I love characters who are loyal like a dog, this is true. But do you know what drives me insane? When the person they're loyal to sees that loyalty and doesn't even acknowledge it. To them the character is much more than what they can be used for or what they can do, they barely even see how much the character wants to be sent to hunt or to protect. All they see is their friend/lover/family/whatever else they are defined as. Even if the character tries to explain how they feel their person of interest is like "?? You are already useful (or you don't have to be useful), you are the object of my affections and you are great at doing that, there's no need for you to do anymore !" And the character just doesn't understand, they don't know how to believe that and I just aifhjfbkfhdidj

i believe that this is the first time that gon really gets a glimpse into just how much killua cares for him. all of killuas previous affections have been either while gon’s away or purposely hidden from him by killua himself…

so, gons reaction here is something that really REALLY GETS ME.

He’s shocked! he’s so surprised! killua has NEVER acted like this before, always calm and collected.

what does this say about what gon believes he is to killua? we, the audience, obviously know that killua holds gon on the highest pedestal, light itself yadda yadda. but gon? gon has NO clue that killua thinks all of that! from gon’s point of view, killua is just his bestie that tags along, nothing more. i don’t think gon believes he means a lot to killua, i don’t think he knows he means a lot to anyone, besides aunt mito, maybe.

after this fact, gon can’t get it off of his mind! he’s worried about killua, if he’s okay, that’s how ABNORMAL killua CARING is to him.

you could even draw that into the insult chapter, why gon reacts the way he does, why he truly believes killua DOES NOT care about kite.

also: since killua has always gone to great lengths to hide his fierce protectiveness over gon, he must have been SO damn stressed while entering ngl!! killua letting lose like this is rare (well, in later chapters we get his BREAKDOWNS and shit, but he would NEVER do that in front of gon.)

i do believe that killua wanted to act alone simply on the fact that A. he wants to protect gon B. because it’s simply easier for him to work alone.

i think reason B is less likely because killua KNEW he would bump into soldier ants eventually. we know that killugon working together can make quick work of soldier ants. they work perfectly in sync.

however i think gon’s response is what affected their relationship the most.

he does not promise killua that he won’t help people he sees dying. killua most likely just views this as just Gon being Gon, goodness and all.

however, since this is the first time killua has expressed concern for gon TO gon, and he is immediately shot down and ignored, his fear to open up in later chapters makes complete sense.

Gon does not get another word out about it besides his “Killua…” (gay asf if you ask me.) While gon is worried about the citizens, he’s worried about killua more.

also: the next time gon hears from killua is when killua calls him after being MISSING for a while, we don’t hear a lot about it, but you’ve all seen how Gon reacts once killua finally calls him.

he was SO worried!! and this ontop of killua being potentially hurt or dead, guilt must have been eating Gon alive. i imagine he wouldn’t want their last conversation to be an argument.

anyway: they make me sick, i think about this a lot.

I just want to say I appreciate you for staying positive about killugon. Admittedly, I’ve given up on them. Maybe it’s too many angsty fanfics or metas I’ve seen that basically make it seem like they’ll never be close again but it’s nice to see some people still going strong with this ship! Hopefully one day I can enjoy this ship again the way I used to. Currently everything I read about them in fandom just depresses me.

I'm sad to hear the negativity has gotten to you to this degree! It actually surprises me how much the fandom seems to think what happened between them can't be fixed. I've been into HxH for almost 8 years now and as time has gone on and I've revisited the series and analyzed it deeply and discussed it with others, I've only grown more certain that things between them will be okay--assuming Togashi can reach that point in the series. And right now is a great time to be hopeful about the future of HxH, with Togashi working so actively on the series the past few months.

Sooo many of the messages in my inbox amount to "Is there really hope? Are Gon and Killua really going to reunite and reconcile? Or is their relationship hopelessly broken?" so even though I feel like a bit of a broken record addressing this topic so much, it seems like it's a topic people really want addressed, so here's some more of my thoughts. (Trying to make my answers on this topic at least a little different each time even if some repetition is inevitable...!)

Here's this post I made of some of the reasons I anticipate a Gon and Killua reunion and fixing their relationship. And here's this eye-opening analysis post of the separation, yet again, which also offers hope.

