Dazai’s Ability might be named after No Longer Human, but his entire character is based off The Flowers of Buffoonery

It’s in the way the book is a comedy despite being about suicide.

In the way the main character (Yozo Oba) and his friends are constantly joking around despite Yozo being a sanatorium for a failed double suicide with a beautiful woman.

In the way the author is constantly cutting in with funny commentary and lying to the audience at almost every step.

In the way I’m lulled into a false sense of everything being alright, into believing Yozo is actually okay, despite knowing that there’s something wrong.

There’s even a story about crabs.

TFW you’re rotating your blorbos in your mind, putting them in Situations, and then you read someone else’s fic which takes the conceptual axis you were rotating them around and makes it a whole entire world tree. They do it better than you could, their prose is as beautiful, delicate, and delicious as one of those chocolate fans atop a fancy cake, while you are limited to rambling, inappropriate metaphors because you maybe had a tiny microscopic stroke a few years ago and all your sesquipedalian wordsmithery fell out of your perforated brain.

TFW you wonder if it’s even worth trying to write when someone else has already explored the central theme of your work and perfected it. TFW you know the parable of the two cakes but it doesn’t help very much when your metaphorical soufflé refuses to rise.

TFW it’s midnight and you’re feeling hollowed out by just how good the fic you just read was.

Oh, I suppose I should share the fic. It’s a PMMM Rebellion AU in which Kyuubey discovers that it accidentally a sense of self, accidentally transes her gender, and seeks to look upon the face of God before the rest of the Incubator hive mind can kill her. I am as always Deeply Invested in any story in which an alien, otherworldly entity inexpertly mimicking humanity finds itself becoming more human, for what are probably autism reasons. This particular example is very good and I am Not Okay.

can i just say nothing makes me feel emotions like @amethystina ‘s Who Holds the Devil does. every time it updates, without fail, i am collapsing on to the floor and clawing at the walls. even in bleak february, this fic revives my love of writing, fanfic, and gahan, while simultaneously making me feel immeasurable joy when i see the update email even though i am well aware of the grief that i’m about to experience. in the absolute best way possible.
