Eyes & The Observer

Lo: [she/he/it/etc] A member of an alien race called “the observers” by others. Every ship has an observer on board. They are not assigned, they merely appear at a seemingly random point in the journey.  Observers are not naturally humanoid and are merely appearing so to better blend in. When asked what their goal is their answer is “to observe.” Observers never help when things go wrong. They also lack the ability to feel or express emotion (it would impede observation). This makes them generally disliked.  Lo can die but will just come back again after a time. While observers cannot feel emotion they can experience pain - this is to encourage them to take care of their humanoid bodies which they might otherwise neglect due to not being used to the form. However, some observers in recent years seem to be incredibly paranoid about self-preservation after dying or becoming hurt too many times. Observers can form interpersonal relationships with the crew but this is rare as they are upfront about not helping even if their ‘friends’ are in danger. Some choose to mimic human rituals like eating lunch, sleeping, or showering but others just watch the crew. It’s unclear what Observers are doing with this information. It’s also unclear what they consider to be a breach of their purpose as many observers do offer up information based on what they’ve witnessed. Lo is an Observer who has recently died. It has been reborn aboard the same ship Magnolia pilots. Magnolia: [she/her] A human woman. She is the pilot of her small exploratory vessel. Her official title is “Eyes” because her ship is in the shape of a human head, modeled after the person who paid for its construction. She looks through the eyes to navigate. Magnolia is a person who radiates an aura of hesitancy and sorrow. She has become somewhat isolated by the others aboard her ship because she’s considered to be standoffish and a mood killer. She’s incredibly compassionate but has a difficult time explaining herself to others in a way they understand. Magnolia is very frightened of other people and ends interactions as quickly as possible, leading to others finding her unpleasant. She never attends social events and seems to be more at ease figuring out aliens than she is with herself and her fellow humans. It seems she didn’t used to be this way. She considers Lo her friend, even if he won’t help her if she’s ever in danger. She and Lo have kissed before but she’s unsure what to label their relationship as. She’s often very worried about Lo.

It doesn't go anywhere!! Didn't I draw a whole bunch?? (I remember making a backup log on pixiv and over a hundred pieces were focusing on them just them alone..!) Of course, I'd love to draw more... and I'm sure I will! BUT I have ONE body, and when I get really focused on one thing, it really makes me hard to look at another. Sometimes I wish I had multiple brains and bodies...

I'm a multifandom person so please bear with me.. ;v; my mind gets whisked off to different things and even I can't predict what I'll end up loving so much next! I'm glad you remember about my shuyuka works though!! I had a heart for them for AGES.. and I hope the DLC does a good job with portraying yukari's character, she had some really powerful moments in FES and I'm curious how that's going to be revisited in P3R. I will definitely be drawing them again and persona stuff too, I can say that for sure because FES DLC...that's going to break my heart so bad. It scares me a little but I'm sure the new staff will do a good job the way they handled the base game.

i want to write haladriel fic but i have no ideas at all. got any suggestions?

this is very subjective, but here are some specific things i personally would love in my haladriel fics (i'm not including the hcs/aus that i love but that are already popular like the mind-palace):

galadriel's scars left by morgoth's crown being sensitive to sauron's touch and smtms even craving it bc only he can soothe the pain.

sauron loving to take care of galadriel's hair. washing/brushing/braiding it. playing with her locks whenever he is happy or nervous.

incorporate finrod more. we can't overstate his importance in trop!galadriel's story. he had shaped her wisdom and lightness, his loss has left a gaping hole in her heart. avenging *him* is her driving force. everyone goes "what about celeborn?" but the "third" *individual* between sauron and galadriel will always be finrod. it is *very* interesting that it seems halbrand filled the hole left by finrod's absence for galadriel. and how sauron used that...

don't soften galadriel's relentless opposition and fight against sauron. don't water down her hatred. for me, what makes their sexually-charged push-pull dynamic so much more interesting is that her hatred of sauron is so strong it's part of her identity, and then, it suddenly gets mixed up with her love for halbrand, her connection with halbrand being above everything else - what a jarring contrast! + knowing that her sworn foe loves her? so much existential and emotional angst. don't downplay this fascinating psychological aspect of galadriel's feelings in favor of "taming" her hatred *and* pride. and since u are asking for my opinion, here is my meta on galadriel's feelings for sauron.

don't water down her darkness either. even in the 3rd age she has it. yes, she is the lady of the light but not in a "saint" kind of way, rather in a powerful warrior/witch of the light kind of way. she is sauron's mirror and she has sent countless elves and numenoreans to their deaths bc of her belief in her divine destiny. she is a hero whose light is blinding, and she constantly battles her darkness but chooses the light and this is why she is the opposite of sauron.

