Envy
summary: hc's for Bill being jealous and doing awful things to everyone around you
pairing: yan! jealous!Bill Cipher x gn!reader
tw: toxic behaviours, mention of sex (at the end), death of a pet
his actions would be dependent on how much you spend time with either him or them - whoever "they" are. A pet? How cute, how silly, oops it's dead! What? It would die in a year anyway, stop making a fuss.
do you have a pack of friends? He wants to meet them! Let's see what kind of worthless scums try to take your attention from him!
a partner??? Do you know how much those things take from yours his time? You should break up with them this instant! Chop chop kid we have galaxies to overthrow!
at first he would be delicate, testing the ground and just manipulating you into spending more time with him. Maybe he would start adding some praise here and there, maybe doing actual nice things, like creating an (actually edible) meal out of thin air, or stopping the rain when you don't have an umbrella on you
just for you kid, just for you
soon it wouldn't be enough tho. He would start possesing you - promising he needs only twenty minutes and won't harm your body. Why not, what could go wrong?
this way he would "meet up" with your friends. At first he would just break in to their hauses and watch them sleep, wondering what do you see in them. What alse would you possibly need that he can't offer?
he would start reading their diaries, sometimes destroying the pages in the fit of rage at a mere mention of you. (The same would happen with their minds, if he would notice them dreaming about you)
would put ropes and knifes everywhere, break every lightbulb, draw triangles and ominous runes that somehow make their insides itchy. Maybe he would switch their salt with sugar. Or arsenic, who knows.
what would happen if all of that wouldn't work? That you still hang out and are even closer? That you start suspect Bill has been doing something suspicious lately? He would move to a different tactic of course.
also would tie them in their closets and set their homes on fire
it would be making you intruduce him to all your friends. He would make you sing praises of him and all his good deeds. After all, he's your inspiration, companion, best friend, your everything! Why not spend time with your other friends and "loved ones" together?
(he would not acknowladge your partner as gf/bf, no, it's just "that other mammal", but what's wrong with that, Bill is just Bill, he calls people stupid names all of the time!)
oh how cute you are, not noticing how uncomfortable all of those meatbags are. You just adore him, right?
every time you'd leave the room he would start gushing about you two spending time together. He would imply you prefering him, loving spending time with together, laughing and doing interesting stuff alone, just the two of you, kinda like a pair.
he would make gross remarks about their appereances, getting right into their insecurities. But why would that matter? They are not good enough anyway!
he would also posses you during sex making you moan his name instead of your partners. But don't act so fussy! It was just a joke!
if he would want to especially get under your partners skin (not litterally this time) he would gush about you hugging and kissing him every day. In reality it's just him squizing and licking you but tbh he doesn't see the difference
he would destroy all your matching clothes and accesoriess, no matter if it was with your friends, family or partner. It could be some 6 year old ex memrabilia, he doesn't care, it goes to the fire when he finds it, the only one you can match with is your lord and saviour Bill Cipher!
but don't think he would be only cruel! He would always whisper you just the sweet nothings when you're tauching yourself! Oh come on, just go on and stop telling him to leave, he needs to study human anatomy!
over all, this guy would be possesive and cruel not only to you, but also everything in your proximity

Hello! I saw your Sugar Sugar AU post! I've actually had a draft saved for a Sugar Sugar Rune inspired twst story. I wasn't very confident about posting it, since I didn't think anyone remembered Sugar Sugar Rune anymore, but seeing your post really gave me the drive to finally finish it!
Is it okay if I tag you in the prologue? As a thanks for finally giving me the push to kick off the series?
[Referencing this post!]
Hello, hello! ^^ Omg, that's so exciting!! Small world, huh? I wasn't sure myself if anyone would know Sugar Suar Rune since it seemed pretty old based on the publication date. (I found the whole series at my local library and got really enraptured in the items in the magic catalogue, which reminded me of stuff you might see in Twst!) I guess it hasn't completely been lost to the sands of time! I'm glad that the coincidental timing of my post ended up giving you the push you needed to finish your piece. Feel free to tag me when you put the prologue out there!

