Look Back Challenge day 1: Introduce your newest toy to the one you've had the longest.

Here's Rose Bear in her merbear tail and Genevieve! I'm bending the prompt slightly - Rosie is my 2nd oldest toy, received when I was 3 weeks old, and Genevieve is my 3rd most recent toy, received last July. (She is my most recent bjd, though)

There's a tradition amongst my toys, going back to when I was a kid, that when a new one arrives, dear old Rosie greets them and makes sure they feel welcome. Soon after Genevieve got here, Rosie put on her merbear tail (which I made for her several years ago) to make sure she wouldn't feel lonely as the only half-fish, half-land creature.

I've started work on the Xmas displays.

This year my overall theme is "Music and snowflakes". I'm going to pull down the bats and put up snowflakes and musical notes.

The BJD mantel display is going to be "Christmas Carolers." I've got a couple of American Girl music stands on the way, including the flute and violin. I'm considering a secondary display around the piano with the Yo-Sd kids and the tinies.

I've selected my "open mouth" sculpts for the most part. My new CeBee is going to be part of a separate display with the 1/3 scale girls; they are going to be dressed up in modern fashion.

I'm working with a friend to make some 1)4 and 1/4 scale Christmas carol sheet music folios. I can find scale sheet music for 1/6 and 1/2 dollhouses but not for BJDs.

If this works, we plan to put the PDFs up on Etsy soon.

My friend also created a BJD paper doll that we offered as part of the convention goodies a few years ago, so I suggested that we might like to put those up, too.

There's a Christmas meet this Sunday, so I'll be bringing some carolers to display!

At the start of the pandemic I lost my job and moved in with a close doll friend. She is an absolute star and basically took care of me for all of 2020. I recently got a cushy remote job (still living with said friend btw) and as a massive thank you (along with finally paying my half of rent and bills) I got my friend the fullset she wanted. The doll will be here by Christmas and I can't wait to watch her reaction as she opens her present!

For those who know which I assume is all of us, you cannot remove mould from vinyl, it spreads, it stains, and Danny did not offer replacements for these spoiled goods. How can you run a luxury company like a street stall and get away with it? This is unacceptable for a new product.

I never noticed how skinny p0povy dolls are until I saw their newish Venus body. That body, which is called 'renaissance' and 'plus-sized' looks like my US size 4 body, and it makes the 'normal' p0povy dolls look deathly. The fact they act like that's what a plus-size body looks like is so unhealthy.

The sculptor and owner of Echotown Dolls sued the recast bastard Luo Li-Gui in Chinese court and won! Luo is attempting to appeal, but the initial court case was won! This is an uphill battle. It’s believed Echotown only won because they are Chinese in a Chinese court. Lillycat or any of the Korean companies, etc, may have a harder battle as Chinese courts tend to side with their own people. Still, we can hope!

It’s been over two years since I found out my work has been pirated. During this period we spent a year to gather evidence and wait. Last July we have officially filed a lawsuit against the recaster and a lot of our friends are interested about the results. It’s been a long time, so I want to make an announcement. In May of this year, we have received the verdict from the Middle Court of Intellectual Properties of Chengdu City. The resolution is the accused, Gui-De Industries Limited of Jiangxi Province and Zhongshe Toy Limited of Taihe Region stop the production of items resembling the items that are being claimed as pirated: “Delores”, “Aya”, “Fiona”,” Pepper” and “EchoTownDoll body ver2”; compensate the plaintiff’s financial loss of $450,000 RMB as well as all the other court expenses. The accused also has to make a public announcement detailing the verdict to reduce the amount of effect their piracy has caused.

I know there are a lot of recasters. I didn’t “hit” you today, not because I can’t – if I wanted to, (I can do it) anytime. When the new series, GuangHe girls release in August, I already know someone is ready to recast them. You have seen how patient I have been when dealing with recasters. All the dolls have been registered for copyright. All the logos on the dolls and the brand name have all been filed for trademark as well. Please be considerate. If you steal from the hard work of other people, eventually you will spew it all back up.

