URGENT: Congress about to pass a mass censorship and surveillance bill under the guise of "protecting children"

The Senate has been in a "do something!" mode regarding children's online safety. They're using this as an excuse to push for widespread internet censorship and surveillance. The EARN IT Act, has a slimmer chance of passing with widespread opposition and some senators saying they won't vote for it. TLDR;The real threat is actually KOSA (s.1409), the Kid's Online Safety Act, which will mass censor and surveill the entire internet by giving all 50 state attorney generals the power to remove content that is "harmful" for kids, and force you to upload your govt ID online to access the internet. I'll explain how it works below the action items but it's absolutely urgent that anyone who likes having a free and open internet fights back. It's all hands on deck, because this has so much public support it's insane:

The opposition is getting absolutely drowned online. Dove has nearly 100k signatures to push for KOSA. Influencers on tiktok are pushing for this without ever having read the bill. Fucking Lizzo is sponsoring it. If you have twitter, reddit, tiktok, are in any community, SPREAD THE WORD, PLEASE.

HOW KOSA WORKS

First, KOSA pressures platforms to install filters that would wipe the net of anything deemed “inappropriate” for minors. This means instructing platforms to censor. We saw how these filters impacted websites firsthand with tumblr in 2018, with not only blocking all adult content but also sfw queer content such as suicide hotlines, art archives, wiping out entire blogs because they had queer fandom related posts, etc. Places that already use content filters have restricted important information about suicide prevention and LGBTQ+ support groups. KOSA would spread this kind of censorship to every corner of the internet. And who gets to decide what is and isn't harmful for minors? Oh don't worry, just every single state attorney general and the FTC, which is appointed by the president. You know, the same attorney generals that just banned gender-affirming healthcare under the guise that it "ruins mental health" of minors. This is why the Heritage Foundation was one of the first to sponsor the bill because they can use it to censor trans content, and Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is it's co-author.

Second, KOSA would ramp up the online surveillance of all internet users by forcing websites to use age verification and parental monitoring tools. Yup, that's right. Now every single person who wants to access the internet has to upload their govt ID online to third party apps that get hacked all the time. You queer in a red state? You undocumented? You an activist? Have fun getting all your online activity and metadata attached to your govt ID.  

Over 90+ human and LGBT rights groups agree that KOSA is dangerous and updates to the 2023 version won’t and can’t address the big problems with the bill. This bill has MASSIVE bipartisan support, and the authors Blumenthal and Blackburn (yes, that Blumenthal that's pushing the EARN IT Act, and who also sponsored the RESTRICT Act and SOPA/PIPA if you remember) are using the tragedy of mothers who lost their kids to online harassment and young adults who've been traumatized online to lobby for it, and got Dove the company to use a bunch of influencers to push for this under the guise it prevents eating disorders...I wish I was lying. There are already 30 co-sponsors.

It is all hands on deck. I'm dead serious when I say if this bill is passed it is the beginning if not end of the open and free internet.

I think Cater, Ortho, and Idia make edits and little music videos of yuu, especially if your yuu is a badass who is actually involved in the situations happening around campus and handles their shit. Cater has some on his main account that he can pass off as just showing off his friend, but he has a secret account that is much more focused on edits; his edits are mainly yuu looking beautiful or generally cool and/or the perfect SO. Idia has a secret account where he edits yuu (as well as fanboys about them like their an idol or big Internet personality); his edits are mostly those dramatic ass ones from Yuu fighting the overblots and looking like an anime hero throughout it all, but he also dabbles in the ones where yuu is just hot as hell. Ortho mainly just helps Idia with his account because he has fun showing off his friend and wants to make use of all the clips he is constantly making of Yuu. Almost the entirety of NRC is following at least one of the accounts, and will send in clips they have of yuu looking hot/beautiful/cool/badass if they ever get any. Yuu doesn’t know their phone supports magicam, but the ghosts secretly set up lives or videos of yuu working in ramshackle to help the edit economy. Yuu is unaware of all this.

I don't really use a bunch of social media? So I would find it really weird if people were doing this for someone who doesn't have a social media presence already. That being said, I could ABSOLUTELY see Yuu being something of a school myth or cryptid in the mind of most of the student body, so fan accounts, edits, and just weird posts on message boards/magicam make a lot of sense even if Yuu themselves aren't super active on any of those.

Cater is happy posting about them as a friend, but he totally has a bunch of accounts that aren't his main he uses to stalk people keep up with trends. His Yuu edits page was one of those accounts that he started messing around with one day when he was bored (and perhaps... plagued by longing), he finds it sort of sad how much it took off. Cater, better than anyone, understands the edits he is making aren't real and that the appeal of being the new person isn't something that sparks long lasting relationships. But it is so very nice to dream about... there's some catharsis in knowing others find you as beautiful as he does. Not that he ever thought he was blind, he just likes hearing people say he's right.

