Remus Lupin with the bent nose that’s a little too big, with the soft tired amber eyes, with the soft jawline, with the slightly crooked teeth, with the spattered freckles all over his face, with the knobby knees, with the lanky limbs, with the skinny and completely un-muscled body, with the fluffy curly and inexplicably tangled tawny hair, with the awkward and hunched posture.

Remus Lupin who is so strange and weird that no one really understands why/how he’s friends with James and Sirius, and everyone is even more confused when he and Sirius get together and this literal god of a man is with such a dweeb (then you see them together and they’re so sweet and in love that it makes sense). He has to have a hand on Sirius at all times because, if he doesn’t, he’s scared that Sirius will leave and he won’t know where he is. He always wants to be in Sirius’ lap because he’s freezing cold constantly and Sirius runs hot, so he clearly needs to be cuddled, because why else would they be the way they are. He always has to be held and reassured that he is loved because he’s an insecure little baby.

Remus Lupin’s first kiss was Sirius, he lost his virginity to Sirius, his first relationship was with Sirius, because he’s scared of everyone else finding out he’s a werewolf. The only time he was ever called a Casanova was when his friends poked fun at him for so much as talking to someone outside of their direct friend group (Sirius, James, Peter, Lily, Mary, Marlene, etc.). He was an antisocial weirdo that shied away from conversations, and panicked and ran if any confrontation occurred.

Remus Lupin was not an active problem solver, his fight or flight response was permanently set to flight. He lived on chocolate and tea and whatever snacks his friends brought him when he was studying. He wasn’t a natural straight-O student, he had to work his ass off to get Es in most classes and Es and Os in his best ones. He couldn’t work for the life of him because he had a bad back and hips and knees and once hurt himself trying to lift a stack of books the wrong way (with his back not his legs). He’s allergic to pollen and dust and peanuts and he’s lactose intolerant and his stomach is super sensitive. He doesn’t smoke because he’s got asthma and is too scared he’ll get lung cancer or something because he’s drop-dead terrified of literally everything.

Loser kinda-ugly nerd Remus John Lupin needs to make a comeback because he is so cute.

i have ALWAYS wanted to write an interactive story, not one based on votes—but one where a reader can stumble upon it months later and still be able to make their choices. when i was younger, i bought an interactive fantasy book, and it was the most magical novel i’ve ever read. i am so, so, excited to share this with everyone! it will be my first ever interactive story, so i only ask for a bit of patience, ueuue.

Remus Lupin Caregiver Headcanons

Notes: COMPLETELY SFW! I tried to leave it open whether this is young/student Remus Lupin or older/Professor Remus. Also, I do not support or endorse any of the discriminatory views of JKR Hope you enjoy, and feedback is welcome!

Would be so understanding and perhaps even knowledgeable about age regression, right off the bat.

Because it’s a trauma response, and this man has seen far too much, he might already be familiar with it.  And if not, he’s quick to understand and offers to help you in any way he can.

Remus already knows what it’s like to be alone, and he’ll be damned if he lets you feel the same way.

The vibes=candles, baby mobile, fluffy blankets, books, sweaters, hugs, small stuffed animals…

(He is so Caregiver, ok?)

Nicknames include cub, dear, love, darling, etc.

Makes the BEST angel milk, tea, and hot chocolate.  Literal perfection.

Thanks to magic, Lupin can have any comfort item, snack, or toy in your hands at a moment’s notice.  And he has all your favorites memorized!

He can read you like an open book.  He knows when you’re sad, when you’re slipping into Little Space, when you’re hiding a secret, etc.  and he’ll respond accordingly to get you back on your feet.

If you happen to have a disability, chronic illness, etc—Remus is perfect.  He knows all about it; the best ways to manage pain, what activities to do while tired or bed bound, etc.

Storytime is one of his favorite things to do together

His voice is so comforting and loving

He lets you sit on his lap or cuddled up to his side, usually on his couch or rocking chair

Drawing is another frequent activity.  If he has work to do, then it can easily keep you occupied and quiet but nearby.

You guys go to the park or on walks sometimes too!

So great to talk to.  He always makes sure that you’re feelings and thoughts are heard and understood

The soft and small affections.  Patting your head as he passes, squeezing your hand when you’re nervous, the quick kiss on the forehead…

That being said, he will absolutely hold you tight if you’re upset or just need some extra love.

If you/both of you are having a rough day, the two of you will just lay in bed quietly.  Cuddles galore, head rubs, etc.

Is available 24/7. You could wake him up at three a.m. and he’d still be happy to caregive.

