today one of my caseload students was meeting with the social worker so i went and took my break in my favorite room (the in-school suspension room, run by one of my favorite colleagues who has a language arts and restorative practices background with 20+ years of experience) and there was a kid who I've NEVER seen in there with an unusual situation, and apparently all day she and this student couldn't figure out the math work she was supposed to do for one of her classes...

So I said okay, let's look up this type of work, I taught myself how to do it, then I tried to figure out a way to show her the steps, and we did this problem together:

and then with each problem I started having her do more and more of the steps, and by the time we got to the 5th one she was going up to the board and doing them herself, and I was getting so excited, and when I sat back down my colleague came up to me jumping up and down and stage whispering "you are a TEACHER!!" and she's one of the first people at the start of my educational career who told me that I had "it" three years ago and it really just made my day today.

I can't even begin to describe the special, unique sense of deep pride I feel when I get to model learning for a student and see it click for us both in real time to the point that they can replicate it without my help. Not knowing the answer isn't shameful, it's a part of the process, and I just love it more than anything else. 😭😭

#math used to be such a disorienting and upsetting experience for me #but now its actually fun like a puzzle because i have a reason to try to see it positively so my students can succeed #its such a motivator...

its interesting to me how self-deprecation neatly ties into making others feel bad. like. if you constantly assume that you’re stupid no matter how informed or skilled in a topic you might be, people who are a bit less learned or skilled than you might see how you, someone who is obviously skilled, talk down about yourself, and assume that if you think YOURE an idiot you must think theyre an even bigger idiot and lose confidence or find you intimidating as a result. its fucked up. and its part of why it can be so important to break out of cycles of self-hatred--not just for yourself, but for people around you

#speaking as someone who deals w imposter syndrome and self-hatred constantly. its just an important perspective to have #especially cuz when you deal with self hatred sometimes self improvement sounds less appealing if you only think it helps you #but understanding true self-confidence as something that can also be good for those around you kind of helps motivate me. idk #sorry i need to eat dinner im feeling a lil loopy

Love that Oppenheimer is a deeply disturbing horror movie about a man forced to accept that he is, in a person, the representative manifestation of mankind’s evil in committing one of the greatest horrors of human history - LITERALLY acting as the modern Prometheus, tormented by his sins for the remainder of time. Knowing that he will never be pitied and his actions will forever be utterly unforgivable because the blood of genocide and the potential of total human annihilation will eternally drip from his hands.

But also the simultaneous indictment by the film that to blame a single person for the Manhattan Project is to refuse to accept your own capacity for great evil if the ends ever seem to justify the means, and the culpability of every member of a species that lets itself create something so unspeakably terrible.

Hate that twitter’s take on such a nuanced and brilliantly handled examination of those issues is “movie bad because protagonist not evil enough.”

#what’s that quote about the problem with othering the enemy in media is that we can no longer see our own reflection in their eyes #oppenheimer’s motivations WERE sympathetic that’s the POINT #we SHOULD feel uncomfortable with our sympathy for him - the film goes out of its way to make us feel uncomfortable about it #we should be uncomfortable with the fact that we might have made the same decisions as him in his place #yes he’s evil but his evilness represents the evil that we might all accept in ourselves #twitter simply cannot handle nuanced takes on things ig (tumblr does though - the posts on here have been surprisingly excellent)#oppenheimer #(tldr - look if you walk out of Oppenheimer thinking it somehow celebrates the man then you may need to retake 9th grade Literature srry)#films
