i went into this episode questioning the sole focus on harmony right after the gemma-focused episode but now i am going to defend this choice until i die. they are BOOKENDS. they are in CONVERSATION WITH EACH OTHER. the severance process itself has become a character and this is its backstory. gemma walking down hallways of bright white walls and harmony driving through streets bracketed by pale white snow. the inventor of severance grew up doing child labor. the severance process is supposed to be the answer to all grief and all suffering. gemma is suffering. hellyna is suffering. dylan and irv and mark are suffering. milchick’s hands shake while paper clipping documents. MISS HUANG. do you see the beautiful devastating soup i am stirring

this also adds a new layer to how much the board disregarded cobel each time. she was constantly trying to please them? the board wouldn't even listen. she, the creater of severance procedure, believed reintegration was possible? the board knows better. she, the reason of lumon's success, wanted her position back? the board thinks she has overestimated her contributions and underestimated her blessings.

this episode was so fucking good. the dilapidated town ravaged by addiction. the traces of lumon still left everywhere from the faded paint signs to the casual way it's ingrained in the culture. "she still follows the nine." the religious aspects of it all. harmony's visceral grief. the sound of her breathing into the tube turning into an eerie wail over the crashing waves. the height markings from her childhood on the doorways. the old dusty myrtle eagan school for girls yearbook. her clutching the designs. HER designs. my god

Harmony Cobel worked 10 hr shifts at the ether factory as an 8 yr old and then went on to design a procedure that would allow people the 'luxury' of not having to remember their work life. Raised in the Lumon cult (but well aware of how it ravaged her hometown) I imagine she thought severance a kindness.

gently wish to suggest that kissing your ether addicted ex-coworker on your mother's deathbed might not be romantic or sexual at all and may in fact be the product of being a woman on a mission to reclaim every single fucking thing your bosses have ever stolen from you, including the normalcy of being able to have a childhood crush and daydreaming about how you and your 8-year-old colleague met over a vat of sweet vitriol just like your god/hero kier and his industrious wife imogene. perhaps you are not horny for a dude but are in mourning for the futures you both lost to corporate greed, the futures that were stolen from every person in your cold and desolate hometown, which you were forced to leave behind before you were 13 so that you could be groomed into middle management. perhaps you are hell bent on righting every wrong, even this one, however silly it seems in the moment.

devon actually being 100% correct in her decision to call ms. cobel might be the most insane part of this episode

lumon was doing regular child labor for decades and then they were like what if we had adult workers that were children too

the people hating on the Cobel solo ep r crazy bc for me one of the biggest mysteries of the show has ALWAYS been "wtf is up with that absolute freak?" She is so deeply strange and captivating. Finding out the specific kind of madness that has been motivating her methods has haunted me since she was talking about de-icing her stoop, and now we know! child soldier PhD student mourning both her mother and her stolen IP!!! THATS why she's crazy THATS why she is so incomprehensible and strange. obsessed obsessed obsessed.
