some more general spitballing for the pirate zuko au:
once katara gets over her rough start with him, she's actually glad to have another waterbender around. kou's status as Most Experienced Waterbender in the group is a temporary one, but he enjoys it while he can.
local pirate still steals things on the regular. it's just a habit at this point.
kou picked his new name by using the last half of his old one, because he's not very creative when put on the spot. it's a total coincidence that it sounds like koh, but he feels like it's vaguely appropriate, given that he's already had half of his face stolen from him.
traveling via appa has him missing the ocean.
neither aang, nor katara or sokka think to tell toph that kou is fire nation. they think it's obvious- but of course, toph is blind, so she just assumes that since he's a waterbender, he's water tribe. it's kou who has to clear up this misunderstanding.
they forge a tight bond. former rich kids who were forbidden to learn their element and who embraced a less than legal lifestyle in secret? hell yeah. they've got one eye between them and they're ready to be absolute menaces.
aang has to step in so many time because people keep trying to arrest kou. his reputation as a pirate proceeds him.
sokka, as they're being attacked by the sea serpent at serpent's pass: i know! kou should try talking to him. they're kin, right?
kou: NO?????
(toph's nickname for him is, inevitably, sea serpent.)
the gaang just learns to accept that roughly 80% of kou's proposed plans involve illegal activity. you can take the pirate off of his ship, but you can't take the pirate out of the boy.
if you think kou isn't still incorporating breakdancing into his waterbending well. you'd be wrong. pretty sure it drives pakku nuts whenever he does it. that is NOT even remotely a proper waterbending form, young man.
kou: and yet. it works.
zuko's status as a waterbender was likewise hidden from mai and ty lee. when it comes out in the open, they have plenty of questions for azula. she just shrugs and says that her brother is a freak of nature.
learning that his great-grandfather was avatar roku finally clicks things into place for kou. that's why he's a waterbender.
imagine everyone's surprise when the person who gets arrested in chin village is aang, not kou.
local pirate still carries two water skins to go with his dual dao. just absolutely dedicated to the art of dual-wielding. at least it means they have a little more water on them when they're traveling through the desert.
kou meeting the swampbenders and realizing that there are other waterbenders out there who aren't water tribe.
whenever kou brushes off his high society skills, it always throws everyone for a loop. like. oh yeah. you were a prince at one point, weren't you?
it is a beautiful day in ba sing se, and you are a horrible pirate.
the dai li hate him! local pirate infiltrates their base and sets the avatar's sky bison free and departs with plenty of physical proof of their underhanded activities. thanks for keeping meticulous records long feng!
the gaang is jut like. we left you alone for FIVE MINUTES.
the gaang arrives in the fire nation and immediately sets to work spreading rumors that a.) prince zuko is alive and b.) was born a waterbender.
kou's just offended toph started the scams without him. hello? you didn't think to ask the pirate to do scams with you?
kou has zero talent for healing. he has no idea why it's so looked down on and dismissed as 'women's work' when it's actually incredibly difficult to learn.
(hama touches kou's cheek and says it's such a shame. he could have been such a handsome young man. kou is keenly aware she's touching the right half of his face.)
the day of black sun like. your prince has returned. he's a waterbender now. the solar eclipse has taken away your bending, but it hasn't taken away his.
(he still gets to confront his father. he winds up having to dodge his lightning because he can't redirect it.)
he and katara tag team that final fight against azula. kou picks the palace courtyard on purpose. there's water that runs underneath it. it's the perfect place to fight a souped up firebender.

the thing about zuko becoming firelord at the end of the show is that it's not like. a flaw of the writing that an inexperienced teenager takes on political leadership. it's important symbolically both in universe and to the show that zuko is the one to lead his country into its decolonial peaceful future bc he is the member of his family who broke the cycle and took a moral stance about the war. iroh is older and experienced, yes, and we know his moral stance on the war, but there's a lot of baggage there, what with the siege of ba sing se and being the brother of the old fire lord. it doesn't convey that same sense of hope for the future and change, either to the viewer or the in-universe fire nation. zuko's kinda politically perfect - he's still part of the ruling family so it's not perceived as foreign usurpation, but he's young and his banishment and rebelliousness make it believable that he'll actually make change in the nation. and since this is a kids show where these kids are the ones who will save the world when the adults failed it feels very full-circle to have him assume that role. will it be tough on him? you betcha! is that a valid topic to explore in post-canon fic? absolutely! was this the right choice, both in-universe and from a narrative perspective? also very much yes

I just wanted to share some thoughts and have a pleasant conversation about Fire Lady Katara.
I am a zutara shipper but my idea of them is more like they get together in their 20s and have the most passionate romance and then break up because of their duties (Katara goes back to the South pole becomes chief/ Zuko stays as fire lord in the Fire Nation). Then, when old, they both step down and get back together and maybe brew some tea at iroh's old tea shop in Ba Sing Se until they die at the same time peacefully or something like this. So, obviously, Fire Lady Katara isn't my favourite trope, but I am not necessarily against it. It's cute.
Still, I always see people being so violently against that trope and even going as far as calling it racist and reductive and I didn't really get where they got these ideas from until I saw the reasonings.
The main one is "the fire nation killed her people". And, fair enough, I see where people are coming from with that but, at the same time, this is very surface level criticism and above all she would never be the Fire Lady to that Fire Nation but to a reformed one anyway. Zuko worked hard his entire life to decolonise and right the wrongs of the Fire Nation. History should never be forgotten, of course, but it also should not shape how one feels about a place forever. Places, countries, are always changing, developing and evolving. People having their mindset on Fire Nation = wrong is just .... A flawed way of understanding the show/ season 3 imo. Especially when the fire nation changed drastically under Zuko's reign. So Katara would never have to be the queen of a racist and genocidal regime because the fn left all that behind. She would be the fl of a fire nation working on moving past that and improving themselves. And the main perpetrator of all the reforms pushing these changes forward would be her husband. Therefore I genuinely can't see how this came to mind to some people it's not like she's marrying ozai during the war.
I've also seen people say that it is not a real role and Katara would end up with no political influence and just being a pretty girl in Zuko's arms and to this I have to say...Do you understand Katara as a character ? She could be a cabbage marchant and start a revolution in two days! I mean even if the court wanted her to shut up and be Zuko's pretty doll.. she never would !? And nobody would be able to stop her!!! She would probably invite herself to meetings, have Zuko vouch for her anytime she spoke and have the time of her life insulting old men, debating with them and countering their stupid ideas with the tact she always had. She actually would be perfect at this and probably would be promoted to Fire Lord within two weeks of being Fire Lady let's be real.
I hope this made sense haha. If you see this tell me what you think! Let's have a civilised conversation.

What are some Zutara fanfics you like?
thank you for asking anon! rubbing my hands together and laughing diabolically rn. most of these fics are completed, but i have a few incomplete or ongoing ones listed at the bottom.
The Color of the Stars by bluenebulae this is my zutara bible... i have read this 3 times, and i think it's still my favorite zutara fic. it diverges from canon during the day of black sun. katara and zuko are both captured and thrown into prison and after breaking out together, they become reluctant allies and travel the world in search of the gaang while also trying to warn the other nations about ozai's plans.
they call you refugee by akaiiko
an arranged marriage alternate universe where when zuko is banished, he leaves the fire nation with—actually, the summary does a pretty good job of explaining it: "Zuko goes into exile with a scar, a mission, and a wife." i think i cried the first time i read this.
refraction by caroes3725
this one's my post-war zutara bible. it is maybe the post-war swt ambassador/politician katara slow burn of all time. it is 200k+ words and it's all worth it, i promise! i prommy!!! read it now!!!! <- this along with The Color of the Stars are maybe my favorite zutara longfics. period.
Mending Wounds by FictionIsSocialInquiry
canon divergent fic where katara sees visions of zuko in the foggy swamp. except in these visions he is older, the fire lord, her husband, and he is gentle and loving, and katara feels sick to her stomach! one of my favs!!!!
lost and found by Smediterranea
hakoda discovers a young zuko, injured, and takes him in. beautiful alternate universe fic where zuko grows up in the southern water tribe with sokka and katara.
The Things We Hide by Lykegenia
katara is held in the fire nation as a political prisoner following the southern water tribe's defeat after an assault launched by fire lord ozai during sozin's comet. the swt, however, will not go down with a fight. love, love, love this one! it has painted lady katara, blue spirit zuko, a sweet romance, political intrigue, and betrayal!!! it's a fun time. also i love hama's inclusion in this :)
The Blackfish and the Dragon by ama
during the day of black sun, iroh takes matters into his own hands and becomes fire lord. shortly after, a marriage is arranged between zuko and katara in order to secure the peace. it's a beautiful arranged marriage au where everyone is so perfectly in character. i really think this fic is one of the best zutara fics out there with a natural and rewarding slow burn romance. and azula is there and she's perfect.
Smoke & Mirrors by sansonnets
blutara bible!!!!!!! that's all i got... blutara go CRAZYYY
so i can die where i met you by irridescence
canon compliant. zuko and katara, eighty years later. the fic is centered around major character death(s), so don't read if you can't handle it but i was sobbing like a fucking baby by the end of it. such a beautiful gorgeous fic that will haunt me forever.
if you don't mind incomplete or ongoing fics:
But Who's Counting? by halfhoursonearth
katara thinks zuko's going to need at least 100 healing sessions after the agni kai. lovely prose and characterization and it's so tender and sweet. just read it!!!
so let us melt, and make no noise by LittleLostStar
zuko is sent on a mission to bring back the heart of the last waterbender so he can restore his honor and return home. but when he nearly dies while in the south pole, a healer named katara saves him and nurses him back to health. (the author describes this as a kinda-sorta frozen AU, and i think it's a pretty good description haha). it's an incredible AU with so much mystery and intrigue and tension!
forgetting is a kind of mercy by nerdylizj
"Five years after Katara and Zuko go missing in Ba Sing Se, Kya and Lee are found living peacefully in the Earth Kingdom countryside." finally, i gotta plug liz's silly n goofy dai li brainwashing fic. it's so good. so painfully angsty. it's about the pain of remembering and about making hard choices and identity and parenthood!!!