The long path to defend copyright is indeed an investment of time and money; we gathered evidence multiple times and went to court multiple times. During the process I have been hesitant as well. If I sacrifice so many days and energy but the recasters eventually still get away with it, the creators will be faced with an even more adverse situation. Our country is transforming into a powerhouse of intellectual properties creation, and the country is working hard on protecting intellectual properties. I believed the courts would eventually give out the most justified verdict.

BJD can be considered a kind of consumer art, maybe. It has a small audience and it’s not well-known, but that doesn’t mean it’s not protected. During this process I had to explain what a BJD is to every inspector and clerk in minute detail. Some of the things I thought were self-evident had to be explained one at a time. Many a time, I really wished I wasn’t just a simple, silent creator. I wanted to be bright and visible; I want a lot of people to see me, that way it wouldn’t be so hard to raise my voice. I hope BJD is not just a toy for a small crowd. Its beauty is worth your recommendations. Yes, it is an expensive toy, it’s been misunderstood, but that doesn’t mean we can simply shut up about it. We have to get over the “In crowd” and “Out crowd” concept in order to go further in the future. A strong group is the armour for the individual original creators.

Even if someone fight to register a trademark first doesn’t mean I will simply let go of my rights, I will fight. Also, the accused do not agree with the verdict and decided to appeal. I am not alone. I am not afraid to see the final justice being delayed. We will see you again in the appeal court.

So remember a while back when people were expressing their concerns that recasters were growing at an exponential rate to a point where their “dolls” were looking more legitimate and caused speculation of them being factories, especially Luo, and the pro theft gang was like “you’re exaggerating” and dismissed it because of their assumption it was just a small group of people?

Yea no, that was a fucking lie

ChinaBJD has literally grown to the point where they have a whole staff of people that work different departments of their company, created multiple fake recast hybrids to slide past copyright violations, offering full sets for their counterfeits, selling their counterfeits to other sellers like a wholesale item, offering their own casting service that we’ve learned as of recent, and are now selling other doll products to increase their revenue. This is honestly so appalling how far they’ve come when the majority of the artists they’ve stole from are still small businesses with not even close to 10 employees, some still are SINGLE artists in the same amount of time they’ve grown to a literal goddamn factory.

They would have NEVER gotten this far if they didn’t have a dedicated fan base of supporters, aka the pro theft/pro recast/anti artist gang consistently buying their shitty counterfeits. And I’m not talking about the people who got their counterfeit by accidental purchase or as a gift, I’m talking about those who buy purposely seek out Luo and buy their fakes at a disgusting rate and the scum who purposely send dolls to be recast.

So to those pro theft people who brushed off how Luo wasn’t going to grow past a small operation and those who purposely keep putting money in their pocket, if you ever wonder why no one in the community wants to deal with your people or even humor you all? This is why. You all have given so much money and motivation to for a counterfeiter become a LITERAL GODDAMN FACTORY that has become direct competition to the artists who make the dolls you love so much and act like it’s not a big deal when it is. And if you think I’m “exaggerating” go to the link below for their Alibaba where they have listings set up to sell their counterfeits as wholesale or search “Taihe Zhongshe Toy Co., Ltd.” on google and look at their Company profile. This is no longer a “small operation, it’s a full blown counterfeiting business.

I moved house!

Went quiet for a while- I still have to unpack my dollies and set up a new doll shelf but I am sooo excited to be in my new space with my boos. I have a looot to look forward to this year in the dolly department:

- pisces’ body (dc 36cm body) on order from my birthday that I’m waiting on! I think it’s month 5 now. aaaaaah. i need to get pisces wig still too.

- 2 more layaway payments on dz candice, it’s month 4 for this one. -breathes heavily- i see so many DZ yosds secondhand and it’s SO PAINFUL

- AND!! I just ordered my housewarming dolly gift to myself with the paycheck I got from a big art commission, and that shipped literally today since she was in stock... I’m so excited I could just burst but I don’t wanna talk about it too much until she’s here and in my hands which could very well be this week hhhhh

- me and my bestie might do a joint LUTS dolly order for christmas so they can get their first (well, second~) bjd <3 (I want a tiny20!!! aaaa)

Sold doll

just having a walk trough memory lane and looking at all the dolls I got rid of at some point

There was Nameless, a 5Star Amy.

