They created a long distance storytelling piece for bus passengers via text message, on the subjects of love, coincidence, and landscape. The narrative is constructed as a conversation between the two artists, who first meet on the bus. Participants will have the agency to reply all. Digital = Public = Landscape.

Re: the magical adventure post

I present to you, the story of how I met my spouse. (Aka my magical adventure)

I was really into indie movies for a time when I was in college, so one night I took the Fung Wah bus (this was the bus that was known for rolling over or catching on fire) from Boston to NYC. I watched my midnight showing, only to realize that the buses didn’t start running again until 6 or 7 am, so my options were to hang out in Times Square for several hours in the middle of the night or call the only people I knew in NYC.

They were a couple that I knew from World of Warcraft but had never met in person, and they lived in Brooklyn. I had only planned on staying one night and then going back to Boston, but I ended up staying three days. (Yes, I smelled pretty bad by the end of it.)

We became friends, and two years later, the wife insisted on introducing me to the husband’s childhood best friend. Who is now my spouse of 6+ years.

Also my spouse looks like a young Gandalf, so if anyone wants a magical adventure for their 50th birthday, let us know.

From whence shall we expect the approach of danger?

“A More Perfect Union”

The first thing you hear on “A More Perfect Union,” and the album it opens, is Patrick Stickles whispering “are we ready to go?”

Like everything else on The Monitor, this little whisper is calculated for maximum impact. Now – even before Abraham Lincoln’s Lyceum Address is read dramatically to you over the anxious drone of an even larger wall of guitars than that that so dominates The Airing of Grievances – you know something is about to happen. The stakes, and the scale, are far larger. If The Airing of Grievances is Stickles trying on his fascinatingly bizarre cocktail of influences – a mix of the grandiose, populist anthems of Bruce Springsteen and the communal rage of Crass – for size, than The Monitor is his confident mission statement.

If you still had the notion, after the recitation of Lincoln in the album’s opening minute, that this was the same group that made The Airing of Grievances, Stickles does his damnedest to dispense with them in the first verse. No one would mistake him for Pavarotti certainly, but the growl Stickles uses to declare “There’ll be no more counting the cars on the Garden State Parkway/no more waiting for the Fung Wah bus to carry me to who knows where” is clearer, no longer straining desperately to be heard over rivers of noise.

Not that there aren’t any more rivers of noise for Stickles to contend with. The guitars make their introduction by barging down the doors as soon as the Lincoln reading concludes, but you can actually begin to make out what’s underneath the storm. After inverting New Jersey’s poet laureate (“cause tramps like us/baby we were born to dieeeee!”), Stickles forces you to look beyond the wall of sound by unleashing a rollicking solo that would make The Boss himself proud.

“A More Perfect Union” is the cheesy, pre-battle speech in every action movie you’ve ever seen (as if this wasn’t clear enough, Stickles even leads a sing-along of “rally around the flag” towards the song’s conclusion). As Stickles’ final six-string heroics, and the song’s whiplash of a conclusion fade away, the words of William Lloyd Garrison’s “The Liberator” are recited. In those words can be found the modus operandi of “A More Perfect Union,” one of the great openers of the decade to one of the great albums of the decade.

The song, and The Monitor as a whole, wouldn’t become a millstone around Stickles’ neck for a couple of years time (more about that later in the week). For now, it was just an unbelievably bold anthem, the sort of song that makes you remember what rock music sounds like at its absolute best.

I will be as harsh as truth and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject,  I do not wish to think, or speak, or write with moderation. I am in earnest. I will not equivocate,  I will not excuse,  I will not retreat a single inch, and I will be heard.

condensed post:

- woke up at 9am again. brian cynthia tyrone and i took a lyft this time. cause tyrone needed to catch a bus at 11. we lyfted and it took like a little over an hour with traffic. we dropped off tyrone in chinatown around 10:15am then continued up, getting to the venue around 10:30am. jwoos helped cover me for my shift with sakib in the hardware lab. sakib technically ended his shift at 10am but didn’t mind chilling there anyway so it wasn’t too much of a rush

- hung out with sakib and jwoos in the hardware lab from 10-12:30pm. sakib was playing runescape LOL. franky came to hang out briefly. also bumped and chatted briefly with dan!! :) 

- saw the beginning of closing ceremonies and then left with cynthia and brian to catch our bus at 2pm. we walked down to chinatown and got wah fung for lunch. we stopped by a mall place for cynthia to snag her friend a birthday gift. then we chilled in a park and ate wah fung. it was pretty good but really greasy. i couldn’t finish all of it :p

- we got some boba at yaya tea

- took the bus at 2pm, getting back to boston around 6:30pm. i basically passed out and slept for most of the bus ride. cynthia and brian also mostly slept

- we got sushi dinner in chinatown at avana sushi. then got some crepes right next to the shop and cynthia and i split a strawberry banana crepe. it was pretty chill and fun :D we were all exhausted lmao

- brian and i took a lyft back to the apt and got back around 8:30pm ish

- i took a long shower and then just kind of just chilled. watched some youtube and looked into some interview prep for dropbox

- passed out around 12am

what a long and fun weekend. i was exhausted but it was really nice seeing everyone!!
