Bridges Instead of Barriers

Anja, a committed journalist with bright green eyes and a hint of idealism in her voice, sat in a café near the parliament building, engrossed in notes about recent political developments, especially the strict immigration laws proposed by a party called "National Alternative." This party strongly reminded her of the AfD, with its rigid stance against immigration and emphasis on national identity.

Michael, a member of the National Alternative, a young man with short, well-groomed hair and an authoritative demeanor, entered the café to prepare for an upcoming meeting. He noticed Anja, recognising her as the journalist who often wrote critical articles about his party.

They coincidentally met at the counter, leading to a brief, tense dialogue.

"You are Anja Müller, the journalist, aren't you?" Michael began.

"Yes, that's me. And you are Michael Schwarz from the National Alternative, correct?" Anja replied.

A brief conversation ensued, where both politely but firmly expressed their viewpoints. Anja spoke about human rights and the importance of diversity, while Michael emphasized national security and cultural identity.

Anja decided to deepen her reportage by conducting interviews with immigrants directly affected by the laws. Their stories were moving and complex, filled with hope yet tinged with fear and uncertainty.

Michael, on the other hand, prepared for a major meeting of his party, convinced that their policies were for the country's good, even though he sometimes distanced himself from the more radical elements in his party.

One day, Michael invited Anja to a party meeting, hoping to give her insight into their movement. Driven by journalistic curiosity and a desire to understand the other side, Anja accepted the invitation.

The meeting was an eye-opener for Anja. She saw the complexity and diversity of the members and their views. Simultaneously, Michael was challenged by Anja's questions and comments to reconsider some of his party's rigid views.

The turning point came when Anja and Michael witnessed a violent attack on a group of immigrants. Instinctively, they worked together to help and de-escalate the situation. This shared experience had a profound impact on both.

Following this event, Anja and Michael found themselves in many long conversations. They realized that their differences were less significant than the common values they shared: humanity, justice, and the desire for peaceful coexistence.

Together, they founded an initiative advocating for a more balanced immigration policy and intercultural dialogue. They held lectures, organized events, and worked to build bridges between different communities.

The story ends with a scene of Anja and Michael sitting together at a table, surrounded by people of diverse backgrounds. They laugh, discuss, and share stories – a vibrant picture of diversity and mutual respect.

"Building bridges is harder than erecting barriers," Anja says.

"But it's the only way forward," adds Michael, and both nod in agreement.

US Aid Privatized

Since the US Congress attempted to limit government funding of Contras in Central America, and in light of publicity revealing that the CIA was directly involved in providing military and logistical assistance to anti-Sandanistan forces, official emphasis has shifted to providing contingency funding through a range of independent far-right organizations. In effect, the aid program has been partially privatized.

CAUSA (Confederation of the Association for the Unification of Societies of the Americas) is a front-runner. CAUSA is a moonie (Rev. Moon of South Korea’s Unification Church; a Christian anti-communist demagogue) front headed by General E Woeliner (now retired) of the USAir Force. Woellner is a one-time director of the Coalition for Peace through Security and is connected to World Medical Relief, a CIA front organization that provides relief to areas of conflict. World Medical Relief is itself channeling funds for weaponry to Contras.

One of the leading figures in WMR is General HC Aderholt (retired) of the USAF, now the President of the Air Commando Association and board member of the ‘Soldier of Fortune’ affiliate, Refugee Relief International. The Air Commando Association has a long-standing agreement with RRI to fly in supplies to Contras on behalf of Soldier of Fortune, the mercenary outfit.

Another similar set-up to Soldier of Fortune is Civil Military Assistance (CMA) — set up initially by four National Guardsmen in North Alabama. The organization grew by recruiting from the Ku Klux Klan (the infamous ‘free-enterprise’ racists) and the National Guard. It now has groups in several other US states. In 1983 a logistics officer at the US embassy in El Salvador arranged for the CMA to send military supplies to El Salvador; more shipments followed. The head of the CMA, Tommy Possey, was then put in contact with the Contra organization, FDN, by a US embassy official in Honduras. CMA agents later boasted of ‘seeing some action’. The CMA is now helping to train FDN guerrillas. In fact, it was CMA operatives who were involved in the much-publicized incident in August 1984 when a helicopter carrying mercenaries was shot down over Nicaraguan airspace just over from the Honduran border.

