Long, long ago, in a time of war and fear, a young girl was born into a humble family. There was a father, a mother, a brother, and horrors beyond the fields of their farm. Sometimes the eldest ones looked tired, but the little girl was happy just by having them. Things began to change radically in a way her naive mind was unable to understand.

Father came changed one day, mother was gone, and pain and loss seemed constant, until suddenly everyone treated them nice, they were kind, respectful and they didn't had to work in the farm anymore. A brother was there, protecting them and caring for the family, and for the people in the land, he was the new lord. They were as safe as they could be, but everyone was left hollowed, for their father was long gone.

From the new garden of hope a rose escaped, in the search of the man she used to look up to, the man she wanted to make proud of, the man they all once called father. She believed he was alive, and well, he needed to be with all of them, but nowhere to be found he was. Only rumours, only legends. The young flower set on a self quest for the family not knowing all kind of shadows lurked behind her.

Coming back after a few years, the flower bloomed into a young woman, with a gaze enough to catch your breath. With a light enough to attract the dark. The shadow that reached her spoke softly, and gently, offered a warmth she had long forgotten. A promise to never break. She was strong and smarter, yes, but the hole and pain in her chest was too much to endure and in a creature of the night she turned.

Oh, dear Rose, if only she remembered everything upon waking up, lost and confused, she accepted her new life yet always missing something even then, the feeling of finding something or someone never left.

An introductory post to riakhou, the species

Riakhou are semi-aquatic, carnivorous sophonts currently living on a couple different planets and habitable moons.

Most of their population is found on Wuvum, a tidally locked planet orbiting the dwarf star Nêf Hàkko. The second largest riakhou population is on a located around 3,5 light years away waterworld called l’Noua. L’Noua is in the same star system as the human homeworld. The two species made first contact many years ago, and currently the worlds are in contact with one another (albeit waiting at least 7 years — in Human Standard Years — for an answer is a bit inconvenient. Faster than Light communication, let alone travel, has not yet been invented).

The colour of riakhou skin depends not so much on genetics as it does on the chemicals in water they develop in as larvae. Freshly after hatching riakhou larvae are clear and transparent.

Their evolutionary ancestors were amphibious cave-dwellers domesticated and genetically modified by another alien species. Some of the most notable changes made to them include: making them seeing, (Fun fact. In the oldest riakhou languages the word for sight literally means ‘alien sense’), having “cuter” limbs and longer back/torso, being smaller, less venomous, less fertile, more docile and spending more time on land than their ancestors.

Due to the fact they were essentially pets, riakhou can exhibit a wide range of phenotypes, including variations in patterns, crest shapes and sizes, as well as plumage (as in body plumage being present in addition to featherfins).

After “prototype” riakhou were either abandoned or deliberately rewilded, they started developing their own civilisation, eventually contacting other species and taking to the stars. (More lore on that in another post).

While growing up something fell off, something almost unnatural. Beliefs, behaviours and dreams were all different than that of her family, always so strict, always so distant, almost far away from her while standing beside her.

In time the little bird found connection with nature itself, more than that of people, she found amusing things the other kids didn't, and before the little bird knew it, it learned the truth of the hidden wings.

The girl discovered she was changed, her family wasn't hers, her name, her clothes even, her belief of self wasn't hers.

When the fae that came to aid her with the truth, the so called family rejected her forever, she wasn't going to cry, she wasn't going to let them know. Emotions brought the best of her and it could've come with a horrible accident if it wasn't for the fae that helped her.

Eventually she changed her name, mindset and fled, up to a town where she could be free and start again. Now, ten years later, she understands better the world she belongs too, and believes the love of humans to be so weak and fake. It disgusts her. What matters only is to protect their own and if someone were to mess with them, nothing than a little dust can't deal with. It is said stories are build with such mischief.
