I think a main reason that the homewreckers/clock duo/impdubs/whatever thing is so funny to me is that both of these middle aged dads just decided to rp a pair of smitten gay newlyweds and just went all in. Fully committed to the bit. They just did that. The personification of the ‘old man yells at cloud’ meme and that guy you saw at the home depot last tuesday picking up some plywood logged on to the block game and said yes we’re in love and kissing. And sleeping in the same bed btw. Living in a nice modern house with a decent sized swimming pool and an equestrian lifestyle. Marital bliss the likes of which most couples can only dream of. And for what. To get murdered by an unhinged Australian

Grian hears Impulse before he sees him.

Heavy footfalls on the grass, the heft of sturdy armour. He doesn't even bother to hide his sound.

Grian turns to face him, tilting his head just that bit higher than he's used to. He's just about to greet him, when—

Impulse leans on him. An arm on Grian's shoulder, a sigh on his lips as he bemoans his day.

Grian pauses.

Because the thing is he's not in love with Impulse and he knows Impulse is not in love with him. But in Bdubs' skin under Impulse's gaze he can see something warm there, something soft and not quite unguarded (Impulse never is) but it's the closest to affection that Grian has ever gotten from him. And for a moment he finds himself caught by the sight, a fly stuck in a web. And then he blinks and his mouth moves of its own accord and—

Impulse jerks away. Wide-eyed and shocked.

It shouldn't sting, but it does.

(He's been feeling that more and more these days.)

Grian misses the contact more than he should.

"I really thought you were Bdubs," Impulse says, an awkward laugh in his throat. The light in his eyes have dimmed. "Geez, G, that's so weird!"

Is it? Grian thinks, bitterness in the clench of his fists. Is it so weird for you to look at me that way?

Do I have to be someone else to be tolerable?

As Impulse leaves, something heavy settles on Grian's chest. It's not jealousy, not quite. It just hurts.

Because people relax around Bdubs in a way that they never have around Grian. Sure Bdubs is Yellow and Grian is Red and it shouldn't bother him but it does. People grin and they laugh and they look at him to join in rather than in wariness, and the feeling is magnified, now, in this forest with Impulse after his betrayal from Mumbo and all Grian can think is, Have I really been that awful?

Anger simmers and builds and burns in his gut.

Because his teammates are dead but they aren't buried. His teammates are dead and they're more than happy to try and kill him.

Bdubs has always had Etho. Bdubs has always been loved by Impulse. Bdubs has Cleo, has that smile, that charisma, that grin, that home.

The last time Grian had a home—

. . .

Grian scowls, swallowing back sand.

Whatever.

He's got people to kill. Red name things, you know how it is.

(It shouldn't hurt, so he decides that it doesn't.)