CMA members are receiving training themselves in guerrilla warfare and counterinsurgency techniques at Fort Bragg and Fort Benning, two US Army Special Forces bases. Salvadoran death squads are also trained at Fort Bragg. Fort Bragg is the home of the Joint Special Operations Command (equivalent to the British SAS force), headed by Brigadier General Richard Schotter. Interestingly, it was CMA members who carried out all the security work at the last annual conference, held in Phoenix, Arizona, of the World Anti-Communist League.

Providing funds to the mercenary organizations are a never-ending list of groups, one of the biggest being the Freedom Research Foundation, which specializes in public relations cover for anti-communist movements in third world countries. The head of FRF is Jack Wheeler, who does freelance work for the Moonie-owned paper, the Washington Times, as well as Reason Magazine (the organ of the Reason Foundation). On the FRF board are several prominent military and ex-military officials, including Mike Kelly, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Air Force. Other organizations involved in fundraising include the Christian Broadcasting Network, Coalitions for America, the Council for Inter-American Security (which has close connections with the National Security Council), New World Dynamics, the Council for the Defense of Freedom, the Heritage Foundation, the Conservative Alliance, Friends of America, and the Institute for Regional and International Studies (set up jointly by WACL and the Soldier of Fortune organisations).

At the center of the private aid scam is the World Anti-Communist League (WACL - whackos to their enemies) itself. Altogether it has been estimated (from WACL reports) that between $ 20-30m worth of aid has been contributed by WACL, via fundraising, to the Contras.

Considering that WACL head, Major General John K Singlaub, heads the special White House appointed Pentagon committee, set up in 1983 to investigate future support activity, and considering also that the same committee includes Air Commando Association chief, Harry Aderholt, it is not in the least surprising that current White House policy is to widen aid to the Contras by using mercenary and neo-fascist (ie WACL) organizations.

The idea of privatizing the aid was first proposed to Reagan by Colonel Oliver North, currently deputy to the National Security Adviser, Robert McFarlane. North’s main role, however is responsibility for Contra strategy. Singlaub regularly reports to North on how the aid program is progressing. Reagan himself has direct involvement in the privatization campaign, not only through his open admiration for WACL work but also by the support he has given organizations such as the Nicaraguan Development Council, created by the CIA as a front for the contra FDN.

Recent investigations have shown that the CMA, now involving an estimated 5.000 members and supporters, works directly with the CIA in its low intensity operations in the war. Two of the CMA’s main CIA contacts are John Hull and Bruce Jones. Hull, based in Costa Rica, has admitted to receiving around $10,000 a month from the National Security Council to help fund local Contra activities. Jones lives in Tucson, after being expelled from Costa Rica, and has taken responsibility for organizing a local branch of the US chapter of WACL, the US Council for Freedom.

Jones himself introduced one CMA activist, Steven Carr, to ex-Brigade 2506 members (Cuban-exile terrorist group involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion). Carr has been the CMA’s main buyer for arms from the Miami mafia. Given the occasions when the CMA has provided members to provide security at WACL and Soldier of Fortune conferences, it is not difficult to propose that the CMA has been appointed as the mercenary arm of WACL, at least within its Central American ambit.

On April 25th, shortly after Congress voted against providing additional aid to the Contras, The Guardian reported that the rebels had received a new supply of materials that had been stored in warehouses in Honduras purchased with private funds. The article revealed that one such warehouse, which served as a conduit for some of the $27 million in "humanitarian aid" diverted through a variety of Miami banks and drug dealers, was actually an ordinary supermarket in the Honduran capital. It was discovered that the supermarket had connections to several Honduran military officials who were assisting in the operation, under the guidance of the CIA, while also receiving substantial payments for their involvement.

In any event, the CIA has its own direct channels to the Contras. For instance, an airline called SETCO, which the CIA owns through fronts, is employed to transport supplies to the military airport of El Aguacate in northern Honduras and then to the Nicaraguan border. This operation is personally managed by John Malet, the CIA's desk chief in Honduras.

Diana was furious. 

She’d known her young uncle for only a handful of hours but here she was, ready to go to war for him. Perhaps that was what her grandfather had meant earlier, his words still ringing in her ears. 

I have a task for you, Diana. One i do not think you will turn now but i’ll give you the illusion of choice.

Perhaps it was less an illusion and more her grandfather merely knowing ahead of time how she would react. If Danny was to be believed – and he did seem such a trustworthy boy – his Clockwork knew every path one could take. 