one thing that defines galadriel the most, i'd say even more than her being the lady of the light, is that she wants to be a leader. we can think of galadriel as a warrior, a commander, a witch, a queen, a politician, the lady of the light, but in all of these roles she is a leader. and she always determines and does things her own way. at best, it makes her a successful outlier. at worst, it makes her an outcast. so i would like to see more of that with her.

it can be said that in some ways, finrod is an excuse for her obsessive fight while her main desire is glory, power and recognition, and her main drive is her own darkness and ambition to be the one who slays sauron and saves all middle-earth so that everyone bends their knee to her. she likes being a crusader in the 2nd age, and being a powerful witch in the 3rd age. i would love these traits to be highlighted in fics.

there is a dichotomy in either's feelings for the other and i think it's fascinating to explore. especially with this season highlighting sauron's (maybe subconscious) wish to worship her vs. his (desperate) need to possess her. i actually would love a mythological au where sauron is a delusional and obsessive worshiper of that universe's god of the light galadriel. could be an interesting mystical concept to explore. (insp - 1, 2, 3, 4).

the backstory about warrior!galadriel's adventures, her quests and crusades. the more she fights and desires power, the more alienated she is amongst elves, but it's almost as if she isn't alone. it's not just finrod's dagger that keeps her company, but the perpetual presence of her sworn enemy she is devoted to slaying on her mind! he is always with her, the thought of killing him calming her down and comforting her.

unpopular opinion! i actually don't mind love triangles. like, i would hate anyone getting in the way of haladriel in the show itself, but it can be fun in some fics. and it *could* work with anyone - i would prefer celeborn and adar but i wouldn't hate gandalf or even elrond (i prefer him as gal's bff ofc). even morgoth as sauron's abusive ex could work.

MODERN AU! guys, i really need it. and when it comes to the modern aus, i like them fluffy hurt/comfort tbh. young love type of stuff. but it also can be ceo!galadriel x secretary!sauron. in a modern timeline, galadriel would 100% be a careerist striving for a leadership position, while sauron would be a perfectionist in either crafts or service industry. also, would love a larger cast of characters.

1: harrowhark nonagesimus -- the locked tomb saga

if you've read the locked tomb, this one's pretty self-explanatory. but i took a lot of inspiration from harrow's grief-sodden religious zealotry for esper's pre-tadpole self, and i think about harrow the ninth every time i write from esper's perspective during the events of the game. it's the amnesiac goblin madness for me. esper would also absolutely put their bone marrow into a soup to kill someone if that was something they could do. they're extra like that

2: isaac -- castlevania (netflix series)

i just fucking love isaac, man. he's such a fascinating character, taken from a place of pain and degradation into the service of a mad god-figure hellbent on destroying humanity, then banished and forced to just. figure out for himself what he wants to do with his life. and it turns out that what he wants to do is relate to the hellbeasts he raises to use as soldiers, and let them try to eat strawberries and live in houses for a change, take a chance at living as something other than vessels of violence. i love him. that's really all esper wants, too -- to find a peaceful existence after a lifetime of pain and brutality and monsterhood.

3: cole -- dragon age: inquisition

cole is such a vibe. he lives in the attic staring unsettlingly at people and reading their minds and exhuming their pain so he can help them with it, including with his knives. he has that unearthly creepy vibe that esper projects, as well as their tendency to poke around in people's private emotions and their slight uncanny distance from human morality and ethics. making cole more human also ends up around the same for esper -- cole is never quite all the way there, but happy to be truly Among the people whose souls he reads and finally able to experience those things for himself.

4: blackbeard -- our flag means death

apart from the leather and queerness and propensity for violence, blackbeard was also a big influence for esper's journey from "yeah, this violence thing is fun for me, besides it's not like i can Leave this life, i'm stuck here so i might as well enjoy it" to "actually even though it's fun it's also exhausting and all i really want is peace. maybe even a monster like me can love and find a community that loves me."

6: seven of nine -- star trek: voyager

god, where to start? "i was a child who was raised to be perfect, my humanity and individuality were completely overridden and my very body was used as an object for unimaginable violence, and now even though i don't know how to be a Person anymore, i'm cut off from everything i've ever known and i don't know what to do." and now, like seven, esper is just trying their best to build a personality out of the leftover scraps they have with the help of their crew of misfits and weirdos. also, perpetrator trauma -- like seven, esper doesn't feel Guilty about their past actions, but it does haunt them, and they don't really know what to do with it. also, i didn't mean for the two images of esper and seven here to make them look exactly the same, but hey.

