remus was skimming through the books in the library, when suddenly—
“hello.”
remus looked behind him. now, in front of him, stood a slighter and neater version of sirius. his hair was shorter, his robes were proper and his stature smaller, yet he had the same aristocratic features and the same air of superiority sirius did.
“may i help you?” he asked politely. he’d heard a few things about regulus black, most of them not particularly pleasant.
“you are in my way.” regulus glared at him. remus’ eyebrows furrowed; couldn’t he just pass by? “remus lupin, is it?”
“yeah, that’s me. why?”
“you are friends with sirius.” an understatement, if you asked remus. friends didn’t usually snog, or keep a certain level of a relationship a secret from their friends. but, then, again, regulus didn’t need to know that. “he talked about you. and about potter, and about that other boy who follows you around whose name i do not know.”
“peter,” he replied. “i don’t know why we’re having this conversation, to be honest. i mean, don’t get me wrong, i—”
“because you’re in my way,” regulus drawled. “i have to get a book for my potions essay, and you are in my way.” he passed remus, now standing a few steps away from him, who was not feeling particularly pleased by the conversation. then, he heard regulus clear his throat. “how is sirius?” he asked, pointedly avoiding eye contact with him, as if they could burn into their sockets if their eyes so much as met.
remus exhaled; well, if they had a subject in common, that was it. “he’s, ah, fine. great, even.”
“professor slughorn has been asking him to join his exclusive club for years now,” he said, matter-of-factly. “but i told him not to expect anything of sirius, and that he wouldn’t join, because he doesn’t want people,” regulus scoffed, as if the words he were about to utter physically pained him, “kissing up his arse. those were his words, not mine.”
“i heard them a handful of times, yes, remus laughed, as regulus passed him, book in his hand.
yet his laugh died down when he saw the black shadow lying underneath the sleeve of regulus’ crisp, white shirt; a dark-skulled serpent.
#an awkward interaction#this is so self indulgent#but i wanted to write an interaction between them with how *i* see their dynamic#anyways!!!! that’s one hell of a secret for remus to keep#remus lupin#regulus black#my writing

I'm Sorry I'm the One You Love
Part I (Part II)
Sirius Black isn't in love with James Potter. Though sometimes Remus looks at him like he is. Like Sirius is sad and pathetic and...he doesn't even know, pining?
But he isn't.
Well.
Alright.
Sad and pathetic, perhaps. Depending on who you ask. On when you're looking. But he isn't pining. And he isn't in love with James.
That would be too easy.
Sirius thinks he could bear just being in love with him. Thinks that's a pill he could swallow. Unrequited feelings and all that. He'd mope around and write sad songs and drink too much. But eventually he'd get past it the way people seem to do with those kinds of feelings. But he isn't in love with James, is the problem.
He's fucking consumed by him.
"Sirius."
"Don't start."
Remus huffs, but, mercifully, goes back to his coursework, shaking his head while he does. Sirius, on the other hand, keeps staring at James and Lily. They aren't doing anything really, Sirius doesn't reckon Evans is one for big, public displays of affection. But then, maybe that'd be better. James and him don't - they've never - done that. Kiss or anything. So. It probably wouldn't feel so much like a kick in the fucking teeth the way watching them now does. Leaning into one another, heads nearly pressed together, whispers traded back and forth, secret smiles, nudging feet. James and Sirius have done that plenty.
Remus sighs again. "Why don't you talk to him?"
After a few seconds Sirius manages to pull his eyes away from the grotesque spectacle on the other side of the library. Why the hell are they sitting there anyway? Surely they could have sat at the same bloody table?
"I talk to him every day," Sirius says blankly. Which earns him a deeply unimpressed look.
"You know what I mean."
"I don't."
"You do."
"Don't."
He gets an eye roll this time. "Fine," muttering as he picks up his quill. "Have it your way then."
Remus has freckles splashed across his nose and cheeks, and just about the longest eyelashes Sirius has ever seen. He's obsessed with them, to tell you the truth. He's asked Remus if he uses some kind of potion for them but the other boy only scrunched his nose up, giving Sirius a look he didn't understand.
Remus's eyes flick up again now, meeting Sirius's, finding him staring. Sirius doesn't look away. He isn't embarrassed. Not about this. Not about most things, honestly.
"What?" Remus ask warily.
Sirius only shrugs. "Astronomy Tower? Tonight?"
Remus holds his gaze for a long moment before dropping his head again. "Fine." He doesn't sound overly enthusiastic but then, he never does with Sirius.
Sirius has never kissed James. Not even once. Though he's thought about it a few times. Sometimes he wants to ask James if he's thought about it too. Just so he knows. He's never kissed James.
But he has kissed Remus.
Loads.
He thinks he might be an expert at this point.
It takes the edge off. Makes him feel less like he's going insane every time he sees James. Like he wants to eat him and not in a sexual way, not really, more like in the way wolves want to sink their teeth into the necks of rabbits. Want to snap their spines. Want to feel them go limp. Want to swallow them whole so that there's no difference anymore. Between them. Between us. I've made you part of me. Bone of my bones. Blood of my blood. Skin of my skin.
See. It's not love. Sirius doesn't know what it is but it's not that.
After a few more seconds he kicks Remus under the table, causing the other boy to look up in exasperation. But this time when their eyes meet Sirius smiles the way he knows Remus likes. Feeling his insides grow warm when Remus smiles back - even if he's a little delicate about it.
Sirius isn't in love with James Potter.
But he might be in love with Remus.

Shouting From the Rooftops.
A Jegulus Oneshot
(Prompt: Try. From a random word generator.)
~~~ ~~~
"We can't go through this again, James. I gave you my final answer." Regulus hissed as they walked through the corridors to the Slytherin dungeons.
James persisted anyways, nearly having to jog to keep up with Regulus' brisk pace, "I don’t understand why you hate the idea so much. I thought you liked being with me?"
Regulus groaned, "I do, you know I do, but what you're asking is impossible."
"What's so impossible about this? We're already seeing each other in secret, Reggie. I don't want to hide my feelings for you anymore!"
James knew he was being too loud, he didn't care. So what if people over heard him? So what if people stared?
James was in love with Regulus.
And he wasn't ashamed of that.
"Keep your voice down." Regulus muttered, "You shouldn't let people hear you. You know what they would think-"
"I don't care what they think."
"I care. Did you ever think about that?" He snapped. James scoffed,
"Why the hell do you think I've kept my mouth shut for the last three months?" He stopped walking, needing to catch his breath.
Regulus came to a stop just in front of him, staring at him with the hardened expression James had grown used to whenever they talked in public.
James sighed, "I want to see your smile, and not just in your bedroom. I want to sit with you in the sun and laugh and be who we are without all of these fucking secrets."
"These secrets are what's keeping you from being harassed by the entire school." Regulus rose an eyebrow, "I won't put my infatuations above your safety. No matter how much you beg."
"And what if I don't get harassed? What if nobody cares? Your brother is gay. He's been openly dating Remus for three years and nobody gives a shit about them."
"They're different-" Regulus started.
"How? Because you're a Slytherin? Because I'm a Gryffindor? Merlin, if people really cared that much about inter-house relationships you'd think there'd be a lot less of them, wouldn't you?"
"James-"
"No. I'm not finished." He huffed, "I don't want to hide you anymore. I want to take you to hogsmeade with me and my friends. I want to buy you butterbeer and be ridiculously fucking corny and hold doors open for you and give you my jumpers when you're cold. I want those things with you, Reggie."
"I want them too. It's not that I don’t..."
"Then why won't you just try?"
Regulus exploded then, "Because I can't! You know I can't! This is wrong, I-"
"Why?" James asked, cutting him off, "Who says this has to be wrong? Who says I can't love you exactly how you're supposed to be loved? Who says you're not allowed to love me back?"
"What about my brother?" He whispered, "What about Sirius? You're just going to waltz up and tell him you've been seeing me in secret?"
"Why not?"
"I'm not going to be the one to tell him i've been sneaking around with his best friend behind his back!"
"Then I'll tell him! I will gladly be the one to tell him the good news, because that's what this is. This is the best thing that's ever happened to me, Reg. Sirius is my best friend and I hate keeping things from him. You know how badly I've wanted to tell him about you."
"He'll never forgive us." Regulus looked away, "He won't understand. I'm his brother, your his best friend."
"He'll understand. I know he will. Just give me a day. Please. Just one day. If you don't like it we can pretend to break up, I swear."
"James-"
James kept going, not wanting to hear whatever excuse he came up with this time,
"I want to love you, Regulus. I want to walk down the halls holding your hand. I want to scream at the top of my lungs from the towers that you're mine. I want to give you the entire fucking world. Please just let me try."
There was a long silence. James tilted Regulus' chin so they met eyes. Regulus' were brimming with tears,
"Fine." He whispered, his voice breaking, "We can try."
And that was all the confirmation James needed.
He kissed him. It was deep and agonozingly beautiful. He kissed him until neither of them could remember how to breathe.
"I love you." He whispered against Regulus' lips, "And I don't care who knows it."
Regulus knew he should hesitate, he should look around to make sure nobody was watching, but something about the way James was smiling at him, something in the earnestness in his voice made him soften,
"I love you too, Jamie." He murmured.
And they kissed again. Right there in the middle of the hall.
They went straight to the Gryffindor common room, Regulus' restless hand tucked neatly in James' sure one.
When they told the others, Sirius was the first to hug them, congratulating them on coming out.
"We've known for a while, mate." Sirius smiled, ruffling James' hair, "It's good you finally felt ready to tell us."
The rest of their friends followed suit in congratulating them, the room was filled with smiles and laughter. James had never felt so happy.
And that was it.
From that point on the pair of them went everywhere together, they ate their meals side by side, they took strolls by the lake with their fingers intertwined. They went to The Three Broomsticks and everyone could see James holding open the door for him, putting down the money for both of their drinks as Regulus fidgeted with the tag on his jumper, the tag that read J.F.P.
And if you happened to hear shouting that sounded an awful lot like James Potter's voice coming from the astronomy tower, it's best to keep walking, he'll be there for a while.
Okay! I have this fic idea. Wolfstar and Jegulus. Ready?
So, Remus and Sirius have been on/off dating since Hogwarts. They’re currently off and have been for the last year, the longest break they’ve had so far.
Regulus didn’t go to Hogwarts, and runs into Sirius one day at a cafe and they get to catching up. Regulus and James flirt but, despite prompting from Regulus, James won’t ask him out.
So once the brothers are vibing, maybe a month after re-meeting, Sirius introduces Regulus to Remus and they hit it off. Platonic Moonwater is living it up.
And then Regulus decides to introduce his friends to his brother and the others. They get along alright(ish) but Remus really hits it off with everyone (mostly…)
So Remus starts hanging out with the Slytherin Skittles more often.
Say like 2-3 months later and they’re all hanging out (Skittles and Remus) and Barty goes, “I’m the opposite of gullible, I never fall for your shit Regulus” after some conversation about Regulus’ tricks.
And it gives Regulus an idea.
So later that night when they’re alone, Regulus comes to Remus with said idea.
There’s a fancy social event happening in like two weeks that Regulus is invited too. And he’s got a plus one. So he suggests Remus and him go as a “couple“ to prank Barty. And Regulus isn’t supposed to know Barty will be there (you can thank Evan for telling him) so it’ll seem like Remus and Regulus are just trying to get away from everyone and be together in secret.
Remus is in since he’s been finding Barty a bit annoying and wants to prove that he is gullible. Plus he’s doubting Sirius intent behind his recent flirting with Remus and he could use a fun night out to distract himself.
So they go. They go and they trick Barty so fast it’s laughable… but Regulus has been weird all night. He keeps sneaking glances at the door to the big fancy room they’re in, and 30 minutes ago he asked Remus if it’d be alright if they kissed to fuck with his homophobic boss who’s here… except they still haven’t done it? And Regulus isn’t super touchy.
Just when Remus is about to ask what’s going on, Regulus turns to him and announces they must kiss. And they do.
It’s alright. Regulus makes some joke about Sirius’ pining making more sense now he knows what a good kisser Remus is. And Remus doesn’t even get to ask about the “pining” because from the other side of the room, a very familiar voice yells “WHAT THE FUCK?”
And then Sirius and James are stood in front of Remus and Regulus.
Oh. That’s why he’s been watching the door. Regulus knew Barty would tell James, to be a pain, and that these two would come here and see their kiss and then, what? Beg for them back?