Ortho feels like the one who would start making the edits first. Idia only starts because he knows thinks he can do better than these posers, seriously this person fights overblots and the biggest account is just doing boyfriend asmr with them. Lame! He will show them what a true idol stan can do. He insists he's just doing it ironically but he takes it too seriously for that to be true. Ortho likes showing off his friend! And using his perceived innocence to get good footage for his fancams.

Yuu isn't aware of this because they are too focused on making fancams of Grim. No one knows that one Grim stan account is them.

I've been wanting to make this post for a while so now that I'm on mid-sem break, I will. Let's talk Shigaraki and sex.

So, let's get the big question out of the way. Is Shigaraki a virgin?

I think, yes. 100%

However, that is not to say that he is an innocent, oblivious, 'omg what is sex? uwu' baby villain. This guy literally lives in a bar, in a seedy part of the city, and hangs around with criminals. He knows about sex - I daresay he knows quite a bit about it. Besides which, we see in-canon that he has a phone and a PC and access to the internet, so he's hardly sheltered (though, he's definitely sheltered in regard to actual real-life socialisation, but that's another story).

Regardless, I stand by my assertion that he is a virgin.

Exhibit A: Shigaraki is shown very overtly to hate 'basically everything'. Correct me if I'm wrong, but everything encompasses sex/romance/intimacy. His character, especially at the beginning of the story, is prickly, quick-to-frustration, and sort of single-minded. He is driven to complete one narrow goal set by AFO that he believes he wants: to kill All Might. I believe prior to our introduction to Shigaraki, he was much the same, and thus did not seek out sex. Given his hostile and loner-guy nature at the start of the series, I doubt he would have had much in the way of propositions on his occasional solo trip to the mall.

Exhibit B: whilst I have seen it theorised that AFO introduced Shigaraki to sex via getting him a sex worker to 'satisfy his natural urges', personally, I think this theory is unlikely. This is because everything AFO does is to create discomfort and frustration in Shigaraki's life in order to stoke his rage (the guy literally has him wearing dead hands despite the fact that they make Shigaraki simultaneously feel calm and like throwing up). Thus, I doubt AFO would have encouraged Shigaraki to indulge in sexual relief - or any kind of relief - at all. I doubt he would have even explained the birds and the bees and likely pawned that job off onto the doctor or the internet if Shigaraki asked any questions.

So, we've established that Shigaraki's a virgin, and an ultimate hasn't-even-kissed-anyone virgin at that. But does he want to have sex? That big question number 2.

Honestly, I don't think he much cares for it.

It's odd to say given the multitude of what is essentially sex-addict-Shiagraki headcanons out there, but I truly think he doesn't really think about sex. Shigaraki's sex drive is probably quite low. Now, since I'm taking an evidence based approach here, lets go for the obvious evidence that points to him not having much interest in sex and that is the fact that if he was interested in it, Horikoshi would not shy away from showing it. My Hero Academia is not a manga that shies away from the odd bit of fan service or the pervy character. Mineta is - unfortunately - living proof of this. And he's not the only one. Horikoshi writes many of his characters displaying sexual attraction/interest/engagement/awareness at one point or another. So, logically, if Shigaraki was a character who was interested in sex, Horikoshi would show that. Since he doesn't, I can only conclude that sex isn't really a big deal to Shigaraki, or at the very least, not something he thinks about enough for it to show up on-screen.

Now, do I believe that Shigaraki has zero sexual interest? No. I think he's watched porn before, and probably even jerks it every now and then. But do I think he would actively seek out sex? Nah. Honestly, I don't even think he'd go along with sex unless it's with someone he's got a pre-established emotional connection to that's been building for a long time.

Like everything with Shigaraki, I think sex would be intense. By this I mean, he wouldn't be the type to have a casual one-night-stand or a friends-with-benefits fling. If he's in it, his heart's in it. Because he is so angry and destructive, Shiagraki often gets mischaracterised as heartless and deliberately cruel (this is a conversation for a separate post), but in reality, he cares a lot about certain things and puts his all into them. With sex, he would have to care about the who for the what to matter.

In conclusion - Shigaraki's well aware that BDSM doesn't stand for Bible Discussion/Study Meeting, but he's also a virgin loser who would not pin you up against the wall and have his way with you in a dark alley.

I just made myself sad thinking that maybe everybody in the show thinks Tommy is cool because of his numerous hobbies but in reality for him it's just a means to fight the loneliness 😔

Tommy has the time to have so many hobbies, because he doesn't have a family or close friends to spend his free time with...

We don't see other characters have so many hobbies and they all have a family to take care of or friends to spend time with.

In just a few episodes, we learnt and personally saw that Tommy has a lot of hobbies (flying, martial arts, basketball, movies, cars, trivia etc...) and doesn't have a close "family" (either be a blood family or a work family, he said it himself), maybe he make sure to have his free time occupied to not feel the loneliness in his mind and in his home...

