#i always end up crying in ktel#it's so nostalgic to me for no reason#intercity buses are like angels to me. psychopomps maybe. they do transport souls.

Some people will be out here writing shit like a Brit getting an overnight train (extremely rare) leaving at 11:30pm (most trains from major stations stop running between ~11pm and ~4am) on Christmas eve (trains don't run after 6pm on Christmas Eve/NYE and don't run at all on Xmas/NYD) between two UK cities that are a 3 hour trip at most and that's if you're hitting every tiny country station along the way
Meanwhile I'm checking that my character's brief distracted geological ramblings are factually accurate by checking a research paper on quartz inclusions and asking a geologist to proofread them
We are not the same
#am i insufficiently kinglike?#London to Cardiff has a direct line#which takes on average 2-2.5 hours#Manchester to Glasgow is 3.5 direct at the longest but usually shorter with a transfer#Glasgow to Edinburgh and vice versa is usually 45-1.5 depending if you get the express or the local#there is a regular lner service between London and Aberdeen which takes about 9 hours and that is the longest one I can think of#Edinburgh to York is usually 4#Edinburgh to London is usually 5#it takes less than 2 hours to get from Edinburgh to Newcastle#and NONE OF THEM RUN ON CHRISTMAS#you know what you can get? a bus. and it will cost you through the nose#actually you can get a bus between any of these locations because intercity buses are a pretty regular thing#and if it's not a holiday they're usually pretty affordable#the buses between Edinburgh and Glasgow are almost comparable to the train you're looking at a difference of maybe half an hour#they've got that shit down to a fine art#she did fix them for me too lol

I wish it was phrased „More than a quarter of greyhound bus users COULD NOT make their trip if bus service was unavailable. „Would not“ still sounds like a choice. It’s the only option they have, though.

Remembering the Fung Wah Bus: NYC to Boston’s Wildest Ride
If you ever needed to get from New York City to Boston (or vice versa) on a tight budget, chances are you’ve heard of the legendary Fung Wah Bus. For years, Fung Wah wasn’t just a cheap way to travel—it was an experience. From its unbeatable prices to its wild reputation, Fung Wah was the stuff of urban travel folklore. Whether you loved it, hated it, or were just slightly terrified by it, one thing’s for sure: it was unforgettable.
The Birth of a Legend
Back in 1996, Fung Wah Bus started out as a little-known service shuttling people between Chinatown in NYC and Chinatown in Boston. Tickets were dirt cheap—sometimes as low as $10! Founder Pei Lin Liang had no idea he was about to start a revolution in intercity travel.
While companies like Greyhound and Amtrak charged way more for the same trip, Fung Wah attracted students, immigrants, and broke adventurers. The buses were simple: no Wi-Fi, no comfy seats, no frills—just a bus, a driver, and a promise to get you where you needed to go (more or less).
The Fung Wah Experience
Let’s be honest—riding the Fung Wah wasn’t for the faint of heart. The buses weren’t exactly luxurious, and the drivers? Let’s just say they had skills—skills that often felt like they were auditioning for NASCAR.
The stories from Fung Wah rides are legendary. Overheated engines? Check. Buses randomly pulling over on the highway? Oh yeah. Packed seats and questionable smells? You bet. But somehow, that was part of the charm. It was like a rite of passage for college students and budget travelers.
Despite the occasional chaos, people loved it. Where else could you spend a few bucks and make it to another city with enough left over for lunch?
The Rise of Chinatown Buses
Fung Wah’s success kicked off an entire industry of “Chinatown buses.” Suddenly, other companies were offering the same cheap rides between cities like Philadelphia, D.C., and Boston. These low-cost buses gave traditional carriers like Greyhound a run for their money, forcing them to drop prices and rethink their business models.
For a while, Fung Wah ruled this space, becoming the go-to option for anyone looking to save cash. Sure, it wasn’t the safest option, but hey—it got the job done.
The Downfall
But all good things must come to an end. Fung Wah’s fast-and-loose approach eventually caught up with it. Over the years, the company faced growing scrutiny for safety violations. There were crashes, breakdowns, and federal investigations.
By 2013, regulators had had enough. The U.S. Department of Transportation shut Fung Wah down, citing major safety concerns—like cracked bus frames. They tried to make a comeback in 2015, but it didn’t stick. And just like that, Fung Wah was gone.
A Legacy That Lives On
Even though it’s no longer around, Fung Wah lives on in the hearts (and memes) of those who rode it. It wasn’t just a bus—it was an experience. For many, it symbolized freedom, adventure, and a chance to explore without breaking the bank.
Today, plenty of budget bus options exist, and they’ve learned from Fung Wah’s mistakes. They’re safer, more reliable, and (sadly) less chaotic. But ask anyone who remembers Fung Wah, and they’ll tell you—it was something special.
Fung Wah in Pop Culture
Over the years, Fung Wah has become a bit of an urban legend. It’s been mentioned in stand-up routines, memes, and indie films. For those who rode it, these nods bring back memories of cramped seats, fast drivers, and the thrill of cheap travel.
Why We’ll Never Forget
Fung Wah wasn’t perfect, but it was iconic. It made travel accessible for people who couldn’t afford Amtrak or didn’t want to deal with Greyhound. It connected communities and opened up a new way to explore on a budget.
If you ever rode a Fung Wah Bus, you’ve got a story to tell. And if you never did? Well, you missed out on one of the most chaotic, thrilling, and oddly charming travel experiences ever.
Fung Wah may be gone, but its legacy is still rolling. Here’s to the little bus line that changed the game—and made the NYC-to-Boston trip one heck of an adventure.

