Man, the Driver really wanted to be part of that family. So I drew it, how I imagine it would go if it had worked out.

Tell Me the Truth (Even If It's a Lie)
Fandom: Drive (2011) Word Count: 1.9K Relationships: Irene Gabriel x Standard Gabriel Tags: Autistic ! Driver, Asexual ! Driver, Implied/Referenced Cheating, Toxic Masculinity, During Canon, Ableist Language AO3 Link
Description: Standard has some questions for Driver that he isn't sure he can answer.
Things have been good with Irene. Almost too good, if you were to ask him. Driver doesn’t often get good things. He gets steady work, makes enough money to comfortably eat take out on the regular, and garners enough respect from his peers that nobody sticks their noses too far into his business. But this—the real, home cooked meals shared at a real dinner table with Irene and Benicio, the scenic drives with someone else’s laughter in his ears—this isn’t something he’s ever been given the opportunity to enjoy.
When Standard returned from prison, he’d been ready for it all to end. For the other shoe to drop. Irene had a husband and a son, and even though they never really did anything together that could constitute as more than friendly, he would understand if he was considered The Other Man. As much as it would sting for a while, he could go back to being just neighbors. But that’s not what happens. Irene still invites him over for dinners regularly. Is it partly his fault for accepting every time? Should he be more put off by the closed-lipped smiles Irene sends his way when Standard makes a comment about how “helpful” Driver was while he was inside?
He made those comments a lot. Driver isn’t sure what to make of it. He has never been the best at reading people, which is why he always appreciated how straightforward Shannon is. Even if Shannon could be a bit of a pushover sometimes, and an oversharer, he always says what he means. So many people weren’t like that. It's probably why he likes cars so much. Cars are an open book, all you had to do was be willing to take the time to read them.
When Standard spoke to him his tone was always curious and quiet but with an underlying edge. His smiles were crooked, and he would pause in random places mid-sentence. Driver could never tell when he wanted a response. Sometimes this led to Standard repeating himself at the dinner table, that or he’d ask Driver, “Hey, are you listening?”
“Mhm,” Driver would respond.
He hates when people ask if he is listening. He always was. He just didn’t always know when it was his turn to speak. This had been a common starter of arguments between him and his parents when he was a child, and it continued on into his youth in the foster system.
He’s always got his head in the clouds, is what his social worker said. He has a tough time connecting with his classmates because he is always daydreaming, his teachers explained during parent-teacher conferences. He never bothered to correct anybody. Nobody seemed to want to hear his side.
Over time, Driver picked up a few things. Habits that were deemed socially acceptable and that made people feel less uneasy around him. He learned that shaking hands with new acquaintances was expected, and he shouldn’t squeeze the other person’s palm too hard even if their grip felt like they were trying to grind his bones to dust. He also learned that people loved eye contact. He didn’t understand it really, it was hard to comprehend what others were saying when he had to focus so hard on holding their gaze. But he got it. Blink after they blink, look at them but don’t stare too hard or else you’ll scare them away. He’s still working on the last part.
Maybe that’s why he took to Irene so quickly. She never seemed to expect anything from him. She never commented on it when his gaze wandered up to the crown molding of her living room, or when he flexed his hands over and over to feel the drag of his leather gloves against his skin.
She was patient with him in the same way she was patient with Benicio. Benicio who wore Sillybandz up to his elbows and would regularly count each and every one, listing off the color and shape of them in the backseat of Driver’s car during rides. Who sometimes interrupted playtime to pace figurative tracks into the carpet of the living room while he hummed to himself the same wordless tune.
Once, Benicio got up from the dinner table halfway through their meal to go do his pacing-and-humming routine. Standard huffed and asked Irene, “Why the fuck is he doing that right now?”
That’s one of the only times Driver has ever seen Irene angry. But her anger was a different type compared to what he was used to. His own father’s anger was loud, and extended out to the nearest object. The anger of some directors on movie sets he’d worked on was colorful in language and targeted at unfortunate PA’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. But Irene’s anger was muted, tired. Like a rain cloud that had exhausted all of its moisture but was still just hanging around.
