THE MARES OF DIOMEDES.
The Mares of Diomedes were four horses, named Deinos (terrible), Lampon (shining), Podargos (swift), and Xanthos (yellow). They were known for their beauty and wild nature.
The horses were driven mad by unknown force. This caused them to eat human flesh. They were only appeased and were only manageable when fed on human meat this made them calm.
The Mares belonged to King Diomedes of Thrace, who kept them tethered with iron chains in a bronze manger in the town of Tirida. They were used to consume strangers who were put into the manger to feed the horses.
The Mares of Diomedes were one of the tasks assigned to Heracles by King Eurystheus as part of the Twelve Labours of Heracles. Heracles had to bring the horses back to Eurystheus, which he accomplished by feeding them their master, Diomedes, and then calming them.
The Mares symbolize the attraction for excessive asceticism that constrains the energies of life and must be reoriented. They represent the need to break free from constraints and find a balance between the natural and the unnatural.
Stories of the Mares of Diomedes appear in many other classical works, among them, those written by Euripides, Diodorus Siculus, and even Ovid, Statius, Lucan, and Seneca. These accounts provide detailed descriptions of the horses' appearance, behavior, and the nature of Heracles' difficult tasks in trying to catch them.

Xanthos aka AZ's little brother aka Lysandre's ancestor aka the guy who tried to throw a coup d'etat in Ancient Kalos but failed which ended up leading to war. Sad! I wanted to try doing "official" art for him even tho I'm not that good at imitating official art... Tho I think I did a decent job here 😭
Some extra info under the cut (tw for mentions of a sui/cide attempt and drowning)
Xanthos' team... I wanted his team to be similar to AZ in that it's all "ancient" Pokemon, so he has an aegislash (very old possessed sword), a relicanth (a pokemon once thought extinct!) and a shiny Golurk... AZ created the golett that later evolved into this Golurk. Btw.
After the war was ended, AZ entrusted Xanthos to restoring Kalos... (I say entrusted because that's the word AZ used too, but it was more like "Xan wasn't given any other choice" 😭 I like AZ being a sympathetic character who still did some objectively cruel things if that wasn't obvious). And so, Xanthos became king... It would've been exciting for him to get what he had wanted all along, but Kalos was completely ravaged. He did what he could to help restore Kalos, but... It wasn't enough. Kalos' enters a dark age during this period, and doesn't see stability again for many, Many years.
AZ during this time period was in Hoenn. To be blunt he had attempted to drown himself, not realizing he was immortal And undying at that point. He spends a very lengthy amount of time at sea before eventually washing up on the shores of Hoenn 😱 he ends up forming a life for himself over there as a wood cutter... This is where he picks up his torkoal, too.
Xanthos had three sons of his own at some point. The oldest son is the one whose lineage continues into Lysandre. The second son is whose lineage established Parfum Palace later on. And the youngest son had a lineage that immigrated to Paldea at some point. In modern times, Lucerne, a descendant of the youngest son, was adopted by the late owners of Parfum Palace.

Castor and Pollux designs + also Xanthos because of course I want to draw one of the four immortal horses they were gifted (who can also apparently talk... I learnt that after finishing this piece which makes it way funnier to me now)
#dioscuri#castor and pollux#castor#polydeuces#helen of sparta#xanthos#greek mythology#greek myth art#in theory the mole constellation thing should be an easy fix. but im too attached to the designs now 🥺#also it makes more sense in my mind for pollux the boxing guy to have more scars on his face and neck okay. I just like it like this.#who thought it was a good idea to give these two multiple immortal horses btw. I love it but it's also feels like a recipe for chaos.#these are the guys who gallop over dinner tables indoors with their horses (actually true look it up)#in all fairness I know in my heart those horses are getting absolutely spoiled and doted on so it's all good <3#I should make designs for the other three tbh#my art#capri_art