Tumblr media
Working at the tea shop was Orora's first time at a job. She was just as green to it as Zuko was. However, she did not voice her disgust at the notion every few seconds. She was eager to learn, and ready to earn her living. As much as she appreciated the money Iroh had given her, she wanted to contribute to their financial situation as well.
The first day had been busy. There had been the different types of teas she had to learn to brew, other then the ones she already knew thanks to her Master. Then there were dishes to wash almost constantly. Not a lot of customers had come in that day, Pao having closed the shop early to allow his new employees to get to know their work place, so it hadn't been as tiring as she had thought it would be.
What Orora found she liked to do, was wash the dishes. She got to play with water and bubbles, and it helped calm her. Strange, she knew, but after so many days of being on the run, doing something as simple as washing dishes was oddly calming. Not to mention the job allowed her mind to roam and ponder over things she had not allowed herself to for quite some time now.
As she set aside one of the more expensive looking cups, the young waterbender sighed softly through her nose.
So far the truce she had offered Zuko seemed to be working. Though it had only been a few hours since it had been put into effect. And they'd only managed to snap at each other twice. True after the second time Iroh had seen the wisdom in separating them by giving them jobs to do at different ends of the shop. Zuko worked the front, taking orders and such, while Orora washed the dishes in the back.
Picking up a plate and dunking it in the soapy water, Orora continued to let her thoughts wander and ask the questions she wished she could say out loud.
Such as why were Zuko and Iroh fugitives of the Fire Nation? They were royalty, surely the Fire Lord would want his brother and son back. And did Zuko's sister truly want to kill her own Uncle? That thought sent a shiver down her spine. But what about their mother? Didn't she have a say in all of this? Was she treated just like Orora's mother was treated?
She had so many questions, and more, and all she wanted to do was march right up to Zuko and demand that he answer them.
But something held her back.
Maybe because she was a polite person who didn't go about poking her nose in other people's business.
Or perhaps, more likely, she had no desire to cause Zuko any pain by talking about his past. It was surely a sore subject, from the bits and pieces of information she had collected over the months. Besides, he already had his hands full trying to adjust to living in Ba Sing Se. Orora just wished he would figure himself out faster so she could ask all her questions.
Oh, she could ask Iroh if she wanted to, and her would probably answer, but for some insane reason, she wanted the answers to come from Zuko himself.
Spirit help her but she felt it was the right thing since it was his story.
Memories of every encounter she had ever had with the young prince rose unbidden, yet not unwelcome in her mind, as she started to play with the water not having any more dishes to wash.
It was strange, how someone she had not even known a few months ago was now at the very center of her life. He wasn't all that she thought about, really this was the first time she was allowing herself to think of him to such an extent. Usually she had other things to think about. Such as surviving, learning from her Master, perfecting her water bending techniques, inventing new ways to incorporate ice into her fighting, improving on her combat skills, restocking her medicinal herbs, making sure she didn't loose touch with her healing side, because as much as she liked to put her waterbending skills to use by fighting, she knew healing was a major part of who she was.
All those thoughts were pushed to the back of her mind, as she focused on a pair of golden eyes that seemed to watch her wherever she went, watching her every step. At first she had thought, it was perhaps because he didn't trust her. But slowly, that mistrust in his eyes had faded. Now, when she would catch him looking at her, he would look away.
Then again, who was she to complain. She looked at him and had been caught looking at him by him on multiple occasion.
Her fingers continued to twirl, her gaze listless as she created pretty patterns in the water.
She thought of the night when they had first met, officially at least. When he had tried to rob her. She could still recall every detail with a clarity that surprised even her.
She contemplated on their little sparring session and the conversation after it, how she had encouraged him to find something to live for, to fight for.
She recalled how shocked she had been when she realized his true identity. A prince. An honest to goodness prince. One who couldn't stand her, and who she couldn't stand either.
At least, she thought that was the case.
Her mind conjured the moment where she had first touched his scar. How vulnerable he had looked, and yet he had trusted her enough to not push her away. The way he had protected her when they were at the Oasis. The conversation they had shared while bathing. That one brought a fierce blush to her cheeks. And despite her best effort to move on to the next one, she found the blush only intensifying as she remembered the moment they had shared on the mountain.
Where they had acknowledged that they were soulmates. Where he had gripped her wrist, so desperately and yet so soft. Where she had wandered how his lips would feel against her own. And she was sure he had been thinking the same.
After all, hadn't he leaned forward slightly before the elements of nature had tread on their moment?
So lost in her thoughts, that she didn't even sense as someone else entered her work area and stood next to her. Watching her.
"Uncle says its time to go now."
The voice jolted her out of her thoughts, scaring her so much that she jumped where she stood. Her bending reacted out of instinct, mirroring her startled emotion as her hand shot a splash of water on the figure standing next to her.
"Spirits! You startled me!" She panted, resting a hand above her heart. Zuko glowered at her in return, water dripping from his hair and onto his shoulders. The girl winced, pursing her lips to hide a smile, though it still escaped. She couldn't help it, he just looked utterly ridiculous.
At his warning growl, she couldn't help but giggle. A strange sound since it hardly ever came from her. "Sorry, here." Quickly bending the water, she threw it back into the sink and gave him an apologetic smile. His glare did not let up.
"We're done here for the day. Lets go." He grumbled, before making for the door. She rolled her eyes. Clearly he wasn't too pleased with her little reaction. As he stomped off, she called after him, removing her apron as she went. "I said I was sorry!"
                                          ————————–
Their new home was a small apartment, just big enough for the three of them. As soon as they returned, Orora quickly settled in the middle of the room, wanting to get in an hour of meditation before bed. She crossed her legs, closed her eyes, folded her hands in her lap and evened out her breathing.
Which left Iroh to brew some more tea for them, and for Zuko to lay on the sofa, hands tucked behind his head as he stared up at the ceiling, his mind going over the day's event.
A job. For once in his life, he was actually working for a living. The notion had seemed strange at first, not to mention he had felt that it was beneath him, but what Orora had said was true. They did need jobs if they were to survive in this city.
Reluctantly, his gaze flickered to the water tribe girl as she sat meditating peacefully, oblivious to the effect she had had on him.
Him. Prince of the Fire Nation. Being effected by the words of a commoner.
Or rather, he was being effected by the words of a girl who was his soulmate.
Letting out a silent groan, his hand came up to press the back of his hand against his eyes, as if to physically stop him from staring too long at her. It was starting to get pathetic, just how much he would want her opinion on things.
He wouldn't go so far as to say he wanted her to approve of him, but it was pleasant to have someone else beside his Uncle give him a little wisdom. He spoke of life in riddles and words that were heavy with emotion.
Orora?
She would give it straight to his face. No regard of his feelings, his stand on whatever topic it was. She would just come out and say it.
And he appreciated her for that.
True he never always liked what she said, but sometimes they were the exact words he needed to hear.
Like the talk they had had after their impromptu battle near that lake. He still hadn't found something to live for, or to fight for, but at least he knew that he was looking for something.
Not to mention the fact that he would be ever grateful to her for saving Uncle's life. He would never say it outright, but in that moment he had been so so scared and she had stepped up and healed Iroh. Even after getting to know who they were and the lies she had been led to believe for so long.
And how she had probably saved him that stormy night on the mountain. A moment of weakness on his part, letting his emotions get the best of him, but she'd been there. She'd been where he needed her to be, and had not held back when telling him off for being so reckless.
He had to stop his thoughts there, not wanting to dwell too much on what would've happened if that moment in the rain had gone on any longer.
And then there was the truce. To live together somewhat harmoniously.
Lifting his hand, he looked at her again, watching her face. She looked so calm in that moment, as opposed to the plethora of emotions that always played about her features. Zuko found he was beginning to think of it as a game. A game where he would try to guess what she would feel next, and whether it would effect him in some way.
So far, almost every emotion she felt was directed at him, and though he would never ever admit it out loud, he kind of liked having her attention be on him rather then anything else.
Huffing to himself, as if disgusted with his own thoughts, he rose to his feet, moving to the pantry to see what he could have for dinner.
                                          ————————–
"Orora, my dear." Glancing up from where she had been counting the money of the customer who had just paid, the young waterbender gave Iroh a nod. "Yes Master?"
"We seem to have run out of Jasmine. I have asked Pao and he says to take some money from the till and buy some Jasmine tea from the shop just down the street."
Taking the money, Orora quickly nodded, before rushing to the back of the shop where Zuko was on dish washing duty. Seeing her taking off her apron, he frowned. "Where're you going?"
Straightening her clothes, the girl replied. "Ran out of Jasmine, just going to buy some." She had barely made it to the door when Zuko called out. "Wait, I'm supposed to go with you when you go out into the city."
Orora glanced over her shoulder, rolling her eyes slightly. "Relax Your Highness. Its only a five minute walk, nothing is going to happen to me." She opened the door, moving to step outside, but then she paused.
"Although, it is sweet of you to worry about me." She glanced over at him, a smile on her lips as she caught sight of the obvious flush on his cheeks as he looked at anything but her. "I'll be back soon." She said as a way of promise, before she was out of the tea shop.
It was a five minute walk, and once the goods were secured, the girl began to make her way back to the shop, her heart still warm at the prospect of Zuko actually worrying about her.