Regulus played Remus. The genius.
Anyway, Sirius starts talking, contradicting himself every next sentences, going from saying he’s happy for them and doesn’t want to lose them, to calling them names and accusing Regulus of backstabbing him. Then he leaves. James whispers, “I should’ve asked sooner Reg. Taken my head out my arse. I’m sorry.” And follows Sirius. Clearly Barty told them what they told him. They’ve “been together” for two months. James and Sirius both thought him and Regulus were an actual real couple.
Remus freezes for a moment but then he heads to the exit to follow them, Regulus close behind. And Remus shoots him a look. An annoyed one.
So they get outside and before Sirius and James can get in a taxi, Reg yells “WE’RE NOT DATING YOU DICKS!”
Sirius turns around and silently walks over to Regulus with the most murderous look on his face. And whispers “What?”
Then Remus decides to interject, “We’re not dating. For the record though, we could. You two have been fucking hopeless at communicating with us. Hell, we’ve been broken up over a year Sirius.”
And Sirius turns to Remus, and with a slightly raised but wobbly voice, he answers, “We’ve been on and off again since we started dating Remus. We weren’t supposed to end on OFF. I still have the fucking ring I was going to give you before you broke up with me, it’s in the corner of my room. And while you’ve been kissing my brother, I’ve been planning a big gesture to ask you out again for months. Fuck, I was going to do it next week. The anniversary of when we met.”
(btw Remus broke up with Sirius but because Sirius was pulling away and they weren’t talking. They’re at equal fault but where Remus has been trying to talk, Sirius has been brushing it off and just flirting).
But long story short, Remus kisses Sirius and they’re all happy again. Oh and they agree to get some couples therapy. Cause that’s always important.
Then James makes his cutesy speech, going all, “I should’ve gotten over myself sooner” and “I wanted to make it perfect” and “I thought maybe you didn’t actually like me and just liked out flirting thingy” and, after some torture from Regulus, pretending to say no, they hook up too.
And everyone’s happy :)
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love! ❤️
OMG, thank you for the ask! Self rec five fics... okay...
Those Whom The Gods Love Die Young - An experiment in writing for me. This is the tale of the marauders told as an old folk tale.
So the spirits, with their love for the boys, granted them their dreams. “But be warned,” the wind whispered as the boys entered the forest again, “the young mortal men whom the gods favor are destined to die young.” But the boys did not hear the wind over their boisterous camaraderie, and the warning went unheard.
Am I To Suffer This Constant Stream of Interruption? - A fluffy little Teddy and Victoire piece. Their first date keeps getting interrupted by James Sirius Potter.
"Do you think that kid has ever had a thought he didn't immediately have to shout out loud?" Teddy asked Vic while they watched James skip up the street and tackle his cousin Fred, who was too distracted with the latest Firebolt 300 in the window of the quidditch shop to notice James, into a bale of hay.
Your Friend, James - Another fun little writing experiment. An epistolary fic with James and Lily sending each other letters (and falling in love).
Lily, You have finally found out Padfoot’s dark secret. He is not an aristocratic heir to a great fortune, as he has led all to believe. He actually has an unbearable Scouse accent. Get him good and drunk and it comes out. Wormtail came over the other day and helped me practice quidditch. Ever since I told the lads that McGongall invited a pro scout to watch me play next year, Peter’s been dedicating time to help me train. I think he’s hoping that if I go pro, I’ll get him free tickets. Which I would if that were to happen. He doesn’t need to become my personal trainer (especially since, Merlin, I love the chap, but he is not the best at flying a broom and throwing a quaffle at the same time.) It's hard to practice quidditch by oneself, though, so I appreciate the effort.
Does Permanent Mean Forever? - My head canon for marauders and getting tattoos.
“Excellent, Wormy!” James clapped his hands, “Yes, that’s exactly what we will do! Let’s take the Knight Bus to London and we’ll get our animagus forms tattooed on ourselves. Well, Moony will get his you-know-what.” “Fantastic,” Sirius said, sitting up straight in the chair, “I propose Prongs gets antlers tattooed on his arse.” Remus’ face darkened as he took another drink, "There is absolutely no way in hell I am getting a wolf tattoo.” “Aw, come on, Moony,” Peter whined, “Don’t ruin the fun!”
Interesting House Guests - A new fic but one that I had been thinking about for a long time. Sirius invites his friends to stay over at Grimmauld Place one summer. The seeds to him running away are planted.
“Oh, baby Reggie wouldn’t have anything as unseemly as muggle bathing suit models on his walls!” James exclaimed in mock horror. “No, much worse, he’s been clipping out news stories of the Death Eater weirdos and sticking them on his wall.” “Ugh,” grimaced Peter, “Why waste precious wall space with dudes wearing masks when you could have naked ladies.” “Exactly my point, Pete. Anyway, Get up,” Sirius nudged Peter with his foot. “I haven’t finished the tour yet.”
OKAY, FINALLY DOING THE AU THING BUT AS BULLET POINTS;
The Hamilton AU:
- Janus found Virgil randomly and adopted him
- Logan was kinda a lawyer
- Remus worked overseas/wasn’t pictured much but it was mentioned he might’ve been serving in the military or somethin’
- Patton and Roman were friends
- Roman was married to someone else, a woman, who would help hide him and she had a daughter from a pervious relationship so he stepped into the dad role for her
- Logan was more of the “you did WHAT?” kind of guy and I forget who did what but they needed a lawyer and Patton found him and he was just like ..*sigh* why… (could’ve sworn it was Roman or Virgil)
- Janus took care of Virgil and was his dad and was protective
- I listed to Satisfied a lot and it became Roman’s song (basically)
- -100/10 I’m afraid of judgement although it was interesting
(This one was created in like late 2020 so judge my past self, not my current self please, I know it’s awful already)
Fantasy;
- ALL TIME FAVORITE AU
- Basically, everything that has happened in Sanders Sides did actually happen here
- There was this door at the very edge of the imagination (imagination is like this cool garden)
- When you go through it there’s this new world with like Dragons and waterfalls and mountains
-In the AU, there’s a person who is part dragon and has wings but is human and she hides from everyone cuz she’s scared
- Then it turns out that her own brother who’s not part dragon is totally against her and betrays her and the entire world there so she has to finally talk to someone
-She gets Roman and he relays it and everyone’s like “WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL US SOONER????” towards her (there’s a lot of what the hell moments in my AUs)
- 8/10 love this one because of how pretty the other world was
This one was created summer of 2021 and 90% created while I was swinging and spacing out
Mystery/Secret/Split AU;
- This one I still sometimes incorporate into current ones!
-Basically, at one point, the light sides and dark sides were friends and all lived in the same area- no need for travel they were all there
- Janus and Patton were both the leaders of them
- Then they started arguing and it all broke into two- Janus being the leader of the Darksides and Patton the light sides
- They were all young when it happened but Remus and Roman remembered playing together and sharing a room as kids
- That area was abandoned
- Then, Roman and Virgil are messing around (present) and find this secret door and open it by stealing Patton’s keys
- Annnnnddd it shuts behind them and they’re stuck but they’re intrigued by what’s there so they look around
- There was a bookshelf, Logan’s, and it was all dusty and cobwebbed
- They keep looking and find Roman and Remus’s old room and remember EVERYTHING
- They get VERY angry
- Meanwhile, everyone’s like “uhh where’d they go??” And Patton realizes that his keys aren’t in his nightstand anymore and Janus scolds him
- Everyone’s trying to lie to Thomas as to why Roman and Virgil aren’t there (a lot of the lies coming from Remus) and he starts to get suspicious
- Roman eventually realizes that the imaginations connect and Patton comes out and realizes what happened
- 10/10 still use it and still like it
Was created also in 2021 but more like fall of 2021 after I had a dream and went HUH THATS COOL I CAN CHANGE SOME PARTS (dream was weird, Roman and Virgil were getting hit by these two kids with like water balloons and then they chased the kids and then Roman threw one back at the kids and they went inside and NOBODY was there and they were freaked out)
I really hope that these don’t like upset anybody- I’ve been timid to share them for that reason, especially the Hamilton one, so I already know there’s some “…” parts but I don’t make AUs like those anymore anyway- but I think I’ll start posting more recent fanfics that I hope to make in order to get better at writing
Tell me about the crime fic
oh I love you so much for asking about this!! ok so 'be gay do crime' (this name is truly growing on me maybe ill just keep it) where do I even begin???
ok I think I will just start by writing some of my ideas for it and see where this goes...
right so one of the story lines I am most excited to write about, funnily enough, is Peter! I have so many ideas for him. first of all he has a mad scientist vibe in his lil poison making underground bunker lab. this guy has zero fear. like, there are no windows in this bunker. he is experimenting and creating new poisons. no fucks are given he is just down there living his best life. OH And his friendship with jamesss!!! god I am so excited about this it is so fucking intense but like in a very weird way. when I finish working on regulus's pov chapter and start working on peter's just know that I will be sending you extensive voice notes about them. (I don't want to say too much here because yknow, gotta keep some things a mystery). I will say though that I am very excited to write his childhood bits because the scene where he comes out as trans to James is so precious to me.
oh and JAMES. god what a mess. he thinks he has everything under control. he thinks he is such a chill guy. honey... sweetheart... I love you... I adore you... but you are a MESS. like, there are so many complicated things going on for him and I will be focusing quite a lot on his relationship with his parents. I know that probably some people will not like that they aren't portrayed as the perfect family but that is just not them in this. the fact that Effie is in the assassin network but Fleamont isn't?? like thats just such a fucked up situation. because when the moment comes for him to choose whether he will also 'sell his soul' to the network he has to betray one of them. and already his parents have a complicated relationship because of their crazily different views on morality and just life in general so being in the middle of that? yeah James has a lot of things he needs to address in that brain of his. it also doesn't help that his bestie sirius is also a MESS so together... yeah
ANYWAY MOVING ON
I wrote this whole thing without even mentioning regulus who's chapter I have been working on this whole time... but YEAH so regulus is a force to be reckoned with. you know how in the vampire diaries they can just switch off their emotions? yeah so that is what regulus thinks he has done. he is very delusional. but it works for him (I mean, it doesn't, he is fucked. but he thinks he is in control so thats all good... it isn't... but-) what else? oh yes how could I not mention how fucking sexy this lil guy is when he murders people? fucking hell. oh and also him and James. lol. hehe. giggling.
ok I really do need to go to sleep soon so I shall do remus and then perhaps another post for the girls tommorow because I have PLANS for them and they are all so sexy and smart and insane and psychotic and - <3 oh and also Evan and Barty!!! i love them In this so much and you will love Barty. I will make you
REMUS. hehe. I am blushing... psychological torture. the power this man holds without having to raise a finger. I just- like he is just a man on a mission and I love that for him. he truly does not let anything get to him. well I mean there's sirius but ummm... nah... there isn't... remus told me to tell you there isn't... he is actually threatening me right now so I must shut up because he is just such a mysterious guy... can't have people knowing his secrets. and by secrets I mean anything about him. I am afraid I have already said too much.
ok I will just end this on- PANDORA. lobotomies. cannibalism. the need to consume the ones you love.... hmmmmmm
#be gay do crime#this was so fun#I realise I have not really explained much of the background info whoops#if anyone has questions about this always feel free to come talk to me#my asks and dms are always open#lol 'the crime fic' makes it sound so much less unhinged than it is me and lily giggled. lovingly of course <3
10 Lines Tag Game
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway!
I've seen this going around and even though I haven't been tagged I thought it would be a fun way to assess my own writing style now that I have nearly 10 fics published on AO3.
I've Built My Life Around You (ALOTO, Jess/Lupe, 250 words)
“Can’t believe it’s been ten years,” Jess says into the silent stadium. It’s not hard for Lupe to believe at all, actually, now that they’re back at Beyer.
Kiss Cam (ALOTO, Jess/Lupe, 250 words)
“We need the people in these two seats to make out,” the one with the braid says, shoving bills and a piece of paper into his hand.
keep you like an oath (ALOTO, Jess/Lupe, 250 words)
By unspoken agreement, Jess and Lupe keep Vi’s a secret—even from those who would be welcome. Lupe probably has a number of complicated reasons for it, but Jess only has one: she’s selfish as hell.
your love's got me trippin' on you (ALOTO, Jess/Lupe, 250 words)
“A beautiful drive into deep right by Brown, and DiGiovanni looks like she’s—yes, she’s going for third… Whoa! Woman down! DiGiovanni appears to have tripped! Rough luck for the Belles' first basewoman. Well, that’ll end the inning, and the Peaches hold the Belles scoreless through the fourth.”
red is the fire in our veins (ALOTO, Jess/Lupe, 250 words)
It was inevitable, really, a foregone conclusion, that Lupe’s gaze would be drawn to the muscled thigh next to her that’s outlined in insolent red.
