The epitome of ‘they really need to kiss already’ honestly.

Due to my infatuation with Miguel and Sam, I can’t believe they’d get with anyone else but each other. I am a loyal shipper by nature, just how I am for whatever reason. But I do completely understand where everyone is coming from about these two and why.

There’s nothing wrong with this ship whatsoever, it’s a classic enemies, to friends, to lovers. Or straight enemies to lovers depending on what you like more. Some may call them toxic, and depending on which era you ship them in, it can be. But THIS is the fun kind of toxic that makes ships way more fun to ship! I’m a binary boyfriends shipper, people, I know how it goes, lol. Sam and Tory are just the lesbian version of that so I know exactly why they’re so popular.

Despite what anyone says, they’d function really well together as a couple! Even better than Keenry if you ask me. They have the best parts of both Keenry and Binary Boyfriends; functionally, Sam is the level headed one who bring strong morals and security to the relationship and Tory brings the fire and fury for both of them, though Sam does have that in abundance too. For the foundation, they have TONS of history together, a strong dynamic, an ever growing and changing relationship. These two are just fun to watch interact no matter which way you swing it.

Of course the meat of this relationship comes from the antagonist aspect of their relationship. Enemies to lovers is EXTREMELY popular and is personally one of my favorite dynamics. But there’s a fine line to balance between fun toxic and actually sad toxic, I will always acknowledge that. Luckily our girls are the fun toxic and even became a healthy relationship by the end! Sam and Tory grow and start to learn to respect each other and learn to understand each other’s viewpoints. That’s just canon. So them being all cool and toxic together morphed into a a very sweet relationship.

And Sam and Tory would be sweet together! Their personalities actually mix very well together: Sam is the cool collected one and Tory is the hothead. They’d bicker, but in a cute couple way. They’d be extremely overprotective of each other. And they’d both integrate well into each other’s families. Amanda already had a soft spot for Tory, so both her and Daniel would welcome Tory into their home with open arms. Anthony would finally have a ‘cool’ sister and joke about keeping Tory instead of Adam if they broke up. And Grace and Brandon would live Sam. Sam would probably throw all the money she had to make sure Grace got the proper treatment she needed and to make sure Tory and Brandon could eat.

They do make a lot of sense.

They’re really cute at the end of the day, but my loyalty in particular lies elsewhere.

Conclusion: Does This Ship Sink or Sail?

Answer: Sail all the way

Sam and Tory are one of the most solid ships of the fandom, no cap. They’re fun, dynamic, and give the both of them a lot of depth. They’re a lot more interesting than Keenry in my personal opinion and while I do adore Samguel with my whole heart, I wouldn’t have been mad at all of these two ended up together.

I’m always happy to see any Samtory content and I will continue to vouch for them, even if I’m a Samguel shipper first.

Where Robby and Sam kinda made sense, given the circumstances, Miguel and Tory were a whole mess. Now they weren’t super toxic like other ships can be. They were just a really bad idea that kept going. It’s like if two people decided ‘Hey! How about we stick forks in an outlet!’ and they kept doing that until they inevitable got electrocuted. It wasn’t malicious but it was highly stupid and only got themselves hurt.

Now, Miguel cares about and respects Tory a lot. Miguel always respects his friends and partners and he defended her to Sam for a very, very long time. In fact, Miguel always defended Tory because he knew what she was going through. And Tory did grow to genuinely care about Miguel in turn. It’s a lie to say Tory didn’t care about him or vice versa. Of course they cared for each other.

But they were always better as friends.

Sam broke up with Miguel for being an idiot and Miguel rebounded HARD. Harder than Sam did and then some. A lot of people give Sam shit for dating Robby after Miguel and Kyler, which I don’t understand. Sam dating what she thought were two shitty, violent guys who mistreated others. Then Robby fell into her lap who in her time, was only ever kind, considerate, and didn’t bully others. I don’t blame her for liking him. Miguel though was the one who had the proper rebound. Tory is beautiful and assertive, just like Sam and she was there and flirted with him. Miguel is a dumb teenage boy, of course he decided to date her even though he was obviously not over Sam. Like at all.

In terms of Tory, always struck me that she kinda went after Miguel just to get at Sam. She already didn’t like Sam and recognized her from Miguel’s little apology video he made for her. You could see on her face the idea forming of taking Miguel for herself. She just wanted to take Miguel away from Sam as some weird petty revenge thing, only actually catching feelings after when she realized how wonderful Miguel really was. She actually sorta played herself in a way. She did hurt Sam, but she ended up hurting herself even more.

It was yet mother dumb idea that only a teenage could make. Their relationship is littered with dumb ideas.

Neither of them brought anything each other needed to the table. Miguel during their time together was the most toxic he’d ever been. He was at his deepest point in the Cobra Kai mindset, he was angry, sad, and not over Sam at all. He was still sweet and brought some security to Tory, but not the type that Robby brought. And Tory only made Miguel angrier with her mindset too; Tory was in a worst spot mentally for way longer and they had a weird symbiotic relationship where they worsened each other in a way. Not into the way they were bad to each other, they weren’t. But two depressed, angry kids doesn’t make for a healthy relationship.

