Hey, I get I've been raving about Astarion a lot but, like, are there ACTUALLY people out here who hate Gale and are calling him an incel? Is this a thing? Thank God I apparently curate well bc holy fucking shit I would be having heart palpitations DAILY out of SHEER ANGER.

So, like, we're always going to make fun of our faves and whatnot bc lbr "bro, you were banging Mystra and fucked up that bad?" THOUGH TO BE FAIR, if you're a wizard it isn't that hard to bang Mystra. It's kind of her thing. P sure her banging Elminster as many times as she has is the main reason he's still kicking and out being the Faerûnian Gandalf that he is in-game. Mystra's bodycount aside (especially since that has ZERO bearing on ANYTHING least of all her portfolio and purpose), like, Gale is a very intelligent man. He is also what we would consider as an objectively good person. Save the kids, help the tieflings, be kind and compassionate to those the average "good" aligned folks would consider "worthy" and yeah. He is literally the Alistair Theirin of BG3 if you Fusion Danced him together with Awakening Anders.

That being said, he is also very deeply flawed in that he KNOWS he is brilliant and in that brilliance, knowing his own talent, he thinks he knows better than even his own goddess BUT-! But, but, but, he is mortal, is young enough and in an age to not be able to wrack up the accomplishments of, say, Elminster whom he clearly knows on a fairly personal level so, like anyone who knows they are capable of doing great things, he feels INFERIOR bc he hasn't, in his mind, PROVEN that he is as great as he knows he is. And that's the hubris of mortality.

Objectively, LOGICALLY, he knows that he's more than proven himself capable. Mystra wouldn't have started a relationship with him otherwise, and she never asked him to prove himself. It was his own desperation to prove that he was worthy of her and thinking he knew EVERYTHING that lead to his terrible situation. Is he very clinical and logical about it? Yes. Is he squirrelly about it in the beginning? Very much, yes. Hell, I would be. No one wants to be friends with a literal ticking time bomb and the man is VERY lonely. Hell, that's the name of the game baybee! Baldur's Gate 3: These Bitches Need a Hug; YES EVEN LAE'ZEL, I WILL FIGHT Y'ALL!

Back to Gale, your friendship with him is something he very much treasures and when he starts all his finger wiggling and magic talk he's like any nerd sharing the thing he is most passionate about. He is also the first to admit he fucked up. HOWEVER, that does not (imo) warrant him needing to sacrifice himself all for Mystra's forgiveness, and even Elminster isn't on board with that. And, like, when he talks about Mystra it's never in an accusatory manner towards her. He clearly still loves her, likely always will, but that never negates his love for the PC who chooses to romance him. He is also very much prone to falling into the same pitfall of hubris that got him before and very clearly needs guidance that, yes, Mystra clearly did neglect in giving him. But he never outright blames her, at least he's not in my playthroughs thus far even after having spoken with her in the temple. He's just a sad, lonely nerd and that does not automatically make him an incel; y'all just don't know how to read, listen, or understand nuance. Apparently.

tl;dr

Gale deserves as much love as Astarion but bc he isn't evil "babygirl" material that's "fixable" he's just called an incel when he can be a very genuine friend, but what are those nowadays I guess?

General Opinion over said character: I FUCKING LOVE THESE GUYS!!!!! i love it when there is a guy with a big fucking sword who has sooo many problems. lol! anyway ok more specifically:

i thought nmj was very interesting while reading the novel and definitely had a "hey wtf dude" initial reaction to him, but he's reallyyy grown on me <3 partially bc he's been on my mind a lot and partially bc of his presence in cql! (cql nmj is my type also so that definitely did smth to me as well lol) i think he's a really interesting character to explore both bc of his general backstory and bc of his relationships w other characters, as well as the fact that (in the novel) we never really see him of completely sound mind, so there's lots of room to play w how you portray him. he's fun!