Tim & Ace Join the Bat Family Early AU #1
This is one of those AUs where Jason (pre-death or Jason!Lives AU) emotionally adopts Tim shortly after meeting him, but wherein the Drakes are not relocated to Bristol. They live in an expensive intercity apartment in Gotham. Perhaps it's in one of the last remaining wealthy areas approaching Park Row, or the Upper East Side, or it's in Robbinsville.
Wherever Tim lives is close enough that Jason used to see him around town and was concerned about him but had too much going on himself to try to help before Bruce adopted him. When Jason sees Tim now, he decides to figure out what this lonely child's deal is and find a way to help him. Maybe he first sees him again as Robin, out too late because he was taking photos in the park or a W&W campaign he's been playing at the local game shop ran late. Then later, he sees him as Jason at the library, skate-park, park, or a diner. Maybe they attend the same school somehow.
In any case, he decides this kid is on his own way too much, nice apartment or no.
After laying out the foundation to reel in his new baby brother build a friendship upon, Jason uses the distance between their places to his advantage. The intercity buses run practically all night, but there's a fairly early final bus at the Bristol stop. Alfred and Janet would never permit for Tim to ride his bike or skateboard all the way across the R. Kane Memorial Bridge and into Park Row to catch a nighttime bus home. So Jason just has to make sure Tim misses that final bus and then insist he spend the night.
After a couple successes, he also starts suggesting activities for multiple days where it wouldn't make any sense for Tim to head all the way back to an empty apartment and then return to Wayne Manor the next day. So naturally, he should just sleep over.
Jason also buys a spare school uniform in Tim's size to keep at the Manor. Then a couple pairs of jeans and some t-shirt and hoodies. Then there's a small pack of socks, some briefs, and sneakers. Then some 'spare' W&W manuals and detective novels. Basically, Jason turns the spare room that shares a bathroom with his bedroom into Tim's room under everyone's nose (except for Alfred, most likely, but we all know he's a enabler in this).
Dick absolutely notices that he practically has a new baby brother now whenever he comes to spend time with his little brother, but he just rolls with it. Jason has obviously decided they're keeping the kid and that's good enough for him. He checks in with his little bro to make sure they don't need to extract Tim from a bad situation asap and once he realizes there isn't an immediate danger, he just jumps in wherever Jason leaves an opening.
Despite Jason's efforts to be subtle, Bruce notices all this. He initially reaches the conclusion that Jason is lonely and so brings home Ace (dealer's choice which breed and background). Jason (and Tim) loves the dog, but naturally he still works on keeping his little brother dear friend safe at the Manor. Bruce also starts spending more time at home (actually home, not the Cave or his home office) to be with Jason more. This results in Bruce seeing Tim more and then he finally figures out what Jason (and possibly Dick and Alfred) have been up to.
At first, Bruce wants to talk Jason out of trying to adopt this child who has living, wealthy parents. Then he starts to notice the signs of neglect (and perhaps Jack's temper/selfishness) and can't help but join the cause.
Either Janet agrees to let Tim stay with the Waynes while she and Jack are out of town (which is often) and he does so until she dies (then Bruce goes for full custody), or Janet dies early and thingsbtake a turn for the worse with Jack, so Bruce goes for custody. (or this could tie in with my 'Alfred is Tim's biological granfather AU' idea and Alfred takes custody of Tim).
Jason doesn't understand at first why Tim seems so reluctant to stay overnight (but seems delighted to visit during the day). After all is said and done, Tim will inform him that he knows he's Robin and hadn't wanted to keep him from patrol just because he missed a bus or had a long commute from his parents' apartment. Tim never worried about Jason or the others figuring out that he knew their identities; he also thought Jason was lonely and a little pushy. He just enjoyed his company and quickly came to love him enough to be cool with all that.

