i think that while micro labels can seem useful and affirming ultimately they're isolating and kind of an obstacle to your understanding of self. that's because you can never find a word specific enough. there will never be a label or two labels or even ten, twenty of them to perfectly capture and describe all of your thoughts, feelings, experiences, preferences, needs, interests, identities, etc. because you learn more and more about yourself every day and then you change and your wants and needs change with you. having to hop between labels, fearing that you don't 'fit' into a label anymore (both in your own and others eyes), worrying how soon your current label will wear out, questioning if you'll ever fully fit a single one. all that causes a lot of uncertainty and anxiety which could be avoided by just picking a more general thing and molding it according to what it means to YOU. because words will always mean different things to different people, you will never be understood immediately and maybe never completely by anyone but yourself and that's fine

Crys: - doesn't bat an eyelash, kills it easily - merciless, 10/10

Icarus: - a lil startled, will jump if it flies at him, but manages to catch it and set it free outside - 8/10. this boi is too good for this world

Rhyme: - begins by trying to smash it to a pulp - rapidly gets more and more irritated when she keeps on missing - finally lets out a primal scream of rage and fireballs it - 6/10 because she nearly burns down the house

Sol: - lets out an undignified squeak - leaves the room - if it flies at him he's sprinting out of there - 3/10

Dahlia - rolls up a newspaper and whacks it a few times?? like a normal person??? - 9/10

Beatriz: - faints - poor bbg can't handle the terror - 0/10 - alternatively shoots her feathers and skillfully punts it out the window - so overall actually 5/10

Iri and Yuan: - incoherent screeching - KILL IT KILL IT WITH FIRE - both trying to get behind the other - so many feathers embedded in the floor. so many - Iri scales up Yuan's back and stays there on his shoulders like an overgrown squirrel - 0/10

Mmmmmm I dunno, I really had to wrack my brain for this one, I don't know if I have a lot of thoughts that can be considered 'controversial' by a majority but:

I think some whump trigger tags are a little too specific. Like, if you're in the whump community and you need that many tags to not ruin your day and cause you to send hatemail to a random blog...then maybe whump isn't really for you? Especially if it's with popular tropes, too, like, I'm sorry, but that's like going to Subway and getting mad that they have pickles and don't have it separated with cucumbers, vinegar, and salt labels. You're in a sandwich shop, you know what they're gonna have, and you know what those ingredients are gonna contain.

BUT...I am also someone who has 0 squicks and just genuinely can't relate to that, you know? I don't know what it's like to get icked or distressed by things like pulling teeth or amputation. So, yeah, I'm sure I'm the one in the wrong with this hot take. I know it's actually super important to be as nitty gritty as you can with tags, even if I see no difference between "hand whump" and "fingore" and think it's weird to tag specific body parts anyways.

I'm obviously not going to be an asshole and not tag it when it's clearly helpful or I'm politely asked, though. I respect different strokes for different folks. If it makes the rest of the community happy, then what does it matter that I think certain tags are kinda dumb? It's not gonna kill me to use 3 extra seconds to add said tags to my post when needed lmao

I have a lot of wips so i’m just gonna do a couple more recent ones. And they're all tua, they're all about Five.

1. Hide the Morning from the Stars - The thing that started this one was a line I heard that went, “I just wanted to be loved!” It another one of those post-everything Five acclimating to a peaceful life poorly type fic. The siblings are pretty caught up in rebuilding their own lives, as you do, and so Five proceeds to have the loneliest first year of retirement ever. This one also leans pretty heavy into something @mangoshorthand posted or reblogged a few whiles back about Five struggling to reconnect with Grace because she reminds him of the Handler. 

2. Howling still counts as a wip because i cannot go a full 24 hour period without thinking about it. It’s just sitting in my brain, simmering in all the juices. I’m working on this one constantly. Like all the other wips are on a constant rotation, but this is the big fat star they inevitably orbit.

3. Selkies and Shit - my attempt at mermay masked author but i haven’t gotten very far with it. I don’t even know how to describe this one. The kids were selkies, the Handler was a pirate who was keeping Five and Lila’s skins, and everyone in the world had forgotten all their memories from more than six months prior. No one knew why, but it had something to do with the Moon being missing and the ocean being tide-less. 

4. Planned Obsolescence - that fic where the Commission put a kill switch in Five in case he ever defected and then it slowly kills Five when he defects to be with his family. Here’s a tid bit from that one.

5. the delicate parts of us - it’s... a wing fic. anyone remember that really gory wing eruption scene in Haibane Renmei? yeah, i watched that as a kid and this isn’t the first time i’ve been inspired by it. Kind of dumb, actually, but mostly about Five asking for help.

6. And an untitled post-season 3 fic about Five being human trafficked and saving some kids and generally having a bad time and then a less bad time when his family shows up.

remember that, like, six-month period of time when tumblr was really into hyperspecific hyperbolic feelings-about-characters descriptions, like 'i want to carry them in my handbag like a tiny dog' or 'i want to tuck them into bed and read them a bedtime story' or whatever?

in the middle of that i did a character opinions meme thing and calyx asked about big barry syx, about whom i wrote the words "i would be the friendly tavern innkeep who gives discounts on food and ale to their favorite patrons to his rugged fantasy adventurer trope, if you know what i mean'

i think about that occasionally because i want to talk like that all the time. i worry no one will know what i mean. it's such a specific collection of feelings/opinions that i dont know how to process/express and moving them to that hyperspecific hyperbolic description just works in a way thats so fun