She knew there were still questions to be asked, but Danny had been able to tell her a great deal before his eyes began to droop and she insisted he try to sleep. The curtains to the room had been left open and she watched as his eyes happily glazed over at the sight of open space before him. It had only taken minutes for him to fall asleep. 

Now she had a lot of work to do and she planned to get as much done while Danny slept as she could. 

She entered the conference room with a quick stride, many members already present for the meeting she had ordered via text. They’d learned that some equipment didn’t work well around Danny. Visuals were blurry at best and audio crackled into something indistinguishable. Diana had instead been texting information to Bruce and Kal to look into while she focused on the boy. 

“Were you able to find anything?” She asked immediately, not elaborating on which fact she was talking about. She’d sent them so many little snippets that she didn’t really care where they started. 

Batman just grunted, and despite wearing his cowl, she could see just how unhappy he was. 

“You’re not going to like it, but you expected that.” Superman said, papers laid out in front of him. He wasn’t the only one doing his research. 

Green Lantern and Flash were still there, the latter looking like he was having an existential crisis over the topic of ghosts. 

Martian Manhunter had also arrived, his frown informing her that the others had caught him up on what had been happening. 

“Can we confirm the truth as Danny has laid it out for us?” She asked, taking a seat. 

“Oh, yeah.” Hal muttered, rubbing a hand down his face. “Constantine will arrive later, but he could confirm the new High King of the Infinite Realm went by Phantom. Never heard him sound so horrified as him learning that someone had punched a hole into another realm in their house though. Inter-dimensional war crimes on our end are stacking up.” 

“Our end?” She asked. 

“The GIW…” Bruce began, sounding a mixture of exhausted and livid. “Are completely out of their depth and did not have the authority to just name a species unidentified to the rest of us as non-sentient. If the Infinite Realm retaliates, and John thinks it’s a possibility, it won’t just be aimed at the GIW alone but the entire dimension. That makes this more of a mess for us to clean up than it already was.” 

They’d already decided to help, that was what they did. But there was a difference in lending a hand and righting a wrong and taking responsibility for someone else’s fuck ups because they had to. 

“Can we prove it?” Diana asked. 

“Absolutely.” Kal nodded. “Honestly, for a government agency, their security is a joke. There was a backdoor already in place. We can ask Danny about that later.”

Diana nodded, certain the information would be good in his hands. She turned her attention back to Bruce. “The Fentons?” 

There was a certain level of disgust that tried to choke her out in that situation. Danny had been so hesitant, the betrayal fresh and painful. She had lived in the World of Men for a long time now and it had as many delights as it did drawbacks, but to learn what Danny’s parents had attempted to do to him left her burning to seek them out herself. 

His mother had lost her privilege to refer to herself as such.

She didn’t care what the circumstances were. Capture and torture with the intentions of vivisection was inexcusable. The target being a child made it all the more heinous. Diana knew Batman would understand without her saying a word. 

“Run of the mill mad scientists. They might have been onto something once when it came to energy but their bias took over. Even if they had been correct about ecto-entities, their language is incredibly inappropriate. No licenced and competent science journal would be associated with that.” He stared at her unhappily. “They’re lunatics. The fact that their children grew up in their home is outrageous.” He hit a button on the remote and a location appeared on the computer screens. 

A bricked house on a street corner, enormous Fenton Works sign taking up most of the front. It was an eyesore, but not as much as the sci-fi looking shuttle sticking out of the roof. The OHSA violations alone should have had the building condemned and there was no way permits had been granted for any of that construction. 

It was a supervillain's dream and not the least bit subtle. It should have been a crime in itself for the town to allow it to remain in a residential area and was shocking that no calls to Child Protective Services had been made. 

Yes, Danny was an exceptional being, but Diana understood now all the likely scenarios where he could have died in that house. Danny had called his death an accident, but she wasn’t so certain about that. “They were the ones to hurt him.” Diana said, hating how her throat was tight. She was already emotionally compromised. 

“Yes, i know.” 

Diana’s attention snapped back to him. “How?” 

“Simple reasoning. They are unstable ghost hunters with questionable science. Danny was removed from his home for his safety. Chronos said he needed a guardian. That doesn’t paint a pretty picture.” Bruce muttered. “Either his guardians couldn’t care for him, or shouldn’t care for him.” 