“You know why,” Irene snapped. That had been the end of it, but the rest of the meal was the kind of tense that even he could feel. For once, Driver didn’t stay after to help clean up.
He isn’t sure what compelled him tonight to stick around so late. Irene was already asleep since she had an opening shift at Denny’s in the morning, and Benicio had been put to bed a while ago. So it’s just him and Standard out in the living room, the only light coming from the small television set playing black and white Westerns. Driver sits at attention on one side of the couch, tugging relentlessly at a loose thread on the arm. Standard sits next to him nursing his third beer of the night, straddling two couch cushions and ignoring all sense of personal space. Every time he readjusts his knee knocks against Driver’s.
No one had explicitly asked him to leave, and he didn’t have any jobs lined up the next day. So he stayed, sat on the couch in this apartment that wasn’t his but that was so full of life that it practically screamed it from every corner. From the toys left on the living room rug to the small collection of houseplants arranged on a low shelf right by the door. This is somebody’s home, and he has never experienced anything quite like it.
Driver fishes a toothpick out of the breast pocket of his denim jacket. Enough time passes that he gnaws it down to the final nub and is about to get a new one when Standard speaks.
“So. Irene and Benicio really depend on you, huh?” The question at the end is Driver’s hint that Standard wants a response this time.
“I guess so.” Driver doesn’t take his eyes off the television even as a commercial break cuts into the film. This late it is an infomercial treasure trove: As-Seen-On-TV kitchen gadgets, life insurance ads, class action lawsuits.
Standard drops a heavy hand onto his thigh. His other hand lifts his beer to his lips, and he finishes the last of it in one go.
“You’re a good guy.”
A pause, no open ended question. Driver doesn’t answer. Standard’s hand doesn’t move from his thigh. He considers shaking it off himself as he tugs harsher at the loose thread on the couch’s arm. The commercial break ends, and the cowboys in the film resume their meandering journey on horseback through a sandy plane.
“Did you fuck her?” Standard keeps his voice low.
The thread on the couch arm snaps off in Driver’s hand. When he turns his head to the left, Standard is staring right at him.
“N–”
“I’d understand if you did. She’s a beautiful woman, and she’s got needs. Don’t worry.” The way his grip tightens around Driver’s thigh makes him wonder if he should, in fact, worry. “You can tell me.”
But there’s nothing to tell.
“We didn’t—”
The toothpick falls from his mouth and disappears between the couch cushions when Standard grips the back of Driver’s neck, pulling him in close and holding him there so he’s half bent at the waist. Driver could get out of it easily, he’s strong and knows how to fight. Not extremely well, but enough that he could make it hurt. He doesn’t move.
“Was she ever this close to you? Did she kiss you like she meant it?” Standard’s breath smells like beer and nicotine gum. Driver knows he’s been trying hard to quit since he got out of prison. “Are you in love with her? Huh, stunt guy, are you in love with my wife?”
Driver isn’t good with people, but he has a feeling this accusation goes a lot deeper than just Standard wanting to know if Irene has been cheating. He could tell the truth, that he has no attraction of any sort towards Irene. He really likes her and Benicio. But in an easy, familial way. It’s nice to have someone waiting for him when he gets back from work. To know that just down the hall there’s not one, but two people that would think twice if he were to disappear suddenly without a word.
With that being said Driver has never, not even once considered doing any of the things Standard is suggesting right now. Not just with Irene, but with anybody. He could tell Standard all of this, could try to put into words his relationship with the concepts of sex and romance, but he knows it won’t go over well. Standard wants a very specific answer that Driver can’t provide.
He’s entertained this for too long. Standard can’t react fast enough when Driver takes hold of his restraining arm and twists. He gasps like he expects pain, but Driver lets go as soon as he frees himself, rising to his feet and shoving Standard firmly down into the couch below him.