Two Fingers Means Curveball (ALOTO, Jess/Lupe, 250 words)
“Miss García. Come with me for a minute.”
Love, In Deed and In Truth (ALOTO, Jess/Lupe, 250 words)
Lupe’s belief in God was built on an ethereal foundation of faith, but Lupe’s belief in Jess was built with the earthly planks of trust.
it's not enough (this time) (HP, Remus/Sirius, 2500 words)
If only we’d made a map of all of Britain, Sirius thought wildly as he made another random turn in Surrey. Then I could have stopped Remus before it came to this. I could have seen where he was, who he was with. I could have stopped him.
Dinner, Interrupted (HP, James/Lily, 150 words)
“He shoots. He scores! Another ten points to Gryffindor. Potter’s on fire tonight. Look, he’s taken possession of the Quaffle again! Excellent broom handling as he dodges left and right. That hoop is wide open… goal!”
I’ve only published nine fics on AO3, but here’s the first line of my portion of my Jess/Lupe WIP with Molly/squidgilator:
Lupe has no idea how much sleep she gets that night, other than not much.
Tagging: @broomsticks @everythingbutcoldfire @mollymarymarie @squidgilator @tahtahfornow and anyone else who wants to do it!
A few observations below the cut (feel free to ignore):
As an ardent dialogue-hater, I'm surprised that half of my fics start with dialogue! The fact that two of those are sports commentary is giving me a good laugh. Apparently I missed my true calling?
In my opinion, my Wolfstar fic—the only thing I've published that's over 250 words—has one of the weaker openings, which is a bit of a bummer because I actually edited that fic. I'm proud of the closing lines of each section though! I'm telling myself that this opening being kinda meh means I've improved as a writer since last summer.
It looks like I tend to use fairly short and straightforward sentences? I'd love to hear if any other patterns stand out to you lol
#billie writes fic#tag game#(that i was not tagged in)#(I promise I’m done catching up with tag games now)#(sorry for tagging some of you repeatedly)
was that grant gustin? oh no no, that was just james potter, a canon character from harry potter. they are twenty one years old, use he/him, and are aware that they are not actually from washington dc. too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
how long has your character been here:
two and a half years now, his age is closer to twenty three
what is your character’s job:
he's a secret service agent!
where has your character been pulled from in their fandom:
initially, only up to the fidelius charm, but as of halloween 2021, he remembers up to his death
has any magic affected your character:
none beyond altering his memories for a bit
and any other information you might find useful for us and the other members to know:
james potter my beloved. he was born to rich pureblood parents, after they thought they couldn't have kids, so he grew up rather spoiled and arrogant
he was sorted into gryffindor at hogwarts, and immediately became friends with sirius black, remus lupin, and peter pettigrew, while keeping up an intense rivarly with severus snape
he was absolutely an arrogant little fuck as a kid. he was a rich kid who was good at sports, of course he turned out that way. but he ultimately has a good heart, even if he can absolutely be kind of a dick sometimes
he was head over heels for lily evans from the time he was eleven, but she had zero interest in him until he grew the hell up and acted like a mature adult. they started dating as teenagers, and just barely beat teen pregnancy, good for them!
war time pregnancy is just as cringe though, so they did have a bit of a shotgun wedding after joining the order of the phoenix. they knew the order was fighting for what was right, and james was eager to join up as soon as he turned seventeen
their son, harry, ended up being prophesied as the chosen one who would defeat voldemort, and he and lily went into hiding to protect themselves and their son, but unfortunately they were betrayed
peter gave away their location, and james sacrificed himself to give lily time to get harry and get out of the house. he and lily both died, and his son was sent to his in laws to be raised in a muggle community
in dc, james is still a cocky little shit, but he's mostly grown out of the arrogance and swaggering of his youth. he has enough money that he doesn't really need to work, but he does so anyway, because he hates being idle. he does throw that money around a bit, but more in a 'why not' kind of way then a 'show off' kind of way
he's also definitely furious having heard how his son grew up. even if sirius wasn't available or legitimate reasons, vernon and petunia would have been his absolute last choice to raise his son, and that will never change
(Hi, it’s me. First ask of the new blog. I can’t wait to see where this will go. Also I’m not sure if you (Lukas) want people coming over from the last blog to use the same sign off. Mine was Glow Eyes. Or if you want us to come up with new ones. Either way is fine but I wasn’t sure. Anyway onto the ask.)
Hello Roman. I hope you enjoyed Venice. I’ve never been myself but it sounds beautiful. I’m just a friendly traveler from another dimension and was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about yourself. Thanks in advance.
(You can come up with a new sign off if u want to C:)
Roman stopped abruptly as you appeared in the middle of the way. Remus had zoned out while following him so he bonked right into his brother's backside.
"Look! it's some....thing!"
"Want me to poke it with a stick?"
You began telling your message to which Roman jumped back and swung both his arms and tail around to try and keep you away. He did it in a very sophisticated and heroic way....obviously.
"It speaks!"
Remus cracked his knuckles "I'm getting a very sharp stick. Got it"
While Remus was looking around in his pockets for a knife you had time to say the rest of your message.
"Wait!" Roman waved at her brother to not stab "It's just an avid fan of mine! A secret admirer! No worry, I will gladly tell you about my humble self!" She had a big stupid smile on her face "To start off I am incredibly pretty, talented and hard working"
Remus sighed sadly and found a random spot on the wall to stab at instead. To be around the same eye level as you Roman hunched down on the ground.
"I am Very popular also! As you can tell by the fact that you wanted to speak to me! Instead of that thing"
"He's only popular among random humansssss" Remus teased. A bit of the wall paint had started to go off "No one gives a single fuck about some random succubi in hell"
"I would be far more popular over here if I wasn't stuck in the same squadron as a Certain Someone who sucks at his job! Remmm! now you distracted me! I was supposed to talk about myself ,not shit talk you! Annyyywaaay, I'm a bit of a nerd for humans. I just Love all the stuff they come up with! Like art, theater, time, gender, It's all so creative! And pretty!"
"I like when humans put demons in their media so I can laugh at how wrong they are" It was about the only human media Remus ever looked at without someone else nagging him into looking at it.
"But it's so sad! I was totallly born in the wrong generation you see. I'm so jealous of Remy and Emile who got to be around when impressionism was born! Can you IMAGINE meeting Claude Monet!? John Bauer!? And don't even get me started on the demons who got to be around for the Rococo times! The romanticism! FUCKING RENAISSANCE!?"
"Bro you're going to explode if you keep thinking about that- Hey look I'm like 5 stabs around from creating an impromptu glory hole in this wall!"
Roman rolled his eyes and turned back to you "My dear fan, I know he is annoying but at least his existence makes me even more amazing. Believe it or not but we're not just incredibly similar, we're twins! Pretty unusual for demons I know. Very cool"
"HAH! HOLE! Take that wall!"
(The day for this @wolfstarmicrofic prompt has long passed, so let's just say that the same week is good enough😅
This was inspired by the lyric I can't be your friend, I can't be your lover, I can't be the reason we hold back each other from Conan Gray's Memories)
2nd: Reasonable
Sirius can't move on from what was between them, Remus can move past what happened between them, and sometimes, loving each other just isn't enough. (Warning: Angst)
How To Stop Being In Love
Sirius looks down from the balustrade at the garden, where the party is still in full swing, people enjoying themselves on the makeshift dancefloor with Lily in her elegant white dress and James in his fitted suit shining at the centre. Remus comes up next to him and looks down as well.
Sirius doesn’t know what makes him ask the question. He surely wasn’t planning on asking the question, but he asks anyway. “Do you think that could’ve ever been us? If I hadn’t screwed up those years ago, I mean.”
He doesn’t look at Remus while he says it, but from the corner of his eye he can see the surprised expression on his face.
“Sirius... We only dated for a few months back when we were fifteen.”
Sirius shakes his head. “I know it doesn’t make sense, but I find myself wondering...”
“Where is this coming from?” Remus asks. He’s looking at Sirius, who is still refusing to meet his gaze.
“I don’t know,” Sirius shrugs. “The feeling that comes with a wedding? A melancholic mood?” He downs his glass of champagne. “The alcohol?”
Remus looks away. “It’s impossible to say. If one thing hadn’t happened six years ago, it could’ve gone wrong after in so many other ways.”
“You mean I could’ve screwed up in so many other ways,” Sirius replies bitterly.
Remus turns back to Sirius and searches his face. “You really still see yourself like that?”
There’s so much compassion in Remus’ voice, it verges on pity and Sirius can barely take it. “Don’t you?”
“You’re a good person, Sirius,” Remus says emphatically. “I see you as a good person. Merlin, Sirius, you have done so much for me. You befriended me when I thought no one else would, you stayed my friend when you found out my darkest secret, not only that, you did something that should’ve been impossible just to make things easier for me, you offered me a place to stay when I had nowhere to go, and whenever life gets hard you show up for me. All of that more than outweighs one stupid mistake you made when we were dumb teenagers. When things were rough and you were in a vulnerable place, and Snape knew exactly how to push your buttons, and you snapped in an impulsive burst of anger. Sirius,” Remus says intently. “I have well and truly forgiven you a long time ago.”
Sirius finally turns to look at Remus. “But it changed something between us,” he says almost desperately. “We never got back to the way we were before.”
“In a way, that had nothing to do with you,” Remus says softly, his eyes cast downward. “Not really. The incident made me realise that relationships are so much more fragile and fleeting than friendships. Relationships end so much more often than friendships. For me, it’s not a given to have people in my life. I became afraid of entering into relationships, because I was afraid of losing people. It wasn’t specifically about you or what happened between us anymore. It was a fear that must’ve always been inside me.”
“But what I did triggered it.”
“Maybe. But if it hadn’t, something else would have.”
“But if we had still been together then, if we had been a strong, healthy couple, we could’ve talked about it, and I could’ve helped you get over your fears,” Sirius keeps insisting.
“This pointless speculation.” Remus is starting to sound frustrated, and Sirius should just drop it, but...
“You never came back to me.”
“What?”
“You got over your fears eventually,” Sirius explains. “You started dating again. You’re dating now. Hell, you’re here with Fabian! But you never... you never came back to me.”
“We’re not those same boys anymore,” Remus says. “What was I supposed to do? Walk up to you years later and say ‘hey, I’m finally done fighting my inner demons now, let’s pick up from when we dated for a few months back when we were fifteen’.”
Sirius looks away, but not quick enough to hide his expression.
Remus stares at him. “Were you... Were you actually waiting for that?”
“Not to pick up from the boys we were,” Sirius snaps. “But to try again as the men we became? Maybe. Yes. Why not? I know we’re not the same people anymore, but for a part, we are. We haven’t changed completely. Some things still remain. We still understand each other with a single look, when I walk into a room, no matter how crowded, you’re still the first person I see, there’s still this unspoken something between us, this chemistry, this connection, and everyone can tell. Remus, I still feel so much for you.”
Remus looks taken aback by the urgency in Sirius’ voice. “That... may be so, but... in our case those things are part of a close friendship.”
“Because ever since I messed up, you’ve been so extremely cautious to never cross that line into something more than friendship anymore!”
“Things have changed,” Remus says curtly.
“Because of what I did,” Sirius concludes.
“I told you, that doesn’t-”
“But it does!” Sirius exclaims. “It does, and it’s fine, but just bloody say it! Stop trying to pretend like it doesn’t matter anymore when it so clearly does!”
“You know, what? Fine!” Remus snaps. “You want me to say it? I’ll say it! When you did what you did, it didn’t just break my heart, it almost broke me entirely! And you’re the only person who will ever be able to do that to me, and I can’t risk it happening again. I can’t. No matter what there once was between us, what there might be between us, I can’t. I just can’t. I need you in my life, Sirius, and I almost lost you once by overplaying my hand and being so arrogant to think I could have more than friendship, and I’m not doing that again.”
