how I remembered the readily available russell potter transcript going ? (the poem is on the last two pages of that pdf for those of you who don't spend a billion hours a week looking at it btw)

it felt like I was getting more/different information out of it, compared to the potter transcript, which was kind of stressing me out honestly. so THEN I compared mine with barry cornwall's original poem and found more words that matched up? particularly in the second and third stanzas?

so!!!!! almost two hundred years later here's what I've landed on:

so then after going thru All Of That, I wanted to have a version of the original poem with parts that Henry did remember clearly highlighted for comparison purposes:

I know it's a popular theory that Henry was writing a dirty parody of the original poem? which if true, is funny as hell. me when i have to write cheeky victorian porn before i die.

But (serious voice) something about that hadn't ever seemed exactly right to me... IN MY HEART it seems more realistic that around 1847 he (and also by extension, the whole surviving expedition crew) were starting to experience confusion / brain fog symptoms from being ummmm quite physically unwell. the lead poisoning/scurvy combo would have severe effects on the brain's ability to function properly, and I started to wonder if Henry was trying to test his memory somehow? So he picked a widely known and popular Victorian era poem about being a sailor to see how much he could recall??? and he then got a little whimsical with it, and wrote in his own words to fill in the portions he couldn't fully recall, because it's his own diary and likely didn't expect anyone else to ever read it, much less have it turn into ONE of TWO surviving sources about the expedition?????

like... idk... this is probably the work of someone in the exact moment as they were starting to realize how bad things were, and then was trying to cope by using poetry. and That hurts my feelings enough as it is, but going through it was also just a very weird and haunting experience....... like, I can recognize all these tiny details in this dead guy's script and handwriting now. and to read his own account of his life in his own words, what stood out to him and what he recalled, what he wanted people in the future to know about him? insane. it literally felt like i was getting haunted by him for no reason. on top of knowing that Someone (#teamarmitage) loved this guy enough to keep his memory protected and safe, even though They Were So Totally Fucked And Going To Die There, unknowing if they'd ever be found again........

Way back before we got the BatDR trailer I had this wild theory -- basically, that the reason they couldn't show any concept art/trailers/etc was that BatDR was gonna pull a wizard of oz and suddenly be in colour partway through. So then that's why we were getting teasers like "look, its a model of A SHELF," because all the actual interesting stuff would've obviously been in colour and spoiled the surprise.

Part of the reason I thought this would work really well was that I assumed Nathan's acquisition of the Bendy IP and "revival" of the franchise in-world would be thematically relevant, rather than just... an excuse to have a second game. Like, Bendy is in new hands now, the cartoons are essentially being rebooted, and there's a LOT of thematic potential in that concept of Old vs New or the good and bad aspects of Change, and the idea that reviving Bendy in the real world would impact the ink realm was a fascinating concept to me. Now that we know the main thrust of the story........... actually I still think this could've worked with it? The sepia-toned Memory of Joey's Regret and the evil of the Ink Demon lingers over the studio and corrupts this new colourful world, while Wilson, the Man Who Killed The Ink Demon, is the one trying to forcibly extinguish these old stains and make the machine useful again.

Geez, you could tie Wilson's motivation in pretty directly actually if you dropped the ENTIRE thing where he says he's trying to BETTER THE WORLD THRU THE POWER OF THE MACHINE or whatever and instead just make him an actual janitor whose dad just gave him this bottom-tier job at his company. Give Nathan one audiolog about how his son is neglectful at work and its hard to find a job he can actually do or some such, and then you have Wilson as someone desperate to prove he deserves more. He sees his father's idolisation of Joey is naive, is able to realise the memory of Joey may be literally corrupting the business through the machine, and wants to eradicate that -- including Audrey, the most subtle infiltration of Joey Drew's influence. He's essentially the force of the New applied with no respect for the Old -- and then you could still give Wilson ties to that psychedelic neon ink from the Shipahoy battle; in fact, you could probably lean into it more: colour taken to the extreme, colour taken too far, something just as destructive as Joey's monochrome obsession.

(I've always loved the idea that Wilson isn't actually an artist and just stole the Shipahoy design while janitoring, which works great with the Shipahoy Monstrosity at the end being part crab because he couldn't actually create an isolated model to feed the machine... in this current era of The Threat Of AI Generation, the idea of wilson introducing a lot of mechanical innovation and incompetently dumping artwork into the machine to make new, too-colourful horrors in the interest of impressing his father while destroying all the old things these cartoons were first built on feels apropos lmao. obviously AI wasn't a huge talking point while BatDR was in production, but "ppl who assume more technology automatically makes art better while inadvertently destroying its heart" is extremely not new)

So the ink realm could be partially in colour (a world changed by the new cartoons), partially sepia (the infected memories of the old studio), and partially glowy neon (wilson's overzealous renovation). It'd be neat if Audrey became a bit of both -- partially colour, partially sepia -- and represented the new cartoons' ties to the old. Learning about the horrors that befell her father's old studio and the Gent technology that Wilson is now using are both relevant -- Joey's exploitation of actual artists who care was bad, and so is Wilson's complete disregard for the heart of these artists' work. The memory of Joey can't fix it because he is part of the problem -- he and the demon are the source of the monochrome infection -- so you have to be the one to bring heartfelt colour into this world, a power none of the others have; find a way to heal those trapped by old wrongs and restart the cycle in a better direction. Then, when Audrey says she wants to create a kinder cycle at the end, we have an idea of what that means and that she can do it b/c there's simple symbolism associated with it -- the new, colourful world that's neither corrupted by festering wrongs nor torn apart by Wilson's machines.

anyway. thats my half-baked idea. i still think its a shame that there WAS colour in there for like 2 seconds and they did NOTHING WITH IT!!!!