So much of HxH is about second chances. It's about how love and human connections transform people and make life worth living, no matter how painful and difficult it may be. At the end of Chimera Ant Arc, Meruem and Komugi (who are, by the way, absolutely parallels for Gon and Killua) find their meaning for living in each other, and decide to stay together even knowing the only way they can be together is in the afterlife. If you trace back this scene to all the factors and character moments that made it possible, it goes all the way back to Gon extending kindness to Killua and changing his life. I believe Gon and Killua are on a path wherein they will ultimately find their meaning in each other and vow to stay together again (albeit without the dying part).

Gon and Killua are the protagonists of the series, and they are emblematic of the themes of HxH. Looking at the themes of HxH and the worldview it presents, it doesn't make sense for Gon and Killua to experience this horrible traumatic incident as the young teens they are, then never ever get to fix and resolve it even though they're both clearly upset to have to leave each other and they definitely have more to say to each other. Why show them feeling dissatisfied and unhappy to separate if they'll never get a chance to fix things and be happy together again? Do you really think that's the direction Togashi wants to go in, with the focus of the series and the repeated emphasis on how the hope we can find in a cruel, painful world rests in the connections we have with the people around us?

It's meaningful that they make each other so happy and transformed each others' lives. It's meaningful that even now in merch and artwork and such, they're portrayed as a pair. It's meaningful that a huge chunk of the audience so desperately wants to see them together again, and I'm certain Togashi is well aware of that. These two are at the heart of what makes HxH so wonderful and moving.

It's okay to take a break from the ship if it's not bringing you joy. Sometimes I get frustrated by takes and interpretations I see about it, too, trust me. Ultimately, it's here for you whenever you want to revisit it, and there are plenty of fanworks with happy endings and reconciliation between them if you need something to tide you over until canon hopefully resolves things between them. But do what feels right for yourself--it's okay to focus on something fluffier and less complex if that's what you need for now. I hope eventually you can come to see it with more hope, as I have lots of hope for their future--and I don't think it's unwarranted at all. 💖

Actually though, I love it because we really see Killua's character development in it. And with that, it also raises questions— it's not like Killua's suddenly the best, most developed person in the world. There are still things left to uncover, more questions about Alluka and Nanika, and it sets up future events in a really interesting way. The Killugon seperation hurts me but it intrigues me more.

Also the animation kind of slays??? Seeing Gon run up the world tree will never not make me cry. My sons all grown up ☹️🫶

And his little tantrum in front of it. Okay maybe my sons not ALL grown up, but he's up there!

Seeing Hisoka and Illumi together is just always a treat, I can never replicate it.

The new characters just instantly grew on me, literally love how Togashi manages that.

And, it's a breath of fresh air after the CAA. Gon finally gets a hug, he finally meets his father. And his reaction to everything just never fails to make me think.

With all that said, too, I just love Killua's godspeed. It might be one of my favorite abilities in fiction, purely because he starts glowing and looks so pretty. Like that's my boy ☹️🫶

I was thinking, do you have any fic recs for killugon that have great writing and an amazing balance between romantic/sexual tension and angst? To Summon a Witch by cyberflamingo - god!Gon and witch!Killua in a really unique fantasy au - another incredible read by this author, it has just as many intense feelings as the ones in Double-Edged Crown

starlight and star-crossed by Quintessence (@storybookprincess) - post canon memory loss au - Quintessence is an excellent writer especially with fluff/angst

your heart on the line by luftballons99 - post canon au that deals with a lot of Killua processing everything that went down between him and Gon - cool nonlinear storytelling that deals with Gon and Killua at various stages of their relationship but be warned the angst is real and it CAN hurt you like I've cried over this fic before but it is worth it

Ruin Our Friendship by @xyliane - high school fake dating au - I am and will be forever obsessed with xyliane's writing style and this fic has all the angst and pining that comes from fake dating tropes plus the idiocy of high schoolers

Not Selling Any Alibis by xyliane - secret identity assassins + roommates aged up au - warning this fic is Mature and not finished but it does not matter because the emotions I feel when I read this fic cannot compare to most completed fics

one hundred by wartransmission - post canon au about Gon and Killua traveling together again and eventually getting together - another not finished fic but it is so good okay I've read this fic so many times it's embarrassing

Wayward Souls by @driftingglass - fantasy au with mage!Killua and courier!Gon - the magic stuff in this au is super neat plus this author's writing style is just lovely

okay so, according to the databooks, killua and gon's bdays are may 5th and july 7th so they're taurus and cancer