Oooh would love to hear more about the older shoujo works you've been reading lately! /gen
Princess Knight: finally finished the omnibus my boyfriend bought me ages ago. very neat to finish a Tezuka work and one of the grandmothers of the entire medium
The Poe Clan: bought the first volume, one of those aforementioned "omnibuses that could double as a weapon," i'm halfway through and really digging it so far, Moto Hagio's art is incredible
Fushigi Yuugi: a few chapters in, "original isekai" jokes aside this is probably the most "teen girl fantasy" of everything i've been reading recently, with the cute boys and "escaping my stressful life" situation. i like Miaka a lot and actually like her dynamic with Tamahome, and i'm really curious as to how Yui is going to factor into the story
Basara: i like Yumi Tamura's art a lot and i've read a bit of Don't Call It Mystery and have really wanted to read some more, and i think it's cool that she's done this kind of big dramatic post-apocalypse epic, but i'm a few chapters in and i dunno, it's probably not going to be for me, especially now that i reached the "hot springs" chapter and now know who the love interest is going to be lol. i've heard good things about 7 Seeds and going purely by the description i feel like i would be more interested in that
Neighborhood Story: i like Ai Yazawa's art but again i don't know if this one is going to be for me. i still want to give it a few more chapters
Phantom Thief Jeanne: i LOVE this setup and i enjoy the characters. i got the sense from other's comments that Chiaki was going to be a lot more unbearable but ehhhh he's not so bad really? conversely i feel like i should like Miyako and Maron's relationship more but somehow it feels like they kind of dropped the ball on establishing their friendship- AND SPEAKING OF DROPPING BALLS LMAO, this is so nitpicky but i don't like the running gag where Miyako constantly drops balls (??) on Maron when she's annoyed, a subgag of that thing where 80% of these manga has one character smacking another for the dumbest possible reasons. and before you say anythiiiiing i'm not saying it's problematicccccc it's mostly just dumb and annoying. also lmao at the fact that Miyako's dad is drawn as an ugly chibi in the manga but in the anime he's just a normal dude???? ok lol
Pretear: i'm reading one of those mid scanalations i mentioned earlier lol. i'm enjoying it but more than that i want to watch the anime specifically which seems like it kind of a more "complete" version of the story? also i'm happy to read this one because Pretear is one of the first magical girl animes i heard about other than Sailor Moon (in a now-defunct American anime magazine lol)
speaking of magical girls i so badly want to read Rayearth and Sugar Sugar Rune but i think i'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy physical copies, i tried a scan for SSR and the translation was annoyingly bad
haven't touched the manga yet but i've been loving the Dear Brother anime and recently started watching Glass Mask with my boyfriend too
this one is way too new but it's worth noting, Kageki Shoujo was basically what sparked this recent shoujo kick for me, damn what a good series (and is also very heavily inspired by older shoujo series so hey! full circle!)

Why Miraculous LadyBug Is the Worst Thing To Happen To Magical Girl Genre in All Its History.
It would be easy to sit here and tell you all the logical reasons why Ladybug is a bad show. It has horrible pacing, it has low stakes, repetitive episodes, and a dialogue that is cringe worthy enough to get its own tiktok sound.
But saying that, would be beating a dead horse at this point. Everyone knows this show is a bunch of wasted potential, only made worse by a director who keeps thinking he created gold, when in fact he messed up in a lot of areas – particularly the fact that he’s a grown man who thinks he knows what little girls want.
I’m not here for that.
Particularly, because I can be quite forgiving to shows like this. I mean, they’re kids' shows! Meant for little girls, and I haven’t been one for a few years now. But I still enjoy them.
Why? Well, cause I’m a massive fan of Magical Girl animes. I love the glitter, the sparkles, the silly adventures with friends, and the transformation sequences! Even with all its flaws, I really like them. So, stories or shows that borrow from them, get a pass in all these things.
I mean, I have fun re-watching WINX Club, I love Star Vs The Forces of Evil despite its flaws. Steven Universe holds a deep place in my heart and She-Ra is…She-Ra is in its very own league of how amazing it is.
So, no. Be it a very dumb show or a very smart one, I can have fun. It’s very rare when a show with, you know, glitter, girly stuff and animals CAN’T hold my attention.
But, well, MLB failed at that.
It’s just, not a good show.
I mean, it could be. But the age demographic would need to drop several, several age groups just to be barely watchable – and even then, I seriously doubt that it would be good for young girls to watch it. The lessons it teaches are concerning, to say the least.
And at this point, you may be thinking,
"Why do you care so much about this show? It’s dumb and you’ve acknowledged it treats its demographic as toddlers. Why do you care so much?"
