Web development is certifiably not something simple to do. At the point when you initially conclude this is something that you are keen on, it’s exceedingly difficult to know where or how to get everything rolling.

so today i messed around with react and managed to get this navbar working:
i looked at a tutorial the other day and tried to actually apply it to today....idk how to properly style the navbar so gonna try to figure it out next time if possible!
#so yea now i gotta learn more stuff hahahaha#on the brightside react looks really easy to work with once u start to get the hang of it#at least in comparison to what i was doing before!#and also i dont need my site to be super fancy right off the back#so im gonna just try to fix the navbar for a short while and then move to the next thing#which ig is the login page#the reason i started using react in the first place#my only issue is that the tutorial i used was really good but only the first part of it was free#and i dont have 150 dollars for a tutorial so.....#idk ig i have to look for another tutorial and hope its the same level of quality and also in typescript#cause the tutorial i was doing it in had it in typescript#also apparently its easier to write in than js....#anyways thats my progress today#see my character development from being reluctant about react to now being like...this is really useful#web development#codeblr#if yall have a good react tutorial that uses typescript...pls send it my way#im thinking ill have to start using next.js after this cause i need the backend stuff later#and it would save time ig??

oh yes i am having a wonderful sunday. hmm? what am i doing? thinking about knowledge management systems and mental models in the digital age, and how they might evolve as our technology advances (or, honestly, crashes) of course
#hierarchical structure vs webbed#hierarchical is typical (computer file folders) but requires one to remember the top level#webbed is more dynamic#but ofc the star of the show no matter what is metadata#cataloging and classification my beloveds#i am investigating the zettlekasten system rn and i am intrigued#so like: zettlekasten was developed physically but became more approachable in the digital age bc we can know take advantage of software#(ie obsidian) that makes it easy to input recall and connect notes. it's all very fascinating to me good thing this is my whole career

#melon rambles#guess who got a programming job that's going to use a bit of web development and guess who doesn't remember ANYTHING about#HTML or JavaScript and never even touched CSS#SQL I'm hoping(?) will be pretty easy once I get into it because from what I understand of it it's pretty much like excel and stuff to do#with handling lots of data#which I can kind of do#it's mostly HTML and CSS that scares me#I was pretty upfront with my employer about 'hey we haven't covered this stuff in my classes yet and I'm pretty rusty'#so they're not expecting me to be able to do much with that yet#but I would like to prove myself useful at this job so they'll hopefully employ me over the summer and get a pay raise or more hours#so that way I don't have to worry about finding a different summer job to pay for school

Christian Heilmann: Let’s make a simpler, more accessible web
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/christian-heilmann-lets-make-a-simpler-more-accessible-web/
Christian Heilmann: Let’s make a simpler, more accessible web
Christian Heilmann gave this talk at Typo3 Developer Days. I’m linking it up because it strikes an already stricken nerve in me. The increasing complexity of web development has an inverse relationship with the decreasing number of entry points for those getting into web development.
I love how Christian compares two hypothetical development stacks.
Then
index.html
Now
Get the right editor with all the right extensions
Set up your terminal with the right font and all the cool dotfiles
Install framework flügelhorn.js with bundler wolperdinger.io
Go to the terminal and run packagestuff –g install
Look at all the fun warning messages and update dependencies
Doesn’t work? Go SUDO, all the cool kids are …
Don’t bother with the size of the modules folder
Learn the abstraction windfarm.css – it does make you so much more effective
Use the templating language funsocks – it is much smaller than HTML
Check out the amazing hello world example an hour later…
He’s definitely a bit glib, but the point is solid. Things are more complex today than they were, say, ten years ago. I remember struggling with Grunt back then and thinking I’d never get it right. I did eventually, and my IDE was never the same after that.
It’s easy to get swept up in the complexity, even for those with experience in the field:
This world is unfortunately becoming lost or, at least, degraded — not because it is no longer possible to view the source of a webpage, but because that source is often inscrutable, even on simple webpages.
— Pixel Envy “A View Source Web”
Christian’s post reminds me that the essence of the web is not only still alive but getting better every day:
Browsers are constantly updated.
The web standardisation process is much faster than it used to be.
We don’t all need to build the next killer app. Many a framework promises scaling to infinity and only a few of us will ever need that.
He goes on to suggest many ways to remove complexity and abstractions from a project. My biggest takeaway is captured by a single headline:
The web is built on resilient technologies – we just don’t use them
Which recalls what Molly White said earlier this year that there’s always an opportunity to swing the pendulum back:
The thing is: none of this is gone. Nothing about the web has changed that prevents us from going back. If anything, it’s become a lot easier. We can return. Better, yet: we can restore the things we loved about the old web while incorporating the wonderful things that have emerged since, developing even better things as we go forward, and leaving behind some things from the early web days we all too often forget when we put on our rose-colored glasses.
We can return. We can restore all the things. So, tell me: do you take the red pill or the blue one?

