Oceanids are the children of Oceanus.

All nereids are nymphs, but not all nymphs are nereids. The difference isn’t just, “water nymph”. Nereids are the children of Oceanids.

(Naiads are basically the same except fresh water. Naiads are the daughters of the Potamoi, who are children of Oceanus :D)

Penelope is a nereid. Amphitrite’s grandfather is Oceanus, so she’s also a nereid. Penelope and Amphitrite are cousins.

I was high on tea and I had an idea

What if Penelope inherted Nereid blood and poison? And Telemachus was lucky enough to steal a few genes?

Like imagine supersonic speed swimmer Penelope "half Nereid" Of Sparta/Ithaca teaching baby Telemachus how to swim. Both being exceptional at it?

Imagine young Penelope of Sparta, seeing a man even try to touch her cousin Helen innapropriately. And biting down. Purple poison slowly dripping out. Killing the man in seconds

Imagine Penelope with Nereid ears, claws, and scales. Telemachus inheriting similar things. Both bonding over how to clean them up.

Imagine Penelope warning Telemachus. "No matter what, do not bite or claw." Because she knows the effects of the poison.

Imagine in Odysseus, Telemachus gets his spear kicked out of his arms and he starts clawing and biting the suitors. The purple poison oozing out of the sharpness and killing the suitors.

Imagine in Odysseus, Penelope with all minds on survival, goes riot and beats the shit out of a bunch of suitors. Her Nereid ears rattling. And poison swallowing the suitors whole.

I think another reason why Andromeda is constantly sidelined and erased in favor of Medusa is bc her story goes against the “men are causing all women’s problems” and “girls support girls” narrative that retellings try to push bc Andromeda mainly suffers at the hands of women, the nereids. I think I’ve even seen ppl blame the nereids cruelty on patriarchy which lol as if they weren’t the ones to approach Poseidon on their own accord to punish Cassiopeia and Andromeda. Ig it’s too hard to imagine women being cruel to each other on their own rather than have men push them into doing it.

Tbf Andromeda is victimized by patriarchy (like all women back then) by being put in an arranged marriage with her uncle, but bc she’s rescued by Perseus, a man, rather than slay queen girlboss her way out of it then that just cancels it out I suppose.

So I ended up falling for Polyphemus in Hades 2. (He sounds just like Ignarius! I have a type, OK!!)

I did a Greek myth deep dive and found some interesting facts about him, like how he has a crush on a sea nymph named Galatea. And I thought, wouldn't it be a funny idea if they were actually secretly dating.

But THEN I found there's some versions where they DO get together and that just added even more fuel on the shipping fire.

I've already been working on a oneshot fic of these two and it'sa gonna be a spicy one~