I got her for free as a part of an event, I made her character a mysterious elven child that just turned up one day, she was also mute. The doll had great engineering and was super cute, I would definitely recommend if you want a 30cm child doll. I however quickly discovered that I don’t care for child dolls, so she was the first one I sold.

Then there was Zombie Lucy, Resinsoul Mei.

A bit of an embarrassment, she was indeed my first doll, however I did some weird shit with the sealant when I tried to do a faceup, resulting in a thick hard layer of white crap being stuck on her face and joints. I couldn’t find a way to remove it at the time and ordered a new Mei and modded this one into a zombie version of Lucy from an alternate universe where the heroes lost the battle against the Lord of Undeath. I sold her for dirt cheap to a friend in the hobby who really liked that mess of a doll.

Then there was Xun-Riia, a 5Star who’s sculpt I can’t recall.

5Star had some amazing events back in the day, this is another doll I got for free. I even made a poor ear mod on her. Honestly I can’t remember much about the character I made for this doll. She was huge for a 1/4 doll though, her head was almost 1/3 size. the engineering and design of the body also left something to be desired compared to 5Star’s 1/6 and 1/3 dolls, I don’t know if they have made improvident, this was back in 2013. 

Lalena was a Soom Cuprit body with a 5Star Angelo head

She was basically made of spare part, a free event head and a body I had to get with a head I wanted, paired with eyes and wig that I wasn’t using. She was mostly just an ascetics doll, I repainted her a few times before growing bored and selling her.

Lucy #2, my replacement Resinsoul Mei/Fei

I think there’s a valid reason this is a very popular starter doll, she’s very pretty. However my tastes changed and quickly my main doll started to look big headed and child-like compared to the rest of my collection, so she was replaced by a grey Withdoll Angela that I had been wanting for a long time. I still miss having a sleeping head for Lucy though. I gave her to a none hobby friend in hopes of recruiting her, but I’ve pretty much lost contact with her.

Zehelico, Resinsoul Song

He was replaced for similar reasons. He was based of a big square jawed character and the moment Resinsoul introduced Sui/Tang I knew the soft faced Song had to be replaced. The Song doll is still tucked away in my basement, I doubt I’d get much for him.

Ixafey was a Soom Roxen.

She was a very cute doll with some nice assets. However she was my one remaining doll with a huge head, and combined with that rather child-like body, it was getting a bit creepy shelling a rather sexual character in that sculpt. So I sold her.  I wouldn’t mind if Soom released a more adult 1/4 body, I know they made a boob chest for the line, but the head sculpts are still very big eyed and their hands and feet are child proportions.

Dexter was a Soom Puss in Boots

His character was a scruffy 1920′s PD who was also a werecat, I wouldn’t mind reshelling him one day in a smaller scale. To this day he’s the doll I have spent and lost the most money on. I got almost the full set. I decided to get rid of my Soom 1/3 dolls because they were very unwieldy and took a lot of space. I sold him.

Elanor was a Soom Cuprit with a human body.

She was in the same setting as Dexter, she was a nightclub singer and informant, no romantic subplot though. I probably wouldn’t re-shell this one though even if I got a new Dexter, I would just slot in Helfrid in that role as she’s immortal and from the same setting. Obviously I sold her for the same reason as the previous.

Tirahya, Withdoll Angela

Withdoll Angela might be my all time favourite sculpt and I am still very fond of the aesthetic of this doll. However when I got anoter one to shell Lucy, Tirahya kind of fell to the side as she was based on a D&D character concept that I never played, so in the end I made the choice to sell her.

Veps, DreanHigh Chibi Feiline

I got her as a tiny doll I could easily bring around, however even then I didn’t quite know what to do with her after a while, so I gave her to @karla-chans-bjds as a Christmas present, she kept the name and I’m sure a lot of you mainly know her as Karla’s doll anyway.