“I knew it,” Standard spits, glowering up at Driver. He knows nothing.
“You’re drunk.”
Driver reaches down and Standard tenses up expectantly, but he’s only reaching over to the other arm of the couch for the television remote. He clicks the off button and the cowboys shrink to blackness in the middle of a shootout with masked bandits. The living room is dark save for a hint of yellow light through the curtains from outside. It’s just enough for Driver to be able to see the outline of his own shoes as he finds the front door. He knows Standard stays lying there on the couch, can hear his hitched breathing right up until he shuts the door behind him.
It’s late. Some time past midnight but not quite close enough to four in the morning that anyone in the apartment complex has awoken for their early bird shifts. If he had to hazard a guess, he thinks Standard will probably pass out on that couch and stay there for the rest of the night. Irene might find him there as she heads into the kitchen before work, maybe she’ll even lay a blanket over his sleeping form. Driver really should try to get some rest.
But instead of walking those twenty steps to his apartment door, he continues right past it. Sticks his hands deep into his jacket pockets, rubs a thumb over the worn softness of his rabbit’s foot keychain as he shoulders open the door to the stairway. Headed down, down, all the way down to the parking garage.

Dialogue transcripts:
Panel 1
Godfrey: And do not tell Irene, but I am certainly going to commission you for a portrait of her.
Basil: I’d be glad to! As soon as I have completed Sir Murgatroyd’s, I am at your service.
Panel 2
Godfrey: Please, take your time. No matter when, it is a thrill to show your gift to the one you love!
Basil: Indeed, it is…
Panel 3
Irene: …Well, Mr. Gray, we shall keep that in mind. We do owe Mr. Hallward, as well as yourself, credit for giving us the first clue. Above all, we trust Lord Godalming having referred you.
Panel 4
Dorian: Ah, indeed, good old Basil…Anyway. I am glad Lord Godalming has put my little joke behind him. He’s a bit of a humorless sort, sometimes.
Panel 5
Mina: Oh, rest assured, Arthur is quite mirthful.
Panel 6
Mina: He does, however, have his limits when it comes to love.
Mina (white text): We, however, shall suffer no mockery of Love.
Panel 7
Background text (left side): “How long will you like me? Till I have my first wrinkle, I suppose.” “I love her, and I must make her love me.” “I have had the arms of Rosalind around me, and kissed Juliet on the mouth.”
Background text (right side): “I would give my soul for that!” “To-night she is Imogen, and to-morrow night she will be Juliet.” “When is she Sibyl Vane?” “Never.” “You have spoiled the romance of my life. How little you can know of love, if you say it mars your art! Without your art, you are nothing.”
Background text (white): Mockery of Love (x3)
Panel 8
Mina: …Is everything quite alright, Mr. Gray?
Panel 9
Dorian: Oh! Yes—I was just saying—We would be delighted to keep in touch with such…ahem…intriguing company. But for now I am afraid we must bid you adieu, erm, if you’ll excuse me…
Panel 10
Basil: Dorian! Are we leaving already?

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 254
We start where we left off, Smithy is outside with Kerry in his arms, bleeding from a gunshot wound. The alarm is sounded inside the station as Smithy shouts for those who are coming out to see what has happened to "take cover - shots fired!"
In his office, Adam breaks away from June to look outside and sees the chaos, running downstairs with June and Gina following too with assorted extras. Rob shouts someone's shouting at the front of the station and Adam stops everyone running down the stairs. He tells June to get an ambulance and asks Gina to call for SO/CO19. Gina starts down the stairs when she hears Smithy might have been shot, but she is ordered back up by Adam to sort out for armed support.
Smithy shouts over that they need an ambulance for Kerry, confirming to Adam he's fine afterwards. He keeps trying to get Kerry to open her eyes and look at him but she's rapidly losing blood. Smithy shouts again for an ambulance as Reg scoots the first aid box to him. Adam orders all officers to stay away from the station if they're outside the building and direct their attention to the flats and office directly opposite the station. Adam delays the ambulance that's at the end of the road until he knows that it's all clear.