Look I'm extremely pro-luigi but some of the posts about how he's "the wrong guy" are fully nuts conspiracy shit.
"It was a different jacket" yes, the surveillance picture where you can see his face is from the night before, when he checked in to a hotel. Having a backup jacket and backpack to ditch (which he did, in central park) is like the most basic thing you can do to evade identification.
"He looks different" People look different from different angles and especially different lenses. This is basic shit yet its still the basis for shit like "Avril Lavigne was replaced by a lookalike" stuff
"He said police planted evidence" yes, but please don't just read headlines. The planted evidence was 1. Large amounts of cash, which would potentially increase the severity of the crime 2. A 'sophisticated' backpack, which is just completely nonsense it was probably just expensive. They're using both of these things to inflate a case of him being some kind of professional assassin or danger to society. This is the part that he is denying. Because it's bullshit, it's inflated, and its extremely deniable. But...
"Why was he carrying a manifesto and the gun and all that other stuff, why not dump it" now I'm not Luigi any more than the next poster, but when you escape from a high profile assassination in a major city, and are on an intercity bus which by some miracle, has not been stopped by the police for like 3 days your paranoia is through the roof. It doesn't calm down, it just gets worse as the improbability increases. I imagine the mental space to be similar to my great grandfather's friends, who escaped a prisoner of war camp in fascist italy, and those few weeks on the run left them on edge, moments from being caught, for the rest of their lives. Compare his remarkable calmness "in the moment" vs descriptions of him visibly shaking when approached by the cops.
So the gun is either 'security' or, my initial assumption was that he was heading to another city to do another one but that is likely the narrative the prosecution will try to construct.
The manifesto is also security. He was up against the nypd, who recently shot about 4 bystanders over a subway fare. If he was gunned down, he needed to be able to communicate his motivations weren't just (as I've seen some clown on here say) "wanted to kill somebody"
"The manifesto is terrible" yeah its pretty weak, its not impossible that it's fabricated but its also possible it's of the "written on his phone while on the run" variety, see above point.
"Why was he in a McDonald's" he had been on the run for days, the places that greyhound buses stop are irregular and also stupid. He didn't come out of hiding and pop down the road for a big mac. As noted above, he may not have planned not to be caught, and have overestimated the nypd.
"He's innocent until proven guilty" yeah thats how the US justice system works. He's innocent of the crime, particularly of terrorism. Does this mean that physically literally he didn't cause bullets to enter a CEO who subsequently died of bullet wounds? No, honestly, he almost certainly did that. It remains to be seen whether, legally, this makes him either a murderer and/or a terrorist. People who demonstrably shot bullets into a person who then died are acquitted on a regular basis, though most of them are cops.
#i promise if he didn't do it he would have made that claim at any point whatsoever#this has been in my drafts for weeks but im STILL seeing REGULAR replies to ANY post about him#repeating all of these points passionately. mostly the planted evidence thing.#the distinction is whether he is a killer [not technically a crime] or a murderer [a crime] or#a terrorist [a political label to justify removal of human rights]#luigi mangione