7: katya zamolodchikova -- real life / unnnhhhh

this one's more of a bit. i watch unnnhhhh with my wife a lot, and every now and again katya will just say something that makes us both go "that's esper-coded". she has that slightly imperfect balance of genuine darkness and unhinged silliness that esper also teeter-totters between, which results in a specific kind of charisma that you kind of have to see to understand.

8: paul muad-dib atreides -- dune

esper's pre-durge and pre-tadpole backstory draws a fair bit of inspiration from paul's narrative arc lmao. he starts out life as a male heir to a bloodline of female psychic specialists, trains with them, and ends up sacrificing his humanity to fulfil a violent divine path pre-ordained for him. real evil messiah hours. esper has way fewer qualms about killing from the start, and the match isn't perfect, but this is an inspiration, not a stencil.

9: maomao -- the apothecary diaries

another weird one, but probably the most purposeful inspiration on the board here. when i was first playing as esper and trying to sort out their personality, i was also watching apothecary diaries, and maomao's feline predilections and sense of mischief and flawless composure and cunning without ambition had me completely enraptured, so i thought, what the hell. she also shares some backstory elements with esper as the [spoilers] bastard daughter of a disgraced but extremely talented courtesan and a creepy war tactician. like esper, maomao just wants to keep her head down and make enough money to fund her special interests. they also both drink poison for fun (at least, esper does pre-tadpole). i think the main thing they diverge on is that esper thinks poison is for basic bitches.

pretty self-explanatory for any cat owners out there. esper acts like a cat in general, but they specifically act like this cat. she's so influential and talented and perfect.

towa "murase" -- slow damage

this one is an honourable mention instead of being on the board because i didn't meet towa slowdamage until like 3 weeks ago (well after esper was already realized), but the two of them have so many specific things in common it's actually ridiculous. convergent evolution at its finest.

fenris -- dragon age 2

esper and fenris have very little in common story- or personality-wise, but i can't deny that he was a huge visual influence, especially for pre-tadpole esper. i mean, come on. look at him.

yelena belova -- black widow, hawkeye

i'm not much of an mcu person, but the concept of the black widows in general did influence a lot of esper's pre-durge backstory, and i like yelena. she's like a more charismatic and more down-for-murder natasha. she's not a specific inspiration for esper as a character, but they do have a rhyming vibe.

selcis aureus, umbras heltor -- exodusbound

hello, it's fantrolls! i disqualified selcis and umbras from the inspboard because they're literally other ocs i had a hand in creating, and a lot of the things they have in common with esper aren't public, but they both did (and exodusbound did in general) have a lot of influence on esper as a character. i can't help that i like themes of alienation and life persevering in spite of it all in my characters. art shown here by my wife barbelzoa!

literally a pokemon, not a character. special place in my heart though because i literally named esper after this thang when i first made them in the character creator. they just had the same dead eyed stare and psychic magic, so i went, yeah, that'll do.

hey! i was just curious if i could use your art in an artist study? i looked over your faq and i didn't see any mention of it so i just wanted to ask. it's okay if the answer is now, no pressure :)

now that being said, i would also like to share with you some artists whose work i've enjoyed doing studies of! i find it's very useful to "follow the money" with artists you like, and go along the chain of inspiration to see how ideas and styles can change from person to person.

vincent van gogh is my BIGGEST inspiration in terms of color and composition! his unique style of brush work is what he's best known for, but i recommend looking at his works holistically too, and seeing where the eye is led and how he plays with light, color, and mood. if you want to go further, he was very inspired not only by prior impressionists, but also by japanese ukiyo-e artwork— try comparing "starry night" to "great wave off kanagawa" and seeing the similarities in the grand, sweeping movements they convey.

i'm sure i've said this a million times, but genndy tartakovsky has probably my favorite cartoonist style. it's at its peak in samurai jack— opinions are mixed about the narrative quality of season 5, but if nothing else, the art direction is absolutely jawdropping. one of my favorite scenes is the bit in the tomb, where jack is hiding in a sarcophagus, because the music and visuals are paying homage to a scene at the climax of "the good the bad and the ugly"!

in a totally different direction from those two... i'm a huge fan of gil elvgren's pinup girls! i've had a few different pinup calendars over the years, and at the end of the year, i like to cut up the pages individually for mini posters— i've covered pretty much all my available wall space in his illustrations. i love it when artists don't feel the need to sacrifice expressiveness for realism; his girls are SO DARN CUTE and they all look like they're having so much whimsical, cartoonish, flirty fun!