He apparently sees family and friends as really important, he said it himself twice that he wished he had such close coworkers/friends/family, and he also just prove it in just the few episodes of season 7 where we saw him risk his life for coworkers he didn't talk with that much anymore, spending time and sharing hobbies with a man he just met (Eddie), going to the apartment of Buck, a man he barely knew just to see if he was okay, coming straight up after a big fire to be here for his boyfriend but also his friend's wedding etc...

We say that Eddie looked so happy to have a new friend but Tommy was too for sure, his smile and body language when Eddie arrives at harbor or when he is with him at the basketball court says it all.

We can even think back to years ago when Tommy wanted to be accepted in the "boys club" by Gerrard and Sal etc... Maybe he wanted to not feel excluded because of his sexual orientation but surely he also wanted to just have friends and finally have a real connection with someone, something he didn't have with his real family and apparently not with the army too. But then he must have finally have that with chimney and hen but not with his new coworker at harbor. Not that he don't like them but sometimes you need more, and like he said he wanted a family like the 118 is. So maybe after leaving the 118, and not being as much close to chimney and hen than he was, and not feeling a family bond with harbor, he began some new hobbies to fill the lack of a social life...

And maybe that's why, during him and Buck conversation before their first kiss, he looked a little surprised when Buck said he found him so cool and that he wanted the harbor tour just to get to know him and was surprised when Buck admit to trying to get his attention. Maybe it's because he began to wonder if Buck wanted more than friendship but I also think that the look in Tommy eyes makes him look sad at first (and I know it's maybe just a Lou thing) so maybe it's also because he doesn't understand Buck... Why would this man soooo surrounded by love, the most important thing in the world for Tommy, think having hobbies is that important ? For Tommy having hobbies is just a means to not feel the loneliness and not something he does to be cool or get other people's attention.

It's also something that differentiates him from Buck. Buck clearly loves to know things and will learn from books and the internet but never actively practice any related activities (at least not that I can remember, tell me if I'm wrong) because he doesn't have time to, his free time mostly being taken by spending it with his sister and brother in law, his niece, his close friends, Eddie and Christopher etc...

But now that Tommy and Buck are together, they can complement each other and Buck already had to spend time enjoying some new hobbies with Tommy like muay Thai and flying and Tommy isn't lonely anymore so he can enjoy more of his free time with the friends and family he wished for.

Tommy's hobbies are still a means to fight the loneliness but not in a way to keep his mind out of it but in a way to just spend time with his loved ones.

Twitch Streamer Tommy

ONE:

I think it started out as a joke tbh. Like one of his friends was visiting and saw Tommy's truly ridiculous set up for it, and was like "Dude you should stream this" and Tommy thought "Eh, fuck it" and did. And it picked up fast and does surprisingly well, so he just keeps doing it.

It's big enough that it's a little extra income, but not so huge that he's a Big Name re: gaming streamers or anything. He's got some friends in Europe or something that help him mod the chat. People keep telling him to make t shirts, but that sounds like too much work and he's already fucking busy, so he doesn't.

He does at one point get a 'remove before flight' t shirt at an air show, and wears it on a stream one time and takes it off before takeoff, and people go fucking nuts.

TWO:

I think Tommy would recognize Buck's handle as someone who is frequently in chat and is pretty active, but I don't know if he'd make the connection about the handle name actually being Evan, without Buck saying something. Tommy does interact with the chat a lot, but he is also actively flying while he streams. It's a lot of glancing over, seeing a question, and answering it. In Tommy's mind the chat is kind of it's own entity, instead of a bunch of individual people.

THREE:

Buck hasn't really conceptualized that what he has on Tommy is a crush. He just thinks Tommy's cool. And then he's suddenly being flown into a hurricane by the man, and it turns out Tommy actually flying is somehow hotter more interesting than Tommy playing a video game. Because this is real. This is actually life or death, and Tommy's a fucking excellent pilot and Buck is. He's just flustered. About it.

Buck's trying to find a delicate way to be like "ARE YOU REMOVEB4FLIGHT?" even though they're on the tail end of the cruise debacle, but Eddie beats him to it. Eddie just asks Tommy point blank "Do you play video games online? I think my son watches your show" and then Tommy gets flustered. Obviously pleased and surprised, because he's never been ~recognized IRL~ and the first time he has, it's by a peer because his kid watches. There's something really exciting about that.

I think it's Christopher that tells Tommy that Buck also watches the streams and how it's a Thing They Do Together. (Chris, of course, gets to learn how to play flight simulator on Tommy's ridiculous setup) And Tommy's like "huh" because Evan didn't say anything. Buck is stewing in jealousy because how come Eddie gets to hang out with the cool firefighter pilot and Chris, instead of him? Eddie doesn't even care about the streams >:(

I don't think Buck asks for a tour, he hears about the Vegas trip after the fact and is just green with envy. But I do think the basketball game still happens, and Tommy comes to Buck's apartment to clear the air. Because Tommy now knows that Buck is vaguely a fan, and Buck knows that Tommy knows, I don't think there'd be a smooch.