This is why they work as a friendship and not a relationship. It is just a fact that some people can be amazing friends but are absolutely garbage when dating. I’m not even sure what does it, but it’s a fact of life. Tory and Miguel are really awesome as friends and they care a lot about each other. But it’s undeniable that they’re just bad together because they only get themselves hurt. Again, it was a bad impulsive idea that went on for way too long.

For ending statements, Miguel never loved Tory, that’s just abundantly clear. He just liked the idea of Tory. She was friendly, pretty, available, and not Sam. For Tory, Miguel was the pretty much the same to be honest. It was a bad relationship for both of them honestly and both fucked up in different ways, though I do think Miguel made the more critical errors in the entire line of it. He shouldn’t have dated Tory and he definitely shouldn’t have kissed Sam at the party. But Tory shouldn’t have been petty too.

They fucked up in the end and both learned their lesson pretty hard unfortunately.

Conclusion: Does This Ship Sink Or Sail?

Answer: Unfortunately, they sink

I love both Tory and Miguel a lot and I want them to be happy and healthy.

Unfortunately, they can’t be either of those things when dating. Perhaps season 6 Tory and Miguel could be functional, but even then I’m not sure. They just don’t seem to have the things that they need from each other.

Relationships are hard and, despite what people may want to think, it’s a give and take transaction. That’s why relationships are hard.

Tory and Miguel just fundamentally don’t have that. They’re excellent friends, they care about each other, but they aren’t in love and never were. I know some people ship them based on appearances or maybe like them being evil together, but I do not. In the case of them, I just want them to be happy.

They are simply happier and healthier being platonic.

Summary:

The ship I’ve had the most changing opinions on.

When they first happened I was shocked, and not in a good way. I know a lot of people REALLY love Keenry, and I do understand why. It’s not lost on me at all. It’s just how they got together that pissed me off. To this day I do believe they were placed together out of pure convenience and nothing else. It was a cop out pairing, the worst type of pairing. Miguel and Sam were endgame again, Demetri and Eli have whatever they have going on too. Robby and Tory were the last two single characters. It felt too perfect and too improbable. Tory and Robby had major beef beforehand and had very little time to connect. It would make more sense if they were a fling because broken hearts and trauma. But for them to fall in the way they did just doesn’t feel correct.

Seriously, Tory spent more time with Eli and didn’t catch feelings. Now I don’t think canon Tory would ever actually date Eli. He’s not her type and she isn’t his, but my point is two characters having time to connect. Narratively, those two getting together make more sense rather than Robby. Loyalty is huge to Tory and it is for Eli too. So for her to date Robby, who dated Sam, actively defended her during his time at Cobra Kai, and never did anything for Tory beforehand is weird. She just wouldn’t trust him without him really trying to prove himself, which I argue never actually happened. That’s not why Robby was there; he was there out of spite to hurt his dad and Daniel.

He wasn’t looking for love and neither was Tory.

Why would they?

Sometimes I feel both characters would be better off without romantic arcs. Tory and Robby are two characters that didn’t need to have romance, especially considering how much they had been burned by love. Their fulfillment was elsewhere; Robby needed a solid family and Tory needed family AND friendship. Having a romantic partner doesn’t automatically fix everything. It can help, but those two needed a strong support system that wasn’t as fickle as a romantic relationship, which teen relationships tend to be. Both got that needed from their dojos, that being found families and friendship that will last. So they didn’t need to date anyone.

They didn’t need to date each other.

Now, it sounds like I really don’t like Keenry with how critical I’m being, but that just not true.

I have grown to respect the pairing quite a lot. Not from anything the show did, it was written extremely poorly and I stand by that. It was actually the fans and the way the couple is written in fiction that I’ve grown to appreciate them. They can be a great couple! Robby, as stated previously in my Samrobby post, is extremely loyal and loving to his partner of choice and he’s the only one who actually identified with Tory on a personal level and saw her as her, not whatever image she put up. Tory kinda needs that, considering everyone else either uses her, or does not see the real her. Robby is always completely unconcerned with social status. He likes Tory because he likes her.

I have to reiterate how important it is how similar these two are. Robby and Tory can identify with each other. Shitty dad, mom who they usually have to take care of, did unsavory things to survive, and are seen as ‘bad kids.’ They know how it feels to be alone and unloved. They know how it feels to be so deeply angry at the world. The difference is that Robby got out of that mindset and knows good people exist. He’s more naturally empathic than Tory. And that’s not a dig at Tory, she has every right to be wary of the world. But he can show her that good things are still out there and bring her back some softness.

And Tory gives Robby fire. She doesn’t take things lying down like Robby tended to do. No one uses Tory. She’s the person who will actually confront a problem where as Robby might be passive. Much like Sam and Miguel, Tory wears the pants in the relationship and calls the shots. Robby is more than happy to let Tory do that too. It’s important she’s in charge of her own life and Robby would never try to make her do anything she didn’t want to do.

In those aspects, they are good for each other.

I try my best to do these two justice when I write, because they theoretically really strong. I just don’t like what the show did.

Conclusion: Does This Ship Sink Or Sail?

Answer: Sail

They are definitely sail, but I just wish the show made better choices. They needed to have more pre-S4 interactions and needed more bonding time. Small moments.

I wish she could have witnessed Robby with her mom or brother to see how mindful and caring he is. She could’ve seen what a good guy he is naturally.

We needed soft moments like that.

But I do like them together and I’m happy fic writers know how to write these two.