Her happy thoughts, however, were interrupted rather rudely when a hard hand grabbed her shoulder, yanking her into a dark alley, covering her mouth with a rough hand.
The instant she felt the unfamiliar hands, she began to struggle and push with all her strength, trying to get away.
"Stop moving!" A voice hissed, a very familiar voice.
Her eyes focused in the dark, and she was able to make out the face of the boy they had met on the way to Ba Sing Se.
The Freedom Fighter, Jet.
Her pale blue eyes narrowed, and a look akin to a cold anger burned in the gaze she fixed him with. "Look I just want to talk, that's all." He said, still not letting up from where he had his hand on her mouth.
She continued to glare at him, even after he had removed his hand, though his other kept an almost painful grip on her wrist. "I'm trying to help you. You're a waterbender, there's no way you would be with those firebenders of your own free will, so they must be keeping you prisoner somehow."
He knows, a voice hissed in her mind, prompting her heart to beat faster in her chest, and an ugly feeling of fear to coil in her stomach. But she didn't let it show.
Instead, she remained the epitome of disgust and anger. "What in the world are you talking about?"
There seemed to be an almost manic look in his eyes, accompanied by impatience, as he dropped her hand, and grabbed her shoulders. "You don't have to lie for them. I'm trying to help you. I just need evidence and then we can end those two firebenders."
End?! Spirits! He wanted to kill Iroh and Zuko.
Shrugging out of his grasp, Orora stepped away, fingers pulling the cork of her water satchel in case she needed to defend herself. "You're out of your mind." She growled at him. Despite the terror she felt at hearing his statement, her instinct to protect her two companions was far potent, which was the reason she was even able to face the boy with murder in his eyes.
"Just admit the truth! They're firebenders! And they deserve to die." He was starting to get frustrated with her. "I don't care what you say, I will find some way to expose them, and when I do, I'll have the pleasure of executing them."
Hearing those words, hearing the tone in his voice, the sheer hatred and anger in his eyes. Something in her snapped.
With a fierce cry she threw her arm out, the movement elegant yet deadly, given that Jet found himself staring at the very sharp ends of multiple icicles that she pointed in his direction.
"This is your first and last warning." She hissed, her voice full of warning. "If you come near them, if you so much as harm a single hair on their head, I will personally see to it that you pay for it." She fixed him with a cold stare. "In blood."
So saying, she turned her back to him, leaving him trapped behind her icicles. They would melt soon enough, though the words Jet called after her as she walked away, echoed in her ears all the way back to the tea shop.
"You would threaten someone who's on your side. You're willing to protect the enemy?! You're a traitor to your own people. A disgrace! You're just like them! A killer!"
                                          ————————–
As soon as she reached the back door of the tea shop, Orora leaned up against the wooden door. Her heart was beating so fast, she was afraid it would somehow burst out of her chest. A stinging sensation behind her eyes told her she was close to tears. Lifting a trembling hand, she pressed it to face, willing herself to calm down.
She had to warn Zuko and Iroh, make sure they were on guard. She couldn't let anything happen to them. They were her friends. She cared about them. Both of them.
Somehow, she managed to calm herself down, slightly, and entered the shop. It had taken her a good fifteen minute to calm down. Grabbing her apron, she tied it behind her in a haphazard manner before rushing out to the front of the shop.
There was Iroh, pouring tea for a customer, with Zuko picking up cups left behind by a previous customer. She all but stumbled forward, catching Zuko's hand, prompting him to look at her, confused and slightly alarmed at her obvious panicked state.
"Orora? Wha-"
But she didn't let him finish. "He knows." She whispered, aware of the other customers around her. "Jet knows." The words were spoken so softly that no one else could ever hear them, and yet Zuko did. Loud and clear.
However, before either of them could talk further on what she had revealed, the door of the shop slammed open and Jet himself walked in. A strangled gasp left her lips, as she caught sight of that murderous look in his eyes once more.
"I'm tired of waiting!" He pointed an accusing finger at both Iroh and Zuko. "These two men are firebenders! And that girl is helping them. She's a traitor!"
Immediately, Zuko pushed Orora behind him, gripping one of her hands to make sure she stayed there. Uncle and nephew exchanged a look which seemed to mirror what the other was thinking.
Play dumb.
"I know they're firebenders, I saw the old man heating his tea!" Jet continued, advancing towards the trio with his hooked swords out of their sheaths. "He works in a tea shop." A nearby customer stated in a rather confused voice, but Jet wasn't having it. "He's a firebender! I'm telling you!"
The same customer stood. "Drop your swords, boy. Nice and easy." Jet ignored him, his gaze never leaving Zuko's as he began to advance towards him and Orora. "You'll have to defend yourself. Then everyone will know. Go ahead, show them what you can do." His gaze flickered to Orora who, previous fear forgotten to be replaced by a burning anger, glared back at him. "Or would you rather have your girlfriend get hurt defending you."
She felt his grip on her hand tighten to an almost painful level. "Zuko, no! He's goading you!" She whispered, even as the previous customer moved to step forward, ready to unsheathe his sword. Zuko simply glanced at her. Her heart dropped to her stomach. She knew exactly what he was about to do.
And sure enough he stepped forward and grabbed the swords the customer had been about to withdraw. "You want a show?" He growled. "I'll give you a show!'
He pulled a table in front of him with his foot and kicked it at Jet, who was quick to slice the table with his swords and jumped over it. As he landed, he swung both hook swords at the Fire Nation prince, who deflected the attack and jumped backward onto another table. Which was again sliced in half by Jet, with a mighty swing of one sword through the middle of the table.
Somehow Zuko managed to balance on one half of the table, on one foot! Jet was unrelenting as he continued his frenzied attack by cutting the legs off the table. Zuko was quick on his feet as he jumped up. As he landed, he swung both broadswords at Jet's feet, but he somersaulted away and landed in a crouching position before charging forward. Zuko swung both of his swords at Jet.
Both weapons clashed as both fighters tried to best the other, glaring at each other as they did.
"Enough!"
Orora's scream cut through the air as she used her waterbending to push the two fighters apart. She moved to stand in front of Zuko, multiple ice knives nestled between her fingers as she stared down Jet. "We are not your enemies! Stop acting like a complete lunatic!" Zuko growled behind her. "Orora, stay out of this!" Jet's grip on his swords only tightened. "I will not listen to anyone who betrays their own people to help firebenders."
He took a running start, prompting Orora to drop in her stance to defend herself, however her plan of action went out the window when Zuko pushed her to the side. So forcefully that she fell to the ground with a loud thud.
Jet threw his leg out, catching Zuko in the chest and watching as he went flying through the air, smashing through the doors of the tea shop and out into the street. As the rest of the patrons rushed out to see what would happen next, Iroh quickly helped Orora to stand up.
"Are you alright my dear?" He asked, checking her over for injuries. She gave a quick nod, before stumbling to the door of the shop, Iroh following behind.
Outside the battle continued to rage between the two teenagers.
"Please, son, you're confused! You don't know what you're doing!" Even he was getting worried that Zuko would snap and use his firebending. Orora began to pray silently to the Moon Spirit, hoping her pleas would be heard and that Zuko wouldn't get hurt or reveal his true identity. The people would surely kill Zuko and Iroh, if they knew who they really were.
"Bet you wish he'd help you out with a little fire blast right now." As Jet swung at Zuko's feet, Zuko stabbed one of his broadswords through the hilt of his sword, pinning it to the ground. Jet looked annoyed at loosing his weapon, before focusing back on Zuko. "You're the one who needs help." Zuko responded. Leaving the sword embedded in the floor, they shifted to combating with a single sword each. Jet turned in a circle, trying to swipe at Zuko once again, but Zuko quickly advanced and swung his sword at Jet.
The Freedom Fighter quickly bent backward to avoid the blade, though it did manage to cut the straw sticking out of his mouth in half. Regaining his balance, Jet jumped backward onto the edge of a well. "You see that‌?!" He called out to the gathered crowd. "The Fire Nation is trying to silence me. It'll never happen." He attacked once more, hooking his sword to the top of the well and sending a flying kick towards Zuko.
Zuko growled as he dodged the kick and swung his sword at Jet once again. He moved to the side, and suddenly they were back-to-back, trying to land a hit, but neither could get past the other's defense.
Just then two newcomers entered the crowd. And from their uniforms, they looked to be of an official status. "Drop your weapons." One of them commanded. The two fighters stepped away and faced each other. Though Zuko lowered his sword, Jet pointed his weapon at Zuko, Iroh and Orora.
"Arrest them! They're firebenders!" Iroh stepped forward, throwing his arms out. "This poor boy is confused. We're just simple refugees." Pao, wanting to defend his employees joined in as he pointed to Jet. "This young man wrecked my tea shop, and assaulted my employees!" The customer from whom Zuko had borrowed the swords stepped forward. "It's true, sir. We saw the whole thing. This crazy kid attacked the finest tea maker in the city." Iroh blushed at the compliment. "Oh, ho, ho. That's very sweet."
Knowing it would be like adding wood to the fire, Orora stepped forward. "And he attacked me and threatened to hurt my Master and his nephew." She walked towards the two men, hand exposed to the wrist where he had grabbed her earlier. Sure enough the bruise from his grip was already beginning to change the color of her skin. The sight of it had Zuko nearly swinging his sword once again, but Iroh placed a hand on his shoulder to stop him.
It would seem the two had heard enough. As Jet continued his tirade of firebenders and Fire Nation, he was escorted to a cart where he was put in the metal cell and taken away.
Orora watched him go, unaware of the crowd as it dispersed around them.
"Orora?" At Iroh's voice, she turned around, still a little spooked with what had just happened. Or rather what could've happened. "Why don't you and Li go home. I'll help Pao clean up and meet you there."
As if she had no control over her actions, Orora took off her apron and handed it to Iroh, who gave her a sympathetic smile. "Do see that my nephew wasn't too hurt from the kick, my dear." The concern was evident in his gaze, as was the guilt in her own as she glanced at Zuko who was returning the sword to it's rightful owner.
Giving him a small nod, she waited for Zuko to walk past her, before following after him towards their shared home.

