i think david has the best scary stories. because he grew up in poland and has heard of like a hundred different slavic spirits and monsters and now he carries the legacy on because whenever he wants to persuade les by scaring him a little he says "eat the whole dinner or bebok will steal you" or "you can't go to the forest alone leszy will eat you" or "don't swim in the hudson river utopce will drown you and turn you into one of them." and also sometimes when he's at the lodging house for the night the littles just ask him for a scary story and he always provides (<- great narrator/storyteller david bonus)

After reading Denial Has Limits by my dear friend @clevereverest I really really wanted to draw Bumswiftery in this AU and well it took a while but here they are after the fight in the 4th chapter!

Hope I did capture Bumlets' and Swifty's magic well enough and that you enjoy it :)

Little details:

as Swifty is a Florist he has lots of flowers on his jacket of course

the nordic runes on Bumlets' sweater are actually all the first letters of his names: around his collar are 'D's (for Dominic) as well as around the hem 'B's (Bumlets) and on the lower hem I just did repeatedly D.A.G (for his full name Dominic Alejandro García)

Skittery's clothes are meaningless except his bracelet which has black, blue and green, for all three boys :3

Also Skittery has some scrapes from the fight that they couldn't heal but it will be okay

My embarrassing admission is that I've been seriously into Newsies and Les Mis at various points, but I still can't tell apart those swarms of hot young background guys that the fans go crazy about when I watch them. Hell I still don't know most of the barricade boys' names! There's Enjolras, Grantaire, and the Comb Ferret but beyond that I couldn't tell you.

Watched a clip of an interview with Ted "Wildcat" Grant, and he mentioned the he once "swam two miles with three bullets in his lung", and it hit me. Man was not just a professional boxer, but for years was the reigning *Heavyweight Champion of the World*. How'd he hide or explain away the inevitable physical result of spending every night fighting heavily armed gangsters, spies, saboteurs and supervillains with his bare hands, when he was routinely walking into a ring with no shirt on in front of huge crowds, getting inspected by refs and whatever you call the guys who take care of fighter's injuries, having his photo taken, etc.?

You just answered your own question. He was Heavyweight Champion of the World. He always came in at weight before the fight and he played it clean as a whistle in the ring. Were YOU gonna question him in front of the crowd, or where a sports reporter might hear you?

Beyond that, Ted Grant's personal life was (assumed to be) a known quantity. He was a roughneck from a harsh part of Gotham and he retained a strong sense of "street principles". Even out of his uniform he was often seen getting into fights with catcallers, deadbeats and anyone else who offended his sense of decency on the street. More than once he came upon a man striking his wife or child and beat said man into a hospital bed in broad daylight.

If you were the ref, or the reporters, any new scar or bruise that couldn't be explained as the price of his living COULD be explained away as Ted Grant being Ted Grant even away from the camera. I am going to list for you actual things Ted Grant did, in his civvies, during his period of active sportsmanship. Not one of these is a lie.

He got so offended at a beat cop shaking down newsies for protection money that he started a fight. He fought said cop, his partner and 4 other beat cops who joined in. And won.

He saw an off duty sailor, who had half a head of height on Grant, refuse to leave two women alone. He put the sailor's head through a table and scared off half a dozen other service men just by telling them who he was.

He crashed through the front window of a hotel lobby because he was trying to strangle a reporter who called him a "Nip Lover" for speaking out against Japanese internment.

AND, my personal favorite

He walked past a bar known to be a hang out for the local Klan chapter. Heard one of them on the bar's porch call him a "White Man's inspiration", walked directly up to the bar, split the oak door off its hinges with one punch and thrashed all 29 men inside walking away with only a black eye and bruises from his right shoulder to elbow where one of them broke a METAL BAR STOOL across it. He then made a habit of bringing black friends and ring staff to said bar, daring anyone to make a fight out of it (which they often did, to repeated results) until the bar shut down. Where he then used the pot from his next fight to buy the land and donate it to the NAACP. If you've ever been to the Grant Rec Center that does after school for the north end of The Narrows in Gotham, now you know why its called that.

No one questioned Grant showing up with a shiner and a crooked tooth, they just contented themselves with the knowledge the the other guy A. deserved it and B. got it worse.

It's been a hot minute since I've read newsies fanfics or any other fic for that matter but lately I've been thinking about a couple fics where Spot joins the US military which is beyond funny to me. Maybe Broadway Spot would do that but we all know the true Spot (Gabe Damon) would be a draft dodger 100%. He'd see a guy in military uniform and immediately start throwing things.

What was the cut Paper Mill Playhouse scene with Mrs Jacobs like?

well technically she was credited as “Mrs.Baum” not Mrs. Jacobs in the program which is weird but! basically she walked davey & les to work, corrected the way les spoke when he had more of a heavier accent which def showed that davey and les did come with a lot more of an education than the rest of the boys. it was also how the rest of the boys found out davey and les had parents. (still making comments about it, just in front of her)

shes also the one to point out the new newsie price!

ok but i think we really gloss over the fact that "spot conlon's turf" consists of the entirety of brooklyn.

according to the 1901 Census Bulletin, the population of NYC in 1900 was 3,437,202. of that, 1,166,582 were in brooklyn. assuming that the ratio of newsboys to the general population is consistent, thats just over a third of all the newsboys in the entirety of NYC that spot is in direct leadership over. that is a lot of power.

in comparison, jack is only the leader of lower manhattan. according to that same census, manhattan's population was greater than brooklyn's (1,850,093), but we know from the scene at jacobis that manhattan is divided into multiple newsie groups, including harlem, midtown, the bowery, and the east side at the very least. jack only had the authority to declare that "the newsies of lower manhattan [were] officially on strike", so his leadership clearly does not extend beyond lower manhattan.

now let's talk influence:

newsies from other areas didn't show up to the strike after jack asked them to. just talking manhattan groups, we know for a fact that midtown and harlem didn't show, and we can infer that the bowery and east side groups didn't either. jack is potentially well known among the other newsies, both for his leadership of lower manhattan and his escape from the refuge, but he has very little influence outside of lower manhattan.

whereas spot's influence? unmatched. he decided to show up to the rally, therefore the rest of the NYC newsies did too. also the implications of the midtown newsies (literally right next to lower manhattan so they definitely knew jack somewhat) not being willing to strike when it was jack who was asking, but being happy to follow spot? hilarious to me. this is even more hilarious if we assume that the bowery newsies didn't come either, since we know for a fact that jack goes there often, since that's where medda's theatre is. spot has more influence over manhattan than jack does.

so yeah. spot is in direct leadership over a third of the city's newsies, but the other two thirds? they follow his lead anyway.

conclusion spot is powerful af (and he knows it)

What is the KOSA newsies strike?

All across tumblr and similar platforms, kids like us have found their people. People who share the same difficulties, people who have gone through the same things, or just friends. I have found some amazing people on tumblr, and KOSA would take all of that away. KOSA would take away the support many LGBTQ community members have found, the support many people with mental illnesses have found, and so much more beyond that. We are striking to show KOSA that we deserve a voice too! Freedom of Speech!