Hey! So I live in a very conservative state with no intercity passenger rail lines connecting the major cities. The two major cities are geographically fairly close (about 60 miles from the center of one to the other) Tons of people drive back and forth between these two cities for work, shopping, leisure, major events, etc. I’ve talked to people in the past about how much better our lives would be if there was a train connecting the two cities and I always get the question of how would people get around within the cities once they arrived. It’s a fair question because both cities are very car oriented. The historic downtown areas of both cities are fairly walkable but also mostly full of cute shops and very few offices so putting a rail line to the center of town would be great for day trippers but wouldn’t do much for all the people daily commuting to giant office parks on the edge of town. Do you have any advice for what my response could be? Buses? Taxis? Bikes?
The main way I see people getting from town centers where train stations are located to the places where jobs are in the suburbs would ideally be things like busses and maybe trams if the city is large enough. Basically if we want rail to be effective we need good inner city transit to go with the intercity transit. I know it's not really a great answer but it is really the best way to get use out of a train line

“All this happening at once is really startling,” said Joseph Schwieterman, a DePaul University professor who researches intercity bus travel and directs the university’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development. “You’re taking mobility away from disproportionately low-income and mobility-challenged citizens who don’t have other options.”
Roughly three-quarters of intercity bus riders have annual incomes of less than $40,000. More than a quarter would not make their trip if bus service was not available, according to surveys by Midwestern governments reviewed by DePaul University.
Intercity bus riders are also disproportionately minorities, people with disabilities, and unemployed travelers.
A spokesperson for Greyhound, which is now owned by German company FlixMobility, said it strives to offer customers the most options for connections, but has “encountered challenges in some instances.” The spokesperson also said they “actively engage with local stakeholders to emphasize the importance of supporting affordable and equitable intercity bus travel.”
The terminal closures have been accelerating as Greyhound, the largest carrier, sells its valuable terminals to investors, including investment firm Alden Global Capital.
Last year, Alden subsidiary Twenty Lake Holdings purchased 33 Greyhound stations for $140 million. Alden is best known for buying up local newspapers like The Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News and The Baltimore Sun, cutting staff, and selling some of the iconic downtown buildings.
Alden has started to sell the Greyhound depots to real estate developers, speeding up the timetable for closures.
“I don’t know the specific details of each building, but it is clear what is happening here: an important piece of transit infrastructure is being sacrificed in the name of higher profits,” said Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh, a professor of real estate at Columbia Business School.
“The public sector has turned a cold shoulder to buses,” DePaul’s Schwieterman said. “We subsidize public transit abundantly, but we don’t see this as an extension of our transit system. Few governments view it as their mandate.”
Bus terminals are costly for companies to operate, maintain and pay property taxes on. Many have deteriorated over the years, becoming blighted properties struggling with homelessness, crime and other issues.
But terminal closures cause a ripple effect of problems.
Travelers can’t use the bathroom, stay out of the harsh weather or get something to eat while they wait. People transferring late at night or early in the morning, sometimes with long layovers, have no place to safely wait or sleep. It’s worse in the cold, rain, snow or extreme heat.
Bus carriers often try to switch to curbside service when a terminal closes, but curbside bus service can clog up city streets with passengers and their luggage, snarl traffic, increase pollution, and frustrate local business owners. In Philadelphia, a Greyhound terminal closure and switch to curbside service after its lease ended turned into a “humanitarian disaster” and “municipal disgrace” with people waiting on street corners.

here's a 1986 California Intercity Rail Timetable from Amtrak, with maps detailing routes in california along with feeder buses and some local transit connections (such as the san diego trolley to the border with mexico). i dont know about you, but this is my favorite Amtrak timetable i've ever come across; the maps aren't the most elegant, but overall its designed very consistently, and it nicely highlights the beautiful seaside views which are synonymous with the San Diegan (now the Pacific Surfliner) and parts of the Coast Starlight.

Montreal's Metro could close at 11 p.m. Intercity buses could stop at 9 p.m., and entire lines could be cut from the public transit network.
These are the types of measures public transit authorities could resort to in the greater Montreal area if the Legault government does not increase its financial support, according to a confidential document obtained by Radio-Canada, which explicitly suggests a return to the 1990s — an era when budgetary cuts led to a significant reduction in transit services.
Public transit officials have been on high alert since Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault announced plans to cover only 20 per cent of their estimated $2.5 billion deficit over the next five years.