Well, because I've been here... for a very, very long time.
Listen, I started watching Miraculous Ladybug, back when I was in high school. Maybe a bit old, but, hey, a lot of unique cartoons came out around that time. (Star Vs, Steven Universe, etc). So, I was hopeful. Really hopeful.
Mainly, because I was here before it EVEN premiered. I remember it. The original PV was 2D animated and it had this vague Princess Tutu vibes that JUST I couldn’t resist. It was clear as day that it borrowed a lot of its inspiration from magical girls from the 90's, probably even 80's.
The premise looked similar enough to Kaito Jeanne, and Kaito St. Tail for me to draw those conclusions.
It had a dynamic very similar to Princess Tutu and seemed like a mix of silly and dark like that one was.
To be honest, I could even see hints of Sugar Sugar Rune with Pierre and Felix.
Not to mention, the animation was beautiful.
I will never, never forget that scene with Chat looking at Ladybug starry-eyed under the Paris Moonlight. That was so beautiful, a genuine touch of romance that rang so similar to the Magical Girl animes I grew up with.
I was thrilled, I was excited. I wanted this show to succeed, before even the premier had dropped.
This is all to say -
I never came to this show with the intention for it to fail.
And I didn’t expect nor want it to be ground-breaking or a giant of the genre. I just hoped I could have a fun time.
I didn't want subversions, I didn't want it to be dark, or deep. All I wanted, was sparkles, fun and a good time.
So, when it first aired, I tried to stay positive. I tried to like it, even when it had all these massive red flags.
I’ve never been a big fan of 3D animation, and especially not how it’s used in Magical Girl animes. (We all know the disaster the first season of Sailor Moon Crystal was).
But I swallowed it down.
The characters were different from the original PV
But I swallowed it down.
The background scenery was bland and generic and hardly felt unique.
But I swallowed it down.
I was here since day 1. I was here when Stormy Weather premiered. I was here before many of you were, and
I swallowed it all down.
Because I really, really wanted this to be good.
And I really thought it would.
But things should have been made clear, when they fucked up the one thing they shouldn't. The one thing that held this all together. The one thing that kept me here even as everything was burning to the ground, and I was too naive to realize it.
They fucked up the thing that started all this, to begin with.

More greatest hits from the Neoworld Timeloop AU, this time starting Himiko. For Himiko, part of me just wanted to reference different styles of magical girls. So these outfits have elements from Ojamajo Doremi, Sugar Rune, Shugo Chara, and Tokyo Mewmew.
Season 11 was the Ace Attourney homage, and the vibe is pure unadulterated cringe. Her and Kokichi bickered a lot this season, with them 'ironically' spending time together to debate over kids shows. She's the vicitm of the fifth trial, having triggered a trap set in chapter two by Kokichi. He ends up not being the killer, but the guilt she got caught because of him throws off the final trial.
Season 15 Himiko spends most of this season quietly working on her trilogy, with many gags revolving around how she never sleeps. After she finishes it, she has nothing to channel her anxiety into and the stress of the killing game gets to her. Able to sleep peacefully after, she barely remembers what happened, and is abel to bluff through most of the trial before getting pinned by a lack of alabi. It takes the group a while to realize the murder weapon was a pencil she was still wearing in her hair during the trail. Her trial has her sacraficed to a robotic dragon.
Season 52 Himiko's the mastermind, leaning heavily on the idea the killing game is one giant LARP session with an emphasis on 'live'. Card suit and card games were heavily utalized as a theme, and Himiko's end dress is inspired by the Queen of Hearts. Right before the vote, she preforms a basic card trick, pulling opposite colored 'matching' cards. Her patter, revolves around balance, opposites. The vote is cast and the group realises too late, the two survivors left behind will take the roles of Mastermind and Ultamite Survivor for the next game. Himiko's bombastic 'final show' execution ends with her declaring that she will take the last bow. Some of her 'tricks' were left behind after the reset for S53, including trap doors and secret exits.
(Amino's been janky for me, so I can't upload anything atm)

The video accompanying this project (turn the subtitles ON ^^)
For what may or may not be the very last episode of my YouTube videos "Redesign", I decided to work on a comic and cartoon that fought then lost a war between 2 italian licences of fairy magical girls (which is injust because it's way more cool) : "W.I.T.C.H" !