Yellow Varieties
Welcome to this the sixth entry in Cool Colours. Yellow is wonderful and represents rather a unique case in this series' exploration. To look at the word at first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking that our word yellow has no links to Latin whatsoever. You would be both right and wrong, however. There is a link and a rather neat and unusual one. The word yellow is more closely connected to German 'gelb'. But it doesn't look like that either, you say. So, here is a brief glimpse at this lovely colour name's history. It stems primarily from the early German word 'gelwaz', to which the Italian 'giallo' is also related. Both stem ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European (henceforth PIE) word 'ghel-' which meant 'to shine'. Now PIE, is now widely believed to have been an early, now extinct language, from which most European languages and Sanskrit were all born. Now, here comes the Latin link. Latin is also descended from PIE and its word for pale yellow, helvus, comes from the same parent stem as German 'gelb'. So, it is linked to the word, it is just a relative that evolved slightly differently. Also, if you read the Latin helvus, pronouncing the 'v' as a 'w' (as many argue it should be) the connection with our 'yellow' becomes clearer.
Our trip through the colour yellow does not stop there. I have three further Classical terms for yellow for you that bequeathed us words in English. Let us start with Latin.
Have you ever read that you should get more of the vitamin Riboflavin (B2) in your diet? Well, the 'flavin' part of the word comes from the Latin flavus, meaning 'yellow', often a golden or reddish shade of yellow. 'What's a vitamin got to do with 'yellow'?' ,you ask. Well, the flavins are a group of organic compounds, from which Riboflavin is derived, and their colour is, you've got it, YELLOW. They are very important to life. So green might be life, but it appears yellow is, too.
Could your hair be described as 'fulvous'? No, it does not mean it is voluminous (full-vous, get it? Never mind). Again, this rather old-fashioned and probably forgotten word comes from another Latin word for 'yellow', this time fulvus, which denotes a brownish, tawny yellow. It was often used to describe lions.
Lastly, can I ask you if your daffodils betray a xanthic hue? So, we head over to the ancient Greeks for our penultimate yellow word of today. The Greek word ξανθος (xanthos) could denote hair that was blonde or even auburn, so again it can denote a reddish gold.
Crocus is our final shade today. Now, we see crocuses that are pink, blue, and yellow, but Greek word (κροκος) originally referred to the saffron plant, which yields a famous rich yellow colouring. There is even rather a sweet instance of it being used in a Greek text to describe the colour of egg-yolks.
The bright, cheerful colour yellow therefore, not only has a great etymological (i.e. word family) history, but it also has many different variations in Classical terms. EGG-sellent! Okay, there's a reason I'm a classicist not a comedian. I hope you enjoyed this instalment. See you on the next one.

no you don’t understand my life is characters that don’t like / hate each other but also have an uber unexplainable complex relationship. like one built out of a mutual respect. did Diomedes stab Xanthos last Tuesday because they were pissing hjm off. yeaha. But did he also only do it on giving them a chance to fight back. Yeaha. Do they love sparring together. Yes. Does he say things like “nice work, Trojan.” And Xanthos grins, “thanks, horse boy.” And whenever they’re in a boring meeting together they always look at each other and try to make the other laugh behind Agamemnon’s back. Yess.
Same w xanth and Antinous. Obviously. Xanthos can’t like Antinous. Even talking to the suitors pretty much goes against their oath to protect the kingdom (which, granted, they are.. very loose at following anyway). But when they see Antinous and realize. Omg. That’s the guy I was too scared to kiss 20 years ago and have been harboring guilt about it for the last two decades and he’s been in the palace for a year but hasn’t even looked my way. And Antinous is like. Holy shit is that Xanthos well I have to keep my cool around the other suitors but he looks so guilty what do I do. And it’s both like. How did the guy I know turn into… Him. Because last Antinous knew Xanthos could barely pick up a sword and now he’s hearing from Penelope and the others that this dude fought in a war for ten years on both sides. What.