On the roof Gabriel is desperatley scrabbling around to gather all evidence from the scene, including the bullet cartridges and to get away with the gun as quickly as possible. One falls down the drainpipe and as he runs round he finds access blocked by a large gate. He hides the gun in his patrol car and speeds off, driving erratically, narrowly avoiding hitting an old man. He drives into the station carpark, greeting Steve normally.
Smithy shouts again for the ambulance and shouts for Adam to let it in now because they're rapidly running out of time. SO19 (now CO19) appear and Smithy assures Kerry she's going to be fine, the ambulance is coming. Eventually she's loaded into it, Smithy accompanying her to the hospital. When taken through, Kerry quickly flatlines. Smithy is forced out of the room and has to watch through a window whilst the staff try to ressucitate her.
In her office June is in tears. Gabriel calls to her and June sobs 'she's so young, who'd do such a thing?' as Gabriel draws back - ironically into shadow.
With no response to any of the CPR, the doctors have to call time of death for Kerry - Smithy breaks down. He clings to her hand and sobs over her body when they're left alone.
The usually noisy bustling station is completely silent as Adam walks through to the briefing room, having to tell everyone - CID, Uniform and Dean and Marilyn - that Kerry has died.
The 3 senior officers are in Adam's office to discuss what happens next as Smithy, bubbling over with anger and grief, bursts in the door. Gina instantly goes to his side and tries to comfort and calm him, telling him it's not the time. Adam agrees to let him have his say - but in private. Gina reluctantly has to leave the room with Neil.
Smithy rages at Adam, accusing him of negligence for delaying the ambulance and insisting it's David Radford behind the shooting, demanding that he is brought in immediatley. Adam refuses, tries to calm him down and insists he go and bag his uniform for forensics and, if he can't continue the day in a calm manner, to go home.
Smithy literally barges his way through staff to go and change, Gabriel following him. He asks if he can drive Smithy home and if Kerry said anything at the end. Smithy calls him a vulture and tells him to get out of his face after venting. June asks Gabriel what he'd said to Smithy and Gabriel mockingly replies 'the man's losing it, isn't he?'
MIT's DCI Morell arrives and is brought up to speed. The Radford's at the likely target and Adam arranges for Ken to talk to her to explain the situation. She wants to talk to Smithy first.
Smithy is out of the station and looking for someone to blame. He makes his way to the Radfords Club and bangs on the door, demanding David come out to speak to him. Smithy spots him being driven away from the club with Irene and races back to his patrol car to follow.
Adam stops June asking Gabriel what is going on and what he's hiding by asking if she's seen Smithy. He offers to return to his office to discuss what they were talking about but before he can, Ken appears to tell him CO19 have found the location where they believe the shots were fired from - both important bits of news for Gabriel.
Gabriel reminds June Kerry is dead and can't speak out, he reminds her also of his threats and that she'd also be throwing her career away. He then volunteers to help CO19 secure the building and June tells her to take Andrea with him. Neil tries to stop her going incase it's not safe, but she tells him it's too late for his concern. At the scene, Gabriel simply slips to the gate he couldn't get through before, trying to remove the bullet casing - thankfully he's stopped by Lance's boyfriend, the CO19 sgt, who orders him to get a CSE down instead.
Smithy overtakes the Radfords and demands David get out the car, thrusting him back against the roof as he accuses him of killing Kerry. Rob appears and manages to get him to stop assaulting David - much to the surprise of himself and Irene!
With Smithy unavailable at the moment, June is interviewed by Rowan. She doesn't know of any enemies - purposely not mentioning Gabriel.