Note-worthy differences :
-my take on "W.I.T.C.H" will be more… well, witchy… than fairy, so we can avoid any look-alike with "some" other cartoon with fairy magical girls. So they'll have no wings but capes that help them flying
-I wanted to work on wand/magic staves, so I gave the girls (except Will) wands inspired by the manga "Sugar Sugar Rune". Said wands will be hidden under the looks of jewels like in the end of issue #44.
Wilhelmina "Will" Vandom
Age : 14 Sign : Capricorn Likes : swimming, skateboard, biology, animals (especially frogs) Hates : being betrayed, bullies, math Role : Guardian of the Heart aka Quintessence, chief of WITCH Amulet : Heart of Kandrakar pendant Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, energy blasts, empathy, creation and control over every kinds of energy, magic detection
If I could rewrite the character, I'd make Will some kind of loner boarder struggling with heavy trust/self-worth issues. She'd stay a newcomer in Heatherfield with her divorced mother. And she would have some rocky start when she fights bullies to protect an injured dormouse. After detention she'd meets Irma Lair and Hay Lin, and find a pretty pendant in her bag once in her flat. The day after, Will goes to the Silver Dragon, sees Irma and Hay Lin and meets Yan Lin. Yan Lin reveal all the lore about the other worlds, the Veil and their role as its Guardians. Even thought Yan Lin remarks that the Heart of Kandrakar already choose her as its weilder (by protecting the dormouse, secret test of character, ya know), Will would refuse her destiny at first and would flee on her skateboard. After a certain period (like, 3 quarters of the chapter/episode), Will would accept her role and to serch the last 2 Guardians. Throught the story, she'd have to accept that she can't do everything by herself and that by trusting others, she can learn to love herself.
Irma Lair
Age : 13 Sign : Pisces Likes : relaxing, eating, turtles, music, joking Hates : her loved ones being hurt, sports, seriousness, inappropriate jokes Role : Guardian of the Water Amulet : bracelet Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, creation and control of water/ice/mist, underwater breathing, telepathic influence, healing
If I could rewrite the character, I'd like to make Irma a childhood friend of Hay Lin, growing up together and knowing almost everything about eachother. When Yan Lin reveals their role as magical protectors of the Earth, Irma would be the most enthusiastic of the lot despite Will’s reluctance. I’d like to keep her in the role of the clown in the group who manages her insecurities through humour. But I’d like to take it to a higher level. In the sense that my version of Irma would be one to take sometimes reckless risks in the midst of battle without paying attention to her own safety. Her long-term goal throught the story will be to accept that she is just as important as her friends and must be able to protect herself before thinking about protecting others.
Taranee "Tara" Cook
Age : 13 Sign : Aries Likes : calm, science, music, dance, photography, basketball, hoods Hates : crowds, insects, uncontrolled noises, people touching her stuff, wind on her neck Role : Guardian of the Fire Amulet : hair pearl Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, fire creation and control, heat manipulation
If I could rewrite the story, I'd like to take some time to assemble the group, like I said in Will's rewrite In the episode/chapter 2, our first 3 Guardians would still need to find the other 2 chosen girls among their schoolmates. And I think that Taranee would be the first to be recruited at the end of some convoluted events to brief her about the situation and make her accept magic's reality. In terms of personality, I think I'd like her to be on the spectrum. So she have some analyzing capacities, but also difficulties understanding emotions and irony. She'd be really sensitive to sounds and airflows, hence the headphones in her normal form and the hood in her transformed form. Her low empathy would hinder her to use her powers to the maximum and to make a place for herself in the group. During the series, she would learn to let herself go a little more and to try to develop her empathy. It’s kinda difficult, but she does her best and it’s sincere.
Cornelia "Corny" Hale
Age : 14 Sign : Taurus Likes : ice skating, studying, being elegant, winning, being right, being a leader Hates : being wrong, losing, water (she can't swim), not being in control of the situation Role : Guardian of the Earth Amulet : ring Powers : invisibility, telepathy, flight, control of earth and minerals (rock, sand, crystals), creation and control of plants, telekinesis, vibration detection
If I could rewrite the character, I'd like to make her the last to join the group around of the 3rd-4th chapter/episode. And her integration will not be without difficulties given her personality. Indeed, my Cornelia would be a proud upper-middle-class young lady, thank you. She grew up in a privileged environment that led her very early to adopt a haughty princess attitude with everyone. She's indeed an excellent student who participates in the clubs and extracurricular activities necessary for her studies, but it is more to please her entourage than by real interest (except for ice skating). Her need for attention and control doesn't help her to be appreciated when she tries to take the place of chief. By becoming a Guardian, Cornelia would become aware of some of the world's realities, become more honest with herself and learn to let it go, which is why her long hair is detached in her transformed form.
