i have all the love in my heart for queer kids and adults, particularly those who want to seek out and connect with their kind. it's a life-changing experience to be able to meet people like you in the real world. it makes you feel less alone. i blame nobody for wanting that.
but the real world is still a dangerous and unpredictable place for a lot of us. if the only place you've ever encountered queer people is online, it can be easy to assume that the things you interpret as "tells" are laid there and published intentionally, the same way they would be as part of someone's online presence. but sometimes they aren't. sometimes they're subtle on purpose, because they don't want anyone to notice. sometimes they're out of the person's control. sometimes they're a deeply-held insecurity.
the way a person expresses themselves is deeply personal, especially the way they express their queerness. making assumptions based on a person's presentation, calling attention to those assumptions, outing them, doesn't create that queer-to-queer connection you want. it doesn't. sometimes everything is alright, i won't fearmonger, but more often than you'd think, it can cause harm to yourself or the other person -- often enough that i can't stress enough to use caution.
you truly never know what another person is thinking, feeling, or going through. that goes both ways, too -- the person you're talking to doesn't know what you're thinking, feeling, or going through either. they don't know that this interaction is meant to be harmless, and for all your good intentions, depending on who they're around, it may not be. maybe you've just pulled a rug out from under them, made them self-conscious, but... well, the rest of the post lists enough examples. violence (of all shades) is as much a part of the real world as queer people are. outing someone is something ONLY to be done with EXPLICIT consent. anything less than that, and for all they know, you're just as much a danger to them as a -phobe.
at the risk of repeating the well-said points in the post above, stick to complimenting the hair or the nails or the shirt, or what have you. it doesn't assume anything about the person's gender or sexuality, it doesn't put you or the other person in danger, and most out queer people i know (including me) will still come away from that much like "hehe. queer solidarity" without vocalizing it in a way that makes the assumption anyone's business. hell, even if it's coming from a cishet person, it's a way to make a queer person feel seen and supported in their visibility without it being necessarily linked to their queerness. everyone likes being complimented on their hair. plus, it's a lot more likely to open a friendly channel than a pointed callout of their queerness, if that's what you're goin for.
all this to say, it's complicated. love and support your fellow queer folks, but never forget that their queerness is none of your business. i want the world to be a kind place for us, and it can be perfectly lovely! but, y'know, don't tempt anything by outing strangers, or outing yourself to strangers, for that matter. keep safe, and keep your community safe!
Sometimes i feel like younger queer kids are getting a bit to bold with openly talking to people they don’t know In The Context Of:
More than once i have had a younger/same age queer person come up to me in public settings and say something about “finding other gays” or clearly clocking me as nonbinary and I’m like :)))))))) hey buddy I’m here with my conservative parents can you fucking not out me :))))))))
Just say you like my outfit or hair and move on, fuck even tell me you like my shoelaces. Don’t call me gay and limp your wrist at me when you don’t even know me? Especially when there’s a bunch of ppl around?

for esper! can't stress enough how fitting this is. one of their main conflicts of faith in their former service to bhaal is the fact that they can't let go of their memories of being loved, of being a person, of the pain that's been inflicted on them. the dust and blood Aren't as precious as they're supposed to be -- they just remind esper of the more holy, ephemeral thing the relics used to be, something they loved and destroyed that they can't let go of. this also inverts when they lose their memories -- they seek to preserve and reconstruct what was, so they can carry it with them into a new world and learn from it, tell its story, do it justice, carry out the remembrance of a broken person who has nobody else left to mourn them.
thanks for the tag!! you know i fuck with this concept so hard. and you're so right the quiz is very good. @beecreeper , @vlaakithsfinest , @quacaserous , it's on y'all now!
tagged by the wonderful @threeofswrds
Tagging: @smallnico, @lamortwrites, @hippotooth (sorry for any double tags) and anyone else who wants to play!
Take this quiz to find out what your OC would be the patron saint of
For all three of my Dark Urges -
Vesper - patron saint of obsession
patron saint of devotion. of dedication. of passion. of everything you won't call it, in the spaces between. patron saint of holding tight to it until it bleeds. patron saint of pushing it too far. patron saint of staring into the sun until you're blind. patron saint of gazing onto beauty until you can't see anything anymore.
Very fitting. Vesper has always been one to push it farther, to reach for more, to ignore anything and anyone caught in their ambition's gears
Aunrae - patron saint of lost faith
patron saint of leaving it by the roadside. patron saint of it slipping out of your fingers. patron saint of searching and searching. patron saint of yearning for it back. patron saint of scraping your fingers down to the bone trying to hold on to it. patron saint of losing it anyway. saint of lost faith. not the saint of getting it back.
Also very fitting! Aunrae keeps losing things - her family, her second family, both of her homes, her friends, her lovers, her faith, even - and getting nothing back
Cyril - patron saint of creation
patron saint of explosions. patron saint of More. patron saint of something new entirely, something unfamiliar, something you can't recognize. was frankenstein's monster an abomination or had his like just never been seen before? you're the patron saint of all those new, beautiful things. you're the patron saint of the monsters, too.
This one I wasn't as sure of at first, but now it's clicking. Cyril definitely wants More. He wants love, he wants attention, and he's trying to bend himself and the world into something that can give and receive it all

I directly translated Astarion's back scars

I'm a language nerd (even when the language is fictional), so I decided to directly translate the sigil that Cazador carved into Astarion's back.
I know you do find out the gist of what the scars mean in-game, but I wanted to translate it letter-by-letter, and then word-by-word.
We know that its a poem written in Infernal, which is the language of devils and the hells. If you translate it from Infernal, you get the following:
"Hoc inferius non iurare per ignis
Haec verba loquor
Et hoc mundo mutat"
As you can see, this is not English; its Latin, which makes sense since its a "magical language". Now, if you translate the Latin to English and fiddle with the grammar a bit, you get something like this:
"This I swear by the fires below
I speak these words
And this changes the world."
Obviously this ties in very closely with Astarion's backstory and I think its very cool that Larian took the time to actually make the scars real text instead of just random texture.
ETA: I want to point out that the "non" in the first Latin sentence doesn't actually make grammatical sense. I think its probably there to look cool/fill in the physical design, because excluding it makes the sentence itself make sense, and its exclusion works in the context of the sigil's purpose. So that's why I omitted it from my translation.
#baldur's gate 3#bg3#astarion#larian studios#your local tiefling bard is here to translate infernal#the infernal language also looks cool as hell#almost like the letters are calligraphic ambigrams

sometimes i'll find myself listening to a description of something in the magnus archives and i'll feel in my bones exactly what johnny sims was looking at when he got the inspiration for something. for example

do i know that this is what inspired michael? no. do i feel very strongly that it was a contributing influence? perhaps