“I’m sorry.” Sirius is startled by how broken his voice sounds, and when a drop falls on his arm does he realise there are tears streaming down his face. “You don’t trust me not to ruin things again, and I-”
“Don’t!” Remus interrupts. “Please, don’t. Don’t say you understand. I know I’m not being reasonable, I know I’m not being fair to you. You shouldn’t be judged for one mistake you made when you were young for the rest of your life. Perhaps that’s all the more reason why we shouldn’t be together. I can’t move past that mistake, and you deserve better than that.”
“Maybe we shouldn’t,” Sirius says softly. “And I want to be your friend, of course I do, but I just don’t know how to stop being in love with you. I don’t know how to be your friend without longing for more whenever you’re near me. I care about you so much, I can’t move on.”
“And I don’t know how to be more than friends without fearing it’ll end up ruining us, maybe for good this time,” Remus replies, his voice trembling. “I care about you so much, I can’t risk it. There’s just too much to lose.”
“Where does that leave us?” Sirius whispers.
“I don’t-”
“Rem!” A tipsy Fabian comes running up to them and throws an arm around Remus. “Rem, here you are! Do you know how many good songs you have missed? Come on, dance with me!” He takes Remus’ hand to drag him towards the dancefloor, when he notices Sirius. “Oh, I’m sorry. Do you mind?”
Sirius’ eyes are intently fixed on Remus, who’s staring back at him with eyes filled with conflicting emotions, as Sirius speaks. “Go ahead. Please, have a good time, and never mind me.”
hi! omg for the small details for fictional kisses the 4 and 41 are so cute every time! it would be so sweet if you write them please
Thanks so much for requesting!
I’ll write both (I’ll tag you in the second one), but I’m not sure which one this is going to be (I’ll find out when I get there lmao)
4 - breaking the kiss but instantly pressing your lips back together
Remus was fine. Completely fine. He definitely wasn’t gripping his bottle so hard it was on the brink of shattering. There was absolutely no way that he was watching Benjy Fenwick chatting up Sirius at the Gryffindor party.
“Moony, I’m just going to take this.” James carefully pried the bottle, which had a crack working it’s way through, from his hands. “You know, if you want Benjy to leave Sirius alone, maybe you should go over and talk to him?”
Remus glanced at him for a moment, struggling to keep his eyes away from Sirius, who was now laughing at something Benjy had said. Sure, Benjy was funny, but he wasn’t that funny! What was making Sirius laugh so hard? He contemplated between thanking Benjy for letting him see that Sirius Black grin, or slapping him, because he wanted to be the one to make him smile like that.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He said simply, through gritted teeth. James couldn’t help but chuckle then.
“Remus, I hate to break it to you, but you’re shit at keeping secrets. You look like you want to set Benjy on fire.”
Honestly, Remus had thought of that (fleetingly), but had decided he wouldn’t be able to do that, anyway.
“Just talk to him! You never know!”
He did know.
At least, he thought he did.
Remus and Sirius had gone out a few times over the Hogsmeade weekends. Remus was absolutely, 100% gone for him, but he wasn’t sure about Sirius.
Sirius flirted with everyone around him, and Remus couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that hit him every time this happened. The same, unsure, insecure nagging in the pit of his stomach, asking why the hell Sirius would ever feel the same way, that he was probably just passing the time, waiting until he got bored to move on to the next fling.
He wasn’t sure Sirius would want to make things between them exclusive, so he had avoided asking. It wasn’t until he saw James’ confident, reassuring expression, and turned back to find Benjy reaching out to squeeze Sirius’ arm, that he decided there was no time like the present.
If he was going to get his heart broken, he may as well just get it over with.
“Hey, Padfoot, everything okay?” He asked, standing just a little too close to Sirius, in the hopes of sending Benjy a more subtle message. He didn’t seem to catch on.
“Oh, Siri and I were just talking about the upcoming Hogsmeade weekend.” God, Remus hated that nickname. It sounded so insanely stupid. Especially coming out of Benjy’s bloody mouth.
“Were you now?” He hardly even noticed Sirius watching him with an amused smile.
“Yeah, we were.” Benjy shot Remus a glare, and Remus practically wanted to hex that look off his face. “So, Sirius, if you’re free-“
“I’m not.” Sirius cut him off without hesitating, eyes fixed on Remus. Benjy frowned, caught off guard by the sudden rejection.
“Oh, okay, maybe another time then?”
“I’m good. Thanks.”
“R-right, okay.” He walked away, slightly stunned, the two of them watching him walk away, before Sirius dropped his voice to a whisper.
“Jealous?” Remus couldn’t waste another minute.
“I want to be your boyfriend.” He said quickly, as Sirius arched an eyebrow, surprised. Still, Remus kept going, undeterred. “I know we said we’d just go on a few dates casually, no commitment or anything, but I- I want to be able to hold your hand in the Great Hall, without worrying that it wasn’t part of… whatever this is. I want to be able to call you my boyfriend, and I don’t- I don’t want to have to worry about pricks like Benjy dragging you off to the astronomy tower.”
“Benjy wishes.” Sirius muttered with a sly smile. “So… are you asking me out? Officially?”
“I guess so. If you want to, anyway.”
“If? I’m yours, Moony.”
Theirs eyes met half a second before their lips did, suddenly oblivious to the packed common room. Remus’ hand cupped Sirius’ cheek, as what had started as a small, chaste kiss deepened pretty quickly, becoming the kind of kiss that made Remus go weak at the knees, overwhelmed by the taste of peppermint on his tongue that was just so undeniably Sirius.
Remus went to pull away after a moment, lips barely separating before until a hand gripped the front of his jumper, pulling an all too willing Remus back in for half a second.
“Sorry, just didn’t want it to end.” Sirius whispered, breath ghosting across Remus’ face.
“Don’t apologise.” Remus’ brain was malfunctioning, really, hardly even getting those two words out.
All he could think about was that Sirius was stood in front of him, and Sirius was his.
No more anxiety, no more awkwardness, no more uncertainty.
It was definitely too soon to say anything to Sirius, but he knew, deep down, that Sirius was it for him. Sirius was his heart, his soul, his everything.
(I got really carried away with the novelty of the flirting so ignore how little of the oneshot is the actual kiss I swear the other one will be more dedicated to the kiss.)
Can you do one where Sirius gets hit on by a very pushy and handsy jerk who makes him uncomfortable (maybe due to past experiences?) and James gets excessively overprotective even when they aren’t even together yet at this time? I’m thinking of a feelings realization story where when questioned, James realizes that his overprotectiveness is not just because they are best mates
Sirius wished they weren't in a muggle club, because if they'd been in the Wizarding World, he would've been able to tell the arsehole that if he didn't leave him alone, Sirius would hex him-- and he’d follow through with the threat-- but they were surrounded by muggles, and Sirius was trying to behave himself because exposing magic once had been forgiven, but that wouldn't happen a second time. Sirius was trying to be responsible and all the rubbish that went along with it, and that meant not hitting this bloke with a confundus charm so he would walk the other way.
"Look mate," Sirius said, struggling to keep his voice even, "I already said no. I'm not interested."
"It's only a drink," he insisted. "What harm is one drink?"
"I dunno, maybe the fact that I already said no five times now?" Also, the fact that Sirius was busy pining for his best mate. It took up a lot of time, which people (read: Remus) didn't seem to believe even when he did tell them.
"There's no need to get all defensive."
"I think there's every reason to get defensive," Sirius muttered.
"One drink isn't going to kill you. We can talk, you can get to know me a little better, and then you can make an informed decision."
"Why the hell would I want to get to know you better?"
"See," he said, draping an arm around Sirius's shoulders, "it's prickly answers like that, that tell me you need a drink to help you loosen up."
Sirius looked at the foreign arm on him like it was the Giant Squid's tentacle. Actually, that wasn't fair. He liked the Giant Squid. He did not like this bloke. This was more like finding a bit of vomit on his coat after a night out. It was wholly unwelcome, as well as disgusting. "I'm plenty loose, but not with you. Feel free to take this as your sign that you should find someone else to stalk."
The man laughed, as if that had been a joke instead of a suggestion.
"I think he told you to bugger off," James said from behind him. When Sirius looked, James was glaring and had a challenging tilt to his head to match his rather angry expression.
"Uh-huh," the man said, not agreeing but acknowledging that James had said something. "And who are you?"
"I'm his best mate, and he told you to leave, so I suggest you leave."
Sirius squirmed, hoping to shake off the unwelcome arm around him, but it didn't move.
James caught the motion, because of course he did. He noticed almost everything, even in situations where Sirius wished he wouldn't; how Sirius had managed to keep it a secret that he fancied him, he had no idea.
"We were actually about to get a drink-"
"No, we weren't," Sirius interrupted.
"You heard him," James said. "Go."
"That's not-"
"Now," James said, voice firm and unyielding. Now was not the best time to get a thrill from that tone, but it happened to Sirius anyways.
The stranger-- who wanted very much to not be a stranger to Sirius-- straightened in annoyance. He finally took his arm off of Sirius, so that was a bright side. It was likely the only bright side, since it looked like the two of them were about to come to blows. "Look, I've been working on him all night, so go find someone else."
"Working on him?" James repeated, his voice a mix of anger and incredulity. "You need to leave. Right now."
The man went to grab Sirius again, and James didn't hesitate. He tossed both of their drinks into his face with a scowl.
Sirius blinked in surprise, watching the liquid drip down one very shocked looking face. Just as that same face started to contort in anger, Sirius stepped between them. "Like he said, go." He gave a little shove to accompany the words, and it finally got through the guy's skull that Sirius wasn't interested in him.
He mumbled a few unsavory things as he went, but all Sirius cared about was that he left.
They'd garnered a bit of attention, what with the throwing drinks in someone's face thing, so Sirius lowered his voice and said, "Thank you. I kept trying to get rid of him, but he wouldn't leave me alone."
James continued to scowl in the direction he'd left.
Sirius waited, then frowned a little. It wasn't like James to keep dwelling on a problem after it was solved. Sirius, yes. He could never let anything go, but James went with the flow. After a problem was solved, it was out of his head for the rest of his life unless it would make a good story. Rescuing Sirius from some arsehole that thought he was playing hard to get wasn't the sort of thing that made a good story.
He waited a little bit longer, but James was still upset.
This didn't make any sense. The guy walked away, and James should've rolled his eyes and either made a joke or asked if Sirius wanted to leave. The silence and the glaring were new.
"You all right there?" Sirius asked.
"Fine," James said, but it was wholly unbelievable because he was still glaring after a person that had (by now) long since retreated.
"Sure," Sirius said, drawing out the word so that James knew he didn't believe him.
James finally looked over at him. "What?"
"You look like you want to run after him and beat him into the ground. He was annoying and pushy, yeah, but not worth getting into a fight over." Sirius knew how much he was stretching the truth with that, considering how close he himself had come to saying sod it and punching him, but it was different when it was James.
"He wouldn't leave you alone."
"I know, I was there. It's not like you to be this upset over it, that's all. He got the message, he left, and he won't bother me again. We're done. It's time for you and I to start enjoying ourselves like we came here to, yeah?" Sirius said, grinning at him.
For a second, he thought it wouldn't work. He worried that James was going to hold some weird grudge about that guy for the rest of the night.
Then James looked at him and smiled like nothing had happened. "Yeah. You're right. I should er get us new drinks," he said, a hint of abashment coming through as he realized they didn't have drinks anymore, having thrown them rather happily into the face of the bloke that had been bothering Sirius.
"I'll go with you this time," Sirius said, "since clearly you can't be trusted to get them on your own."
James rolled his eyes, but it was with his usual fondness and the small smile that usually graced his face, making him always appear happy. "Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. Anyone would've done the same."
Sirius knew for a fact that neither Remus nor Peter would've stepped in like that. They would’ve stayed out of it and trusted, as they always did, that Sirius would want to handle it himself. In fact, if anyone had tried that, Sirius would've been pissed. James was the exception to that rule, the same way he was to all of Sirius's rules.
They turned to walk to the bar, and James put an arm around Sirius's shoulders, holding him close to his side. It wiped away the feeling of that other guy, and frankly, Sirius thought that his shoulders had been molded into this exact shape so that James's arm would fit there.
"Thanks," Sirius muttered, reaching up to five James's hand a squeeze.
"Of course," James said.
'Of course'. It was always 'of course' with him. Any time Sirius asked him for anything, he said 'of course', like it wasn't a question that had even needed to be asked.
Sirius’s heart warmed, and he tried not to put too much faith in it.