Or, really, where is the line for you to interpret when L Actually Cares For Someone vs He Definitely Doesn't, and the difference of how he acts on it, especially where it overlaps with people's social expectations of him? my view is that L always cares about people and about preserving human life, but he ironically cares about it in the same way that light does: in the abstract, as an overarching value, but never as a first priority. L wants to save lives because it is the right thing to do. i acknowledge that secondarily, allowing people to die, in the game he's playing with Kira, counts as a "loss" to him. that's definitely a factor. however i do genuinely believe the preservation of life is important to L for its own sake. it's just that it's not the be all and end all. it's a value he holds, but it's one he can compromise.

how do i put this. it's the trolley problem, right? L is playing the trolley problem. (so is light.) the key thing is that the scale has been blown up. it's not "allow one person to be hit by a trolley so five people aren't". it's "someone is out there killing a hundred people every five minutes, and if you hit this one person with a trolley, it gets you five minutes closer to finding the killer, so that's a hundred people who don't have to die." it's very utilitarian. it makes sense. but say your number one value as a person is to prevent deaths. any number of deaths is unacceptable. intolerable. the trolley problem would pose a completely unwinnable situation for you, because you wouldn't be able to conceive of killing one to save five as a more moral or acceptable choice. both outcomes would be unacceptable. in a more abstract scenario such as the one above, even more unacceptable. but not to L. (and not to kira.) this is basically exactly the conversation that happens during the yotsuba investigation. soichiro and memory-loss light want to arrest the yotsuba group immediately, because they're about to kill a number of people, and light and soichiro want to save those people. L wants to wait, because they might save those people, but they won't catch kira. as long as kira is at large, more people will die. so the number of lives saved increases, in the abstract, if they allow this small number of people to be killed. you see how in a twisted way this all comes back to the same core value of "wanting to save lives"? it basically turns on WHY you want to save lives. soichiro wants to save lives because life is sacred, but for L, it's a numbers game. it's about quantity. it's utilitarian.

in terms of the ukita question specifically, i think the answer is just that L is human just like anyone else. he doesn't want his associates to die. i think he cares about the task force, not fiercely or devotedly, but he does care. if the question is "when does L actually care for someone vs when does he not" i would say that if he cares for someone he always cares for them, but i would probably ask a different question, being "what does caring about someone look like for L?" and my answer to that would be that he wants them to live, he will take drastic measures to ensure they live (eg matsuda), but it's not the case that he would do absolutely anything to ensure that happens. if the choice was between their life and the whole world, he'd let them die if he had to. it would upset him, but he would. the thing with the ukita situation is that L prevents aizawa from going to the scene specifically because he knows that being at the scene will not do anything to further the cause or save any lives. if aizawa goes, he will die as needlessly as ukita does, so the obvious answer is not to let him go because there's no benefit. would the answer change if sending aizawa might save ukita? probably. would it change if it MIGHT save ukita but it MIGHT also be that they both die? less clear. could honestly go either way.

the aizawa quitting scene is a funnier one. one of the things that makes L such an interesting and unique character is that he lies directly to the narrative and to the reader repeatedly on so many occasions that often the actual truth just never comes out. normally liar characters will get some kind of debrief here and there where their lying comes up again, but L just lies a lot and then the story moves on. so it honestly is hard to know exactly what he meant by that scene. many different interpretations could be true. it could have been a test, as the text says it was. but i also like your interpretation (that it was an attempt to get aizawa to quit for the sake of his family), it's very plausible in my view! i also think he wasn't lying about liking aizawa, but i also think he never would have said it out loud if he hadn't been trying to get the last word haha.

finally, i think L just has a really strong ability to distance himself from his own feelings. not to deny them or repress them, but to compartmentalise really effectively and consider and evaluate them with as much weight as he needs to compared to other factors at place, like, he's very self-aware. he's aware that his behaviours are childish and competitive at times. he even states flatly that in a situation where his life is at risk, he will lose some of his objectivity. that was a great one for me, because i think it's the most rational approach to acknowledging emotions. fake intellectuals who campaign for "ohhhh logic only no emotions!!!!!!" are idiots - you'll never do away with your emotions, they will always affect you, and so the logical thing to do is actually to just acknowledge them and factor them in, including the somewhat paradoxical fact that at times you won't be able to factor them in. that's what L's doing. L never denies that he has emotions and he doesn't try to hide them beyond protecting himself. he knows that he's afraid to die and that it might affect his judgement, so he distances himself enough to acknowledge that fact, factors it in as best he can, accepts it, and moves on. so when i say he's distant from his emotions, i don't mean it in a way that suggests L's relationship with his emotions is unhealthy. i actually think it's pretty functional. he's quite in touch with himself. my point is that L could care about someone very much and still prevent his care for that person from changing what he does.

anyway, i think the answer is that L is someone who does care about people, but for whom caring about people is barely a factor in terms of deciding his behaviour. he's not uncaring, he's just ruthless. if it's possible to save everyone, he will. if he's not, he'll save as many as possible even if it means sacrificing a few himself, because it's a numbers game. if he can save the people closest to him, he will. he wants to. but he doesn't have that many people close to him, so it doesn't come up much, anyway.