Fairly strict on rules.  Especially bedtime and safety related issues.

Also likes to keep a schedule/plan.  Having things prepared, especially ahead of time, are great when he’s having a bad pain day.

Sometimes he worries about hurting you; he’s been a werewolf for long enough to know he won’t lose control except on the full moon, but it still bothers him.  What if you go looking for him in his werewolf form?  What if Moony looks for you?  Were you scared of him?

(So you’ve assured him, both in and out of headspace that you’re not scared of him at al)

When the full moon approaches he is often sick and tired so you do your best to make him feel better.  Drawing more pictures, playing doctor, and snuggles are frequent.

On the night of the full moon, he has to leave you with a babysitter.  He entrusts you to Sirius, who is the greatest babysitter of all time.  He adores you, and you love him too.  (He needs his own set of headcanons for caregiving because he’d LOVE it)

“ Would you like a massage?”

Remus appeared in the dorm doorway, leaning on the frame, still wearing his bag but absent of his coat. He must have been in the libary reading. He looked the same as he always did. Acrylic yarn sweater with black pants. Green converse that were at one point black, but faded to such a state of disrepair. Remus didn’t care. Shoes were shoes, and as long as they had no holes they were functional.

Y/N placed the towel back on her head and flopped backward back on his bed, she couldn’t be bothered to respond.

“ Headache?”

“ No… long day,” she decided was an appropriate response.

Remus ditched his bag in the doorway and stepped out of his shoes without unlacing them, “ Do you want me to rub your feet?” he offered again.

Y/N rose to her elbows, and removed the rag from her face that she used to block out the sun that seemed content to disturb her. She could have magically closed the window, but couldn’t be bothered. She looked at him strangely, narrowed her eyes at him and nodded.

He took a seat next to her feet, lifted them from the bed and placed them gently in her lap, he kissed her ankle carelessly before carefully untieing each of her shoes and slipping of her lacy white socks. Y/N flopped back on her bed forgoing the towel and settling on draping her arm over her eyes to relax.

“ Want to talk about it?” Remus offered, rubbing at the ball of her feet, almost so gently it tickled.

“ Not to bad, being overdramatic really but this school is running me ragged. It’s just awful. I must be coming down with something, I have to be, I’m usually not this bothered by everything, but the suns too bright all the time and people talk to much and- Merlin! Remus, what are you doing to me?”

She snatched back her foot and looked at him with an accusatory glance. Gradually he applied more pressure as he rubbed her feet though it was never absent of his hands usually delicate nature.

“ Rubbing your feet,” he said innocently. He opened his hands and Y/N placed her feet back in his lap apprehensive.

Remus looked innocent, with his round glasses and thin frame but that was by no means accurate. Most of the marauders successful schemes were planned by him, and he could be clever when he wanted to. He got his ideas from books, and Y/N had the vague thought that he was not studying for his runes exam, and doing something much more cynical.

“ Keep talking,” he urged, grabbing her other foot, and using the heel of his palm to dig into the heel of her foot.

“ James might kill me with Quiddich, and Lilly and Marlene have been fighting again, which means I’m back to baby sitting them like were back in grade school- Remus!”

His fingers had worked their way up to the smooth skin on her calf, she rose suddenly and brought her knees together. Remus had never seen someone so intensely beautiful. The way her cheeks flushed with a violent red and her the way her hair splayed around her, slightly frizzy and unkept from laying on it so long. Her bottom lip was trapped in her top teeth, as she blinked desperately at Sirus, with an expression somewhere between confusion and desperation.

“ What the hell?”

“ I’m just rubbing you feet,” he shrugged curtly.

“ No, you’re doing that on purpose!”

“ What?” he shrugged, giving Y/N a devilish smirk, that he somehow made slightly charming.

“ Making me… making me want you,” she whispered as if it was some horrific secret. She was by no means a virgin, but rather shy in aspects of insisting sex, and preferred when Remus took the lead, even when she was undeniably horny and wanted Remus in ways that would be concerning to most if she voiced them outloud, she would keep her head down, and hoped Remus would understand what her looks meant from across rooms or the simple tugging on his sleeves.

“ Want me?” he asked, pretending to be confused.

He read in a book somewhere about eurageros zones, and wanted to see if what he read was accurate. Turns out it was because Remus could read the desperation all over her face, like she was begging to be fucked. They hadn’t had sex in weeks, neither of them having the time, and Remus had the time, and now he had an erection.