*
"-and he wouldn't leave Sirius alone even though he must've told him half a dozen times to sod off. Can you believe that?"
Lily tried not to sigh as she looked at the clothing rack. "Yes, I can believe it because you've told me this eight times." More like three times, but still. That was two more times than she needed to hear it. "Why is this bothering you so much? It's not like Sirius got hurt. The way you tell it, he forgot all about that berk by the time you left the club. Probably before that, even."
"It's not bothering me," James said, a blatant lie.
"Right, you always talk my ear off about things that don't bother you," she replied dryly. "Look, you don't have to tell me, but at least don't lie to yourself about it."
James was quiet for a minute.
He followed Lily as she decided to look at shoes instead of blouses.
It was only after she'd sat and started trying on a pair, that he spoke again. "I don't know why it's bothering me so much. It just feels like a big deal, you know?"
"I mean this in a supportive way, but no, I don't know what you mean. Talk it out, see if it makes more sense aloud than in your head." It always worked for her, at least.
"I didn't know it was weird until you said something. How am I supposed to talk about it now and have it make sense?"
"I dunno, give it a try. Brainstorm."
James looked at her for a moment. "If I'm ruining your shopping trip with this, you can say so."
"It would take a lot more than this to ruin the trip for me. This is more like gossip, which never ruins a trip. Besides, it's Sirius. You wouldn't be you if you didn't talk about Sirius at least once while we're hanging out." She stood and surveyed her reflection. Nice. Of course, when it came to James, he talked about Sirius a lot more than just the one time in a conversation. As she tested out walking, she continued, "You always talk about Sirius. Not sure if you noticed that."
"Everyone says that," James said with a sigh.
"Have you considered listening to everyone then?" she asked.
"What would listening mean? Yeah, I talk about Sirius. I am aware of that. He's my best mate, and we live together. Of course I talk about him."
"Right, but Marlene's my best mate and we live together, and I don't talk about her near as much."
"But you still talk about her."
"Yes, I do. Look," Lily said, trying on a different pair of shoes, "this isn't a question of 'do you talk about Sirius', it's a question of why do you talk so much about Sirius. You're close, I get that, but sometimes I wonder if there's any point in inviting you out but not him, because all you do is pine away when he's not around."
"I do not pine," James grumbled; he never grumbled when Sirius was around.
"Whatever you say. What do you think of these?" she asked, turning this way and that so he could see.
James looked and considered before answering, which she appreciated (he used to just say she looked good in everything which was terribly unhelpful). "They're a bit short for what you usually wear."
"Mm, you're right." She liked how they fit, but James had a point. If they didn't match her others, she'd never wear them, because all her outfits at home were made to match the style of shoe. Delightful though these were, she wouldn't wear them. She took them off, put on her own shoes, and said a quick, "I'll be back in a second," so she could find another pair, one more suited to her wardrobe. When she came back, James was still sat in the chair, a small frown on his face like he hadn't moved a centimeter in her absence. "You all right?" she asked.
"Do I really pine when he's not here?"
"I mean... yeah. It's not a bad thing, you just like to spend all your free time with him."
Instead of this comforting him, he groaned and covered his face with his hands. "I do pine. This is terrible."
"I think terrible might be an overreaction."
James did not look like he agreed when he took his hands away from his face and crossed them over his chest.
Lily tried on the new pair of shoes she'd grabbed and gave James another glance; he hadn't moved at all. "Okay, erm, I didn't mean to make you panic."
"I'm not panicking," he mumbled.
"Sure you're not. Look, I didn't mean anything by it." She checked the shoes in the mirror. A good fit, and in her usual style. This was a yes. She sat down and put them in the box and started packing up the others so she could put them back on the shelf. "You and Sirius are close, there's no harm in that, but I think you're going a little overboard by being this upset about something that didn't hurt him. And he doesn't care about," she added, because if Sirius cared, then it would make sense for James to care equally. But this was nothing. Sirius was fine, he didn't care, he probably didn't remember it, and here James was two days later, still stewing over it like it was an offense to nature.
James looked up at the ceiling, leant back so far in the chair it looked like he was going to slide right out of it and land in a puddle on the floor. "Yeah," he said, but Lily got the feeling that wasn't a response to her so much as it was to something in his head.
"Do I get to know what's going on in that mind of yours?" she asked as she stacked up the shoe boxes she’d rejected.
"Do you want to?" James asked, which was a fair point.
"If it'll help you, I'm here."
He hummed, considering that. "It's fine." He pushed himself up to a more normal sitting position. "Oh, are you done already?"
"Yeah."
"Here, I can hold those," he offered.
Lily passed them over and thanked him, but in the back of her mind, she wondered if their conversation had had a bigger impact on James than he let on.
*
"I'm in love with Sirius," James said. He was the only one in the room. He’d wanted to hear how it sounded when he said it aloud instead of thinking it.
It sounded more official out loud. Like it was real. He'd already known it was real, of course; he'd had that realisation while shopping with Lily. He nearly told her, but it didn't feel right for her to know something about James before Sirius did.
He sighed, turning to the side so he could lay down on the couch. Sirius would be getting home soon, and James should tell him. It was the right thing to do, but he wished he knew how he was going to react. Most of the time, he knew how Sirius would react-- they knew each other well enough. For this, he knew what he wanted to hear, but there was no telling how Sirius would actually react.
Obviously, it would be wonderful if, when James said, "I love you," Sirius said it back. That was the dream, but he wasn't sure if that was realistic to hope for. Wouldn't there have been some sort of sign if Sirius felt that way about him? James's possessiveness was a pretty good sign of his own feelings, but Sirius didn't treat him like that. James didn't think there were signs out there that he'd missed; he thought they weren't there at all. He could choose to read into a few actions, but Sirius had been doing those for years. It wasn't a sign, but Merlin, how James wanted it to be.
He sighed again. He was like a sighing machine ever since having this realization about Sirius. He felt a little melancholy now, and he'd have it for a few more days after Sirius turned him down before he finally went back to normal.
James wasn't meant for this. Useless pining didn't suit him, and he knew it.
Although, maybe it suited him more than he'd like to admit, because the one bloke he'd tried to date had been... well, a lot like Sirius. James hadn't realized it at the time, but he had been. Not so much physically, but the leather and the devilish smirk should've been a dead giveaway. James had thought that he had a type that Sirius also so happened to fall into when he'd thought about it, but the thing that had drawn James to him initially was his laugh. Now that he knew he'd latched onto the person that was closest to Sirius that he could have, he felt a little queasy. How had he not realized it sooner?
He was still beating himself up about it when Sirius got home.
Sirius took one look at him and said, "Okay, so did something terrible happen while you were shopping? Because you've been off ever since you and Lily went out."
"No, I'm fine," James said, heaving himself back into a sitting position. "I had an epiphany is all."
"Please tell me you and Lily aren't getting back together," Sirius said, wrinkling his nose.
James snorted. That relationship had been awkward for both James and Lily, and all of their friends hadn't liked the way they constantly sniped at each other over rubbish that didn't matter and no one cared about. "Definitely not getting back together with Lils. I'm dumb, but I'm not that dumb."
"You're not dumb," Sirius said.
James gave a weak smile, and Sirius stepped closer.
"You sure you're all right?"
"You and me, we're- we're close, right?"
Sirius looked more concerned as he sat next to him on the couch. "Yeah."
"So erm, this doesn't have to change anything if you don't want it to, but I was thinking that maybe we could go on a date. Sometime. If you want."
"I- sorry, quick question. Is asking me on a date what had you so worried the past couple days?"
"It's only been the one day," James hedged. "But yes."
"Why would that make you miserable?"
"It didn't make me miserable," James said immediately. "I was doing a lot of thinking. I didn't know that I fancied you until then, so it was a shock for me to find out."
"You learned you fancy me yesterday and almost immediately asked me out?"
"Erm. Yes?"
Sirius smiled slowly at him. "Wow. I'm beginning to feel like the world's biggest coward, in that case. I'd love to go on a date with you, by the way."
“Great,” James said, trying not to smile too wide, but it was a losing battle and they both knew it.
CAUTION: Protective Big Brother || R.L
MASTERLIST Summary: Remus Lupin fell in love with the one girl he shouldn’t. Y/N Potter. James’ little sister (by a year).
Warning: sexual innuendos, over protective brother, kissing, slightly implied bisexual Remus (blink and you’ll miss it)
A/N: I reposted this from my old account because it got a lot of likes.
Two months, 3 weeks and 2 days. That is how long I have dating my brother’s best friend. We’d been trying to keep our relationship a secret yet that is rather difficult when we have to share dorms.
It all started in January after a full moon. I was tending to Remus’ scars on his chest whilst the boys were off doing God-knows-what, he ‘accidentally’ confessed his feelings in his cute sleepy daze. The night after, we had a study date that turned into a proper date after we started kissing. We decided to keep our new found relationship a secret from James, meaning we can’t tell anyone.
However, we were caught on numerous occasions. Remus and I were studying in his dorm when we became distracted by each other’s lips. But Lily, Mary and Peter decided to walk in on the exact moment I straddled my boyfriend. They all promised not to tell my brother. The one instant I thought our relationship was definitely over was when Sirius walked into the broom closet Remus and I were making out in. The moment we really thought the relationship was over when James walked into my dorm, unannounced, to find me underneath a shirtless Remus.
“Shit! James,” Remus cussed as he stood up and grabbed his shirt that was thrown, by me, beside the bed.
“James!” I screeched, “what the hell are you doing in my room?!”
“I wanted to know what you got mum for her birthday!” James cried, “what in Merlin’s name are you doing with my sister, Moony?!”
“Would you believe me if I said we were studying,” I asked, making a shrugging gesture.
“Studying what?! Human anatomy?!” He screamed as he stomped over to his brunette friend. The commotion must have been loud enough to hear through the open door because Lily and Sirius ran into the room with matching confused faces.
“What in the world is going on ‘ere,” Lily asked. She must have put the pieces together and realised what happened when her boyfriend quickly pulled out his want to point it at Remus.
“Hey, hey, hey! Prongs, let me explain before you fucking kill me!” Remus responded to his movement in a more annoyed voice than a scared one, hands up in surrender.
“Yeah!” Sirius added, “put y’bloody wand away.”
“He’s shagging my sister!” James argued. He sounded upset. “There’s three people that I warned you all not to date. Lily, Snivelous and MY LITTLE SISTER!”
“In our defence we haven’t.. done that,” I cringed at my words, “anyways, I’m seventeen! I can make my own decisions.”
“I trusted Remus would never go against what I said. I thought if anyone would go behind my back to kiss you, it would be Sirius.”
“Wow! Thanks man,” Sirius rolled his eyes.
“Look James. I’m sorry for lying to you but I really like her. It’s not just a stupid hook up,” Remus sighed.
James looked at him skeptically before slipping his wand into his trousers’ pockets. “Okay,” he nodded.
“Okay?” The lycanthrope furrowed his eyebrows.
“I’m not angry about you two anymore. I know you don’t need my permission, but you have it,” James sighed.
“I am sorry Jamie,” I grimaced.
“BUT! No kanoodling or yucky stuff. No snogging or lovey dovey stuff in front of me,” he made dramatic hand gestures as he spoke. “Oh and if you hurt her, Remus, I will slit you throat.” He said causally as he walked off through the door.
“You two are really cute together,” Lily smiled sweetly as Sirius and her walked out the room. Sirius was obviously still offended by James comment from earlier.
“So that went well,” I spoke after a moment of silence.
“Yes it did,” Remus replied as he wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me into a kiss.
Beautiful Ghosts
Ghost!Reader X Draco
Summary: Request: @sydthekid1518: I had an Idea for a draco fic, where y/n is a ghost that’s fairly popular with the students and staff, and draco falls for her and stuff? And then maybe y/n and Harry create a plan that would allow reader to come back to life and stuff and be with draco.
A/N: Happy spooky season to all and to all a good night filled with Draco Malfoy. I’m so excited about how this turned out and that I got it done before Halloween because the odds weren’t looking to hot not gonna lie, but here it is and it’s beautiful. As always, let me know what y’all think,,,
“Y/n, please don’t disturb my students,” Snape droned with a monotone voice.
“You’ve got no power over me, Severus,” I laughed, ghosting away from his Slytherins working on Polyjuice potion.
“But I do have control in this classroom, dead or not Miss Y/n, this is my domain,” Snape argued, ruffled.