She felt her shoulders relax somewhat, knowing that such a logical conclusion should have occurred to her too. She really was worried about Danny’s recovery. “We can add it to the file i know you’ve created, but i’d prefer if no one asked him about that at this time. This last attack only happened several days ago and it is still fresh on his mind.” 

Bruce’s eyes narrowed, always a hound when it came to sniffing out abused kids. “This last attack?” 

“They’ve been after him for a while.” Diana hummed, though she’d only had a vague example or two since Danny hadn’t wanted to get into it. She couldn’t imagine how he’d just returned home every day to parents who tried to capture his other persona. 

“We must factor in his identity.” Martian Manhunter approached them, having been listening. J’onn had been doing his own research the last several hours. He laid down a startlingly clear picture of Danny in his white haired ghost form. A print out of an Amity Park newspaper article. 

“What is that?” Bruce frowned, sliding it closer to read. 

“The hero of Amity Park. Phantom. The articles are biased and unfavorable, but that is not the current accepted public opinion. Phantom protects the living from ghosts. He also protects the ghosts from the ghost hunters.” J’onn explained, voice carefully neutral. “Phantom appearing other places, perhaps shouldn’t coincide with where Daniel Fenton ends up.” 

“A name change could be warranted. If that’s what he wants.” Bruce adds. 

J’onn gave a single nod. “It’s a great deal of pressure on one teenager's shoulders. Being a king of a realm on top of that…” 

It was silently agreed upon that Danny deserved this break and Diana was going to get it for him.

“It was only a matter of time before something had to give.” Diana said, turning enough to speak to everyone in the room. “Well he won’t be dealing with all of that alone now. We start with dismantling the GIW, appealing the Anti-Ecto Acts, and smoothing over our relations with the Infinite Realm.” 

“Only that much, huh?” Flash muttered, trying to wrap his head around the science of ghost hunting. 

“Why not get some of the kids involved. Young Justice, maybe?” Hal was rubbing his eyes, not looking forward to the consequences of this mess. “Once he heals it might do him some good to be around others closer to his own age. People he wouldn’t need to hide half of himself from.”

When put like that, Diana could only agree. 

“I’ll mention it to him.” “I’ll get the information i have to Lois.” Clark said, sliding his papers into a binder. “If public opinion of Phantom is already decent in Amity Park, then we’ll up the exposure to put pressure on our oblivious government.” 

“I’ll take a few of the GIW facilities.” Bruce muttered, but he had that familiar tone that said he was about to let his children go buck wild. “A little recon…” he added vaguely. 

Before anyone else could put in their own two cents, the sensors went off, exactly how they had before Chronos had arrived. A paranormal knock of sorts before the very air seemed to split in two, a glowing green portal building around it. 

“Here we go again.” Barry muttered, each of them surrounding the portal as they’d done early for safety’s sake but they were less inclined to fight immediately. 

As J’onn was seeing it for the first time, he remained near Diana, keenly watching the portal manifest. It wasn’t Chronos who stepped out though, it wasn’t human at all. 

From the portal stepped a creature that Diana didn’t have the name for. Bipedal, humanoid, but beast like in appearance. Horns on his head and spikes from his tail made of ice were noticed secondary to his arm of ice that still encased his bones inside. His fur was white, his claws could easily kill and he was covered by a kilt and cape. 

What gave Diana pause as the bag slung over one shoulder, the tell tale signs of a medical cross across the front. 

“Who are you?” Superman asked, more polite than their earlier run in with her grandfather. 

The creature, a ghost presumably, held himself rigid. He was doing a great deal to make himself appear smaller then he was but his gaze was assessing. He was ready to fight if necessary. 

“I am here for His Majesty, the Great One.” Was his response. 

Diana stepped forward, deciding this was exactly what she suspected. “I am Diana. Granddaughter of Chronos who Danny fondly calls Clockwork. You are Frostbite, come to check on Danny, yes?” 

All of his attention was on her now, but he seemed to see what he wanted in her after locking eyes. “I am. Frostbite, Ruler of the Infinite Realm’s Far Frozen. I have come to see Our Savior the King, as his primary physician.”

“He’s a doctor.” Flash whispered. 

“Fascinating.” J’onn muttered, sounding a little winded by whatever he was sensing. “He is who he claims.” 

“I’m relieved.” Diana muttered, approaching him with a smile this time. “Please come with me and i will take you to Danny. I’m afraid we did what we could but his unique biology left us questioning our choices. He is resting in a private room.” 