“ Because it sounds like need someone to treat you well,” he suggested. Y/N’s eyes went wide before she nodded. Remus narrowed his eyes and nodded as well.

ive said this before but i dont really think remus and sirius would have gotten on THAT well during their hogwarts years mainly bc the marauders is a dynamic that is characterised by sirius, remus and peter all revolving around JAMES. like james is the central figure to that friendship group and i think theyre all trying to get his attention. i genuinely believe that if remus was going to have a crush on any of the maurauders it would be james absolutely. like james is the one cheerfully calling one of the most traumatising experiences in remus' life his 'furry little problem' which, considering hope and lyall isolated him from all other children HIS WHOLE LIFE, would be a RELIEF. the fact that it was james who stepped in during the whomping willow incident with snape whereas sirius was the one instigating it. the fact that remus has such fond memories of james, the fact that james paid for remus' expenses after hogwarts, etc etc. like i completely believe remus had an unrequited crush on james which knowing james being as like emotionally clueless as he is probably wouldnt even have FIGURED THAT OUT. but this is all a long winded way of saying i really dont think sirius would be the one that remus would have romantic feelings for during their hogwarts years. part of that also is sirius' personality which is quite aloof and cold when he wants it to be. we're canonically told that the only person sirius really opened up to was james so i automatically think remus wouldn't even go there because of who HE is too. like i think growing up so isolated and alone like he did and being worried that no one would accept him for who he is then he meets the veritable whirlwind that is james potter who not only TURNED INTO AN ANIMAGUS FOR HIM but tries to normalise his experiences as much as possible this would critically inform who he would have a crush on. i think sirius' personality is too ... distant for remus to ever actually consider having a crush on him. for lack of better phrasing .... sirius is Too Traumatised. remus is proven time and time again to be an incredibly selfish character. i really dont think his idea of a crush would include trying to piece together a SEVERELY broken person (sirius). i think to him someone like james (or someone who james APPEARS to be) would be highly attractive. the golden boy, ridiculously clever and arrogant and silly and friendly and loyal and mean too. i think james' openness and capability to be extremely warm would be very thrilling for someone like remus whereas sirius' moodiness and mystery and closed-off nature would be exactly what remus is trying to escape FROM. this is exactly why we're canonically told that remus and sirius mistrusted each other during the war years which was not said of remus and james' relationship. i think in having a crush on james potter, captain of the quidditch team, the most popular boy in school, remus gets to live out his fantasy. james with his easy and loving parents, his great childhood, his spoilt naivety ... would all be what remus craves. so again.... this is all to say i think thats the fundamental reason why i think remus would be more likely to have a crush on james than on sirius and i dont know why theres not more fics of this/why this idea isnt more popular.

it all happened before he could even process it. one moment they're laughing, and having a good time -- start the discussion that's been in the air between them for the months that they've all been together. harry had moved in with them, things were fine. he smiles as sirius reminds them that they had indeed promised each other forever. even when things were hard -- even when they had been separated when lily and james went into hiding -- forever was promised. he watches as james moves to sirius to kiss him, and he feels the warmth spread through him that he hasn't felt in over a decade. their family is back together. they're good. he's the first to immediately notice the shift in sirius -- setting his mug of tea on the coffee table in front of him as he notices the way sirius's brows press together when james kisses him again. his lips part to call for james, but it's too late. he can see the way his hands tremble, the way he backs away from james -- someone he's never seen sirius back away from. he stands and he slowly approaches him.

"sirius -- padfoot, he's here. i'm here --"

but he's cut off when sirius's snaps at him, and manages to move out of the way in barely enough time before the glass of liquor in his hand comes flying toward him. he doesn't even wince when a glass shard catches his arm as it shatters. he looks up the stairs when he hears harry's footsteps and he glances over at james -- giving him a silent nod before he speeds past them and moves to take harry back upstairs before he can witness anything. wandless and wordless, he casts a silencing charm on harry's bedroom -- immediately silencing the loud shouting that comes from sirius down the stairs. he sits with harry, long arms wrapped around him and he tries to explain what's going on as best as he can.

because for once, remus isn't even really sure what happened.

