To Iris Barry Mexico City, 7 July 1948 Iris, I’m beginning to despair at not receiving a response from you to my letter. Although I’m not annoyed even so, because I’ve ended up responding with silence to friend’s letters myself in similar situations and not through lack of friendship, but… I don’t really know why. Besides, in your case, I’ve heard from the outlandish Edward James that you are going through something of a spiritual crisis and would not be in the right frame of mind to write back. I wanted to come to New York, but it would be an extravagance as I’m still here, after a year, failing every time I come up with an interesting film project. I am, on the other hand, frequently offered rubbish to direct, which I turn down. I should have left Mexico. But where would I go? The future is uncertain. But in spite of everything I’ve not lost hope. I would be happy if you liked Illegible, Son of a Flute! I’m not sure how successful it is. It’s not in fashion, because it’s not surrealist or existentialist. It’s completely new and prophetic. So we have to face the consequences. The de Noailles no longer exist. Mexico is appalling. Fanart comic of Barry Allen’s birthday, page 1: Barry is rigid in shock as Iris pushes him towards his surprise birthday party. Along the side are panels of each guest wishing him a happy birthday as bloodied flashbacks play behind them of the moments when Eobard Thawne had murdered them.

Page 2: Panel 1 is a close up shot of Barry with a horrified expression, beset by a red background reminiscent of the bloodied flashbacks. He manages to get out the words: “Thanks… everybody….” Panel 2 is Barry walking away from the guests, touching his face in distress. He says, “Sorry. Page 3: Panel 1 reveals Hal Jordan holding a box and wearing a smile. He says, “Looks like I’m right on time.” The red swarm surrounding Barry doesn’t seem to touch Hal. Panel 2 is Hal handing Barry the box, which contains a model plane, as he says, “Happy birthday, Barry.” Barry takes it in his hands with a worn but blank expression. Panel 3 is much the same with Barry unmoving as he’s processing the exchange. Panel 4 is Barry suddenly giving Hal a fond, sarcastic smile as he says, “Great gift, Hal. I especially liked it when I gave it to you for your birthday two years ago.” The red swarm gradually dissipates from each panel, clearing up entirely in the last one.

Page 4: Simplified doodles of Hal and Barry stand in the large, empty space of the page. Hal has one hand in his pocket and the other gesturing in explanation. His expression is embarrassed but good-humored as he says, “Really? You sure? I’ve been wanting to write to you for a while now, but life has been impossible, and I’m also only just recovering from a bad case of pneumonia. I’m very much afraid – unfortunately! – that as soon as you read this letter you will ‘dismiss’ me from the post of secretary of the International Federation for which I was so eminently grateful. The reason: it’s impossible for me to get to Paris in the next few months. And not only will I lose that position, but another one I was offered a while ago by Cine France, the company where Jean Grémillon works and with whom I was supposed to make some shorts and a feature in 1948. It would be very complicated to explain the reasons I’m obliged to delay my trip but believe me when I say they are pressing and wholly personal. It doesn’t even console me to think that I’ll have to make another film in Mexico, almost certain to be as trivial as the one I’ve just made. ‘Aztec’ films and public taste are truly lamentable and, for now at least, they are without hope of redemption. I’m confused and don’t really know what to say to you about the Federation. But I shall do the impossible to retain my position. Would it be possible to move the secretariat over here for a few months? I could pay for a bilingual secretary myself and receive work instructions by post. I would establish an office in my home. Or, alternatively, might a temporary secretary take over Paris? Either way, dear Iris, see what you can do, and be assured of my friendship and gratitude for everything you have already done. Heh — now I’m doing Barry and Iris…

So for anyone who cares, I was doing a lot of thinking about Iris and how to design/write her, and… *takes deep breath* okay, gonna be completely honest here… I find Iris to be boring in her basic description and original design. Come on, she’s basically just red-head Lois Lane. Same job, even. So, here’s what I was thinking: first off, I’m going back to her pre-52 situation where she was adopted by her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. West, and has two adoptive siblings. She, in this version, would be of Puerto Rican decent, while her adoptive family carries the red-head gene, thus keeping Wally West the lovable ginger we know him as. (Where my Young Justice peeps at?!) Secondly, her job. This kinda just came out of nowhere as I was designing the character, but: fashion designer. Her father is this brilliant scientist, yada yada yada, and she’s kinda sick of the nerdy stuff. She wants to pursue this avenue of art instead. But then, when she meets Barry, and he reveals his secret identity to her, she realises that if he’s gonna be a superhero, he’s gotta have a super suit, and while she brings the ace design skills, he brings the science skills that help keep the suit from, you know, burning up under immense friction. Iris, naturally, hates this at first “You’re tainting my fashion with your science!” XD but over time it brings them closer together, and in the future, she goes on to spearhead the super suit design for all kinds of supers.

So, darlings…. What do we think?