“I’m eternally bonded to this school. It’s my domain more than it is yours,” I countered, perched on his desk.
“Blasted ghosts,” A boy muttered, catching my attention, “No respect for authority,”
Tilting my head, I made my way over to him, studying the young Slytherin. He was about the age that I was when I had died, moved on, crossed the veil—whatever. His steady grey eyes and twisted sneer told me all that I needed to know about him.
“Another Malfoy,” I mused. “Interesting... And where’s your respect for the dead Mr. Malfoy?”
His eyes went wide at the idea that I was addressing him at all. Like I spooked him. Imagine that, a ghost spooking someone.
“Enough Ms. Y/n. Kindly refrain from scaring my students if you must stay,” Snape intervened. “I’m not scared,” Malfoy shot back.
“Boo!” I teased before passing through the walls of the dungeon and into my favorite spot in the entire castle, even living: the library.
I never had so much time on my hands before being dead, and now I could just take a book and read. Pince had been able to enchant them in such a way that I was able to hold them and turn their pages still. I was in the middle of a riveting tale about a boy who never grew up and had his destiny forced upon him and could fly. Perched on one of the tops of the shelves, I was lost in another world of magic.
“I didn’t know you could read,” I heard the same condescending voice from Severus’ potions class earlier that day.
“Little Malfoy,” I smiled down at him, closing my book. “And why would you assume that? I don’t look that stupid, do I?”
“Well, no,” He fumbled. “But you’re a ghost, you’re dead,”
“Yes, and I like to read, anything else?” I raised an eyebrow at him.
“Don’t call me little Malfoy. My name’s Draco,” He huffed.
“But it annoys you,” I mocked a pout. “And you are a little Malfoy, a bit taller than your father, but young all the same,”
“Who are you calling young? We’re the same age,” His voice raised enough that Pince had to shush him.
“I was born in 1776, I think you’re a little young,”
“1776!?” Draco’s eyes bulged. “But... how? You’re...” Pince hushed him again. I floated down and perched on the desk, trying and failing to contain my laughter.
“Oh, so now you care little Malfoy?” I teased lightly. “What happened to your dismissal of spirits not hours ago?” He didn’t have an answer for that. He just stared and didn’t dare to meet my eyes. “If you really want to know, I’ll tell you some time, but you’re going to be late for McGonagall if you don’t get going,”
Flustered, Draco headed out of the library and I watched him go. Knowing that Remus had a class this hour with the infamous Harry Potter, I headed over and perched on a desk in the back.
“Miss Y/n,” Remus acknowledged, “Perhaps you’d like to aid us today as we learn about ghosts and spirits?” Even though he had grown quite a bit over the years, there was still the same shine in his eyes when he was able to teach—even if it wasn’t a rag-tag group of marauders.
“So... you’re a ghost?” A young Hermione asked, a girl who spent a lot of hours in my library.
“Yes,” I smiled at her. “There are different types of ghosts however,”
“Oh, yes, Poltergeists, Funnels, Whisps, Orbs, and Shades,” She said matter-of-factly.
“Exactly, and Hogwarts has them all,” I looked to Remus who nodded for me to continue. “Most of you know that Peeves is a Poltergeist, a trickster loud ghost. Sometimes they were loud and violent, sometimes... well sometimes you have something like Peeves.” The class laughed.
“I’m sure you all have heard of the Grey Lady?” Remus interjected. “Helena Ravenclaw was murdered by the Bloody Baron and spends the rest of her days here at Hogwarts, they are both what we classify as Funnel ghosts. Ghosts who visit loved ones or loved places,”
“What about Whisps?” An intrigued Weasley asked.
“Well, most others are Whisps,” I explained. “Nearly Headless Nick, the Fat Friar, and most others you see strolling about. There is no strict reason that they’re here, other than they chose not to move on, or felt their work on earth was not completed.”
“Orbs are normally the spirits of animals or humans travelling about,” I continued, “They mainly show up in photographs. It wasn’t till after I died that cameras were invented, and they were found,”
“Any what kind of ghost are you?” A shy kid in the back asked. The class of kids turned to me, all expectant.
“I’m a Shade,” I explained. “It means that when I died, I wasn’t meant to. My soul knowing that, remained, and here I am,”
“Shades are very rare in the Wizarding World,” Remus cut in, “Not many are killed before their time, and many of them are very young,”
“Aren’t Shades allowed to come back though?” Hermione asked. “Because they were wrongfully killed? Doesn’t fate allow them another chance?”
Remus and I shared a look. I remembered when he had asked me that same question when he was no more than a third year as well. There was a solemn sorrow in his eyes.
“Yes,” I answered hesitantly. “There is a possibility, but the odds are almost impossible. Most of them have to do around prophecies.”
Class had ended, and Hermione waved as she went to leave. I lingered behind a bit with Remus for old times’ sake. He was one who had always been kind to me. I was one who never judged him for being a werewolf before he found his marauders.
“Sirius escaped from Azkaban,” He whispered softly, his gaze fixed on the papers on his desk. “I... I thought I was over it. Over him. He had my best friends killed,”
Pity flooded my chest as I hovered over to him, my hand ghosting above his.
“That wasn’t your fault Remus...” Was I going to give away the truth that I knew? Or would I keep it a secret? “And it wasn’t Sirius’ either,”
“How can you say that!” Remus slammed his hand on the desk. “He gave away Lily and James’ location! Then he killed Peter!”
“Remus,” I shook my head. “I can’t tell you everything, because it’s not in the stars, but... your friend isn’t who you think he is,”
A quiet moment passed between us and rather than get upset at me like I had thought he would, he spoke softly and surely.
“You’re... you’re saying there’s hope?”
“There’s always hope,” I offered a soft smile. “For all of us... even me,”
“How are you doing with that? The prophecy?” He asked.
I sighed and shook my head. “I might really be stuck like this for the rest of... forever...”
“Is there anything...?”
“No,” I denied softly. “Interfering with a prophecy can ruin it,”
“Can,” Remus stressed. “Not that it will,”
“But is it worth that risk?” I countered. “I could lose my one shot to come back. To be human again,”
“If I could be human again, I’d take any chance I could,” Remus’ eyes held a sadness that very few could sympathize with. One of those was me.
“Perhaps you’re right,” I murmured and let him be, drifting around the halls for a bit then back to the library to think some more and maybe find the right answer.
What I didn’t expect to find however was Draco, fast asleep where we had spoken earlier, draped over a few books and handwritten notes. I hadn’t noticed the late hour, sometimes time did elude me, and the days seemed to run together.
I didn’t want to wake the young Malfoy, instead, I peered at the books underneath him. Potions books, it seemed. Supposing that a Slytherin might have a partiality to Snape’s class, there was no need to question why he’d rather work on this subject than the others. Knowing Pince would chase Draco out of the library if he didn’t wake, my notion to not disturb him fell to the wayside.
“Malfoy!” I whispered loudly. “Draco, wake up!”
It was useless to try and shake him awake, I wasn’t able to. I could however pull the book out from under his resting head. So, I did.
“Bloody hell,” Draco grumbled, rubbing his eyes. “What’d you do that for?”
“You fell asleep?”
“And that was the only way you know how to wake a person?” He snapped, blinking into consciousness.
I gave him a flat look and reached out to touch him. He shied away, but it was in vain because my hand passed right through his material body.
“Oh,” He muttered. “But you can touch the books?”
“Pince and I worked on that together,” I informed him. “Did you think I would spend eternity and not figure out how to read?”
“I... uh,” He stammered, blushing a bit. “How come I’ve never met a ghost like you before?”
“And that means?” I pressed, perching on the desk.
“Well, all of the other ghosts are... I don’t know... stuck in their ways? Not sad about being ghosts? Haven’t kept up on things like reading?”
“You think I’m sad about being a ghost?” I mused.
“I... you—I mean,” He stammered, looking down in embarrassment. “You just seem... optimistically hopeless,” It was almost mumbled through his exhaustion.
“You know those words have opposite meaning, right?” I teased softly. “And... I’m a Shade. I doubt you’ve met another before like me,”
“A Shade?”
“Do you not pay attention in Remus’ class?” I raised an eyebrow at him.
“I don’t have his class until tomorrow,” Draco dismayed. “And it’s a stupid class anyway,”
“Defense against the dark arts isn’t stupid,” I refuted. “Especially with Remus teaching it,”
“You knew him then... when he went here. Professor Lupin,” Draco noted.
“Yes,” Lost in thought, a quietness passed before I spoke again. “When you learn what a Shade is, you’ll understand,”
“You could just tell me,” Draco whined, listlessly tired.
“But then you won’t pay attention in class,” I smiled. “Go on to bed, Draco. I’m not going anywhere,”
____________________________
Draco sulked in bed that night, thinking about you. Thinking about what a Shade was. Of course, he didn’t wait for class in the morning, instead he took out his DADA book and began to read up on ghosts. And he read. And read. And read. And barely found anything about what a Shade was. All that he knew was that you died when before your time. Maybe that was why he saw the sadness in your eyes.
He had every intention to be at Lupin’s class that day, but having Mythical Creatures beforehand, things hadn’t gone as planned.
“There’s always one,” Your voice sounded amused. “Why am I not surprised it was you, Little Malfoy?”
“It was the bloody hippogriff,” Draco snapped back.
“And somehow I don’t think that’s the entire truth,” You mused, hovering at his bedside. Until Pomfrey gave him the clear to leave, he was stuck with you.
“Won’t you just leave me alone?” He groaned, closing his eyes and laying back on the lumpy pillows of the hospital cot.
“Did you not want to learn about Shades? You’re going to miss Remus’ class after all,” The smile he heard in your voice made him look over to you, skeptical.
Your offer was tempting. Very tempting. He didn’t care much about magic other than excelling at it, therefore things that didn’t pertain to his advancement—mythical creatures and the like— held no inkling to him. And yet, you were a mystery he didn’t mind learning about. He wanted to know more about you. And you specifically.
“I guess, since I’m stuck here,” He tried to play it off as nonchalance, but you raised an eyebrow at him, seeing right through his charade.
“Well, Little Malfoy,” You hovered and perched on the end of his bed. “What do you know?”
“I... uh. Shades are people who have died before their time,” He stammered, not sure why he was so nervous.
“Quite,” You nodded. “Anything else?”
“Our book didn’t have anything else,” He admitted.
You went pensive a moment then nodded. “I suppose that you’d learn more about me in Divination than the Dark Arts,”
“Divination? You’ve got to be bloody joking! That class is a circus!” Draco exclaimed, wincing when he moved his arm too much.
“Perhaps,” You didn’t berate him, but seemed to be lost in thought once more. “But all Shades are tied to prophecies.”
“All of them?” Draco pressed.
“The fates understand that these souls left before their time, and give them another chance, a prophecy... to come back and live one more time.”
“So, you have the chance to live again?” His genuine curiosity seemed to shock both of you. “How?”
“If the prophecy is fulfilled, then I get to live again,” You said it as if it were obvious.
“So, why haven’t you, I don’t know... fulfilled it?” Draco asked.
You laughed something sad and soft. “Don’t you think I’ve tried? I’ve read every prophecy, every book, every scribble. I’ve tried everything... after so many centuries, you give up hope and accept your fate,”
“But this wasn’t your fate,” He argued back. “You were meant to live, back then, whatever that life was,”
“Do you know what happened when I was young, before I died, Little Malfoy?” You spoke, and he could hear the age in your voice though you liked no older than he was. It was your sorrow that aged you. He waited for you to continue. “I was born in 1776, the year the Americans went to war with the King of England. At the time we were living in the French countryside with my aunt because my father had gone to fight in the war. He was a general,” A smile ghosted your lips. “My father died in the war... the battle of Yorktown... that’s what it’s called today. Back then it was just a letter and inheritance money that went to my brother,”
“Hang on, you’re saying that your father fought in the American War of Independence? Under the king?”
“So, he can be taught,” You smiled at him. “Yes, the king at the time was a wizard and until parliament and the ministry were born and declared that muggles and wizards should rule themselves. Of course, the ministry was formed in the beginning of that century, but it took the war for them to call the final straw.”
“So, your father died in the war, that doesn’t explain what happened to you,” Draco pointed out, deeply invested.
“Well, tell me, what happened in France after that war ended?”