The added aspect of Entertainer and Fan would make it kind of weird, they're not necessarily on a level playing field (yet). Buck isn't starstruck per se, but he's also not just another firefighter Tommy met on a job. Tommy sticks to assuming that yes, Buck is jealous, but that it's a combination of Eddie being his bestie and Tommy having minor amounts of internet fame.

BUT THEN they do start hanging out, both with and without Eddie and/or Chris, and become friends. And Tommy starts to look at Evan and go "...is he?" and Buck is oblivious because he's hanging out with Tommy and Tommy's so cool and yeah he's got a good ass but it's not like Buck is staring at it a lot (he is) and Eddie is looking at the two of them dance around each other and going "HUH. INTERESTING."

FOUR:

I think it's just a fun concept in general, and I do love it when there's more of a slow burn when characters get together. Friends to lovers is *chef's kiss* and all that jazz.

I did think about including snippets of Tommy interacting w/ the chat, but ultimately scrapped those because it seemed like too much extra stuff. But I think at least once a stream, something like this happens:

Chat 1: so is there a Mrs. B4FLIGHT?

Tommy: *snorts and starts laughing*

Mod 1: no

Tommy: "I'm not interested in women."

Mod 2: dumb comments will result in getting blocked

Chat 2: you don't look gay

i am not in any way trying to justify or downplay the severity of the social media censorship. it's a significant problem. but... you don't need to stay on a platform and constantly wring your hands over what phrase they're going to ban next. it's directionless. just leave.

if you come across blatant censorship, either cut your losses, move onto a different platform and get the app off your phone or you can try to muddle through it. but don't linger and wait for it to get better. it probably won't. whatever social media isn't already compromised very well may be in the next 4 years. you're not going to be able to counter-message against this and you're probably exposing yourself to needless risk by continuing to use the compromised platform.

the fact is that activism and community organizing has existed as long as civilization itself. the first labor strike can be dated to 1157 BC in Ancient Egypt. unpaid laborers staged a sit-in against Pharaoh Ramesses III. and in the end, they got their wages. it's also believed that basic "human rights" laws, although as the article points out that is stretching the definition, have existed since 1750 BC in Babylon. the big social media companies have given us the benefits of being able to organize faster and at a much wider scale, but you should have never, ever become dependent on them.

misinformation is dangerous. governmental censorship can also present an obvious danger to a society's ability to determine fact from fiction. but you would be mistaken if you think that this is, or has ever been, unique to social media, or even a new phenomenon.

this should be your wake up call that, Google, Netflix, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft alone generate 57% of the world's internet traffic. 6 corporations own 90% the world's media. and two even bigger corporations own 90% of those corporations.

the house of cards could totally collapse overnight and you'd be powerless to stop it. the ship has unfortunately sailed on corporate media conglomerates. you should call out misinformation when you see it, but at some point you have to organize to stop it.

if you want the censorship to stop (hopefully because you understand it's a prelude to something far worse), the actions you are going to have to take will be offline in the real world. you've obviously noticed a pattern with social media. assume it's all been poisoned.

that said, i'll go ahead and add my usual sort of disclaimer when giving writing advice -- this is how i interpret these characters, and it's highly unlikely that everyone will agree with all aspects of my understanding of them. feel free to take/leave whichever pieces of this advice suit you personally!

(after all, i don't even take my own advice to heart all the time. there are always exceptions, especially in fandom / fic, where the guiding principle should always just be "do whatever is most fun!")

for writing shen yuan,

he's an asshole! i often see sy portrayed as kind and innocent as a heavenly saint, but this is the same guy who delighted in harassing the writer of his (not) favorite book. he's argumentative and a bit mean, and he enjoys being those things, particularly when it makes him feel as if he's "won" something. to write this part of his character,

within his own narration, i'll include casual insults directed at anyone/thing that causes him a mild inconvenience

in conversations between him and someone he dislikes, i try to ensure he's never the one to disengage first unless something forces him to, instead writing him as always wanting to get the last word in.

whatever quips/insults/methods of revenge he enacts, i try to ensure that they match his own image of who he is. when he's sqq, his bitchiness doesn't "win" anything unless the way he enacts it fits within his image as an aloof immortal. even when he's a NEET in his original world, he has an image of himself that he wants to maintain (i.e. "winning" on the internet means "people believe you're right.")

he can be sweet, but it's an attitude reserved for people/things he likes very much. even then, it only reinforces his bitchiness; i try to always write him as most mean when someone is attacking something he likes.

he's conditionally oblivious, not completely so. although oblivious!sy is super fun, he's really only "oblivious" to things that would be inconvenient for him to know/understand, and even then, it's less that he doesn't notice and more that he doesn't want to notice. to write this part of his character,

i still have him notice whatever is happening, but within his own narration he'll complete whatever mental gymnastics are necessary to reach a more convenient conclusion than the obvious one.