XI. Covered in Fire
Author: @firelordsfirelady
Imagine: When Y/N—a princess of one of the Water Tribes—is told she’s leaving her tribe, she never expects that she’s to be betrothed to the Fire Lord’s son, nor was she prepared to be exiled the very day she arrived at the Fire Nation. With her life in the hands of her new fiancée, how will life change for the princess?
Pairing: Zuko x F!Reader
Trigger warnings: arranged marriage, feelings of fear, banishment, mentions of burns/abuse, frustration, violence, betrayal
Word Count: 2936
Destined to be Yin and Yang
I own no rights to Avatar the Last Airbender or any of the characters/story.
Author’s Notes
The characters as all aged up so Zuko’s banishment happens when he’s 16
Keep in mind I am bringing a unique world with inspiration from ATLA in their characters, some of the events that happen, bending, etc. Not many things may align or occur with what happened in the show. It’s intended that way, so I hope you enjoy it regardless.
Y/N's look this chapter here.

A set of knocks sounded on my door the next more and sent off a pounding in my head that led to the groan that left my mouth.
“Forgive me, but your presence is requested for tea at Uncles.” Zuko’s voice came from the other side of the door before I heard steps walk away. My head felt like I had hit it against a rock as the pounding made me close my eyes in pain. I slowly dragged myself out of bed and grabbed the first piece of fabric my hand grabbed in the darkness of my room. With how my head felt, I was thankful for the blanket covering the window and how it dimmed the light in there. I put on the dress before I threw my hair up in a bun and then left the room. I slowly walked down the hall as the soft pads of my leather shoes connecting with the floor sounded like thunder in my head. I grimaced as I knocked on Iroh’s door and Iroh opened the door to greet me.
“Good morning, Y/N.” His voice was horribly loud for my ears this morning, but his words stopped as he took in my appearance then a wide smile spread across his face. Looking over his shoulder, I saw Zuko standing with reddened cheeks as his fists clenched at his sides. Iroh’s laughter made me look at the older man with a grimace of confusion. I smoothed down the fabric of my dress as I looked down to find blood-red fabric greeting the cones in my eyes.
Of course, I would blindly put on Fire Nation colors. My cheeks felt aflame as I looked back up to the older man as he motioned for me to enter the room. Avoiding eye contact with Zuko, I happily sank into one of the cushions in front of a small table where a tea set rested. The tea smelled like the cure to my pounding head, so I carefully picked up the pot and poured myself a cup of the warm liquid. Carefully setting the teapot down, I tried to hide the grimace on my face as the soft sound caused my head to pound more.
“How do you feel this morning?” Zuko asked in a level tone as I closed my eyes and I slowly stirred some honey into my cup. The soft clinks of the spoon against the cup didn’t help soothe my head. Not able to tolerate the noise of the spoon anymore, I covered my ears and gently laid my head against the table’s surface.
“The sound of my own breathing is sending waves of pain through my head.” My voice was muffled as I spoke into the table. “The light is too bright in the dim-ass hallway.” I felt tears gathering in my eyes as the pain in my head was quickly becoming unbearable with my eyes, so I closed my eyes. “I really want to drink this cup of tea but I just cannot tolerate the sound of the spoon in the cup.” Fighting a sob towards the end, I took a deep breath in an effort to calm myself down. Neither one of them said anything and I took a few moments to calm down before I spoke again. “Are we still on our course for the Fire Nation?”
Silence greeted my question as I tried to recollect what happened last night. I couldn’t remember much of what happened after I brought Iroh and Zuko the cupcakes. My heart felt heavy in my chest as an ominous sensation danced over the hairs on my skin.
“He ran!” Zuko’s paroxysm of rage caused a yelp to leave my lips as his fist collided with the table next to him. “The world’s greatest warrior! And he ran. He’s a coward!” I tried to plug my ears to protect my head from the volume of his voice.
“I wouldn’t say that.” Iroh’s voice was soft enough for me to unplug my ears to hear him clearly. “I would just say the Avatar isn’t what either you or I were expecting.”
“I’m still the heir to the Fire Nation Throne--” Zuko’s volume was much quieter than before, and I felt some of the tension in my shoulders relax as a thought crossed my mind. Focusing on the honey and the tea, I hovered my hand over the cup and mixed the contents within before I lifted my head to take a sip.
Mixed to perfection. I took another sip as the pounding in my head slowly dulled as the warm liquid filled my stomach.
“It is precisely the reason why being in this remote corner of the world is an advantage.” Iroh’s soft words brought me back to the situation of the room.
“So, where are we heading now?” I asked as I dared to open my eyes. Iroh was sitting with his legs crossed on the cushion across from me as he sipped on his own cup of tea.
“We will be meeting with the Commander of an outpost nearby.” Zuko’s calm words seemed bitter as he turned away from me to look at the map on the wall.
“How long until we arrive?
“We will dock in a few hours.” I gave a nod as I relished in another sip of the tea before I bit my lip as I asked my next question.
“Is it okay if I stay on the ship?”
If I understood what Zuko said the other night, then I didn’t need to be going to outposts and meeting Commanders as his fiancée. Zuko looked over at me as he pondered what he wanted to say.
“If you are feeling alright, your presence would be preferred.” I couldn’t distinguish what his tone was trying to say, but he cleared his throat and continued in a level tone. “You are my betrothed, after all. You will need to know the business of the Fire Nation.”
My mind couldn’t quite wrap my head around what Zuko meant by his words, but I finished my cup of tea before I gently set the cup down.
“I shall attend the next meeting then.” I stood up and bowed to the two men in the room as my head felt better than before, but I wanted to be in the silence of my room for a while. “I will await the news of the meeting.”
Leaving without another word, I quickly made the short journey to my room and shut the door before I collapsed onto the bed. Exhaustion quickly gave way to a dreamless rest as I suddenly opened my eyes at the sound of knocking on my door.
“Yes?” I quietly answered as I wiped the sleep from my eyes.
“We have docked at the outpost.” Zuko’s voice came from the other side of the door. “Will you be accompanying us?” Slowly sitting up in the bed, I still felt the dull ache in my head and the pain in my chest.
“I will attend the next one.” I kept my voice even as I moved to sit in the chair. “I’ll stay on the ship.” Zuko said nothing before I heard his footsteps walk away from the door.
A little while later, I was sitting in my room working on shading my firebender when the sound of hurrying footsteps came from down the hall. The door to my bedroom was flung open by several Fire Nation soldiers.
“Wha—“ Hands roughly grabbed my arms and dragged me out of my room. “What’s the meaning of this?” I asked as I tried to pull away from two men holding me.
“Silence, Waterbender.” One of the men harshly ordered, and I felt the color drain from my face.
This was not going to end well.
The men drug me through the streets of the small outpost before they brought me to a set of double doors. A sinking feeling developed in the pit of my stomach as the guards outside the room threw open the door to reveal Zuko and Iroh as they sat in two chairs in the middle of the room. The sound of the door opening drew the room’s occupants’ attention as I was roughly brought to my knees a few feet away from the Prince. Zuko’s eyes briefly flashed with anger as he saw me, and Iroh’s face twisted in concern. A stranger stood between us three, and my breath hitched as he turned around to reveal the stranger who had thrown the fireball at me. His eyes stared down at me with hatred and amusement as the guards holding me spoke.
“The interviews with the crew are complete. They said that this one right here is a Waterbender.” The word itself must’ve tasted bitter on the guard’s tongue as he tightened his grip on my bicep. I bit the inside of my cheek to prevent any signs of pain from showing on my face. I’m sure all the color has drained from my face as my heart pounds in my ears. Bravely, I focused letting my eyes convey defiance as the man smiled then humorlessly laughed.
“You lost the Avatar because you picked up a Waterbender and she helped the Avatar escape.” The man’s words were full of humor as he laughed before my vision faded from impact with an object. If the guards weren’t holding me as tightly as they were, I would have fallen to the ground. The silence around me slowly faded into loud shouting. As my vision slowly came into focus, Zuko was standing face-to-face with the man.
“Do you want a burn to match?” Zuko sounded pissed.
“Are you challenging me to an Agni Kai?” Zhao teased.
“Agni Kai at sunset.” Zuko spat at the man. The two men holding me suddenly let me go and I barely caught myself before I hit the ground too hard. Iroh walked over and gently helped me stand up.
“Too bad your father won’t be here to watch me humiliate you.” The man and his guards turned and left the room after he said his venomous words. Once the three of us were alone, Iroh calmly spoke to Zuko.
“An Agni Kai?” I watched Zuko’s face as his uncle spoke. “You remember what happened last time you fought a master.” Zuko’s fists clenched at the mention of the event.
“Let’s get Y/N back to the ship.” Zuko turned on his heel. “She needs to see the doctor.”
Iroh offered to help walk me back to the ship, but I declined as I forced myself to stand on my own two feet. The world spun for a moment before I centered myself and followed behind Zuko as he quickly left for the ship. The Prince’s steps were too quick for the state I was currently in, so I leisurely walked with Iroh to the boat.
“Iroh,” I asked as we walked. “Who was that guy?”
“He’s Commander Zhao. He is a bitter man who is always seeking to climb in the ranks of the Fire Nation.” Iroh’s tone was calm as he spoke to me. “He carries on the Fire Nation’s beliefs that fire is the superior element.” Iroh watched as Zuko’s figure slowly got farther away from us.
“I could see that hit you took from the Commander threw you for a loop.” Iroh’s voice was gentle as he spoke. “I think it upset Zuko because he exploded at Zhao.” I felt worry settle into my facial features.
Was Zuko in the Agni Kai because of me? I shook the arrogant thought from my head as I tried to quicken my steps to the boat.
After receiving clearance from the doctor, I stood next to Iroh in front of Zuko as he kneeled on one knee. The air of the Agni Kai field was hot with the heat of anger coming off the two men as they kneeled with their backs to each other. I swallowed the words in my throat as I gave Zuko a reassuring smile.
There was no doubt in my mind that Zuko would win.
“Remember the firebending basics, Prince Zuko.” Iroh coached him in a soft tone.
“I’m not going to let him win.” Zuko stood and turned as the red cloth draped around his shoulders flew to the ground below him. Zhao did the same and a large bell was hit to signify the start of the battle. Iroh pulled me to the side to watch from a safe distance. The two men were of similar builds as their bodies were toned and evident of consistent training. A split moment of silence fell upon the field before Zuko let out a yell as he sent whirl after whirl of fire. The Commander effortlessly dodged Zuko’s attacks as Zuko panted from his effort. Zhao seemed to dance as he dodged and blocked Zuko’s fire blasts. Zhao sent Zuko a blast that was larger than any fire Zuko had sent Zhao’s way. Zuko looked slightly overwhelmed for a moment, which served to boast Zhao’s confidence as he got ready to attack again.
“You got this Zuko.” I whispered to myself as I watched the scene unfold in front of me. I saw Iroh glance at me out of my peripheral.
“Basics, Zuko!” Iroh yelled as a reminder. “Break his root!” My heart raced as Zuko blocked three shots Zhao fired at him, but the fourth one sent Zuko flying backward. I looked at Iroh who shook his head as I shifted the weight on my feet.
I knew the rules of the Agni Kai, but I wanted to help Zuko. Zhao pursued and moved to burn Zuko. Zuko’s face twisted in fear before Zuko spun on his hands and used his feet to dispel the fire from the Commander and swipe the Commander’s leg out from him. Zhao fell to the ground with a heavy thud as Zuko stood in an offensive stance. His golden eyes shone with confidence as he kicked fire at the Commander, sending the older man scattering backward as Zuko persisted with the attack. Zuko sent fire kick after kick towards the Commander until the man with the sideburns fell and rolled onto his back
“Do it.” The Commander taunted Zuko as the Prince stood victoriously over the older firebender. Zuko sent a fireball towards the left side of the ground next to the general. As Zuko stood there, I found myself admiring the young prince as he stood above the older man. He could have easily given the Commander the burn mark Zuko had promised him, but he stood triumphantly and looked as calm as a cucumber.
“Your father raised a coward,” Zhao remarked bitterly after he did not receive the burn he was expecting. I balled my fist at the Commander’s words, but I looked at Zuko as he calmly spoke.
“Next time you get in my way, I promise I won’t hold back.” Zuko turned to walk away from the older man as he lay on the ground. I smiled with pride as Zuko walked towards his uncle and me.
As Zuko walked towards us, we walked towards him as I watched the Commander stand up. I saw his shoulders tense before he let out a yell. In the blink of an eye, I summoned a large wave of water to intersect the large blast of fire Zhao sent toward the Prince with my hand before I caught the foot of the Commander. The air of the battlefield stilled as I narrowed my eyes at the surprised face of the Commander before I sent him flying back with a wave of water. As the Commander collided and slid along the floor a few feet away from me, I straightened my posture and smoothed the soft red material of my dress as I heard Iroh exclaim from behind me.
“No, Prince Zuko, do not taint your victory!” I narrowed my eyes at the Commander as he lay on the ground in a puddle of water. His eyes seethed with anger as he looked at me as I audaciously stood in my place.
“This is how the great Commander Zhao acts in defeat?” The words left my mouth evenly as I spoke to the man. “Coward.” I turned on my heel and walked back over to Zuko and his uncle before I added. “Even in exile, Zuko is more honorable than you.” Zuko’s eyes met mine as his golden orbs tried to convey a message to me.
What’s that look for? I simply smiled at the Prince as I turned to look at Iroh as he spoke.
“Thanks again for the tea. It was delicious.” The three of us turned around and left through the large doors of the Agni Kai battlegrounds. The walk back to the ship was quiet and, as we arrived back to the ship, I quickly bowed to Zuko when he turned around to look at me.
“Forgive me, but I am still not fully recovered from all of the recent excitement.” My head was starting to pound stronger now that adrenaline wasn’t pumping through my veins. “I just need to rest.”
“Yes, please rest easy, Princess.” Iroh said as he turned to bow to me, but I gave the older man a disapproving look.
“I hate that name.” Placing my hands on my hips, I sighed as I smiled at the older man. “If anyone shall need me, you know where I’ll be.”
Without waiting for a reply, I quickly made my way to my room.