My grandma has loved my doll ever since I got him. She gets excited every time she sees him. He’s actually one of the more masculine msd boy sculpts that I’ve seen but my grandma thought he was a girl when she first saw him. I never bothered correcting her because it didn’t really matter that much to me. She likes to sit with my doll sometimes when she does her crossword puzzles and she must have snuck some measurements because she surprised me with a pink dress that she had made for him on my birthday.

It’s not at all the style that I had in mind for him but it made her so happy when I put it on him and it’s actually pretty cute and well made so I figured I’d let him wear it now and then. After that, she kept making him more and more dresses. The look started growing on me so I decided to incorporate it into his character. Sometimes, I’ll come home and I’ll see that she’s put him in a new dress and it’s the sweetest thing. I think I’m gonna start working on getting a bjd for her this Christmas. 😊

I was baby sitting my niece (she's seven) when my new doll (msd) arrived in the mail. She was super curious about the box and insisted I opened it. We opened it together and I've never seen her so excited, not even on Christmas. I got out the box of clothes, wigs and eyes and we spent the whole afternoon dressing the new doll up and giving him different looks. My niece loved it and I'm tempted to order her a smaller sized bjd for her birthday.

So a fun thing I used to like to do when I got a new body was to try all my current heads on it. Or when I got a new head I'd try it on all my bodies even if I had a body for it already or had one in mind. I haven't done it so much lately and I was idly considering having a go. And it occurred to me I have 20 SDs now. If I tried every head on every body that would be 400 combinations. That's insane.

I have eleven female heads, nine female bodies, nine male heads, eleven male bodies, but there's a mismatch amongst them as I recently got a male head on a female body and the head has stolen one of my other guy's body and the female body is awaiting a head I'm not gonna see for several months yet. All of my male bodies are different, amongst the girls there's two sets of duplicates but one pair has different legs and one has a modded bust and the other pair have different chest pieces. Twelve of my heads are by Impldoll, two Little Rebels, two Resinsoul, one Angelsdoll, one Angel of Dream, one Ringdoll and one Iplehouse. Five of the bodies are Impldoll, five Resinsoul, three Angel of Dream, two April Story, two Doll Family H, one B&G, one Five Star Doll and one Mirodoll.

Six of them have black hair, six have brown, one is ginger, one is ginger-ish, three are blonde, two have auburn/purple hair and one I've yet to decide. Eye colour can vary a bit as some are still in the process of finding a perfect fit.

I one day mean to sort of catalogue all my dolls - I've already reached the point where I can't remember exactly when I got each of them or even the specific order, and most of them are hybrids. I have two dolls on their default body, three on bodies from the same company as their head. Several have different hands to their originals. At least 10 of them have some degree of subtractive modification, two have additive mods, not counting others with unseen additions, reinforcing other mods. Right now 9 of them are wearing wigs I made, eleven have eyes that I made. Other than my SD sizes I have three yosds, two tinies, one deer, a robot and a fairy that possibly falls under the category of tiny but she's in a different scale.

Which one is my favourite? I don't feel like I favour any of them but it's probable I do. For a while it seemed everything I got for my girls was for my first girl and the rest just got to share it but I try to be more fair now. Most of their clothes are communal aside from the larger boys, but I have bought a few outfits with a specific doll in mind. I like fantasy/steampunk styles and casual every day styles. I usually swap their outfits around every couple of months and there's normally a theme - Christmas jumpers in December, Halloween costumes in October, summer wear when it gets hot, formal attire etc. Right now they're all in winter coats. But not shoes because they live in a separate box under the bed which is a pain to drag out so despite the fact I love bjd shoes, 8 of my dolls currently don't have them. Also a lot of my boots are suffering pleather disintegration right now which is such a shame.

I feel like I just answered a load of prompts unprompted. I should go to bed.

Deerlee, my new Magic Mixies Pixlings was fun to conjure using the potion ingredients included. (See my other post on the topic.)

Here she is with her skirt turned around. (The "right" way, IMHO) I found it weird that she arrived with the tail on the front of her skirt.

Also, special note; this is the second one of these that I brewed the magic potion for, and the second one to wind up with blue potion in the bottom of the doll's inner container. I want to point out that the little collectors guide for the toy line sits at the bottom of that tube. So be prepared to rinse that off gently and lay it out to dry.