Irene wants to speak to Gina, turning up at the station. Yvonne is horrified to see her strutting through the station to Gina's office, evil eyeing her with Steve. Irene tells Gina about Smithy charging through the streets after their car - and Gina quickly dismisses PC!Extra so they can talk in private. Irene assures her that David had nothing to do with it. She says she knows that Smithy had a thing for Kerry and he's upset. "Meaning?" "You look after your boy, Gina, and I'll look after mine." ❤
Gabriel removes the gun from the back of his patrol car, stopping for a word with Mark, Lance's boyfriend, whilst holding it. He apologies for what happened at the scene. He then bumps into June and Rowan whilst holding it before hiding it in his locker. Smithy and Rob arrive and he tells Smithy they're all worried about him before leaving the room. Rob tries to comfort him, reminding him that even if they did get David and put him away forever - it wouldn't stop it hurting.
Ken tells Rowan that she's wasting time looking into Kerry's friends and colleagues and that it's likely to be a random cop hater or similar. Rowan tells him they need to get inside Kerry's life and find out exactly what was going on. They want all her phone calls and messages... June looks worried. She left a message on Kerry's phone asking her not to tell anyone about Gabriel.
Smithy sits in the canteen having to listen to assorted gossip happening around him - a press release, someone close to her doing it, flooding the scene with manpower etc etc. Rob comes to find him, telling him that Gina is looking for him. Smithy works himself up during their chat and Gina has to physically comfort him. Why won't anyone give the poor boy a hug? Well.. Gina... anyone else he'd shove away.
He hands Gina his warrant card, "Can't do it anymore." he says, walking straight out before she can speak. Gina angrily throws it onto her desk.
Rowan plays June her message and and asks her what her comment about 'ruining careers' means. She says she was having a disagreement with someone and she wanted to take it further. She insists that she doesn't know who it is that she was having the disagreement with.
At the press conference, Bruce asks if the murder is linked with the other serial sniper shootings. They say they're not ruling anything out.
Andrea is played her message and she confesses that Kerry was angry with her because they'd been having a disagreement. She explains she was in a relationship that is now over and Kerry found out, embarassing the person involved. She's allowed out the interview room and goes to meet her editor, Bruce, in front of the station. She wants out. He refuses. The next day, Neil restarts their affair.
The gun from the other three shootings has been confirmed to be the gun that was used to kill Kerry from the bullet casing Gabriel 'found'.
June tells Gabriel that everything is okay, she didn't mentioned names in her message. She then asks him where he was when Kerry was shot. "Anyone would think you're accusing me of murdering Kerry."
Gabriel is almost out of the station with the gun as Rowan calls him back. She asks Gabriel if he and Kerry were close - he says they were as close as any two members of a team could be. She watches him with interest as he walks away.
Outside the station now the front is open again Smithy and Marilyn lay flowers. Marilyn offers to talk if he needs someone to listen. Smithy can't speak, he sits outside, just staring at the area that he and Kerry were after she was shot - and at the flowers outside. Gina appears and finally he starts to open up. "If I could have put myself in front of that bullet...." "I know, cos that's the kind of man that you are. And that's why I'm not accepting your warrant card so you can come and pick it up later on." He starts to cry after she wants to send him home and FINALLY she gives him a hug.
Steve reports that a police car almost dropped a man down in an area that noone from Sun Hill would have been at yet. Gabriel claims it was probably Barton St. "I was on the Coal Lane Estate." "Allright, chill out - noone's accusing you!" Steve assures him before going to tell MIT. Gabriel visits the man who made the complaint and confuses him, telling him it was a joyrider in a grey car and not a police car.
Sun Hill know what the sniper was (ex military) and where he was and what he used, Suzie claims it won't be long before they know who he is. There is a difference with this shooting however though. Instead of just the one precision shot there were at least two shots made. The victim was a police officer rather than a criminal - however the common link of all other suspected sniper victims is still in place - Sun Hill Station.
Suzie then goes to find Gabriel and takes him to an MIT interview. Rowan asks why Gabriel has been lying to her. She knows the truth about him and Kerry. "Why didn't you tell us you'd been sleeping with her?" "I think you've made a mistake." "When Kerry died she was carrying three months pregnant. Your baby. When Kerry died she was carrying your son."