give us some adult izumi’s relationship with her parents. pLEASE.
no lol
mai died in her mid-60s (around 20 years before tlok) and it absolutely FUCKED izumi up.
izumi often visits her grave and talks to her, especially when she is struggling with something
she makes sure PERSONALLY that mai always has the best, most beautiful flowers in her grave
"i swear on my mother's grave i am not lying" (shes lying)
she has "i need my mom" moments but her mom is dead :(
not directly izumi and mai. but when iroh was kidnapped by his father, mai went after him with azula and ty lee
now zuko. ZUKO IS THE GIRL DAD OK
they have tea together every day
they hug. so much. zuko is a hugger and no one needs more zuko hugs than his daughter
zuko always brings presents to izumi
the still sees her as his baby girl AND HE LETS HER AND EVERYONE KNOW
izumi resents her father in someways tho:
zuko completely crumbled after mai's passing, leaving izumi in charge of everything and he just resigned from the throne like a month later, forcing her to become Fire Lord too fast, still grieving and with her children small. and she cant help feeling angry about it sometimes
HE AGREED TO ARRANGE HER MARRIAGE. and she ended up with Isao
when izumi is nervous she instinctively reaches for his hand or just moves next to him
he always kisses her head
bonus: Zuko was the first one in the Gaang to have grandchildren and he made it EVERYONE'S PROBLEM