i try to portray these mental gymnastics as increasingly frantic / borderline panicked depending on how big the jump is between "what is easy for sy to think" and "what the reality is." kinda as if sy can tell that his own excuses are falling apart in real time and is desperately trying to cover it up.

a lot of "what is easy for sy to think" lies in his comphet, but not all of it. it's also easy for him to think that he's right - so when he makes a reasonable assumption, and then he learns new information that disproves that assumption, i usually take that as a chance to throw in some mental gymnastics, too.

when he does finally allow himself to understand, it's often because he's reached the tipping point of "what is easy for me to think is now actively harmful to me or someone i care about." i'll often write sy doing his mental backflips for chapters on end without any sign of stopping, but then very suddenly come to a halt and recognize the truth when he's faced with irrefutable proof that his assumptions are making things Worse (i.e., binghe is crying).

his motivation for chasing after a sy of his own lies primarily in the emotion of "this isn't FAIR" as opposed to a genuine desire to have a happy life with sy specifically. it isn't fair that he got a cruel sqq while bingmei got one that grew to care for him, it isn't fair that bingmei is happier in his life than bingge is in his ""objectively"" more accomplished life, etc etc. to write this part of his character,

he'll expect sy to treat him just like sy!sqq treated bingmei right out the gate, because sy doing so would make things "fair" for bingge. when sy fails to meet these expectations, i'll write bingge experiencing the frustration of a child denied the treatment their sibling got, not the distress of a man being rejected by someone he loves.

he has to learn to want sy romantically, and learn how that's different from just vaguely wanting "whatever bingmei had that i didn't." when he reaches this point, i'll try to write some key change in the way he treats sy in order to show that his mental framing of the situation has changed. often, i change the way bingge addresses sy at this point (i.e. calling sy with a diminutive instead of by his name).

he has very firm ideas about what is "good," and very little of them actually match what he wants. by the time bingge reached a position of power, he'd spent a lot of time reinforcing particular ways of thinking and acting because they were what kept him alive during difficult times. to write this part of his character,

he'll lash out at anything that has the chance to hurt him, because striking first is how he's survived. bc of this, i'll write him as very quick to lash out at sy or run away from their relationship if he gets even the slightest hint that sy might have messed up somewhere... but only after bingge has grown to like sy enough that he's emotionally vulnerable to what sy might do to him.

before that point, i'll write him as just mildly frustrated that this nice new toy he found isn't playing with him correctly.

he was only respected and listened to after he became powerful and scary, so he'll resist showing any other side of himself. i'll often use this as a point of conflict, highlighting how 'what makes a good romantic partner' has very little overlap with 'what makes a scary emperor' and forcing bingge to hesitantly change his habits.

What do you think the characters in After Dark sound like? I know it's a weird question, but I love imagining what they sound like when they talk haha

Oh, I love this question!! Thank you for asking it! I don't often get the chance to think about it because my imagination tends to work in a very descriptive, written way, and I have to actively make an effort to picture sounds and voices. So this really helped me do that ☺

Michael: he has a deep voice for a 17-year-old. If he were a singer, he'd probably be a bass. In the mornings he has a somewhat gravelly voice, a detail that pops up again when he's starting to feel exhausted. Since he's very charismatic, he's able to modulate his voice attractively when he has to... But you can still notice the tension in his voice when he's very stressed, just a crack here or there.

Abigail: her voice is mature, pleasantly calm but kind of husky, like she's always tired but still manages to sound warm and comforting. She speaks slowly and deliberately, like she's really thinking about what she's saying, especially around younger people—she's got a way of talking to them that's super gentle, almost like a big sister. Still, when she needs to be firm, she can be really firm. If she loses her baby, her voice gets less warm and way... darker.

Male Kay: his voice is kind of unpredictable—he's got a light baritone base, but it will pitch up when he's nervous or blabbering too much (and let's be real, that happens fairly often lol). His speech is all over the place—rambling, second-guessing himself, maybe throwing in a sarcastic quip because humor is a coping mechanism, right?—and makes a heavy use of slang, especially internet-related. Also, he's still kind of young so his voice tends to crack, occasionally.

Female Kay: she's an alto! Her voice is smooth and easy to listen to, but her behaviour isn't different from Male Kay and so, her speech pattern is the same. Also, when she's nervous, she speaks way too fast.

Divya: she's soft-spoken, delicate but steady, with an articulate and precise speech. You might catch an accent that gives away something about her background. Still, when she's angry (often) or she's standing her ground (even more often) or she's defending Max (basically always), she sounds very firm, often using a sarcastic, cutting tone.

Male Max: still high-pitched, with a voice that hasn't fully deepened due to his age. When he speaks up (and that happens rarely), his voice shakes and cracks, and he tends to stammer, mostly mumbling. There is one exception: when he talks about his specific interests, his voice becomes more relaxed, although his shyness can still be noticed in his tone.