“Did something happen to setback his recovery?” Frostbite asked, serious over the care of his charge as he followed Wonder Woman out of the conference room without so much as a glance back at the other heros. 

“Excitement, i believe.” Diana offered. “He may have been a little too excited to show off his alternate, living form and seemed to forget his condition.” 

Frostbite actually snorted. “Sounds like him.”

“I did not realize how badly wounded he was. We had been talking about our arrangements and he was answering my questions about ghosts. He appeared sore, but fairly pleased to speak with me. Given what he had just been through…” 

Frostbite grunted his agreement. “His heart is soft, but his will is unlike anything i have ever known. Many of us saw this tragedy coming, but he insisted on seeing it out for himself, hoping for a favorable ending.” 

Diana cracked her knuckles out of habit, that anger still simmering. “He will be safe in my care, i assure you.”

“The Great One is the rightful King to our realm, but many forget he is still just a child.” Frostbite said, eyeing her even as she led him through the Watchtower. 

“It is not something i am likely to forget.” Not after she’d seen how small he was in their medbay bed. “He’s resting but weak, you can help?” 

“As long as he has not taken more damage, i’m sure i can.” Frostbite said, a gentleness to his voice as they stopped at Danny’s room. Diana went in first to prove the area was a safe one but that may not have mattered given how quickly Frostbite followed her. 

He was at Danny’s bedside in an instant, having somehow moved passed her without knocking into her. He could have gone through her for all she knew. For all he seemed to be a hulking beast, Frostbite was nothing but gentle as he examined Danny. He looked over any and all work that had been done to Danny since his arrival, and checked the bandages across his torso. He went as far as to grab the clipboard on the foot of Danny’s bed to read, having no trouble understanding the medical jargon. 

From his medical bag, he pulled out several small bottles, all of them growing a toxic green. Injections were given to the teenager, and it didn’t seem to matter that he was in his living, dark haired form. 

“Has he explained to you what it means to be a halfa?” Frostbite finally asked, breaking the silence. 

“Only in vague, teenager terms.” Diana said. She’d been quite sure that Danny’s flippant attitude was more a coping mechanism than anything.

Frostbite just hummed. “Then i will have to fill you in.”

It was rather unfortunate that you developed a fever on the last day of the team’s training camp. 

With the inter-high tournament approaching rather quickly, you wondered if the stress and exhaustion from keeping up with the team had finally caught up to you. Then again, you didn’t exactly have the best immune system to begin with.

That morning, you were still fast asleep in your assigned room as everyone prepared to leave. Goshiki had knocked on your door, asking if you were alright. All you could do was hum weakly in response.

At some point, more voices started to appear from different directions. You assumed the coaches and the other members had come to check in on you, but their words just blurred together.

However, one voice cuts through the fog with startling clarity.

“She is not feeling well. What should we do?”

You force yourself to open your eyes. Multiple blinks later, Ushijima’s face finally comes into focus. For a moment, you wonder if it’s a fever dream—there’s something different about his usually stoic expression. It’s much…softer.

The chatter of the team fades into background noise as you focus on the team’s ace. Something about him just keeps you grounded in all the haze.

Your breath hitches when he suddenly makes eye contact with you and calls your name.

“Can you understand what I am saying? Would it be alright for me to carry you to the bus?”

Carry me?

You blink at him, nodding slowly. There’s not much you can do about it anyway—it feels like a hundred bricks are weighing your body down.

Someone gently peels your blanket away and Ushijima squats down in front of you.

“How should I carry her?” He looks at the rest of the team for help. Suggestions are thrown around, but in the end, everyone agrees that the best way is to ask you.

The thing is, you don’t know the answer to his question. 

You take a few deep breaths to think. As your eyes wander, you notice the sunlight slowly creeping across the room, nearly reaching your futon. Some of it shines on Ushijima, bathing him in an ethereal glow.

In your feverish delirium, you blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. “Doesn’t matter…I trust you.”

The world seems to stop as the words leave your mouth. His eyes widen a fraction before he nods once, resolute. “Alright.”

He slowly moves forward to pick you up, his movements careful. You try your best to be helpful, adjusting yourself when he slides one arm under your knees and the other under your back.

“Ah, bridal style.” You hear a snicker from somewhere. “Not bad, Wakatoshi-kun.”

As Ushijima pulls you securely to his chest, you feel the rumble of his voice. “Bridal style? Then…is this inappropriate?”