lqg i love soooo much i loved him from day ONE i loved him as soon as he showed up. he's so good. i think his appearance was a very funny surprise (?), esp the way sqq narrated it lmao, and i really like him in general. i loveee the loyal sword character trope and i like how lqg does it (so well <3). his general awkwardness and extreme talent to put his foot in his mouth is also really charming ("its ok you can just get a new disciple" what is wrong with him). i also think there's room to explore w him, especially his family + relationships w other sect members, i love you liu siblings... lqg is a character who goes through a lot of growth imo and it's very satisfying to see that + how his rs with sqq changes through the novel. lqg is also a character that is so fun to put into situations and also make fun of. bc he's so sucks <3 ANYWAY I FUCKING LOVE LQG if there is no lqg lovers on this earth i am dead etc

God moding/meta-ing the RP. Don't use any info your character wouldn't have the slightest clue on. Unless it was discussed on how they may have acquired it prior , or planned through other threads. What remains in a thought collective, stays in the mind. Unless your muse holds telepathy in some aspect. Then it's a different story.

Judgement of writing style. My writing is far from perfect, and I often have one hell of a time judging myself. I don't need others on top of that, adding to my horrendous insecurities. I like detailing things, from the environment, to facial expressions, or even course of actions. I sometimes hyper focus on one thing and become brief with another. I don't understand it myself, nor always catch myself doing it. I hold horrible habit of having issue with repeating a certain word when writing my own posts, and I do sometimes get carried away over different synonyms to these said words. To the point that not every definition becomes so literal. How, or when I developed this habit, I do not know. It's a tick that only happens on my own writing, never on any of my partners. I judge myself too harshly in everything, not just writing. However, if I flood you with a lot of paragraphs -- that usually just means you struck my muse in a massive way and I wish to shower you with love. That I want to engage with you at what my brain considers my best. No body ever has to match whatever length I spew out. Please remember that. Also note, that even if my muse is struck so highly for your muse. My brain can still muck it up. It's a fickle beast. But that is adhd in a nutshell.

Judgement over ships/shipping. ... This one, the more I think on it, is a big one. I have been judged on ships in the past. On several accounts, actually.. some more recent. That it has gotten me reluctant to approach anyone to ask " hey lets try to smoosh these two together ! ?" Judging someone's ship is a disgusting form of shaming someone because they didn't conform to your ideals of said characters. Judgement with narcissistic attempts to push stuff a certain way -- yeah, no. Don't do it. Also, don't try to force ships . I support McReid, but if a Reid does not ? You back the fuck off the suggestion. It's really that simple. Respect. Your. Partners. Not everything revolves around romance anyways. Plenty of other relationships they can aim for. Friendships are a beautiful thing too. I mean -- platonic is also a thing as well, you know. It can bloom just as heavenly.

The Shisui/? has me going nuts! I would've leaned towards Shisui/Tenzo in the first installment of Hope AU, but Kisame and Shisui are just So Damn Compelling!

Well, what is all? All the, like, popular ones? Because there are a loooottttt of rarepairs or possible ships.I've done this in my head but I don't think I've ever done it in public. It's complicated, because I like different things about them. I'm limiting this to like, ships involving main characters (plus Sidney) that I see mentioned just to keep it manageable. If you want to know about any I didn't mention please just send a follow up ask!!

Best to worst:

Houlihawk (Hawkeye/Margaret) and hawnk (Hawkeye/Frank) Houlihawk because they just have so much chemistry it makes me insane and there's just some wonderful "opposites attract but they're more likely than they think" romance, narrative foils make a powerful couple Hawnk because it is very funny

Piercentyre (Hawkeye/Trapper) Best-friends-to-lovers is so cute! I'm already obsessed with their friendship so sure. The chemistry is fun. They're obnoxious (affectionate). The show jokes about them being a couple or situates them as the other couple to Frank/Margaret a lot.

Hawkeye/Charles There's not a lot to this except for whatever the fuck Alan Alda and David Ogden Stiers were doing whenever they had a scene together. I think they're both just such great actors (and Alan Alda's approach to acting heavily involves relating to a scene partner) that it creates chemistry. I don't know!!

Henry/anyone from the main cast I have no real opinion but Henry is the epitome of This Dude Fucks and McLean is sexy so why not. I don't seek this out. Someone wrote Henry/Hawkeye/Trapper porn based on my post one time so I have to have a little affection.