Hay Lin
Age : 12 Sign : Gemini Likes : arts & crafts (drawing, painting, sculpting, sewing), tinkering, making magical objects, sci-fi, having fun Hates : lying, being compared to her grandmother, gossips Role : Guardian of the Air Amulet : pin's Powers : invisibility, telepathy, levitation without her cape, winds control, cloud gathering, overdeloped hearing, reading an object's past, lies detection, premonitory dreams
If I could rewrite the character, I'd like to make Hay Lin a childhood friend of Irma, growing up together and knowing almost everything about eachother. She'd lived in the knowledge of magic, the Veil and the rest through her grandmother and began at a very young age to tinker with small magical objects. For example, the group's wand-amulets are of her work. She has long blamed herself for not being able to tell Irma the truth and would want to be more honest with her friends. Hay Lin is used to observing the Silver Dragon's clients, which taught her to decipher micro-expressions. Thus, she always knows how the other WITCH feels and always does her best to console them whatever their worries. Secretly, she fears not being up to Yan Lin, who's considered a Guardian of legend by all of Kandrakar. Throughout the story, she'll accept that she is not and does not have to be like her grandmother to protect the world as long as she gives her maximum in what she does.

Alphys Kissy Cutie Masterpost
MAIN STORY
Pages 1-15 / 16-19 / 20-23 / 24-27 / 28-31 / 32-35 / 36-Miku / 40-43 / 44-47
BONUS COMICS
Alphys Quits Her Job
More info below
Glad to see you here! I started planning this comic in July of 2023 due to not wanting my dream comic to be my first comic. This was supposed to be a short story, but... it's not going to be that anymore. I planned too much. I had too many ideas. I got too invested in the characters. Womp womp.
This comic is hand-drawn. This is because OK KO does this too and it looks funny. I color this digitally though, you can't make me buy a million colored pencils or markers. This is also going to be a big learning experience for me to draw things that aren't just characters. Bear with me, alphygoers.
I'll be updating with multiple pages every Sunday! I'm currently experimenting with what time works the best, but right now I'm trying out 12:00 PM MDT.
MAIN CHARACTERS THAT HAVE APPEARED SO FAR
Alphys
Did you know she's in this comic? I sure didn't. This came to me as a surprise. Alphys is a teacher at Toriel's school on the surface (this takes place around a year after Undertale's pacifist route). However, she got hit by a bus and ended up in the setting of Mew Mew Kissy Cutie! Uh oh! How tragic! Isn't that tragic?
Rouxls Kaard
Rouxls was hit by a bus, so he's here too. He suddenly showed up with hopes of teaming up with our nerd emoji of a protagonist. Cool.
Mew Mew Clowder
The leader of the Kissy Cuties. Overly cutesy and outgoing. Reminiscent of Raku-chan from Nyan Neko Sugar Girls.
Natsuko Mischief-Scurry
15-year-old magical squirrel of the Kissy Cuties. They fly around and weild an energy spear. They seem really bitter.
Youmu Mischief-Scurry
Purple-haired rat magical girl with a giant hammer. She's a lot quieter than the other Kissy Cuties and does things of her own accord.
Midori Ostentation
Peacock magical girl with robot limbs and brass knuckles. Outgoing and overall glamorous.
AND NOW, A LITTLE LESS THAN MAIN
Undyne
Undyne's running around jobless on the surface. She's living with Alphys and mooching off of her lmao
Papyrus
He's the one running around with Undyne the majority of the time.
Sans
sans.
Mettaton
The idol everyone craves! He lives in a huge ass mansion now and has made more of a name for himself.
LINKS TO OTHER COOL WEBCOMICS
This is a list of webcomics I've been reading recently or ones that were a big inspiration to my story. You should really check them out. They're great.