BUT I wanted to see their whole birth chart compatibility... so I needed their birth locations to do it :sob:x10 so I went to the hxh worldmap like uh, any sane person

so for this part, we don't actually know where killua and gon were born, so I had to make several assumptions:

killua was born in the zoldyck estate, on kukuroo mountain (republic of padokea)

gon was born on whale island

whale island is located in that part of the map (gonna go with this redditor's theory)

so assuming killua was born on kukuroo mountain, he'd be born around algeria according to the hxh wiki

as for gon, we'd have to do a little more sleuthing because the location of whale island is actually unknown. but if we look at the map and do a rough correlation of where whale island is supposed to be in relation to kukuroo mountain (algeria in the real world), gon would be born somewhere in west europe maybe belgium or wales???

Hi! Sorry for taking so long answering! I wanted to write a good answer to this because I do actually have a lot of thoughts about it, so thank you for the ask! This ended up really long and as more of an analysis on their relationship in general… I want to preface this by saying that everything in this post is simply my interpretation of the characters, and that it’s only one interpretation of many. Just because how someone else interprets their relationship is different from mine doesn’t mean I think they’re wrong, it just means we see them differently! If you read this post, I hope you are able to see my point of view!

Although Killugon is one of my favourite ships ever, introducing romantic feelings so early into their dynamic makes their relationship feel less meaningful to me. I think that their friendship is more narratively important than their romance — and I think that both of them would be okay with the other not returning their feelings because being together is more important to them than being together romantically.

One of the things that makes their relationship so special is their friendship!! Their friendship is the foundation of their relationship, and the romance exists on top of it, not before it. Although I don’t think that romantic feelings would necessarily change their motivations and actions, I do think that it would alter how the audience would perceive them! And when we look at their actions through a romantic lens, it changes how we view their motivations.

For example, to me, the reason Killua approached Gon at the beginning of the Hunter Exam and wanted to become friends with him isn’t because he had a crush on him at first sight, but because he wants to have a friend his age and to feel like a kid. Even if it’s that he developed a crush on him later in the exam, I think that the idea of him already having been attracted to Gon or even in love with him during the Hunter Exam takes away from the importance of friendship to Killua, since the climax of Killua’s character in this arc is when he declares that he just wants to be friends with Gon when he feels like he can’t even have that.

I don’t think Killua really thought that anyone would be willing to confront his family for him because that’s literally an insane thing to do?? But Gon did it!! And I think that Gon being that insane and willing to risk his life for Killua is what really dragged him out of the darkness and gave him the devotion to be insane right back at him. 

On the other hand, with Gon, I feel like, when viewed through a romantic lens, his motivation during the Zoldyck Family Arc typically becomes that he’s going after Killua because he’s already developed feelings for him in the Hunter Exam Arc, which as you may have guessed, I don’t agree with. To me, that was something he’d have done for any of his friends — if Kurapika or Leorio suddenly started acting strangely and had run off when it seemed clear to Gon that they didn’t want to leave, I think he’d have chased after them, too.

We know that Gon is the type of person who would even risk his life to try to save someone he barely knows (if he likes them), like on the boat on the way to the Hunter Exam! And if I’m being completely honest, I don’t think Killua was even a particularly special friend to Gon until partway through Heaven’s Arena… If Killua hadn’t followed him and they didn’t speak ever again, Killua would’ve just been someone cool that he’d met and that he would no longer think about, and I definitely don’t think he had any romantic feelings for him by then.

That’s not to say that Killua wasn’t someone he considered a friend, just that I think that, at the time, to Gon, it was like when you make a friend at summer camp and then you lose contact as soon as you part ways. And while to Killua, Gon’s actions during Zoldyck Family Arc gave him this unpayable debt and made Killua extremely devoted to Gon, I don’t think it meant that much to Gon because again, I think this is something that he’d have done for any of his friends. However, by the end of Heaven’s Arena, I do think Killua has become someone who is special to Gon — on Whale Island, Gon tells Killua that he’s his first friend his age, and more than that, he’s someone that he wants to stay with.

In that same scene, they tell each other that they’re their first friend (their age). To me, this is something that informs so much of their dynamic — they don’t know what being friends with someone “normally” looks like, which is part of why they’re so insane!! And because of this, it’s important to me that there is at least a small period of time before this where that’s all they were — friends, no romantic feelings involved. 