Trapper/Margaret I don't get it at all, even when the show teases it I just get no spark, but it would be hot.

Hawkcahy (Hawkeye/Mulcahy) I don't get it and I'm not into shipping the priest with anyone but I mostly just don't react when I see it.

Klinger/anyone from the main cast I just don't see it!

Charles/Klinger Don't get it!! None of their interactions seem this way to me.

Radar/anyone from the main cast A little squicky for me because of how Radar is written especially in his later seasons. I also just don't really get it.

Hawkeye/Sidney There are already enough ethical problems in this relationship. Also they have no sexual chemistry and Sidney could like men but I have no reason to think he does (and headcanon him as straight and happily married).

BJ/Hawkeye (aka hunnihawk or beejhawk) Whatever the opposite of romantic chemistry is, that's what they have to me. I'm not shocked slash of them exists because I know how slash fandom works, but I was still surprised at how big this ship was and like... the specific way it was popular when I got into the fandom. I do not see them as a couple under any circumstances. Specifically I cannot see Hawkeye having feelings for BJ, that's an immediate "he would not fucking say that" for me. Truly cannot emphasize enough this is a bottom-tier ship for me. I think across all the fandoms I've been in, I've only found one ship that's more NOTP to me than this one. If it weren't so popular with the fandom it'd be more "I don't think about you at all." Also like, if I could believe them as a couple, I don't think they'd be a good one based on their dynamic in the show.

What are your thoughts on Willow x Hunter?

I… don't care? They're fine. Cute enough, they have something to bond over, both good to each other and exceptionally boring as a couple. They're almost the same person even except one likes lifting weights and plants while the other likes sci-fi and actually matters to the story.

I do not get the hype I guess is what I'm saying. Not that I'm entirely surprised either. It was finally a ship for Willow that wouldn't get you accused of enabling abuse or evil like Boschlow would (seriously people, what the fuck? I don't like the ship but you all need to learn to breathe.) or just all alone like Willuz or Amillow would. For Hunter it was an even bigger reprieve. The show finally told you "Ship them" with a scene without it either breaking up Lumity or being with the CANONICAL LESBIAN.

Seriously, I will not drop that they tie his character arc, effectively starting it three times over, with three different girls and that would be bad without one of them being AMITY. Because each one really does get that "This could be the start of a friendship or a romance" moment with Hunter and that makes me roll my eyes some.

So yeah, they're the safe option. They're the show approved option with no conflict between them, little contrast and it does a good job of entirely making you forget that while Willow questionably worked out before the show (we actually have nothing to go off of one way or another), Hunter almost certainly did. Because child soldier.

Going into that goes into everything that's a mess about Willow though and how much the writers just do not care about her.

So instead, I actually want to talk about two of the complaints about Huntlow that I just think are… The complaint has a purpose but its target is wrong.

"Huntlow stole time from the show."

I actually severely disagree with this. After all, Hunter was always going to get time and his arc is already rushed, to the point where it doesn't really have a middle. It just starts a few times like mentioned above, then Hollow Mind forces a climax on it and we get a little bit of resolution. That was always going to happen because it was a well established as part of the story.

The only question was with who and… Well, Willow was the choice the writers made and they made it for the sake of Huntlow over narrative. And that's the problem. Your complaint is that Hunter's arc is not good and the unfortunate consequence is that giving the arc more focus would have meant Willow just… Not being in S2. Not in a meaningful way because Willow always has to have an excuse from another character to exist.

And the time Huntlow did take? Effectively none. Because they allow Hunter to just consume Gus' role as closest person to Willow, all the Huntlow moments actually get to flow naturally because they have one personal, one on one conversation and then just know EVERYTHING about each other so the rest of it is just glances, blushes, etc. that take no time and you can just move on from.

It's really fucking bad writing but hey! Part for the course.

"It's ableist."

I think the argument for it, what little I've seen, is… dumb. And puts way more importance and impact on the two's magical handicaps WAY more than the show literally ever did. And again, the complaint is kind of missing the real problem.