Female Max: very sweet, high-pitched and yet feeble. Her speech pattern is the same of Male Max.

Project diary, day 1:

Erkan sent me a message this morning that he and the other guys will be at the gym at 08:00. I should come already dressed. I don't even remember that I already got a bag with gym clothes yesterday. But in any case, there is one next to my desk. I put on a tank top, some shorts, socks and shoes. While brushing my teeth in the bathroom, I think to myself how ridiculous the way-too-big clothes look on me. On the bus, I'm a little uncomfortable with my appearance. And between the boys in the gym even more so. But it's a project, we have to go through with it.

We spend six hours in the gym. Has been amazingly fun. Somehow I was the only one sweating. The boys just played with their cell phones again. Hopefully there are good pictures for the project documentation. After the training I wanted to take a shower, but the guys took me directly to their regular shisha bar. I have rarely felt so uncomfortable. Because everyone else is bigger, more muscular and more masculine than me. And because I'm the only guest in sweaty sports gear. Besides, I'm starting to feel the soreness. I just fall into bed in the evening. Unable to move.

Project diary, day 2:

At 06:00 I get an address from Bogdan. Barbershop from his cousin. Meeting at 07:00 so that I no longer have to train with the ridiculous blond curls. I'm supposed to put on yesterday's clothes. I didn't have the clothes hung up yesterday. Actually I wanted to put on fresh clothes today So, of course, nothing has dried. Brushing teeth must go quickly, I'm late. Fuck, I actually finally get beard growth? Must take a closer look at me later in the gym.

So far it does not get at all. Bogdan's cousin not only gives me a new haircut, he also shaves me. In my opinion, completely unnecessary. But the result is cool. For the first time I can imagine in the gym on the weight bench in front of the mirror that the project will be a success. Otherwise, the workout goes like yesterday. After the six-hour program, I was looking forward to a shisha. But Ivo takes me to the outdoor pool. One hour of swimming One hour on the lawn. One hour of swimming. Ivo allows me to take a cold shower without shower gel after swimming. It feels good. And I like my tight white ass.

When Akay sends me the message to remember that my gym clothes are still in the locker, I'm already awake for an hour. Pushups and situps. Hey everybody! I know it's been a hot minute since I've shown signs of life, I hope I didn't worry anybody! I'm alive and doing pretty alright!

I took a big step back from most things having to do with the internet this past year (or maybe it's been two years? Who knows) for the sake of my mental and emotional health. Anybody who sent in a sigil request through my ko-fi that I wasn't able to complete, you should have received your refunds already some time ago, if you haven't please let me know.

This isn't me coming back to sigil making requests, I want to clear that up right away. I've been working at a new job since last year and most of my energy has been and will be focused on that until I'm roughly where I want to be free-time-wise.

I won't promise that my online presence will ever be what it was before, because back when I was able to be active almost every day I was in high-school or early college, and I've long since come to the realization that this blog was made to be a hobby, but at some point it became and obligation, which isn't an escalation I should've allowed.

Going forward I won't promise to complete all requests sent in, and I won't always give an answer or reason on why I don't want to make certain ones.

I'm turning off paid commissions on my ko-fi till the summer of next year (2024).

If you send or sent in a request and it looks like it'd be fun to make, I'll probably make it when I feel like making it and post it here as usual, maybe I'll even make some on stream once in a while.

But for the most part I'm trying to focus on life in the real world in front of me, building my life into something that's truly mine, and helping the people around me in my life to make up for all the help they've given me.

Imho people put too much in the houses. Like they're basically just social cliques, and the sorting hat was definitely taking into account what would or wouldn't destroy their social lives.

I mean, people put as much into houses as the characters seem to put into houses.

For the characters houses are meaningful, they are social cliques and I'm sure the Sorting Hat pays attention to the social situation the student would be in, but there is an element to these traits, to the values a student has when sorted. But more importantly, wizards think about them as so much more. They are a sign of status, legacy, and worth. Like, little 11-year-old Draco says he'd just leave if he was sorted into Hufflepuff because, in his mind, it would mean he isn't worthy of the other "better" houses.

And Draco isn't the only one. Hagrid calls all of Slytherin Evil, practically all the professors play favorites, Ron is worried over not being in Gryffindor because all his family is in Gryffindor, Neville worries about being in Gryffindor because he doesn't think he is worthy of the house reputation because of what his grandmother told him, and students repeatedly fall into the trap of "Wait, why aren't you at X house?" When someone's behavior deviates slightly from the stereotype of their own house. Like, Terry Boot, when told Hermione cast a NEWT Gemino charm, asks her: "How come you aren't in Ravenclaw?" Because they're supposed to be the smart guys.

Basically, the Wizarding World treats houses like a Big Deal. Even adults who graduated decades ago still have pride in their own house. Actually, there are real-world examples of things like that.