She's got human feet, but her shoes have widdke hoofikins, and I love them.

However. Girl... Why is your tail in front. Whut.

Here's Unia, her sister. This was the first doll I opened, and I followed the directions over the sink. For Deerlee, I set up on the table. If I put a waterproof tablecloth on, I think it will be totally fine.

So naturally, I had to do some photo shoots.

Here's Ming, my BJD tiny reindeer, all dressed up for Christmas. One day I will finish her face up and hooves.

I really like these dolls. I have the mermaid, also. She might stay in my collection, or go to my Grandbaby. She's certainly getting the Unia, but if she gets totally excited about it, I'll whip out the Merina Mermaid so her Unia can have a friend. They're better in pairs or groups, I think.

I'm told that the Special Edition Bunny has a completely removable dress, unlike the molded-on top and removable skirt on these two, but I'm not going to let that stop me from making them custom outfits. The bunny isn't that great.

There is apparently a butterfly (Flitta) as well; she may be another exclusive, and she's marvelous. I might see if I can snag one in the post-Christmas sales.

They're not as possible as a BJD or MH, but they do have joints at the elbow, shoulder, hip and neck. I want shoes for these girls; their feet are darling. Moose! Make accessory packs!!!

Oh, and the stand doesn't help much. I'm going to have to dig out my small BJD stands.

Back in 2009, I think, we had a Jolly Dolly Christmas.

It started because I found out which sculpt a friend wanted. She really wanted to join in on the BJD craze that was sweeping our friends circle, but she had a new baby and didn't really have the funds or time.

I found the doll she wanted, used on eBay. I bid on it, and let the circle know that I was getting it. I received donations from pretty much the whole circle of friends. I told the seller what we were doing, and she threw in some extras when I won the auction.

As we all gathered around to watch her open it, squeezing and vibrating with excitement, my mom sidled up to another friend who couldn't afford to play. "This is for you, hon." It was her first resin doll.

Mom and I had been bidding against one another on a series of dolls that Junky Spot was dumping on eBay, and so we started collaborating instead. There were like 6 or 7 gift dolls that went out that year.

One person got into it, then decided to sell her doll later. No hard feelings. One person traded with someone else because of color preferences. (White skin for blue.) The one with the baby? Still has and loves her doll.

If I could afford it, I would be delighted to help anyone get their first doll. However, the whole recast problem is making it harder to do these days.

So if I give a doll, and it's the "wrong one" I'd be happy to help the recipient get the right one. I'm never offended if someone exchanges or sells a gift I gave. I exchanged a sweatshirt for a Barbie when I was about 10 years old, and the ain't who gave it to me was so sunny and happy that I was able to use her gift to "get what I really wanted" that I've carried that energy with me ever since.

I don't believe that all the stories of relatives who UNKNOWINGLY bought a gift that turned out to be a recast, but I grant that some may be. And I used to wish that I got a BJD gifted, but now I see it more like a potential burden? Why won't people ASK their kid/grandkid/niece/nephew FIRST before buying the gift?! And besides the recast threat, there is also the aesthetic aspect: How does this grandma know her grandkid has the same visual TASTE?!

Especially about something SO particular, when even a small difference between sculpts may make such a big difference... Not to mention the 'mistake' which then becomes a burden is not a flavour of chocolate you don't like and just give away to someone... it's a freakin doll that costs still a lot of money, recast or legit. Please, people!

Don't ever feel guilty over reselling such a 'gift' which was more about the person giving it than about you... if it was, they'd have just given you the money to chip in! I once got an expensive parfume which stenched like scented vodka (saying hi to gucci) and sold it to buy a vacuum... BEST DECISION EVER! Good luck on your upcoming Christmas gifts! :D I hope none of you gets a recast or a 'surprise' doll they don't like the body of.

I'm new to the hobby and found a cheap doll on eBay & I didn't know it would be a recast. My parents got me her for Christmas and I can't help but feel a little bad because like ??? it's not real and I'll get so much shit for it but at the same time my parents spend a lot of money (90.00) on her so :( what do i do ??? help ??