Starscale
This is my best friend's WIP comic! We've been developing them side-by-side for a long time now, so they're basically sister comics. The child version of the main character (Zoey) actually appears on page 7 of my comic... Also, the art and character design is really cool and detailed! No pages are out yet, but when they are, they will be at @/starscalecomic
Twin Runes
This comic was a major inspiration for me to make an UTDR comic of my own (I'm worried my masterpost looks too much like theirs lmao). This is an UTDR crossover that's pretty funny and has a really cool art style to boot. You're more likely to know about it than this comic, but on the off-chance you don't, you can read it at @/akanemnon
Forgettable
A comic based on the Papyrus is Gaster theory! The story's really cool, Alphys is there, the art's really great and expressive... it's awesome! Once again, it's very possible you've already seen it, but if not, it's at @/forgettable-au
Gaster's Return
Another fancomic with Alphys and amazing art! It's about Gaster coming back after the pacifist route. Flowey's also really awesome and expressive lol. You can read it at @/gastersreturn

i really love your art style!! aside from jojo, what other shows or comics would you say you learnt from?
Thank you so much for your message!
I currently take a lot of inspiration from Araki Himself but also from Junji Ito (manga not anime). When I was a kid I watched shojo anime like Pretty Cure, Kodomo no Omocha, Sugar Sugar Rune, Tokyo Mew Mew...
I also let many movie inspire my style, such as my ultimate favorite: "Perfect Blue", or some hidden gems like "Audition" or "Possession".
More mainstream media like "Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" or "Educazione siberiana".
Finally, I must confess Disney and DreamWorks movies shaped my style.

out of curiosity why dont u consider rgu to be a magical girl story? i feel the same way tbh (i also think this about klk) but i cant really articulate why, im just wondering about ur thoughts on the subject :>
because utena ultimately doesn't fit the bare minimum definition of what a magical girl actually is. she isnt a girl with magic.
the magic itself is debated to even exist but utena most certainly doesn't hold any of it. and utena is neither a magical idol, warrior (which is what most people think she falls under) nor a witch, which is what anthys role is, not utenas. also anthys role as a witch is meant to be symbolic of the whole girls get two roles in society: good chaste damsel or wicked witch thing that the story criticizes. utena as a story doesn't actually deconstruct magical girls as much as it criticizes fairy tale tropes specifically. the only magical girl tropes that are ever brought up are ones that overlap as pure coincidence because girls media as a whole often uses fairy tale tropes. utena has a transformation sequence but that doesn't mean anything since CCS doesn't have one and super sentai often does, and sentai ISNT considered part of the genre or even considered "magical boys" despite being far closer to the common idea of magical girls (fighting heroines) by virtue of being the main inspiration for a lot of them.
also i've seen people argue that because of anthy being a witch the story counts as a magical girl one but if that's the case then any story with a witch in it should be part of the genre which is obviously not the case.
honestly i think calling rgu magical girl is unhelpful both for fans of the series and fans of the genre. it doesn't make any sense to recommend utena to a fan of precure over something like lolirock or mermaid melody or even ultraman, and it doesn't make any sense to recommend sugar sugar rune and tokyo mew mew to someone who watches utena and wants to see more shows in the same genre.

Halloween, 1890
A rather spontaneous entry for @hp-12monthsofmagic, and partially inspired by @the-al-chemist tw: mentions of blood, harmless shenanigans, and nods to previous works.
Friday 31 October 1890
There was an excited buzz in the castle, one that had been steadily growing since last Saturday. Honeydukes had been raided, and the houses seemed to be planning their own parties on top of the Ball Headmaster Black had planned for the upper years.
The House parties seemed far more interesting, at least compared to how Kendal described last year’s ball.
“Pureblood mania, I swear.” Her expression, contorted with disgust, only added to her annoyance. “I don’t have a clue how they’ve managed to survive on that principle and yet work so close with no-majs, it’s astonishing.” She growled. “Though it was far better to attend in other ways – less bloody and macabre, more… shall we say, delicately spooky.”
He raised an eyebrow at that description. “‘Delicately spooky’? How?”
“No one will come running at you with a bloody knife, Cyrus, unlike our last Halloween at Ilvermorny. I’d think you would appreciate that.”
He shuddered at the memory. Isaacson had been all but expelled for that stunt. The cow’s blood had been the worst part, considering the stain it had left on the old bedsheet he’d used. “Anything sounds better.”
So here he was, trying to calm both his racing heart and shaking hands, as the rest of the guys got ready. Garreth was taking Aurelia Blackstone, a fifth-year Ravenclaw. Leander was meeting Vivienne Eastbrooke, and Neil and Oswin were meeting a pair of twins.