“The French Revolution,”
Your warm smile had the same effect as the sun. “Yes, and as I said, I was in France at the time, being tutored at home for the summer. Muggle girls weren’t allowed to go to school back then... I travelled to Hogwarts to receive schooling and even then, I was only allowed to learn Herbology and Potions. At least those two classes stayed the same,” You sounded sad and wistful. “But the revolutionists were going for the rich, any sort of rich. And at the time, they saw knowledge as wealth and power, and I had a reputation for being able to read and attending a private school out of the country and well...”
“They killed you because you knew how to read?” Draco distressed, sitting up, enraptured by your tale. “That’s so... stupid,”
“It was. But perhaps it was my own fault, I wouldn’t deny that I could read. I was proud.” Your smile faded again as melancholy settled on your face. “Now it seems that’s all I do. Fate is funny like that...”
“You’re free to go Mr. Malfoy,” Madam Pomfrey’s voice seemed to draw you both from whatever world had been created with your words.
He had to blink a few times to come to grips with the fact that he was currently in the hospital wing at Hogwarts, and not centuries behind, trying to imagine death for the reason of knowledge. There was an awkward moment between the two of you as you both seemed to realize that you were no longer int eh late eighteenth century. You offered a smile and left without another word, a curious look on your face as you left.
That was the last time he saw you that day, and that week for that matter, but he always wondered what you were doing. What were you reading today? What was your prophecy? Was it really as hopeless as you said it was? Was there a reason that he found himself caring?
“Oh, hello Harry,” I stood from the corner of Remus’ office, intrigued that the young Potter had come. He looked so much like his father that my heart ached for Remus and to imagine what he felt when he saw Harry.
“Y/n,” Harry seemed surprised. “I... uh... you know Professor Lupin?”
“Well I was here when he went to Hogwarts himself, so yes, I’m quite fond of him if you can believe it,” I smiled as Remus eyed the situation.
“Is there something that you needed Harry?” Remus asked, trying to sound professional, but I could hear the sentiment in his voice.
“The map...” Harry turned slightly pink.
A smile grew on my face. “You have the Marauder’s Map?” I almost laughed. “How in the world did you get that? Oh, if your father knew,” I did laugh this time.
Remus shot me a sharp look and Harry looked at me in wonder.
“My father? You knew my father?” The realization seemed to dawn him.
“Yes, well,” Remus interjected sharply. “Don’t get caught again Potter,”
“Why haven’t you told him?” I demanded as soon as Harry left. “Remus, come on, that’s not fair to Harry,”
“I’m not the one to tell him though! I can’t be!” He protested and I could hear the anxiety in his voice.
“Remus, I’ve known you a long time. And I’ve known James and Lily. They would want you to talk to him. They would want you apart of his life,” I argued, or perhaps encouraged softly.
“Maybe you’re right,” Remus mumbled.
“Of course, I am,” I smiled. “It’ll work out Re, with Sirius, and with Harry,”
“I hope you’re right,”
I left him to his thoughts and on my way to the library, I was ambushed by the younger Potter. Not that I wasn’t expecting it, I knew that Harry would have questions for me as soon as he knew I knew his father.
“Hello Harry,” I smiled.
“You know about my dad,” He burst out, hope in his eyes and tone.
“And your mother,” I smiled and perched on the windowsill nearby.
“Can you tell me about them? Please?” His eyes went glossy with tears that he blinked away.
“Your mother was bold, but still kind and gentle. She looked out for the little guy. She rooted for the underdog and protected the younger years of any House. She was always kind to me. Her and Remus both.” The memory was fond, if it was a memory. Did ghosts have memories after they were dead?
“And my dad?” He clung to every word.
“He... was a bit like you. Always finding trouble whether it was his fault or not. Totally deserved to be smacked a few times... but the war changed him. He grew up rather quickly. Into a protective caring young man. Almost everyone had eyes for him, but he only saw your mother,”
“Do... you think they would be proud of me?” His gaze dropped to his beat-up sneakers.
“Harry,” I called his attention. “You’re their son, they’ll always be proud of you,”
“But—”
“No buts,” I interjected. “That’s all it takes for you to make them proud, I promise,”
He nodded and mumbled a thanks before taking off toward the Gryffindor dorm. Finding solace in the library, I began to read again. Maybe a week had passed. Perhaps two. I wasn’t sure. I was so wrapped up in my books that I became lost to time. Until a blond-haired boy came in, his nose stuck in a book.
“I was wondering when I’d see you again Little Malfoy,” I smiled, from my perch in the library. He didn’t acknowledge me, causing me to frown. “Draco?” I ghosted down and perched on the table next to him. “Are you ghosting a ghost?”
Though he ignored me I could see the smile that twitched at his lips. That gave me little hope. “Is everything alright?” I asked, genuine concern coloring my voice.
“Ask Potter,” Draco snapped. “You seem to fancy him lately,”
“Excuse me?” I was taken aback. “Harry? He just wanted to know about his parents, that’s all,”
Draco frowned at this and he finally looked at me. “His parents?”
“Yes,” I rolled my eyes. “It’s not like he has a lot of people who know his parents and are willing to tell him anything. Dumbledore has made almost everyone vow not to talk to him, but what good is a vow to someone who’s already in the grave?” I shrugged. “Poor kid knows nothing,”
“I...” Draco didn’t seem to have the words. Instead he looked back down at his book. I smiled and rolled my eyes at his antics.
“If you care that much, you are still my favorite Little Malfoy,” His cheeks tinged pink and I laughed. “You’re something else Malfoy, you know that?”
“Says the girl who died for admitting that she could read instead of lying,” He raised an eyebrow at me. I chuckled and shrugged.
“Says the boy who avoided me for what, two weeks, because I talked to a boy about his dead parents,” I mused.
“It wasn’t two weeks,” Draco grumbled. “Nine days,”
“Oh, forgive me,” I laughed. “Nine days.”
He smiled and looked back down at his notes. I think it was the first time I had ever seen him smile and not sneer.
“So, nine days,” He prompted. “I assume you haven’t left the library... read anything interesting?”
I laughed and somehow the hours passed as Draco and I spoke about books and stories we had read as kids, and the ones we were currently invested in. It shocked me to know that he was an avid reader, of fantasy novels, nonetheless. Though I had read just about everyone that he had mentioned, there were a few that I added to my mental list of his that I said I would check out. He seemed sincerely happy at my interest of the books he read.
“Father thought they were childish,” He muttered when I asked him about it. “Fairytales and fantasies,”
“That’s stupid,” I scoffed, and Draco gaped at me, aghast that I would dare to call something his father said ‘stupid.’ It made me pause. “You... you know you don’t have to always agree with your parents,”
His gaze cast downward. “I don’t want to disappoint them,”
My face furrowed. “You’re they’re son, that’s enough for them to be proud,”
“You don’t know my parents,” He scoffed, leaning back in his chair. “I think the last time they were proud of me, is when I was sorted into Slytherin.”
“I’m sure that’s not true,” I protested.
“You don’t know my parents,” Draco argued again.
“I do,” I retorted. “Or I did,”
The notion seemed to dawn on Draco as he stared up at me with wonder in his eyes.
“You did,” He realized. “Can you tell me about them... have they always been so...”
“Strict?” I offered.
“Suffocating,” Draco supplied.
I pressed my lips together and thought a moment.
“Your father, perhaps. I never spoke to him much, and he never paid me mind. But you mother,” I smiled at the memories that came flooding back. “She was bold, cunning. She loved her sisters with a fierce passion.” My smile. “The three of them were some of the brightest witches I’d ever seen,” I glanced over to him. “You have her eyes, her same spirit,”
A smile drew on his lips as his face turned a soft shade of pink. “Do you know that because you’re a ghost?” He mused.
“No, I’m just a girl who can read character pretty well. After seeing so many faces pass through here, and reading so many stories, there are those who stand out and stay with you. Your mother... she stood out to me. And I can see her in your eyes,” My demeanor softened as I realized the words I was saying and if I could have, I would have blushed.
“Thank you,” He whispered as the clock chimed a late hour.
“You should head back,” I sighed softly. “Get some rest,”
“Why don’t I ever see you near the Slytherin dorm?” Draco asked, gathering his things.
“I’d rather not cross paths with the Baron,” I admitted.
“The Baron? Why?” Draco frowned; his bag slung over his shoulder.
“Never you mind,” I smiled. “Get to bed Little Malfoy,”
“Don’t call me that,” He grumbled, trudging out of the library.
The night progressed as did the month and I went from one book to another, soon searching for a book I hadn’t in a long time. My diary from when I was alive. Published as its own book that I had found a few decades ago. Tucked into the pages was what held my fate. My prophecy.
I went to the shelf in which I knew my book had its home, but it wasn’t there. Instead a sliver of time carved away by my missing book. Drifting over to Pince I asked her about where my book had gone. She told me that Malfoy had checked it out and had it for about a week—since the day we spent in the infirmary together.
For the first time in a long time I felt... embarrassed that my story and thoughts were on display for anyone to read. I never cared before, but this felt different.
Cursing the late hour, I knew that there was no way to get to Draco now. The Bloody Baron was protective about other ghosts coming into the Slytherin dorms. I’d have to find him in the morning then. I considered loitering outside the Slytherin portrait, but I also did not want to go anywhere near the Bloody Baron. I had heard and read enough.
So instead I headed to the Astronomy Tower to watch the stars again, having silent conversations with them, wondering if they’d ever grant me life again.
“You’re glowing,”
The voice startled me enough that I actually jumped. The irony of scaring a ghost. I turned to see Draco behind me, his eyes glued to my shimmering skin.
“Yes, all ghosts do it under the moon and stars,” I noted. “By the way, can I have my book back?” I stood, going over to him.
“Your book?” He questioned.
“My book,” I restressed. “My diary? That you have from the library? The one that has my—” I stopped myself.
“Your prophecy.” Draco finished, offering me the book that he had drawn from his robes. “Yeah, I know.”
I stared at him curiously, pulling the book back into the security of my arms, where it belonged. That uncertain feeling returned to my chest.
“You know it’s rude to read a girl’s diary,” I retorted, defensive.
“It’s a published book in the library, anyone can read it,” Draco rolled his eyes. I gave him a flat look and he shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “So, have you figured out what it means?”
I sighed softly and shook my head in defeat. “The only thing I’m sure of is the great star is Sirius,”
“Sirius, like Sirius Black? Escaped Azkaban criminal?” Draco exasperated.
“Well, the star is his name sake. But I’m sure you of all people know that Draco,” I raised an eyebrow at him. “Your family has a knack for celestial namesakes. If I remember correctly, Sirius is your mother’s cousin,”
“What?” Draco demanded. “No! There is no way!”
“Draco,” I reached out for him in vain as he paced in anger and confusion. “Draco will you calm down?” I nearly shouted.
“Calm down!? How can I when I know that I’m related to that criminal!?” He demanded.
“Sirius isn’t a criminal!” I argued back. “He didn’t kill Peter or those people!” I gasped, covering my mouth in shame, my eyes wide. That was a secret that I wasn’t supposed to tell.
“What do you mean he didn’t kill those people?” Draco sneered, stalking up to me.
“I—I’m not supposed to...” I took a step back, ghostly tears welling in my eyes. “I wasn’t supposed to... Merlin,” I cried, sliding to the ground.
Draco’s demeanor changed from anger to worried and concerned. Not that I noticed through my distress. I felt as if I had just betrayed one of my best friends.
“Y/n, what... what in the world are you talking about?” Draco asked sitting beside me, a failed attempt to reach out and comfort me.
“I promised. I promised I wouldn’t tell what I knew until the time was right,” I sobbed. “Bloody hell, he’ll never trust me again,” I squeaked.
“Who?” Draco demanded.
I looked at him, wide eyed with fear, shaking my head softly. “I... I can’t. I’m sorry Draco,”
I dematerialized and rematerialized in a quiet portion of the castle grounds, away from the rest of the students, among the woods. The trees welcomed me and the further I walked in, the less tied to the castle I felt. I came to a lake and sat beside it. Crying tears that would never fall in my undead state, I stared at the water and my lack of reflection.
“I’m so sorry Sirius,” I wept softly. “I didn’t mean to tell him... I was just defending you,”
“I’m surprised you kept the secret this long,”
Again, I jumped, startled by the voice behind me.
“Hey there Spooks,” Sirius gave a lopsided smile, the years in Azkaban resting in his eyes and in the lines on his face.
“Sirius,” I gasped. “What are you doing? It’s not safe here!” I protested.
“I couldn’t leave my girl to cry, now could I?” He smirked, before his expression sobered.