I mean, school houses are a British commonwealth thing that exists in public boarding schools. In these irl houses, students take pride in their house, wear their house colors, and are incredibly competitive with other houses. There are schools that apparently have family houses, an in, if a student's sibling/child arrives at the school, they'd go to the same house as their family member.

(I got this from reading online, as I never encountered a school like this irl, but the internet tells me they exist)

But if we talk about something I'm more familiar with, I taught in a sorta summer course thing for teenagers, and we divided the students there into classes since there were over a hundred of them. There wasn't really a difference between the classes, but each class had its name, symbol, and colors (and different staff members), and the students' tribal instincts kicked in. They got super competitive with the other classes and had their closest friends basically exclusively within their own class. We often caught them making fun of other students for being in another class (something that meant literally nothing). So the staff put a lot of effort into creating activities for the entire group without class separation to try and fight that.

Humans are tribal creatures, we have a built-in mechanism that tells us to come together in groups and think our group is the best. A house system just happens to kick that instinct into gear, but it's always there.

So, it's not that weird that that's how Hogwarts houses are treated in universe, and the fandom gives them the same importance characters in universe seem to give them. Because to them they are that important.

(Of course, not all characters have the exact same opinion about the house system. There are adults in the Wizarding World that don't actually care, but then there are many who do)

Now, houses aren't necessarily a bad thing, humans have this tribal instinct for a reason. We need to feel like we're part of a community, a sense of belonging is something most people seek be it subconsciously or consciously. And there is joy in being part of something that has a long history and that you can be proud of. The problem is when these groups start to define people more than their own person as an individual does. And, shockingly, I don't think the Wizarding World has that problem on a cultural level.

Like Scabior says:

Houses aren't everything. Even a Slytherin who knows where the common room is but has a suspicious name and says Voldemort's name is cause for suspicion. Being a proven Slytherin doesn't necessarily save you because they don't expect all Slytherins to back them. Because there are those who don't and they seem very aware of it. We also don't really see jobs that are reserved for certain houses.

I think some wizards do generalize more based on houses, but I think the majority of their adult population is aware that people are individuals outside of their houses.

Basically, I think the wizarding world's treatment of houses could definitely be way way better, it isn't as bad as it could be (which isn't a high bar since I expect the worst from the Wizarding World).

✦ my thoughts on the proshipping vs antishipping discourse

I want to start this post by saying that I do not support proshipping, but it's a little more complicated than that is all, which is why I'm writing my thoughts on it.

Also, I know I'm using 'proshipping' wrong and what I should really be using is darkshipping; so moving forward I will attempt to use the terms correctly.

DARKSHIPPING IS WRONG, HERES WHY

[1] Fiction isn't reality, and while real people aren't directly hurt because of darkship content, fictional characters are meant to represent experiences of real people. When trauma survivors come across content that actively romanticises and even fetishises life-ruining experiences they've gone through, it may retraumatize them. Furthermore, kids don't inherently know what's wrong and what's right, what puts them in danger and what doesn't. Of course, children like that shouldn't be on the internet in the first place, but they are and it's important to make sure the way we portray dark topics like that isn't harmful to anyone.

[2] Even if you aren't posting it publicly and keeping it to yourself, it isn't exactly a healthy hobby/coping mechanism/whatever it is to you. Even if fiction, why do you like pedophilia? Why do you enjoy romanticising grooming? No one truly knows how or why fetishes develop, but interacting with content that you know is harmful in real life is probably not a good idea. Even if you're not aroused, but simply enjoy it, it puts you at risk of seeking out such a relationship in real life. It's kind of like how unrealistic, brutal porn (although, it is objectively worse, since that is a real person) may cause a person to begin having a hard time controlling their urges and seeking out those kinds of situations in real life because the want simply becomes too much. I'm not calling all darkshippers groomers, but what you consume online does affect how you might act in real life.

BUT WAIT! THERES MORE!

[1] There is a big difference when it comes to morality between minors who darkship and adults who darkship. When discussing why being proship/darkshipping is, or isn't okay, I tend to notice this is is overlooked. Let me explain.

[2] Minors tend to darkship as a coping mechanism for trauma they have been through themselves. Under no situation is it okay or justified, and this is no different -- however, it is important to recognise that this group of people probably don't understand how wrong it is, nor how terrible of a coping mechanism it truly is. All you are truly doing here is romanticising what happened to you instead of figuring out your complex emotions; getting better is hard and many darkshippers are actually trying to improve their mental health and break out of this coping mechanism, and instead of harassing them it is important to try to support them on their journey to heal. There's also darkshippers who are young who do not truly grasp the dark undertones of the content they are consuming. Truthfully, when I was younger, I did not actively darkship but I didn't understand why pedophilia/darkship was so wrong. I didn't have any ill intent, I was just kind of stupid. That may be some of the case here, especially with how much unrestricted internet access parents give to their kids nowadays. Of course, there are quite a few exceptions, but it may not be best to immediately assume someone with '14' and the proship emoji combo in their bio is some irredeemable monster who only wants to hurt those around them.

