Food charity pauses Gaza work after staff killed in Israeli strike

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the target of the strike had taken part in the 7 October attacks on Israel, and was currently employed by the WCK.

WCK said it was "heartbroken to share" that a vehicle carrying staff had been hit and it was seeking more details, though added it had "no knowledge" that anyone in the car had ties to the 7 October attacks.

Separately, British aid agency Save the Children said one of its staff members was also killed on Saturday afternoon in Khan Younis.

Ahmad Faisal Isleem Al-Qadi, 39, had been returning home to his wife and three-year-old daughter from a mosque when he was killed, the charity added.

"Ahmad, who was deaf, will be remembered for his determination to help others, for his pride in his daughter, and for his ability to brighten others’ days", Save the Children said in a statement.

Iran condemns Israeli strikes on Syria, calls on UN to respond

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esma’eel Baqayi condemns the latest Israeli attacks on Syria as a blatant violation of the UN Charter, international law and Syria’s sovereignty.

Baqayi on Thursday warned against the continuation of the Israel’s “expansionist and aggressive actions” on Syrian territory. He called on the international community, especially Islamic countries, “to condemn Israel’s aggression and take swift action to stop the violations.”

He said Israel’s attacks on Syria are a blatant violation of the UN Charter, international law and Syria’s sovereignty, adding that the repetition of such acts of aggression is tantamount to an invasion.

The spokesman called for an “immediate response” by the UN Security Council to stop Israeli aggression and violation of international peace and security.

Late Tuesday, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on several sites in the countryside of Damascus and Daraa province in southern Syria, days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the “demilitarisation” of the region.

Netanyahu also made clear that Israel has no intention of withdrawing from southern Syria, insisting that Israeli forces would not allow Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants “to enter the area south of Damascus.”

HTS militants toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad in a surprise offensive in December.

Israeli strikes kill 9 in Gaza as war enters new year

Israeli strikes killed at least nine Palestinians in Gaza as the nearly 15-month war entered a new year, according to AP News.

One of the strikes hit a house in the Jabaliya area in the north of the enclave. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that seven people were killed, including a woman and four children, with at least a dozen others wounded.

The second strike targeted the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. A woman and a child were reportedly killed in the strike.

Israel’s air and ground offensive killed more than 45,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. However, the Israeli military argues that it is only targeting militants. It also blames Hamas for civilian deaths, as militants often hide in densely populated areas.

The war caused widespread destruction and displacement of about 90 per cent of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million. Hundreds of thousands of people live in tents on the coast as winter brings frequent downpours and nighttime temperatures dip below 10 degrees Celsius (50 F).

The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on 7 October 2023, killing about 1,200 people and capturing about 250. Nearly 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, at least a third of whom are presumed dead.