“You should,” I sniffed. “I’m so sorry Sirius, it slipped out,”
“I know,” He held his hands up in a calming effort. “I knew it would, and it’s okay. Who did you tell? It wasn’t Moony was it?”
“No,” I looked down. “But you need to tell him Sirius, he deserves to know,”
“He won’t even talk to me. He thinks that I betrayed James and Lily and killed all of his friends,” Sirius toed at the dirt—the same tick he had in his Hogwarts years when he had been caught in a lie or prank.
“But you didn’t,” I protested. “He still loves you Sirius, I can see it in his eyes and when he talks about you and James...”
“He—no,” Sirius shook his head. “That’s not for you to worry about,”
“Do not make me mother you,” I threatened. “Talk to Remus,”
“I will,” Sirius sighed. “When the time is right,”
“As a girl who’s waited for centuries for the right time... talk to him as soon as you can,” There was a pity-filled look on his face that I brushed off.
“Any luck with that? Your prophecy?” He seemed almost hopeful.
“No,” I sighed. “But there is one who took the time to ask this year. Like Remus did his first year,” The memory was a soft spot for both of us.
“You were his first friend,” Sirius smiled at the same memory. “So, who is it this year?”
“Little Malfoy,”
Sirius snorted. “We both know you don’t have a sense of humor, drop the act,”
“I’m ser—” He gave me a look and I paused to rephrase. “I’m telling the truth. It was Draco who asked, who read my diary, and knows about the prophecy,” I hesitated. “He’s also the one I told,” My gaze dropped to the ground waiting for the backlash.
“Malfoy!?” Sirius demanded. “You told Malfoy!?”
“I’m sorry! I told you I was sorry!” I shouted back, bristling, feeling my body shudder. Sirius seemed to notice and took a few paces away and composed himself.
I dared to speak. “All he knows is that you didn’t kill Peter. That’s all. I’m so sorry Sirius,” I turned, and he was gone. “Fine! Leave!” I shouted. “Like always... like everyone...”
I let out a scream of frustration that was carried away with the wind. Letting out a sigh of defeat I wandered up to the castle again.
“Y/n?” For the third time tonight, I jumped at the call of my name. It was Draco again.
“Draco, look,” I started. “I...”
“No,” He stopped me softly. “I’m sorry... I...” He shook his head and took off down the hall towards the Slytherin dorms. Chasing after him, he was too far gone, and I was face to face with the Baron.
“Oh, could this night get any worse?” I shouted to no one in particular. “I don’t mean to trespass, apologies.”
“Stay out of my territory and away from my students, you little harlot,” The Baron sneered.
“Gladly,” I growled back. “Arse,” I muttered as I ghosted back to the upper levels of the castle.
Utterly lost on what to do, I found myself by the Black Lake, staring up at the moon and stars. I stayed there until the sun rose over the dark waters, painting the valleys in a golden light. I remained there, watching the sun and moon dance in the sky in an unchangeable waltz that continued for eternity.
“They said you were out here,”
I didn’t jump this time at the sound of his voice as the moon rose to her duet again.
“Hello, Draco,” I murmured softly. “Come to watch the stars with me?”
“Sure,” I could hear the smile in his voice as he sat beside me on the bank of the lake, the only sound was the music of the night, the lake lapping at the small beach, and his gentle breaths.
“I... I’m really sorry,” He murmured softly. “For that night, I didn’t mean to get so angry. I wasn’t upset with you...” Silence fell softly between us. “My parents never told me... I wrote to my mother...” My eyes widened as I gazed over at him, his pale skin almost having the same affect that mine did in the moon light. “I never knew...”
“I’m sorry,” I offered.
“Merlin don’t apologize to me,” He laughed hopelessly.
“Well I did sort of freak out on you, so... sorry.”
He shrugged and his gaze fixed on the moonlit water. “My father thinks it’s absurd that I’m talking to you... and I think my mother is slightly worried about me for it,”
“Any particular reason?” I mused.
“Father has always been against those different than him in any way... my mother probably worries that I’m not making friends...talking to ghosts...” A smile toyed at his lips at the mention of his mother.
“Are we not friends then?” I teased lightly, causing him to laugh.
“Sure,” He rolled his eyes at me, this time causing me to laugh. “Do you miss them?” He asked after a quiet moment.
“Who?”
“Your parents... your family?” He seemed almost afraid to ask.
I pondered the question. “Yes, sometimes... but I’ve spent a lot of years wasting tears that will never fall over people I can never see again... you move on and learn to live after a while... well as much as a ghost can live,”
“You can’t cry, can you?” He came to the fact easier and saner than most did.
I shook my head. “I can feel bitter sorrow, the worst loss, but I can never shed a tear,” I chuckled humorlessly. “The irony, I have the most to mourn and I can’t even cry,”
“I’m sorry,”
I shrugged. “I’ve lived a long time without being able to cry... just reminds me that I’ll never be quite human again,”
“But you could be,” He had more hope than I ever had about the fact.
“Yeah,” I scoffed. “That stupid prophecy,”
“I don’t think it’s stupid,”
“You’ve haven’t spent centuries wondering what it meant,” I argued back:
“In the days when evil lurks around every corner;
The condemned will become innocent;
And the innocent will become condemned;
True love can reanimate a deceased heart;
Under the star of Great Dog;
She will become alive as time is altered;
Two souls will be set free that day as the star takes her place.”
“True love,” I scoffed again; my lips pressed together. “Like some sort of stupid fairytale,”
“I thought you said that fairytales weren’t stupid,” Draco raised an eyebrow at me smirking.
“They’re not,” I rolled my eyes. “Believing that there’s true love out there to save me? That’s stupid,”
“Then maybe there’s no hope for any of us,” Draco sighed. “If someone like you can’t find true love, where’s the hope for the rest of us,”
A smile ghosted me lips at his words as I looked over to him, his eyes still trained on the water.
“You’re really sweet sometimes, you know that Malfoy?” His eyes darted to mine as his cheeks tinged pink.
“Will you come back inside?” He asked softly. “The library isn’t as interesting without you there,”
“Sure,” I smiled warmly at him.
Fall turned to winter turned to spring, and Draco and I spent a lot more time together than I cared to admit. He was almost easier to talk to than anyone else I had met. And that was saying something, because I knew Remus Lupin, who was fascinated with my fascination of the young Malfoy.
But all the same, I found myself crave Draco’s company more and more and cursing the Baron for not letting me see him while he was in his dorm. It was rough when he came down with a cold and I wasn’t able to see him for a week. No number of books could distract me from the fact that he wasn’t there to talk to. That he wasn’t here to talk to me. I had never missed anyone like this before.
But when he felt better, we’d press curfew to mere minutes just to get another word in with each other. Then he’d have to be human and I’d have to remember that I didn’t belong in his world and never could. It didn’t stop me, however, from finding and talking to him the next day. Or the day after that. Or the day after that.
Then there was a day in late spring that caught my attention as Sirius had finally gotten to Harry and his friends, but things had gone from bad to worse as I watched the scene unfold, doing the only thing I could think of, I spirited away to find Remus. He would know what to do, he would know how to help.
After I had explained what I had seen, Remus grabbed his wand and took off towards the Whomping Willow. I followed him, and as soon as I left the castle, I felt the dark presence of the dementors around me.
“No!” I shouted, going up to meet them, and for the first time in a long time gave into my spiritual power, long enough to hold them off and let Remus pass through safely.
I hovered over the Shrieking Shack, keeping the dementors as bay, away from Sirius, away from Remus. They didn’t dare to go near my pure light that was amplified by the full moon. Soon I saw the three of them emerge, Peter in chains, when the light of the full moon hit my little Remus.
With a cry of desperation, I did my best to keep the dementors away as I watched the horrors unfold before me before I couldn’t take it any long and chased after Remus, who was not a wolf into the wood.
“Remus!?” I shouted; my voice lost with the wind. “Remus, it’s me! Please come out!” I caught sight of Hermione and Harry and gestured that they should leave, and quickly. “Remus!?”
I heard a growl and turned, seeing golden scared eyes.
“Hey,” I cooed softly. “You’re alright, you can’t hurt me,”
A pained howl left his lips.
“I know,” I replied. “But you’re going to be alright, let get you back, yeah? To Prongs and Pads, they’re waiting for you.” Tears I wanted to cry weren’t shed at the pitiful heartbreaking whine that left his lips.
But he let me lead him back to the Shrieking Shack all the same. I stayed with him until McGonagall and Dumbledore came. There was a soft thank you from the both of them. I drifted back to the castle, pacing in anxiety.
“Y/n?” It was Draco’s voice. I turned.
“Draco, it’s not safe!” I squeaked. “What are you doing out of bed!?”
“I had to see you,” He confessed. “There are rumors, about Black and Lupin... I thought you’d... Are you alright?”
“Draco, really,” I glanced around, cursing that I couldn’t drag him inside to where it was safer. “It’s not safe for you out here,”
“Bloody hell, Y/n, what about you!?”
“I’m already dead! So, unless you’d like to join me!” I shouted, realizing after the fact what I had said. “Draco, I didn’t mean that,”
“You’re keeping things from me,” It was a broken accusation. “About Sirius, about Remus,”
“Draco, please,” I pulled away. “I... I have to go, I have to make sure that he’s alright,” My eyes trailed up to the top of the tower, knowing that I may have been the reason that Sirius was in chains again.
“No!” Draco shouted, drawing my attention.
He had never demanded anything of me before, not like this. It wasn’t the fact that he told me to stop, it was the notion that he had found his own voice in it that caused me to pause. I waited for him to continue.
“I’ve spent all year, all of my three years here, knowing you, and getting to know you and I’m not going to let you walk away again! I want to know! I don’t want this you can’t tell me act. If anyone, you can tell me. Can’t you trust me? Please,” His voice broke, unshed tears in his eyes.
“Draco,” My non-material heart broke a bit as he stood before me, vulnerable. Shaking and terrified I nodded. “Remus... is a werewolf. Sirius is an Animagus. Peter betrayed the Potters, and Sirius went to confront him. Peter faked his death and killed all those people and it was blamed on Sirius...” In my nervousness I began to ramble:
“...and Sirius and Remus confronted Peter tonight and Harry and his friends were there and I had to fight off dementors so that Sirius would be okay because I couldn’t bear to see him get hurt for something he didn’t do and then I had to go and help Remus because it’s a full moon and he won’t hurt me but for the love of merlin he will hurt you so will you please go inside!”
Draco gaped at me, in utter disbelief.
“Please Draco, go inside,”
“Only if you come with me,” He recovered.
My thoughts for Sirius were forgotten as I took a step closer to him. Instead, all I could see and focus on was the heartbreak on his face and the hand that he held out for me. A hand that I wanted to accept but knew that I couldn’t because I would phase right through him. Never had I loathed being dead so much but in that moment when all I wanted to do was comfort him.
For the first time in almost two hundred years, tears slid down my cheeks. I barely noticed.
“Please,” His voice shook as did his hand as it remained extended to me. “Please, Y/n,”
The moon fell behind the mountains as the sun shed her first light onto us.
And with reckless abandon, I reached out for him, for his hand. In desperation and false hope, closing my eyes, knowing my heart would never break more that in the next few moments for not being a part of his world.
Then my hand felt softness and warmth.
I gasped and jerked back, and Draco seemed to realize this as I did.
“You just...” He stammered.
“I...” Trembling, I held my hand up, the sunlight no longer passing through it but refracting off of it. I finally reached up and felt the wetness of tears on my cheeks as I gasped in pure joy.
“I’m human,” I laughed, “I’m human!” I marveled at my rosy skin and the soft green fabric of my dress as I felt the grass beneath my feet. After a moment, I, at last, looked to Draco, who seemed to be frozen in a state of wonder and disbelief, and almost... scared.
“Draco,” I called softly, “It’s me,” I offered my hand to him, the grin not leaving my face.
“You’re... and...”
I nodded and smiled, taking a step closer to him. “Not scared of ghosts, are you?” I teased softly.
He finally laughed and took my hand, pulling me close, into the comfort of his arms. I began to cry again because for the first time in two hundred and fifty years, I was hugged. I clung to him, my fingers marveling at the softness of his shirt, trailing up into his hair.
“Merlin,” Draco pulled away softly. “You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this,”
Before I could ask him what he meant—or argue that I had been waiting longer than he ever had—he pressed his lips to mine, and in that moment, I swear I could have died all over again in his arms.