I was numbly scrolling through job listings and happened across the kindest-sounding job page I've ever seen. Saying there was no requirements at all (besides being happy or something), that they'll walk you through everything and train you. And that they're happy to hire anyone, no matter how young or old, whether it's your first job or you want a little extra money on the side or you're retired and want something to do.
The feel of the wording was like, "Aww poor baby—here, have a blanket and a hot chocolate and I'll make everything better." While the job listings I usually see are like, "Working nights, weekends, and holidays are required. And if you don't know these five obscure things by heart and have eight years of experience, don't even bother applying."
And the place is close enough that I should be able to get there easily on rollerblades (if I can finally get use to the pair I bought awhile ago).
...But then I'd mentioned to my dad that I might apply for a job, and he reminded me that I hadn't wanted to be tied up during the day of the eclipse, and suggested I wait to see if it's still available after that.
...And then I checked my desk calendar and saw several other days I need to be free for scattered throughout the next two months.
...I'm beginning to think I'm just not cut out for working.
#asj just being silly#I forget if I'd posted about the time I applied for a barista job or if that was before joining tumblr.#The only thing I could think to put on the application was that I lived around the corner so I could come any time.#I assumed I wouldn't be called. So the belated call for an interview took me by complete surprise.#And I got there a few minutes early as is proper and was told to just sit at any table and wait.#And he was so late and I had no idea what he looked like and then someone walked in the front door and asked me if I was someone else#and I didn't know if that was him or someone on a blind date or what. But then he got my name right but I was already panicking by then#And he was yawning because the employee I'd talked to called him and woke him up. ...And I felt so inadequate talking to him.#I think the main reason I didn't get that job was because I was very noticeably nervous.#I couldn't bring myself to smile naturally or sound happy after sitting there so long. He'd mentioned that. And also my age.#...But it was also the only time I've ever gotten to the interview stage so it was a step in the right direction?#There was the time I applied for an easy sounding job at the library that had perfect hours.#Days after putting in the application the Coronavirus reached my area and the library tossed all applications & shut down (for some time).#There was the time I thought about applying for a nice job at a weather station. Nice hours. ...alright drive. & I'd had 2 related classes.#I took too long thinking about it & trying to make my short resume look desirable. The listing disappeared before I submitted it.#I don't think I've ever made it past looking at the listing page for any web developer job.#I keep telling myself I'll read up on new practices and learn all these languages I hadn't learned. But I always lose motivation quickly.#I wish I took the two electronics classes I'd thought about in college. I was afraid of being the only girl.#...And I've always been nervous around walls.#But there's always work for electricians! And I really like playing with resisters and building circuits. ...Only time I got to was in HS.#And if nothing else I could finish the job the electricians left half done at my house years ago. They wouldn't return any of my calls.

Before the War: My Life as a Programmer
Before the war, my life was filled with lines of code, problem-solving, and creative thinking. I was a programmer—building web and mobile apps, writing backend systems in C# and ASP.NET. My days were spent developing projects, learning new technologies, and growing in my career. It wasn’t always easy, but I loved what I did. My work gave me purpose, and my future felt full of possibility.
Now: Life in War
Now, my reality has drastically changed. I live under constant threat, in a war zone, with my family. The sound of explosions has replaced the hum of my computer. Each day is a struggle for survival, filled with fear, grief, and uncertainty.
I have lost loved ones—my cousins, my aunt, and her children. And I have lost my job, my sense of security, and the dreams I once had as a programmer. The war took away my work, but more than that, it has taken away the life I knew.
Hope for the Future
But despite it all, I hold on to hope. Hope that one day, I will return to the work I love. Hope that one day, my family and I can live in peace. Like anyone else in the world, we deserve to feel safe, to dream again, and to rebuild what was lost.