Eda's curse was an AMAZING disability allegory. Unlike so many shows where the dude in a wheelchair is actually in a SUPER WHEELCHAIR SO HE CAN KICK BUTT LIKE ANYONE EL-

No. Eda was genuinely held back by the curse. She didn't let it hold her back though. She instead took her medicine, watched out for the things that may trigger her and the curse, etc. like that. It wasn't a super power but it also didn't stop her from being an exceptional person. From living the life she wanted. As someone struggling with disability myself due to anxiety and depression… That's what I want.

I don't want characters being super powered from it is not. Or being cured. And Eda gets a super saiyan form, Gus takes out a fucking coven head and Flapjack DIES and their sacrifice gives Hunter magic. The cure to his disability (and I know this was not the intention since Hunter was dying from other things but it still matters) is another person's LIFE.

When I can say for myself that my number one goal in life is not to be a burden for others due to my jacked up brain.

So… I would say people are right to say this gets borderline offensive to disabled people but it's REALLY not Huntlow's problem.

Huntlow's problems really are about the show's problems. The problems inherent to these two characters. But, as I've shown in this blog even, for being able to say SO MUCH about the two characters… There's really not a lot to say about the ship. It's there, it's cute, they don't do anything that would make people hate it outside of… I dunno, being straight? At least there is a positive straight couple in the show that isn't dead.

It's a mess but only because the show is a mess. But it's hardly one worth actually throwing a fit over.

anyways um 8 is "common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about" and 10 is "worst part of fanon" pretty similar really going for the haterisms here okok. hmmm i honestly don't even interact with the orv fandom that much like most of the orv posts that aren't just art that i see are mine and my few orvie mutuals' which i usually respect i don't see a lot of posts from outside of this orv echo chamber i've created for myself which i'm ok with tbh. but something i see a lot that i don't like is the depiction of kdj as a scammer type like the breed same as cale tcf and others? i haven't read regression instruction manual but like he's a common comparison and such. and it's true that they're all from the similar mold of like "isekai/fantasay coming to real life but i have an upper hand because i read the book it came from nyeheh" and in that specific aspect yeah kdj has his moments where he takes advantage of his knowledge but it seems like some people attribute him being a liar an unreliable narrator etc to that part of the story also and i don't totally agree with that. he's not an unreliable narrator because he's trying to be sneaky and smart the dude is depressed. he's been so depressed since he was like 13 and he's a grown ass man now it's totally changed his outlook and makes him unable to see the world and his interactions with others properly for what it is. he didn't lie to our faces about smiling when he was actually crying because he was trying to be smart and sneaky it was cause he's sad as fuck and can't even recognize it because he's lowkey wanted to kill himself since middle school. i do agree that cale is similar in that he downplays how insane he is almost dying all the time and getting hurt forever but not caring and driving all his friends up the wall with it without even realizing and like he's also depressed as fuck but when people group them together for being self sacrificing bastard scammers or whatever i just feel like it's different a lot of the time. we aren't seeing the same thing there.

Well I just finished the romantic killer anime and as promised here are some thoughts:

1) The over dramatic screaming got annoying as it does in any anime but Anzu’s facial expressions are unparalleled 2) I don’t like the sparkly filter slapped on the guys in the early episodes, that wasn’t in the manga 3) I really hope romantic scenarios being crushed by the power of friendship become a new trend 4) Hijiri should’ve moved in too, that would’ve made everything way more chaotic if he was always commenting on how the commoners live 5) if anyone can complete this series without thinking Anzu isn’t at least somewhere on the aspec really need to get their eyes checked 6) even though I knew it was coming the dark turn toward the end still hit weird with such a change of tone and 7) /hj as an aroace who has been a lifelong chocolate addict and only loves her cat I’m so happy to finally have representation 🥹 overall a pretty fun watch, there needs to be more fiction mocking amatonormativity & I stand by my comment of it being viewed as a satire of the aromantic experience

so in the final battle, owen vs vera alone, he cant go on. this was all he wanted, to save her (and everyone else ofc). to make up the debt he's been carrying for so long, watching those around him slowly break from the pressure over l corps story, never trying to help. this is his chance. he can fix everything here. he can save vera here.

