I'm re-reading it and that one fairy guy, Xanthos?? He is like the gayest character i've ever seen? like above Elder McKinley level zesty? Beyond every newsie combined??

tried to oppose the godlike powers of a turbulent river and got myself concussed. got dragged down stream & kept getting my ass obliterated by the current and the small stones along the river bed

THE MARES OF DIOMEDES.

The Mares of Diomedes were four horses, named Deinos (terrible), Lampon (shining), Podargos (swift), and Xanthos (yellow). They were known for their beauty and wild nature.

The horses were driven mad by unknown force. This caused them to eat human flesh. They were only appeased and were only manageable when fed on human meat this made them calm.

The Mares belonged to King Diomedes of Thrace, who kept them tethered with iron chains in a bronze manger in the town of Tirida. They were used to consume strangers who were put into the manger to feed the horses.

The Mares of Diomedes were one of the tasks assigned to Heracles by King Eurystheus as part of the Twelve Labours of Heracles. Heracles had to bring the horses back to Eurystheus, which he accomplished by feeding them their master, Diomedes, and then calming them.

The Mares symbolize the attraction for excessive asceticism that constrains the energies of life and must be reoriented. They represent the need to break free from constraints and find a balance between the natural and the unnatural.

Stories of the Mares of Diomedes appear in many other classical works, among them, those written by Euripides, Diodorus Siculus, and even Ovid, Statius, Lucan, and Seneca. These accounts provide detailed descriptions of the horses' appearance, behavior, and the nature of Heracles' difficult tasks in trying to catch them.

Idolatry ; a slightly old comic about AZ during his kingship, and his younger brother, Xanthos.

Transcript:

I wanted, more than anything, to be like you.

You were not powerful in the traditional sense. But you were determined. Intelligent. You always found a way to surpass your own limitations.

I watched our homeland grow prosperous, molded by your very hands. Your inventions alone unified Kalos towards a common goal.

What was I in comparison?

Smart, but not enough. Strong, but not enough. A leader, and yet I could not unify people in the same way you could.

I was merely… your little brother. Always in your shadow. Valued for strength, and little else.

It was tolerable when we were young. I could pretend you were weak, and by taking the role of your knight, I could experience, if only briefly, how it felt to be god-like.

By the time you ascended to the throne, you no longer needed me to protect you;

Any value I could offer you was long lost.

And now for more info :~) I posted this to my main account, but... I don't have any new art for new years. So I'm just going to be reposting some of the comics I've made that never made it over here which primarily focus on AZ and Xanthos, my younger brother oc for him.

This one is of course about the ways in which Xanthos idolizes his brother to the point of feeling inadequate in all aspects of life. Xanthos suffers from an intense feeling of guilt due to an event that happened in their past, and that guilt has led to him having Very low self esteem. He thinks himself useless, and only capable of hurting others. His feelings of self hatred later become an outward hatred aimed at his brother who he saw as a nearly saint-like figure; if he cannot be Good, and he cannot be Loved, then he'll just stop trying and become the horrible person he knows he is deep down.

.... If only we could tell Xanthos that the version of AZ that exists in his head, and the version of AZ that exists in reality, were in fact two very, VERY different people. 💔
