Update: turns out that Japanese, due to having very few sounds in the language, has a lot of words with the exact same pronunciation. This problem was only made worse by the fact that when Japanese took words from Chinese, it wasn't an organized, national effort; different people in different areas of Japan would unknowingly steal the same word from Chinese which had already been stolen and write or define it SLIGHTLY differently. So, now Japanese is FULL of homophones, to the point where Japanese speakers often find it necessary to clarify their speech by specifying which spelling they're using out loud or by pretending to write the word on their hand, and Japanese-language TV often has subtitles in Japanese.

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!