i finished a new media so now it’s time for ATLA PRIDE HCs WOOOO!!!
so aang is unlabeled (and doesn’t identify as unlabeled either 💀💀) in all areas basically. he loves freely and doesn’t see gender or sex. he doesn’t see it in himself either. he mostly presents and refers to himself as a dude, but he found out he doesn’t mind being seen as a lady either. he’s crushed on katara and zuko during different points in his life, but he settled on katara. functionally, he’s pan and genderfluid.
katara is queer. she is the most unqueer queer ever though. she acts straight as a board I tell ya. she doesn’t really confine herself to labels much either, but she can tell you she was surprised at how much she enjoyed Lady Aang when that first became a thing.
sokka is bi. he probably thought men were supposed to marry women, but he quickly got over it when he got over his short lived misogyny. bi awakening wasn’t really a thing, he just sorta knew he always liked boys and girls. he’s had many crushes, but yue and suki are the ones that always stood out the most for him. obvi he dabbles in drag, that’s like sorta a canon thing. zuko’s autistic charms get to him and he ends up developing a crush on him.
toph is an aroace lesbian. she only dates the finest of women. she can tell she’ll read your heart with her feet.
zuko is gay like GAAAYYYY I don’t mean to bring accidental cheesy puns into this but he is a FLAMING homosexual, and I refuse to believe otherwise. at some point I said “I like zutara, but I just think atla is way funnier when in the back of your mind, zuko is gay.” anyways he’s gay and sex repulsed. zuko didn’t know he liked boys until he was 17, and he didn’t realize he was completely gay until a year later. he was very comphet and was always expected to produce a blood heir, and he didn’t think much of it. looking back, zuko noticed how he did find boys cute when he was younger and often avoided them because of it. he could sense that he and his sister were different, but he always thought that was because they were royalty. he only really started dating mai because they had so much in common, he thought that’s what was supposed to happen. when zuko, not long after becoming fire lord, realized he liked boys, he kept it to himself. a year later when he realized he only liked boys, he vented about it to mai, and she helped him through it. they broke up, but he still values her friendship. zuko finally gets with sokka in his 20s. yeah it took that long.
OTHER CHARACTERS THAT AREN’T GAANG THAT COME TO MIND!!
azula is a LESSSBIAAAAN that is a lesbian
I wanna say suki and ty lee are dating
smeller bee is definitely trans I don’t wanna hear it
uncle iroh doesn’t care. he loved his wife whatever happened to her, and he would also date a man.
EDIT: sorry just here to say that zukaang is endgame actually. they get together in aang’s mid to late 20s after pining for a long time. aang always had sorta an underlying unspoken crush on zuko, and zuko caught feelings when aang shot up taller than him and he realized aang got really handsome. and yknow. the fact that THEY’RE SOULMATES.

Zutara Month Day 9: "You're Married?!"
The council had been at a standstill for what felt like hours. As firm as Zuko stood on the issues of importance, he had ended up making several accommodations for the high-ranking officers and nobles who were slow to accept change, and even slower to accept it from Ozai's traitor son. One general, in particular, had been making snide comments all day about Zuko's interests being compromised, using the phrase, "in bed with the Avatar," in a way that made Katara's skin itch every time she heard it. She couldn't tell if Zuko didn't notice the implications of what the man was saying, or if he was merely trying to keep up the pretense of social norms. He had become almost scarily good at doing such, bowing and smiling in a way that made Katara almost suspect he had been possessed by some interloper from the spirit realm, it was so unlike Zuko, although he had learned from Iroh. But the other members of the council definitely noticed, and the man's comments were increasingly earning titters from several of the Earth Kingdom ambassadors, even though their reasons for disliking Zuko were on opposite ends of the political spectrum. It seemed that no matter who he tried to please, Zuko was making enemies in every corner. Even when Katara tried to turn the conversation back to what we are doing, reminding the officers that this plan was for a new world that would benefit the Fire Nation as much as the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes, they ignored her.
"The only thing I can't quite figure out," the general who had been making the rude comments all morning said, "is whether our Fire Lord here is the Avatar's pet, or whether the Avatar is his catamite."
That brought an equal amount of scandalized gasps as it had stifled laughter, but both were just as damaging. Katara couldn't take it anymore, and from the look of things, Zuko had finally reached the end of his patience as well, his face red and - was that steam coming out of his nose? Oh, no -
Katara hastily grabbed his hand in an exaggerated gesture, which had the effect of startling Zuko out of his fuming and forced them all to look at her. Good.
"How dare you," she began, "make such crass comments about my husband."
"You're married?!"
That certainly brought gasps from around the room, but no laughter this time. Zuko was standing very still next to her, his eyes wide.
Just go with it, she mouthed to him, squeezing his hand in reassurance in what she hoped looked to the rest of the council like a loving gesture.

i saw a fanart on pinterest when i decided to change my entire phone theme and i can’t get it out of my head.
the art was just after the zuko and ozai agni kai. zuko was knocked out, iroh was getting ready to take him and leave, and azula just came in and said “i took care of it”. if anyone knows what i’m talking about and has it saved or knows the og artist pls lmk!!
anyways. it got me thinking about an expansion of this au (that i will never write because i have neither the patience nor the time to do that) that (unsurprisingly) results in disasterlesbian!azula
so hear me out on this one. there would need to be an entire plot. like. what’s aang going to do??
azula killed ozai by electrocuting him. it’s the first time she discovers her lightning bending. it looks like he had a heart attack in his sleep. (don’t get too wrapped up in the details. azula’s a prodigy she can be overpowered for a bit)
why did she kill her dad? she’ll swear up and down that it was because “he really should have picked on someone with a better fighting ability than zuzu. honestly, it’s stupid he didn’t lose his honor after frying my pathetic firebender of a brother to a crisp.” it’s actually because she kind of sort of loves zuko. she will NEVER admit that.
iroh becomes fire lord, albeit a bit reluctantly. he spends the next three years attempting to end the war, stop the spread of propaganda in the fire nation, and deal with his niece and nephew bickering all the time.
so aang comes out of the iceberg. meets katara and sokka. katara convinces him to take her to the north pole because he’s the avatar, he still should probably master all four elements war or not. all of the traveling is the same (except zuko chasing them) until they get to omashu and king bumi is like “what’s up my dude, welcome back. we’re recovering from a war, so you should probably learn politics and how to not offend anyone while you master the elements!!”
(“there was a WAR?!?!!!” -aang, probably)
so now aang does a deep dive into all of the nation’s politics while also training. katara doesn’t really attend his meetings, but sokka’s a total nerd and is sat for every single one. first is waterbending at the north pole. insert canon things but add in a meeting with arnook.
this is where we introduce the REAL enemy, because the enemy can’t be the gaang attempting to learn international law at 12, 14, and 15 years old. during the full moon someone assassinates the moon spirit! (sorry yue, i love you but you still die in this au…)
so after mastering waterbending the gaang heads to the earth kingdom. they meet toph and she joins. they head to ba sing se, which, after trying to talk politics with the king, they realize is still completely unaware of the war. while in the earth kingdom, we get a name for the big bad. the dai li. after realizing that ba sing se is basically a military dictatorship, the gaang escapes and head to the fire nation.
that’s where zuko, azula, and iroh get reintroduced. aang and sokka consistently come back from meetings with the royals complaining about “oh my god, the princess is such a bitch. seriously, how is she allowed to help run this country??”
katara eventually goes with the boys to a meeting to get them to shut up. toph makes fun of her for being a people pleaser, but katara will do literally anything to get her brother and best friend to stop yapping about the same topic at her every. single. day.
azula (disaster lesbian) doesn’t say a single word throughout the entire meeting. sokka and aang walk out feeling like they were in the twilight zone. katara shows up to more and more meetings. why? definitely not cause the princess is sort of kind of somewhat cute intriguing.
insert azula’s gay awakening crisis here. she eventually starts talking at the meetings, but she’s only ever nice to katara lmao. katara does realize that azula’s an actual genius, though. she decides that the two of them could probably like, take over the entirety of ba sing se in a day if they tried hard enough. but of course that is purely hypothetical.
so one day a meeting gets interrupted by a literal dai li assassin trying to kill aang. he barely escapes the resulting fight.
so the dai li send more assassins. and even more assassins. until finally zuko gets fed up and is just like “alright i’m tired of dealing with these guys. can we please go kick their leader’s ass??”
that is how azula and zuko end up joining the gaang. and how azula can eventually lay siege over ba sing se (even if she reluctantly gives it back when katara tells her to).
other misc key points:
- azula and katara get together right before they fight with long feng. it happens cause katara notices that azula is nervous (nobody else would be able to tell) and so she’s like “zula. you’ve got this. we’ve got this” and kisses her lmao
- toph and azula are best friends, to katara’s obvious dismay
- the second azula calls zuko “zuzu” in front of sokka he immediately starts rolling on the floor and laughing. katara has to make sure his lungs are okay afterwards
- zuko: im literally not gay??” sokka: “yeah, and toph can see”
- toph regularly comes back to wherever the gaang is staying with bags of money. she knows how to find every single illegal fighting ring in the world.
- this is a loooooong term plot. since there’s no reason to worry about the comet it can take place over many years. which also means that katara and azula literally pine for each other until they’re like 20 and everyone around them, especially (and surprisingly) aang, is like “oh my god make it stop”