and he does try. he wills himself onward - 5 more minutes of holding yourself together. 5 more minutes of watching all of your mistakes fly by you. is this emotion, this sadness from her sincere? or is this just a trap? but hey, what about his own? is this just matrying, just insincere guilt?

were any of these connections, these feelings, repairable in the first place, or have we all been faking it? in the end, thoughts like these, that have piled up for so long, are the hands that drag him into her embrace. vera, the voice of distortion's. maybe saving isn't what we needed. maybe i did want to live in your fantasy. maybe i'd be happy then--

but vera cant do it, either. neither of them can survive this. she can't bear to do this, not after her fantasy has been broken, even so slightly. even through this sole crack, she can see, and she cant go on like that. meanwhile, the other half of her, has finally received what she wanted. acceptance. someone, anyone, to reach their hand our to her, not the other way around, like it always has been.

okay, so lets begin by defining amatonormativity: it is the societal expectation of everyone wanting an exclusive, long term romantic relationship and would be better off with it. some common assumptions made due to this are :

Assuming that everyone wants to get married, and unmarried/unpartnered people are unhappy or lonely

Treating romantic relationships as more important than friendships

The structuring of society around married couples (housing, taxes, etc.)

Now, while this affects many queer identities, i can only provide an aro perspective on it.

Growing up, all around me, from as young as kindergarten, romantic relationships were prioritised. even 3 year olds who didn't even grasp the concept of romance were like, oh they're dating now, oh they're married now, etc. throughout my life, the expectation that everyone will eventually pursue a romantic relationship was a constant.

And that fucks you up.

Lets start with the fact that it forced me into thinking it would be my end all goal. i would meet a guy, have a romantic relationship, marry him, have kids, the whole package. And that led to quite a few situations where i forced myself to act like i felt romantic attraction, to convince myself to do things i was not ready for. It led to heartache and probably contributed to my depression. It led to destruction of friendships and led to an unhealthy relationship, which i will say is still affecting me. half a decade later and i still berate myself over those things, it has affected my self perception a lot.

then, when i discovered i was aro,(and its still going on tbh) it made me think i was not normal. it led to the realisation of my othering in a way, for i would never truly know what it is that society prizes and lauds so much. It led to a feeling of isolation and forced me to internalise a lot of shit, and probably bottle up things which i still haven't told anyone about.

then, the linking of my self worth with someone showing romantic interest in me. the feeling that something is wrong with me, physically, mentally, emotionally, just because someone never said hey i like you. the fear thats still within me that i am undesirable and not worthy. that even in movies the "ugly" girl sometimes ends up with a boy so why cant i? it led me to cling unhealthily to anyone who shows/ed me even a modicum of affection, to such an unhealthy degree that it destroyed a friendship, all in the wish that i was worthy of someone's love. all in the feeling that if no one likes me romantically, i do not have worth. i would be just someone people barely tolerate and leave as soon as they can.

also, as a cupioromantic: it fucks me up even more. cause i know wanting a relationship is sort of enforcing amatonormativity but fuck, it would be nice to have. and also, the fear that what will i say to an unsuspecting person, who gets in a relationship with me? with the expectation that it will be romantic? " hey sorry i can never love you romantically but i love you with my whole heart and i hope thats enough?" and then watching them leave cause if there isn't romance whats the damn point?

it hurts every time i think people getting in relationships, expecting me to relate about romantic attraction, them saying "you will also get one don't worry" them being allies but not even knowing aromantic and treating me like i'm a cold hearted monster who could never love truly and its the mourning in the corner of my heart for the fact that i can never experience what people say is a fundamental feeling and in the end,

it fucks you up.

“C’mon,” He says, but quietly, without his usual bravado, “humor me.”

It’s just mild enough to breathe in the shade of the tree canopy. Eddie’s sprawled on his back next to you, hair a matted nest of curls that he keeps pulling away from his face. Your sit on the peer’s edge with your feet dipped into the water - cool lake, cool shade, you might just live to see tomorrow after all - and your mind is clouded in a pleasant, balmy daze. It’s the heat. It’s insufferable, makes everyone delirious.