“No, no, that’s just what it’s called. Don’t worry, lots of people do it, not just married couples.”

“Ah. I see.”

You glance up at his face, taking in the solid line of his jaw and his calm, focused expression. For a fleeting moment, the thought of being Ushijima’s bride runs through your mind. How lucky his future wife would be…

The thought lingers longer than it should, but your imagination is cut short when Ushijima lifts you effortlessly. The sudden motion and slight shift in your orientation make your head spin, drawing a soft groan from your lips. Instinctively, your hands reach out to steady yourself.

Ushijima stiffens for a brief second, and you realize that your arms are wrapped around his neck.

Although you’re pretty sure your entire body is a furnace, you feel more heat rise to your face. Thankfully, no one comments on what you did.

“Her body temperature is very high. We should move fast so she can recover as soon as possible.” 

He directs the rest of the team, following a clear, continuous train of thought. You hear something about retrieving your belongings, checking for forgotten items, tidying up the room, things to buy at the convenience store, and lots more you can no longer process.

At some point, you nod off. It’s the absence of his deep voice that jolts you awake, just as he starts walking out of the room. 

You shift in his hold, braving another glance at his face. He notices and returns your gaze, but none of you say anything for a while.

(And well, it might be better not to, since he’s about to descend the staircase.)

It’s rare for someone to be carried by the Ushijima Wakatoshi, so you try to etch this memory in your mind forever. You focus on his strong arms and how they have not wavered once since he lifted you. 

When he reaches the parking lot, the cold morning breeze hits you. You involuntarily shiver, wishing you had worn your team jacket. 

“You are cold,” Ushijima comments. “Even though your body temperature is rather high.”

“Y-Yeah. That’s how a f-fever works,” you chuckle at his observation. You can’t help but pull yourself closer to him, arms tightening around his neck. “S-Sorry.”

“You do not need to apologize.” He continues walking and the bus quickly comes into view. A pang of disappointment hits when you realize that this moment with him will soon end.

As he brings you onto the bus, you tense at the temperature. A chill runs up your spine as you realize the air conditioning is at full blast. A shaky breath is all you can manage when Ushijima looks at you with…great concern.

“Tendou told me that cuddling increases body heat. Would that help you?”

You freeze, rendered absolutely speechless at his offer. “W-what?”

“He said that it makes a cold person feel better. Do you agree?”

You cannot bear another second dealing with your body’s baffling thermoregulation. On the other hand, you want to fulfill a selfish wish to keep him closer to you for as long as possible.

“Yes,” you respond with no hesitation, sucking in a breath.

Ushijima nods at your consent. As he takes the paired seat in front, he gently lays you down next to him. To your surprise, he takes off his team jacket and silently offers it to you.

The generous action nearly makes you swoon. You thank him softly with a promise to return it later.

Ushjima waits patiently until you finish putting his jacket on. As expected, it’s quite big, but you’re just grateful for the extra layer over your pajamas.

“How would you like to...” There’s a tinge of uncertainty in his voice that you’ve never heard before. You can’t help but grin at how endearing he is.

“Um…” You turn towards him, shifting a little closer. Initiating the contact is a lot more daunting than you thought. Slowly, you lift your legs to rest them over his thighs. Then, you lean into him and wrap your arms around his torso.

“Is this okay?” Your voice comes out a little breathless. “If it’s uncomfortable, I can-”

“I am fine with this.” Ushijima responds, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallows. “Would you like me to do anything else?”

His earnest desire to make you feel better tugs at your heart. “You can wrap your arms around me too.”

Ushijima hesitates for a moment, unsure of where to place his arms. You guide him gently, adjusting until the two of you settle into a comfortable embrace.

You close your eyes, sighing in content as his warmth finally envelops you. Throwing caution to the wind, you rest your head on Ushijima’s broad chest. The steady rhythm of its rise and fall is relaxing. 

“I feel better,” you mutter.

“I am thankful that is so.”

Would Washijo-sensei kill you if he sees this? Whatever, you can always blame it on the fever.

As the seconds pass by, you start to hear the thumps of his heartbeat. The rate is a little rapid, but you suppose it’s because he just spent the past few minutes carrying you. It doesn’t matter though, it’s soothing either way.

Before falling into slumber, you hear him speak in a low voice. “Thank you for your trust in me.”

“Of course, Ushijima-san,” You whisper in response. “You really are the dependable ace.”