Their insanity extends to romance, but is not because of it — their friendship is the most important part of their relationship. This is why even during the needle scene, where I feel like I can say that I definitely think that Killua has feelings for Gon at this point (his reactions during the “it has to be Killua scene,” the “Gon, you are light scene,” etc.), the emphasis is on how Gon is precious to him because he’s his friend, even though he is probably in love with him.

That friendship foundation is so important to how I see Gon and Killua and honestly, beyond the whole “viewing their actions through a romantic lens changes how we perceive them” thing, I just… don’t see either of them as being in love by the end of the Hunter Exam! These reasons are why it’s important to how I interpret their characters for there to be a period of time where their feelings are purely platonic.

Also, as an add-on, personally, I think that there’s a chance that Gon doesn’t return Killua’s feelings in canon even at their separation since nothing that he’s done, said, or thought has felt as explicitly romantic in nature as Killua. BUT I really like the idea of Gon pining for Killua on Whale Island during their separation, haha. The earliest I can conceive of when Gon starts developing feelings for Killua is Greed Island and a lot of it has to do with the shift in their dynamic — it’s when Gon starts really saying things to demonstrate his appreciation of Killua!!

HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean I perceive his actions as romantic in nature from his perspective. For example, while “it has to be Killua” is a romantic line, I don’t think Gon said it with romantic intent (nor that he’d be aware of them yet if he did have them)! I think that that was more for Killua, as well as planting the seeds in the reader’s mind for their romance, rather than a confession from Gon. Plus, imagine if he’d confessed his feelings for Killua to TSEZGUERRA instead of Killua when Killua is RIGHT THERE…

The other reason why Greed Island is the time where I think Gon is most likely to have developed feelings for Killua is because I really don’t think he was focusing on Killua in the same way in Chimera Ant Arc and it’d be a strange point in their relationship for romantic feelings to develop to me… I can’t imagine any of the moments in Chimera Ant Arc as being one where Gon would have developed feelings for Killua, or where he would have realized them. I like the idea that his realization happens sometime either during or after the separation the most!

On the other hand, I think that Killua probably had feelings for Gon by the start of Greed Island and realized them either during the dodgeball match or the “Gon, you are light” scene because they had the most romantic undertones to me from Killua’s side :) and I think that Killua could have developed them at any point after the Zoldyck Family Arc. 

I think that the way that their relationship develops is so beautiful and subtle that the romance ultimately feels very ambiguous. I don’t think that there is one specific point where we can say that either of them developed or realized any romantic feelings for each other definitively, and I don’t think there are any ideas that are necessarily wrong about when either happened, just ones that don’t align with each other! There are only different interpretations and ones that don’t align with each other and this post is only representative of my personal interpretation :) I hope this answered your question, Anon! I was just randomly thinking about this but can we like unnormalize making characters homophobic for "angst purposes" ? Like Kurapika would NOT get pressed just because Leorio has his contact name as "Sunshine" 🙁‼️ it isn't just Leopika this happens with Killugon and other ships as well😭 not trying to start any drama or anything like that but it's a bit concerning that so many people think Kurapika and/or Gon is homophobic? They've literally never shown disdain for LGBTQ+ people (especially Gon) so idk where people get the idea that they are homophobic?? Don't get me wrong I'm all for angst and I don't wanna seem like I'm policing headcanons but in this case it's just weird, I don't understand hcing characters who've never shown disgust or irritation to the LGBTQ+ community be suddenly homophobic 😓 even if it's like a internalized homophobia thing (as someone who had that in the past + internalized transphobia) like again if they don't show any negative emotions towards the LGBTQ+ community then I don't understand someone hcing a character as homophobic! Honestly this isn't even about ship angst anymore it's just characters in general 😭 I saw someone say that they don't like Ging (I'm sorry I always come back to this fucking man I just have to include him somehow) because he apparently "would be homophobic irl and not support Killugon"..?? Fuck it. Headcanon that Killua "stole" Gon's nen. Sealed it tight as fuck. Threw it at the bottom of the Dark Continent. Gon should have had it back after Nanika healed him. But Killua thought "nah Gon will probably just sacrifice himself again when he loses his cool" so Killua said fuck it and asked Nanika to put a padlock on Gon so he doesn't fuck up his life again. That's the reason Killua left Gon without worrying what Gon might do again. Gotta separate Nanika and Gon so Gon may never figure out why he's back to "ordinary" and will never find a way to get his nen back unless he finds another creature like Nanika which Killua is fairly sure is next to impossible. Gon is gonna be so angry when he finds out.