And he was meeting the admittedly beautiful Florence Morgan at the Great Hall.
Kendal had set them up, much to his annoyance. But Eleanor had been avoiding even talking about the ball. Leaving his younger sister to set up the match.
As they headed down to the Great Hall, his friends picked up their dates. Leander and Vivienne, then Oswin, Neil and Garreth as they passed the Ravenclaw common room. He kind of recognised Aurelia from Potions class, maybe Ancient Runes.
Greeting Florence at the Entrance Hall, he also spotted Deek, manning the entrance to the Great Hall. Florence greeted Deek with a small wave as they slipped inside.
It was about how Kendal described it. Some dancing, some drinking, certainly some schmoozing, reminding him of the few gatherings he’d attended while recovering. In some ways, the decorations were far more interesting than half of those even attending.
And he tried his best to not step too often on Florence’s feet while they were dancing. He did pretty good. Even as the sight of huge pumpkins paused their circling of the dance floor more than Florence seemed to like.
She eventually pulled him towards the drinks table, passing over the punch, and handing him a cold Butterbeer.
Part of him was growing bored of the ball, and he longed to return to the Gryffindor common room, and the party there. No one here seemed to talk about anything other than their family or the job they were promised after Hogwarts.
Florence seemed to grow equally as bored, asking to be walked back to the Hufflepuff common room, which he agreed. Apparently, several of the ‘puffs were planning something and Florence wanted to be involved. She didn’t say what, and he didn’t ask, and he headed back to Gryffindor tower.
Giving the password (felix culpa), he entered to the Victrola playing some unknown music and the youngest years chasing each other around the common room in a sugar fuelled rush.
This was more exciting than the Halloween Ball. Someone had even enchanted the common room ceiling to look like the night sky.
“You’re back!” Eleanor exclaimed, dodging a pair of first years barrelling towards her. “Have fun?”
He shrugged. “This is far more interesting.”
She grinned, a mischievous twinkle appearing. “I snuck in last year,” she admitted, voice nearly drowned out by the yells. “Why else would I prank the headmaster like I did?”
He gaped at her, before roaring with laughter. “That explains so much. And I’m guessing you’re plotting some more mischief right now.”
She only grinned, tapped her nose twice, before rounding up the younger students. Handing out several notes, she gave them a few more sweets, before leading them out the portrait hole.
He followed them out, joining Eleanor near the Fat Lady.
“I’ll not tell a soul,” the portrait said cheerfully, followed by the nods of several others. They headed back into the tower after a moment, hearing distant whoops and shouts.
This All Hallow’s Eve was feeling particularly bright.
fin. for now.

A Basquiat alphabet: alchemy, an evil cat, black soap, corpus, cotton, crime, crimee, crown, famous, hotel, king, left paw, liberty, loin, milk, negro, nothing to be gained here, Olympics, Parker, police, PRKR, sangre, soap, sugar, teeth. These were words he used often, names he returned to, turning language into a spell to repel ghosts. The clear use of codes and symbols inspires a sort of interpretation-mania on the part of curators. But surely part of the point of the crossed-out lines and erasing hurricanes of color is that Basquiat is attesting to the mutability of language, the way it twists and turns according to the power status of the speaker. Crimee is not the same as criminal, negro alters in different mouths, cotton might stand literally for slavery but also for fixed hierarchies of meaning and the way people get caged inside them. […] These days Basquiat is among the most expensive artists in the world, his images franchised and replicated everywhere from Urban Decay blusher pots to Reebok trainers. You could scorn the commercialisation, but isn't it what he wanted, to colour every surface with his runes? He's a cash cow, just as he predicted, making rich white people richer, but maybe his spells retain their secret power. They could hardly be more necessary, since the forces against which he arranged himself are unequivocally on the rise. [...] 'Who do you make a painting for?' he was asked in a filmed interview in October 1985, and he was silent for a long time. 'Do you make it for you?' the interviewer continued. 'I think I make it for myself, but ultimately for the world you know,' Basquiat said, and the interviewer asked him if he had a picture of what that world might be. 'Just any person,' he said, because he knew that change is coming all the time, from everywhere, and that if those of us who are leaning on the doors get out the way, freedom might be a possibility—yeah, boom, for real.