[3] On the other hand, adults who darkship are a completely different story. They are adults for a reason; they know what they're doing, most likely. Even if they're using it as a coping mechanism, an adult would usually have more resources to get professional help or have more emotional intelligence to properly sort through their traumas. At that point, it's probably just something to hide behind so they can safely interact with content they know is wrong.

THAT SAID...

[1] Harassment of someone who you don't know the age or past of, or you do know the age/past of but they're a minor who doesn't know what it is/has been groomed, is not okay. Telling someone to hurt themselves and sending them death threats does absolutely nothing but: a) make them even more defensive of what they're doing, b) put them at actual risk of doing those things, and c) boosting your own self esteem. Unless you're okay with someone who's been traumatised and has no idea how to properly cope with it successfully killing themselves because of what you said, then just scroll and/or block. And if you are okay with that, perhaps think about if you are truly the better person here. [2] However, if that person is an adult and refuses to get help for their depraved wants then please give me their user so I can join you.

TLDR: Darkshipping is a terrible coping mechanism, morally wrong, and straight up dangerous to the person who darkships and anyone who comes across darkship content. Although, minors who darkship should be treated more kindly instead of getting harassed since they probably don't understand how bad it is or are deeply trauamtised themselves.

as a newbie to BO what exactly’s going on…?

Hello friend! Welcome to the fandom!

Unfortunately, the Bad Omens fan fiction community is experiencing some major drama at the moment. There was a blog, which I have personally talked to a couple of times, that had a lapse in judgment and didn't put trigger warnings on their work. Unfortunately, their story had themes of sexual assault (SA) in it, and since it wasn't adequately tagged, those who have gone through the unfortunate experience of SA (I have as well, so I understand entirely how triggering it is to read about) were met with that surprise in the story. I didn't personally read the story as I have been busy with college, so I haven't been on for a couple of weeks, so I don't have first-hand knowledge of what was written.

This is as far as I know because I have a friend on here who is close to that blog and told me a little bit about it. Different people have different information regarding how the blog reacted, but ultimately, even Twitter was talking about it and was very upset. The blog has been deleted, and now other blogs are getting targeted and harassed because their stories are dark romances. Unfortunately, many people don't understand the appeal of dark romances.

Many people are upset/irritated that my friend didn't speak about it until she was asked and then tried to say she is a terrible person who should disappear. She is a great, kind person. Not everyone needs to make a big statement because no matter what her statement is, she will be attacked. Just because you would have done something differently does not mean it is the correct way.

Here is my advice to you as a new fan: Please have fun with everything. Don't get too invested in how crazy this fandom can be sometimes. Please remember that anytime you feel overwhelmed, take a break from the internet! A majority of this fandom has created parasocial relationships with the band and tends to take things too far when they are angry at us Tumblr girls who create fanfiction. We know we don't know the boys personally, and we only see the side of them that they want us to see. We use the characteristics of who they present themselves as to the public and make fictional stories to provide us with enjoyment in our day-to-day lives. There is nothing wrong with that, and it is okay to enjoy it. It isn't hurting them because we aren't actively trying to get their attention to show them our stories. I have talked it through with my therapist, and she thinks it's a great and healthy outlet for creativity.

Here is my take for those on here who are anonymously being rude: Sending death threats, attacking people, and harassing them until they don't feel comfortable in a safe space they've created is absolutely unacceptable, and you need to grow up. This is Tumblr, not real life. You only feel safe saying things behind a screen and not showing your username because you are cowards. You have the right to feel how you feel. Your feelings are valid, but your actions are not. If you see a fanfiction blog and you don’t like fanfiction, block them. If there’s just a blog that rubs you the wrong way, block them. Let's be real; there is a very popular blog on here that I happen not to vibe with because I don't like their vibes, so I don't interact with them or read their stories. They don't know about me or how I feel, and that is okay because that is my problem, not theirs.

At the end of the day, most of us are grown-ass adults in our 20s, and some are in our early 30s. There is no reason for us to revert back to teenage girls and start a bullying train. We are all too grown for that.

I don't care about my own embarrassment anymore, I will take being embarrassed for being a freak over not being at least offering to help people who need it right now. And if immigration is what your goal is, I will gladly try to help you with Canadian immigration or coming to NY to explore your options. I will not help you cross with the intent to do so illegally, but a day-trip to check out Ontario? I will do it. I will not help with anything outright illegal, but if you need help and are willing to be close enough to legal not to get me arrested, I'm here.

There's this thing I saw people saying on social media "I could hate her more than anything in the world, and I still wouldn't leave her alone with that weird man at the party." You are now all in that first category, I don't care if you're a Trekie (I had to add humor, I'm losing it), you will never catch me leaving you alone at this party unless I am truly unable to, which would be if I'm arrested and/or dead.