i'm also just very heavily inspired by 50s-60s print illustration... things like advertisements, "clip art" (which you had to physically clip out of a book and paste onto the page), and of course, tv cartoons. one big trend i love with that "googie" art style is how incredibly limited the palettes were, and how efficient the economy of line was. as much as i love the bold, blocky, dynamic shapes of styles like tartakovsky, who takes insp

also, please remember i'm entirely self taught and am NOT an expert, so just be aware of that if you see any weird stylistic choices in my work... i admire the work of a lot of professionally trained artists, but that doesn't mean i have any training or real right to go around teaching people stuff. i'm just some guy from a big crazy family full of artists, only some of whom went to school for it.

chap.1 - arrival

A/N: That took so long for people who knew about this, damn. It’s not too long either though, I hate writing solo scenes and I want this posted. I’m sorry lmao

Well, today's been an... odd day. Not even an hour ago, he was taking his last breaths after shooting himself square in the chest, bleeding out drastically in Vincent’s arms… and now he’s... Well, he’s somewhere. Whatever this place is though, it hurt so fucking badly falling onto the ground from it. He let out a pained grunt as he hit what felt like cold, hard concrete, the world turning into nothing but high-pitched ringing and pitch white for a while for what seemed like an eternity.

He laid still for a second, observing his surroundings as best as he could through his blurred vision. Holy fuck, it was loud too, even when muffled behind the ringing of his hearing. He stumbled up off of the cold, cracked concrete he seemed to be on, just about falling over once he got back on his feet. He felt incredibly dizzy, as if he had spun in repetitive circles for some peculiar reason. To be fair he had dropped at least 50 feet onto the ground.

Once he readjusted his vision by blinking, he discerned his now clear as day location. The red sky was definitely new, but ironic as it is, it seemed to affect absolutely nothing. Obviously, at least. Austin could breathe perfectly fine. The tall buildings around were also tinted red by the oddly-colored sky. What the hell happened to Brooklyn? It didn't look like this before, and even if it wasn't, where would it be? Hell? He can't be in Hell. The person sighs. He probably looks fucking stupid right now, like a sheep that strayed from their herd. Clearing his throat he starts to walk around the city, being sure to keep that grin he's oh-so used to making.

He folds his arms behind his back, his eyes narrowed in an attempt to hide the fact he's confused out of his mind. Where is he? How did he get here? Damn, his head hurt. The fuck is that? WHAT'S GOING ON?! He continues to stroll down the street before suddenly bumping into somebody, stumbling back and dropping his arms. The forced smile he had held upon his face falls, clearly caught off guard by the unforeseen collision. The person he had hit gets quickly pissed off, trying to start an immediate fight. "Aye, fuck was that?!" they snapped, their jaw clenched as they stared at the startled singer, baring what looks like a full set of sharp teeth, albeit for an off-center missing one. Austin raises his hands up in defense, trying not to follow through with his inner emotions. "It was an accident, I-"

"You watch where you're fucking going, asshole," they grumbled, their eyebrows knit. They had a clenched fist as well, clearly looking for a fight. They also had a heavy Russian accent, which seemed to cut right through the atmosphere, and was a heavy contrast from Austin's high-pitched Brooklyn voice.

"You watch what you’re fucking saying!"

"I swear to Satan, I could just—" Taking a step forward, the oddly-looking stranger was about to pounce on Austin like some wild animal when suddenly he heard a gunshot, eyes wide as he watched them fall to the ground, a giant gunshot wound in the side of their head. He stared down as the blood trickled from their now indented head, the liquid painting the sidewalk. Austin was more-so a phlegmatic individual, but any average person would probably be loosing their mind right now. To be fair, he had recently witnessed a front row seat to a homicide. He didn’t care though, he was practically use to it.

He just went on with his day, stepping over the limp body beneath him on the ground. He kept observing his surroundings, as if analyzing it. He simply didn’t seem to be cognizant to his location. He would assume Hell, but no. That’s not a real place. If there’s no random man in the sky that supposed created the universe, there sure isn’t a counterpart to that. All that ‘god’ stuff was bullshit, honestly. People go off into some so-called sacred building and pray their hearts away. Yeah, cause that’s supposed to do something. If there really was a god he wouldn’t have grown up treated like an orphan in poverty. Fuck, he probably would have been better off if he were an orphan. At least he got past it.

He longed to look more confident as he walked, but he was all too disoriented to understand anything. He coveted someone to be able to explain all of this, but nobody was present. Well, nobody was present and was willing to help, more accurately. If only his brother were here. He would know how to help.