His hand nudges your elbow, “Ground control to major (Name).” He doesn’t sound all that grounded himself, “This is ground control to major (Name), do you copy?”

You crack a smile, “I thought you don’t listen to that stuff.”

He shrugs, but ceases his pestering, “I heard it on the radio. It’s fine, I guess. A bit whiny.”

“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.”

“Humor me.”

“Thought I was already doing it.”

“You know what I mean. Humor me, c’mon, it’ll be fun.” He sits up slowly, and once he does, his face scrunches as if he had eaten something sour. You have a moment to laugh before he hides his face in his palms, “Jesus fucking Christ I think I just blacked out for a second.”

“It’s official,” You say, grinning from ear to ear, “the heat has melted your brain. It’s gone.”

“Do I qualify as damaged goods now?”

It’s amazing, the way he makes you laugh. It always happens and it’s always expected but you’re caught off guard still. A pleasant silence follows your fit and when the water settles and a breeze wheezes by you start recalling what he had asked. It’s stupid. And probably not a very good idea. Maybe the worst one he has ever had.

But you’re just bored and curious enough to think, hey, what’s the worst that can happen?

He’s looking at you now, and there’s an inquisitiveness to his gaze, a sharpness that you aren’t used to seeing. You shake your head, “I don’t know what I’d say to you.”

It switches in a blink of an eye and you’re seeing Eddie again, the Eddie everyone sees, the strange, theatrical goofball with his dramatic motions, “You don’t know?!” He’s on the verge of tearing his hair out, or perhaps the heatstroke finally caught up with him. He slumps to the side and almost into the water before your hands pull him back to safety, “How can you not know!”

“I just--I dunno! I’m not, like, that good at thinking on the spot.”

He looks into your eyes, and the heat really starts making the world spin, “Just...lie, then. Make something up. I believe in you.”

He always does. He’s the only one.

If the woes of completely 100% platonic friendship were replaced with romance, what would you say to him? That you like it when he smiles? That his eyes are pretty? That he’s good at playing the guitar?

No, it’s not that simple. You do like it when he smiles, but most of all when you look at him and he’s already looking at you and the corner of his lips is quirked upwards and then you know that he will say something that will make you laugh. And when he says it he looks away and glances back to make sure that you’re laughing and looks away again when you do. 

You like it when he looks for you in crowds and looks at you during his concerts or when you’re giving a presentation or when he’s playing the guitar for your ears only in his bedroom. They’re gentle, round, a happy brown color that makes you wonder if anyone else sees him the way you do. There’s a knot in your stomach when you think that they do. Someone has to. He’s just so... so...

“So?” Eddie urges, unnerved by your silence. You continue staring, “Is there something on my face?”

“What? Oh, no, just your face.” 

“Admit it.” He says, “You got lost in my eyes.”

“Yeah,” You say softly, and his suave expression falls, “or at least that’s what I’d say. If we were dating.”

He gulps. Turns away. Watches the water for a solid moment, “Friends can get lost in each others eyes.” He mumbles.

“Oh really?”

“Yeah,” He shrugs, “I get lost in yours all the time.” He backtracks quickly, maybe even panics. It’s hard to tell when he’s being serious. He’s too good at playing pretend, “Not in, like, a weird way or anything. Just like, you know...in a nice friend way.”

But the damage is already done. His words bury deep between the muscles of your heart, lodged there. You’ll have to get used to their intrusion. 

You finally get his insistence to play this game, only for a different reason. 

You’d like to know; would like to dream for a moment. Imagine what it would be like dating your best friend. What he’d say to you.

Had he been wondering the same thing?

...Nah, can’t be. He’s Eddie, and you’re you, and that’s the way it has been since eight grade and it won’t change anytime soon. 

Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to play after all.

“Forget it,” He rubs his face with his hands. Slides closer to the peer’s edge, “it was stupid.” And disappears under the water with a loud splash.

Stupid.

Stupid.

It was stupid. It’s probably the heat, making you feel weird.