First of all Anon, you shouldn’t feel bad, either if you decide to beprorecast or antirecast (“pro artist”), you didn’t knew. It was an honestmistake, and whoever can’t (or doesn’t want to) understand it; it’s theirproblem, not yours. Second of all, that doll is real (as real as any legit). The only things youwon’t get are the company box, and a set of papers. Have a lot of legits myself and never usethe boxes or the COAs (“Certificates Of Authenticity”) and the other papers. IfI need to know something about my doll I just google it (if you are afraid ofscrew her up, ask and we will advice you). So it’s not like you’re getting aBarbie “as a bjd”, you are getting a real ball jointed resin doll. It’s arecast?, yes. But that doesn’t make it any less real. If you like it, and if youlove it, that’s the only thing that actually matters.

You won’t get “so much shit for it” if you stay on recast friendly places.Fortunately we are almost entering a new year, and it’s almost 2018. By nowthere are countless recast friendly communities where you can share, interact,talk and socialize with other pro recast people, that, if you stay out the “legitonly” elitist circles, you should be completely fine to enjoy the hobby. If anyone insults youonline, block them and move on, don’t even take the time to reply. They are notworth it. I will list you some forums and places so you know where to start:

Forums: CastawayDolls or Recast Sanctuary

Facebook: You can find groups if you FB search the words“Recast BJD” and look on the “groups” section.

Youtube: pro recast YouTubers can be found by searching“Recast BJD Box opening” on YouTube.

There are also a lot of other places you can open anaccount for your doll, from Instagram to Tumblr or Flickr (if you likephotography, even if you use your cellphone camera you can get cool pictureswithout spending a lot of money). Just make sure you are on recast friendly or “prorecast” spaces, and if anyone is giving you a hard time online, block them andignore them.

You said it yourself; your parents spend a lot of money on her, be happy andgrateful, they are your parents and they spent that money because they love youand want to make you happy. Give your doll a chance to have a caring and lovinghome, and your parents to see that their efforts where good. Many antirecast (“proartist”) will tell you to tell your parents that you realize “this doll is shit”and that you should burn or destroy or throw her away because “it’s garbage”. They are absolutelyinsane from a normal human point of view. Don’t even hang with, or hearthese people “advice”. If you pick her up from hundreds of listings on eBay itwas because you loved that doll, so do just that, receive it and love her. It’snot only your doll but a present from your parents who it’s obvious to me they loveyou and want to see you happy. The so called “ethics” on this hobby are very screw up dear Anon, they judgea person based on how much they can spent, and completely ignore any act oflove like the one your parents did for you. In the end, it’s people you don’t know on theinternet. I know it’s hard to understand if you where born over “the digital era”,but your family it’s way more important than a group of online elitist bullies.

Keep it, love her, be grateful for what your parents have done for you, and(if you excuse my words), fuck the rest of the world.

The doll it’s just asreal and beautiful as it was the day you chose her from eBay. That’s my personal advice to you Anon, hope you have a wonderful Christmas.

My aunt knows me well and got me a spotlight voucher for Christmas. Went in today and everything was on sale so I managed to get lots of new fabric. The burgundy and mustard were specifically bought with my peachdaydreams onedat in mind. He'll be getting some cute shirts once he gets here. #bjd #sewing

30 Day BJD Challenge! Day 4

What/who was the first BJD you ever owned? Do you still own them? Technically not a BJD, but it was my first doll. Someone I followed on DeviantArt had some Pullips and I asked where she got them and a few months later I got it for Christmas. Now I will admit I was in a super weeboo phase so the more Harajuku looking the better for me. Anyway I loved her to bits, but I was sharing a room with my sister and she hated her so one night after taking a ton of pictures of her I left her downstairs in a box and the next morning I found her torn apart. My dog had gotten into the box and ripped her apart because, well he's a dog. I was super deviated, cried at school, looking back it was super embarrassing, but my step dad said he would match whatever money I managed to save up and help me buy a new one. I got a different doll because she was out of stock then got another one of her for Christmas. I still have the second Pullip I bought, but gave the replacement to a friend.