some more spitballing about the knowledge seeker Zuko AU
Zuko not only knows all of Wan Shi Tong's knowledge seekers by name, he also knows where their favorite spots to be scratched are. Loyalty earned.
He gets in the habit of sleeping curled up with the knowledge seekers. Once he discovers he can shapeshift into one, he gets in the habit of falling asleep in that form. It gets cold in the desert at night, and the library is no exception. This way he stays toasty and warm.
I like the subtle detail of Zuko's nails and teeth being just a little too sharp for anyone's comfort.
Zuko's senses are also keenly sharp, though he's still half-blind and half-deaf on his left side.
Despite all this, Zuko views himself as a human. Iroh theorizes that his nephew would have become a spirit much sooner had he not persisted with this belief despite all evidence to the contrary. Thank Agni his nephew is stubborn.
He can still speak in knowledge seeker form.
Sokka: wait, could the other ones talk?
Zuko: ...no? why would they be able to talk?
Sokka: but-!
Aang wondering what it would take to get Spirit to try and track down Appa in Ba Sing Se by scent. The answer is it's free, but he needs something of Appa's to do it so they're kind of out of luck in that department.
they leave Zuko alone for five minutes and he comes back with a bunch of scrolls and tomes that they're 100% sure he did not pay for. what are you even going to do with those. you can't take them back to wan shi tong.
zuko: ...sorry. habit.
yes, he still wears the mask even when they're infiltrating the Fire Nation. everyone just hurriedly explains that he has a nasty scar that he's trying to hide. nobody ever seems to question it, which... kind of feels like something they should dwell on, just a little.
(it's also not a lie. they think. his knowledge seeker form has a nasty scar, so he must have one in human form too, right?)
the Gaang goes quite awhile without ever seeing his face. the first person who sees it is Iroh, in the catacombs of Ba Sing Se.
(he finally tells them his name after the Earth Kingdom falls. yes, this does mean Aang wakes up to everyone inexplicably calling Spirit 'Zuko')
Hakoda hearing the spirit traveling with his children is named Zuko and apparently has a nasty facial scar under that mask. manifests the energy of the woman doing math meme. he's heard legends of humans turning into spirits- his own children witnessed as much, but what in the world did the former prince of the Fire Nation do to end up like this?
he'll just... keep that to himself.
Iroh has a lot of mixed feelings about the situation. He is grateful that his nephew is alive, but it is very distressing to find him in the state he is in. Of course, he would still love Zuko even as a spirit, but he can only hope that it is not too late to reverse course.
(but if his nephew is happier that way, well...)
POV: You're Azula. You're about to become Fire Lord, but before you can ascend to the throne, the Avatar's pet firebending spirit appears and challenges you to an Agni Kai on behalf of Iroh. You laugh. Only members of the royal line can make a challenge for the throne, even in the name of another. This is absurd.
Then they remove their mask. You've never seen them without it.
They have Zuko's face.

Hi there I have a request for a flick Azula X reader but I would like reader to be evil. Azula and reader, were arranged by marriage reader, is from a noble family, and is very ambitious very involved in the politics of the fire nation, and will do anything for his princess. He becomes fearful when he finds out that the Avatar survived Azula had lied to our father about the avatar reader comes up with a plan to frame Zuko, so for him and Azula, to avoid any consequences, should be Avatar appear readers plan is to assassinate the fire in frame, Zuko for it I hope this interests you
When two prodigies fall in love
You are the second born of a very powerful noble family in the Fire Nation. Although you were always smarter and better at firebending than your older brother, your parents always preferred your brother. That made you run away to the Fire Lord's castle at just 13 years old.
Well, maybe your parents were right. You had a spark of cunning and ambition from birth. And that spark burst into a devastating fire the moment you arrived in the capital.
Your talent, ambition and intelligence have caught the attention of the fire lord. One day, he invited you to train with him. You held your head high and fought him with dignity, and that impressed him.
Fire Lord Ozai made a plan, and soon, he put it into action. He exiled Zuko and arranged a marriage between you and Azula.
You tasted power like a shark tastes blood. You played your cards like a master. You were always the son Ozai wanted.
You gave Azula the attention and affection she had always wanted. You noticed the irregularities in the princess's behavior and the fact that she had become dependent on you in a very short time.
You consulted a very good psychiatrist and found out that Azula was suffering from a mental illness. You got the medicine the princess needed. And then you killed the psychiatrist. Not a single person was to know that the princess was insane.
knowing that Ozai had spies everywhere, you decided to act like a good future son-in-law, worried about his future wife and the fate of the nation.
That very evening, you requested a private meeting with the Fire Lord.
You went to his quarters and he was curiously waiting for you. You bowed to him and he told you to sit down and have some tea with him. You sat in front of him and took a sip of tea catching him with a worried and tired look.
He frowned at you. He asked you what happened.
You sighed and told him about what you discovered. You put your head in your hands and told him that you were devastated to find out that your future wife and princess was suffering from something like this.
He put his teacup down, frozen for a few seconds. Then he got up and started having a nervous breakdown. He threw flames all around him, cursing Ursa and accusing her of giving him two useless children.
You did your best to calm him down, ending up with a few burns. After he calmed down, he told you that you are his only hope, the only one who will be able to continue his mission. Ozai also told you that you must do everything in your power to control the princess. You swore on your honor to keep everything under control.
You left and went to the infirmary to have your wounds tended to. Then you went to Azula's room. As soon as you entered her room, Azula practically pounced on you with questions about where you were and how you got hurt. You told her that Ozai had a nervous breakdown and that you were his unfortunate victim.
You saw the princess's expression distort and all the respect and love she felt for her father burn away, leaving behind a burning hatred. You stop her before she tries to kill her father.
That night, as she slept in your arms, she vowed to destroy her father.
You played a double game, making Ozai think Azula was a wild fire to be contained, and making Azula think Ozai was planning to get rid of the two of you.
besides, you sent letters to Iroh, using the friendship between your brother and his deceased son to get under his skin. You managed to make Zuko and Iroh blindly trust you.
When Zuko came back and Azula told you about her killing the avatar you almost laughed. instead, you kept a calm face and congratulated her on her victory in Ba Sing Se. Then you went on a date with her, making sure the chef prepared all her favorite dishes. At the romantic date you explained that the Avatar is more than likely alive. She looked worried so you reassured her that everything would be fine. You advised her to tell her father that Zuko killed the avatar.
In the evening, you visited Iroh in his prison. You drank tea and promised to take care of Zuko and Azula.
The next day, you trained with Zuko with the Dao swords. After training, you ate fire flakes and played Pai Sho. Before the Eclipse you advised Zuko to join the Avatar.
Ozai was furious after Zuko's betrayal. You acted like you were shocked at what happened and expressed your gratitude to Agni that the Fire Lord was fine.
This way you ensured that whether the Fire Nation won the war or not, you would be on the winning side.
During Sozin's comet, you were forced by Ozai to stay hidden in your family home.
You returned to the palace as soon as you heard of Ozai's defeat. Zuko welcomed you with open arms and even named you Admiral. You thanked him and asked for Azula to be released into your custody.
He looked worried and asked you to reconsider your idea. You flatly refused and manipulated Zuko into bringing Azula back to the palace.
Once back at the palace, Azula acted like a lost dragoon and didn't dare spend even five minutes away from you.
Now you look after Azula and wield your influence from the shadows, waiting for the moment when you can strike and claim the throne.
Although I do not own the characters from avatar the last airbender, this work belongs to me! I sincerely hope you liked it. please rate it and leave a comment! follow me to see my next posts! Don’t forget that the request are open💖💖💨