he thought that they were fine. that sirius had finally come to terms with that he was out, that he and james are here and alive and he won't have to deal with being in azkaban ever again. either sirius was extremely good at hiding it, or he truly thought he had gone completely mad and just accepted that it was okay. he distracts harry with magic, showing him different and fun things that harry should be able to do one day without a wand once he's practiced enough. like making the ends of his fingers sparkle, or lighting a candle with just a snap of his fingers. it isn't long before the young teenager is asleep, cuddled into remus's large form and remus waits. he waits for as long as he thinks he needs to -- head on the top of harry's head and keeping his arms wound protectively around him as he can. it's only until his limbs can't take being shoved into a smaller bed that he carefully moves to get out. he pulls off harry's glasses and sets them off to the side, pressing his lips against his forehead in a soft kiss before tucking the teenager in for the evening. it seemed like it was just yesterday they were telling harry he hadn't needed to clean the entire house -- or be up early to make breakfast for them. he turns off the lights and opens the door -- thankful to not hear the screaming or sobbing from earlier. when he goes into their room, his eyebrows raise when he sees sirius peacefully sleeping -- an empty sleeping draught next to him, which is something they've had to use whenever sirius wakes from a nightmare. remus takes in the bandaged hands, and knows that there's a mess downstairs that they'll have to clean up. his heart aches for the moment -- knowing that one of the men he loves is so broken from reality that he can't tell what's real and what isn't. over a decade of torture -- and both he and james had been fooled thinking that things had been back to normal. he glances around for james, and finds him at a far open window -- trying to hide the tremble in his hand as it holds one of the rolled cigarettes remus had made. he pulls his fingers through his dark hair, moving toward him and hesitantly resting his hand on his back. "hey," his voice is soft, dark eyes flicking over the side of his face as he seems to barely acknowledge that he's there. as if trying to hide everything that's so clearly written on his face. james potter wears his heart on his sleeve, even after being gone to the world for over a decade. remus reaches over, taking the cigarette from his hand and putting it out on his thumb. he sets it down, as he guides james to turn and look at him. large, calloused hands move to cradle his face between them -- thumbs brushing along his cheeks to wipe at the tears that stain them. "it's not fair that padfoot gets a kiss, and i don't. absurd, really." a soft smile grows on his lips when he hears james let out a soft chuckle -- and soon the distance between them is closed and their lips are upon each others for the first time in over a decade.

the tension seems to leave his body, especially when he feels james relax into him. his thumbs move gently along his cheeks, and for part of him it feels like time hasn't passed. that nothing has happened and they're all still there, dumb, young and in love. when they pull away and their eyes meet, he can still see the tears pooling in his eyes and the reality of the world settles upon him once more.

not everyone is there. lily is gone. they're not okay. they're all broken and fucked up one way or another. "stop thinking that," he states softly, almost as if he can read his mind. he moves his hand to press against the crease between his furrowed brows, soothing it over while his hand moves to rest on his neck -- fingers brushing along the scar that was left behind due to the attack on their family. remus rests their foreads together and he shakes his head. "it's not your fault, james. you didn't do anything wrong. sirius is -- far worse than we thought. we couldn't have known."

remus looked behind him. now, in front of him, stood a slighter and neater version of sirius. his hair was shorter, his robes were proper and his stature smaller, yet he had the same aristocratic features and the same air of superiority sirius did.

“may i help you?” he asked politely. he’d heard a few things about regulus black, most of them not particularly pleasant.

“you are in my way.” regulus glared at him. remus’ eyebrows furrowed; couldn’t he just pass by? “remus lupin, is it?”

“yeah, that’s me. why?”

“you are friends with sirius.” an understatement, if you asked remus. friends didn’t usually snog, or keep a certain level of a relationship a secret from their friends. but, then, again, regulus didn’t need to know that. “he talked about you. and about potter, and about that other boy who follows you around whose name i do not know.”

“peter,” he replied. “i don’t know why we’re having this conversation, to be honest. i mean, don’t get me wrong, i—”

“because you’re in my way,” regulus drawled. “i have to get a book for my potions essay, and you are in my way.” he passed remus, now standing a few steps away from him, who was not feeling particularly pleased by the conversation. then, he heard regulus clear his throat. “how is sirius?” he asked, pointedly avoiding eye contact with him, as if they could burn into their sockets if their eyes so much as met.

remus exhaled; well, if they had a subject in common, that was it. “he’s, ah, fine. great, even.”

“professor slughorn has been asking him to join his exclusive club for years now,” he said, matter-of-factly. “but i told him not to expect anything of sirius, and that he wouldn’t join, because he doesn’t want people,” regulus scoffed, as if the words he were about to utter physically pained him, “kissing up his arse. those were his words, not mine.”

“i heard them a handful of times, yes, remus laughed, as regulus passed him, book in his hand.

yet his laugh died down when he saw the black shadow lying underneath the sleeve of regulus’ crisp, white shirt; a dark-skulled serpent.