Toying with the fingers on his pale white gloves, he continued to observe. This place was so dirty and unkempt. It couldn’t get worse then this. He accidentally stepped on an empty alcohol glass, staring down as he heard it shatter beneath his shoe. Well that’s wonderful… At least the glass hadn’t penetrated the sole of his shoe. That was good, there wasn’t much he could do for a bloody foot right now.

Fuck, he needed a cigarette so bad. He briefly paused to reach into his pocket and grab his pack, only to realize it’s unexpected absence from his physical possession. What the fuck?

He double checked in his pocket, then in the other, just for his confusion to be confirmed. He didn’t have them anymore. Well, fuck. That’s awesome.

About to walk off, he feels a set of hands on him, letting out a yelp as he felt his smaller body get pinned up against a cold, jagged brick wall. He looked up with wide eyes, vulnerability bleeding through him as he gazed at the person pinning him down.

They looked abnormal as well, like how the guy that had attempted assault on him was. Nonhuman. They were staring down at him with a grin full of debauched intent, their eyes narrowed into slits. "Hello, gorgeous… Lost?.

"Uuuhh," his voice trailed off, unsure of what to say. "N-Not really, why?"

"Need somewhere to go?" they asked once again, continuing their disturbing glance.

"No, I- Get off of me!!" He attempted to get them off, his actions insuperable as their grip on his wrists do nothing but tighten like an iron grip.

"Keep squirming and I won’t give you as much mercy as I want to."

Continuing his resistance, he kicked at them with no success, when surprisingly something actually happened. The stranger stumbled back, putting a hand on their forehead and tangling gently into their hair. They had a newly clenched jaw, and their eyes showed to be… spiraling? It was a sort of black and purple pattern, and it seemed to have a definite toll on them.

He felt a light weight on his back too, which wasn’t too new since he did have back pain sometimes, but this was different. Instinctively, he spun around to face the brick wall, only to see nothing but the torn up wall. The feeling still remained, though. He spun again, until he abruptly felt a sharp pain, as if a part of him smacked against the wall. Looking over his shoulder, his eyes widened at the now present wings on his back. That’s new. They’re pretty, too… Wow. It still hurt a bit though. Did he smack the wall with them? He tries to move it, but to no correct avail. This was gonna take a while to understand.

Hold on. How did he have those? Oh my g.. is he actually IN Hell??? There’s no way, but there’s no way he isn’t. It would definitely explain why everybody looks… inhuman. But aren’t so called “demons” red? That’s the only confusing part. Not the only, but one.

He looks to the side. Oh. There’s a giant sign that says “Welcome to Hell.” That’s… Self explanatory. Alright then. Is that why he keeps getting attacked? Like immediately?? Aren’t people in Hell, you know, morally wrong people? Why is HE present here?

…Oh wait. He killed people. No shit he’s here.

Pause. If everyone else looks different, does he? Oh god no. He probably looks terrible. Actually… No. He’s hot as fuck, he’ll look handsome.

He takes his way out of the alley, being sure to actually look where he’s going. This town really was an oddity.

He’ll get used to it eventually.

what’s your process on rendering hair? i love the way you draw you’ve got gorgeous colors and artstyle plus the way you draw hair is so detailed and natural looking, love it :D

thank you so much!!! that means a lot!!!🥹 i have diff approaches for coloring diff charas hair (eg cedric vs jesse)... but the way i draw hair/hair shines is heavily inspired by cardcaptor sakura(1998 anime)..!! (mentioning bc maybe u could get insp too... ahh it's still so lovely...)

as for my process... most of the time i just do base color + shadows(*often too lazy) + hairshines... and again i learned a lot from studying ccs and yyh...

i color jesse's hair the most detailed i think... i mentioned before that i learned how to color golden hair(for jesse) from looking at these rapunzel screencaps lol... like looking at how the shadows and highlights and colors look... i think these 2 were the most helpful to me bc it shows the same hair in 2 diff lighting conditions (in shadow + stepping into the light)

my fav part of drawing golden hair: going crazy with highlights!!! that rly enhances the shiny golden look...the highlights r the diff btwn the 1st and 2nd pic there^ also tip: darkening under the highlights rly makes hair look shiny! (same for fabric)

a v important thing to keep in mind when coloring hair is the form..!! as u can see from those screencaps the highlights r created from raised areas... like the waves in rapunzel's hair and the top of her head... so keep in mind the shape of the hair..! (same thing for the shadows)

as for black hair... it depends on my lazyness lvl dkfbdm sometimes i create the hairshines with negative space by painting individual brushstrokes in black and other times i just color it like other hair (fill in the black base color and add shines on top)

i learned how to do the former from observing webtoons, manga, other artists etc... ex: (from lilac 200%, yyh)