Hey, everybody~! This post will have several headcanons that I have about Aang, Zuko and the ZukAang (or those that I can remember). I would also like to add some Au's and previous posts (can also include links to fanfics I wrote... the fanfics are in Spanish).
The Air Nomads are the tallest of the four nations, which is why Aang ended up taller than Zuko.
Zuko feels more relaxed when he's in Aang's company.
Aang doesn't like spicy food, but he accompanies Zuko to eat super spicy noodles or curry because he knows he loves it.
Zuko is more tolerant of alcohol than Aang.
Aang is the kind of drunk who gets into dancing and flirting, but he's also too prone to causing a lot of disasters (it's better to have the Avatar sober).
Zuko is the kind of drunk who gets sentimental and clingy.
In the world of ATLA they communicate through a common language and each nation has its own language. Aang is the only native who speaks Air Language.
Aang is a polyglot.
Aang, due to the way he speaks, expresses himself and uses certain words, speaks as an old man in all languages, except the Water Language, due to his coexistence with Katara and Sokka.
The first time Zuko heard Aang speak Fire Language, he was so surprised that Aang's voice could be heard so good~.
Zuko has tried to learn Air Language to surprise Aang, but it's very difficult, especially because Air Language sounds like whistling.
Zuko once tried to pay Aang a compliment in Air Language, ended up saying something else and Aang was laughing until he fell off his chair.
Aang is quite skilled at playing Pai Sho, much more so than Iroh.
Zuko is not a beginner, but he is not very good at playing Pai Sho either.
The only people who have beaten Aang in pai shou are: Gyatso and Zuko, but because Zuko knows how to unfocus him to cheat.
Aang suffers from insomnia when he is stressed, and even more so during stormy season. He is still a little afraid of sleeping and waking up at another time.
Aang often helps Zuko with paperwork when he can't sleep.
Zuko and Aang share dreams, literally, interacting between dreams when they are away from each other.
Zuko knows when something is stressing or making Aang anxious in dreams, because Aang appears with hair in dreams [& fanfic]
Zuko has an agreement with Appa, and it's to feign fatigue around the Fire Nation so Aang can take a break.
When Zuko is the one who is stressed/tired, Aang pets his head and combs his hair. He sometimes helps him with work, but Zuko prefers Aang to have his full attention on him.
There are two notable characteristics within the Fire Nation royal family; golden eyes and the canine teeth are quite noticeable, which look like dragon fangs. Zuko has these two characteristics.
Zuko doesn't usually smile with his teeth because he is embarrassed to show his fangs due to comments that Azula, Ozai, and others have said about them. He very rarely smiles with his teeth.
Aang upon learning about Zuko's fangs, began trying to make him laugh out loud to see them. He likes his fangs.
The palace councilors were scandalized the first time they saw Avatar Aang playing and combing the Fire Lord Zuko's hair [reaction]
Aang sings very well, but in his own language he is out of tune. He likes more playing instruments and is an excellent dancer.
In his education as a prince, Zuko learned various arts: he loved learning to draw, paint, and play. The arts that involve music are not his strong suit, unless they are applied with theater.
Zuko was banished before having a society presentation. So Aang was the first person to ask him to dance.
Aang always asks Zuko to dance when they are at a party.
The palace servants had become accustomed to finding Fire Lord Zuko and Avatar Aang sleeping together with various documents in front of them.
Aang and Zuko have escaped from the palace to go to the festival disguised as Kuzon and Lee.
Zuko has drawings of Aang in his notebook, including a drawing where Aang fell asleep under the tree where the pond is and the duck-turtles started playing on top of him.
Aang very rarely cries.
Aang is the only foreign Avatar with symbolic representation in the Fire Nation.
Zuko, Aang and rainbow fire.
Aang has pet names for Zuko.
Zuko prefers silver over gold, because it reminds him of Aang's eyes.
This part is from several AUs (especially Modern and High School), What if…? and other ideas. [I may also mention other ships in some posts, but because I like to shipping Aang a lot]
Modern/HighSchool
Aang moved from his village to the city when he was 12 years old. He lives with the daughter of a friend of Gyatso; her name is Kyoshi and she lives together with her partner, Rangi.
To make documentation easier, Aang adopted the Rangi's last name.
Rangi saw potential in Aang, so Aang knows differents martial arts.
Aang met Katara and Sokka on one of his explorations around the city (he got lost).
Aang has few of his own clothes, the rest of his wardrobe was clothes that Gyatso and his friends wore when they were young and lived for a while in the city, so he has different styles of clothing from the 70's and 80's.
Aang has been to the police station so many times that he knows every cop in the station.
The last time he got into big trouble, Rangi punished him and transferred him to an academy with Fire Nation-style discipline.
Zuko at age 11 and the following years experienced difficult situations, from the death of a cousin, Uncle Iroh distancing himself from the family, his parents' divorce and Ozai taking custody.
Zuko has an accident and ends up with a burn on his face.
Due to the accident, the issue of custody is reopened, but since Ursa doesn't have the necessary resources to keep Zuko and Azula, Iroh offers to keep them for a while in what has better stability.
Azula refuses this agreement, shortly after ending up at her aunts' house. Zuko and Azula spend the weekend with different parents, Zuko with Ursa and Azula with Ozai.
Although his situation is more stable, the scar is a reminder of problems, so Zuko became a more isolated person.
When Ursa managed to achieve financial stability, Zuko decided to continue living in his uncle's house.
Zuko works part time at his uncle's tea shop.
Zuko and Azula continue to maintain contact, especially when they have to spend a few weeks together with one of their parents.
Zuko and Aang had had short encounters before Aang transferred to Zuko's school.
Despite being the only Air Temple boy, Aang quickly won over most of the students.
For school reasons, Aang has to wear long sleeves and a bandana to cover his tattoos.
Zuko thinks Aang is the typical airheaded popular guy.
Due to some situations, they end up living together more and little by little they get to know each other better.
Aang is in the dance club and Zuko is in the drama club. Zuko asks Aang for help with his play.
Aang, Zuko and bonfire.
Valentine's Day
Ozai is still a terrible father, but...

Note
The fire nation's defeat was technically Azula's fault.
Zuko and Iroh were branded traitors and failures. Azula was given specific instructions to capture them, dead or alive. Azula had them both red-handed in Ba Sing Se. Instead of doing what she was told, she asks for Zuko's help and she clears his name in return.
Now, it could be argued that without Zuko's help, she would've been pummeled into submission by Aang and Azula. Well, then after his usefulness was used up, she had a chance to pull yet another fast one and apprehend him without having to lie to Ozai.
Zuko acted suspiciously. He made Azula doubt that Aang really died and she began to think that Zuko may have had something to do with his survival. Instead of searching for proof of Aang's survival and informing her suspicions to Ozai, she puts unnecessary risk on herself and sets up a gambit that was ultimately pointless in more ways than one.
If Azula did what she was supposed to do, Zuko and Iroh would be dead or put in prison which leads to Zuko never finding out about the plans with the comet, Aang never finds a firebending sifu, the FN gains victory unopposed, and Azula can reign as Fire Lord.
In short, by choosing to lend Zuko a hand more than once, she indirectly did Team Avatar a huge favor.
Boom: Butterfly Effect.
The FN's MVP was also Team Avatar's MVP. I do enjoy the irony.
I wonder though, what would the Gaang's, Azula's Zuko's, Iroh's, Ozai's, and all of FN's reactions when realizing this epiphany?
It would break Azula.
...no seriously. It would break her.
While I think it would be a bit of a stretch to say that the defeat of the Fire Nation was her fault (cause there's no way in hell she could've seen bringing Zuko home would end up with his betrayal of Ozai), I do think she was hurting already with Zuko betraying her. If she was torn up about Mai and Ty Lee turning on her, I have no doubt she'd feel the same about Zuko regardless of what her relationship with him is right now. Add on to the fact that this is a girl that is hoisted with way too much responsibility than she is able to handle (being driven to become perfect at any cost), a revelation like this would destroy her.
And the fallout wouldn't be pretty. At all. It would probably rival her breakdown at Sozin's Comet, if not be worse. Hell, I think Zuko and Iroh would be a bit concerned for her. Zuko did seem somewhat regretful at her state after the Last Agni Kai and Iroh (while not Azula's biggest fan) probably wouldn't be that callous to brush her off.
Ozai would hate her though. Hate hate HATE her though. He puts on so much pressure for her to be perfect. What do you think the abusive piece of shit is going to do when he puts two and two together. Might even disown her on the spot, which will cause her to spiral even more. And she'd probably lose a lot of support in the Fire Nation for indirectly letting an unpopular successor on the throne, which would cause her to spiral even further.
...kind of why I don't really want to put the blame on the Fire Nation's defeat on her since the poor kid doesn't need that on top of her failures already. Besides, I think the defeat of the Fire Nation can better be laid on Ozai's feet. I mean, he was the one who banished Zuko and mistreated both him and Azula. If we want to go indirect, he set up a domino effect. And directly, he wasn't able to consolidate the Fire Nation's gains at the end of the war which led to a huge rebellion movement. And he certainly didn't seem to want to get involved with fighting Aang during the Day of the Black Sun which could've stacked the odds further against him when the firebending was turned back on. Mind you, this was before Zuko showed up. Like he was sipping tea while Azula was holding the Gaang off.
That being said, I could see him pass the buck off on Azula for the Fire Nation's defeat. Which would lead into the scenario I just outlined above.

Post canon AU where the war ends bc Ozai gets murdered by Iroh after the siege of the North and Zuko becomes Fire Lord at 16
He’s been kept out of the public eye most of his life but especially after his father burned his face, but his uncle insists now that he must hold social events and look for a partner as is expected of the Fire Lord
But Zuko is too insecure about his scar (thanks to Azula) to feel comfortable being the center of attention at events that are primarily a beauty contest such as the balls and events he is expected to host
It’s four years later now and the royals of the Southern Water Tribe have been invited once again to attend the Fire Nations international affairs ball.
The young Fire Lord has only ever thrown masquerade balls, this one seems to be no different. No one truly knows what he looks like
The southern prince is determined to find out why
