genuinely no line will EVER hit me as hard as Hinawa’s “You must be so exhausted” at the end of Mother 3. it’s literally the perfect line at the perfect time in the perfect context. and depending on where you are in your own life, hearing it is incredibly cathartic. it’s the sense that finally, finally someone recognizes how tired you are. and then Claus gets to rest, because yes he is exhausted, and it’s time for him to go to where Hinawa is now. he’s just a kid and he’s so tired. he’s ready to rest. it’s so tragic yet cathartic at the same time. that entire scene just hits every single time and nothing can compare

how seventeen act with their writer s/o
requested by anon ^^
masterlist
seungcheol
he is begging. he is on his knees BEGGING you to pls let him buy you a new laptop because the one you use is literally on its last legs and makes ominous sputtering n whirring sounds like a dying cat stuck in a vent every time you start it up. you don't let him tho bc “no cheol the memories :(((“ cuz you've had it for years but he is nearing the end of his tether and who knows. in a few days ur laptop may mysteriously disappear forever and you'll be forced to let him buy a new one
jeonghan
he's like the pet cat you don't own who likes to slink into the room and make inquisitive noises as he watches you work. drapes himself over your shoulders and makes distressed huffs when you try to dislodge him. he's never usually noticeably clingy, but when you try to write, the clinginess always springs out and you can't go five minutes without jeonghan poking his head into the room to check up on you and see what you're up to
joshua
your biggest fan. buys every single novel you write, puts on his glasses, and reads them very seriously in one go on the very evening it's released with the lamp on beside him. he looks so serious every time, but he'll always peer at you over his glasses and then give you a big grin, telling you how much he loves it. gets you to sign a copy for him and brags to everyone he knows that he has your signed novels with special messages just for him that no one else can have
junhui
he's your personal general knowledge bank. when you're searching up obscure things and slowly losing hope on finding an answer, just ask junhui and he'll either a) know the answer or b) knows someone who knows someone else who knows someone else else who knows the answer. don't ask him how to spell words tho bc he's like. hopelessly bad. blinks at you going “what's an [insert word]” before you give up and google it yourself
hoshi
alwaysssss wants to know what you're working on right now. gets all whiny when you get possessive of your work and refuse to show him before it's finished bc come on, it's surely perfect already, why are you trying to hide it from him?? loves helping you do, like, the non writing stuff. writing out plot? nooo. building fantasy maps, figuring out political systems, getting lost on a tangent on figuring out the price of beans in the 1800s? hell yeah sign him up!!!
wonwoo
knows all the grammar rules in the world. you can ask him stuff like “hey wonwoo can i put a comma here or no” and he'll amble over to peer over your shoulder and tell you whether you can or cannot, in fact, put a comma there. helps you curate all your writing playlists for the different moods you have. gently reminds you to get back to writing whenever you end up scrolling on instagram for too long
woozi
you're even more of a workaholic than he is when in the zone, so he gets to realise how unhealthy it is to be sat in front of a computer for hours straight with no break. you get to act as each other's “let's act like a normal human being now” reminders, depending on which of you is going through a work fixation. you guys both go on runs together in the mornings even though it kills you bc at least it gets both of yo brains kickstarted to spend a day being all creative in ur respective fields
minghao
you value his opinion above anyone else's. above your beta reader's, above your agent's, even above your editor's bc those are more like advice, not opinions. but knowing that minghao likes your work, and knowing which parts in particular he really likes, is so important to you because ultimately, you want the person you love to also love the things that you create.
mingyu
brings up the fact that you're a writer in every conversation he has with anyone ever. “oh my god look, this menu has writing on it. speaking of writing, my s/o writes actual books as a job!!!!”. your agent made him sign a contract similar to an NDA bc he just keeps yapping about your books even when they haven't been released yet. loves the noises you make whilst you're writing. thinks it's the cutest thing ever when you make overjoyed “AHA!!” sounds when you finally realise what the plot is doing
dokyeom
more than willing to be your rubber duck and let you talk at him until u figure out your own plot holes. he could be in his room scrolling on his phone but the minute you call for him, he's leaping up and bounding over to you and pulling up a chair in an instant, more than willing to let you bounce ideas off him. sits there doing nothing but looking all pretty as you talk at him and work out the tangle you've gotten yourself into. beams and gives you a big kiss when you manage to figure it all out.
seungkwan
he buys you a biiiig wheely whiteboard and a bunch of coloured board pens to help you plot your novels. when you get stuck, he comes over and stares at the board with his hands on his hips, very gravely considering your dilemma and what would be the best way to get you out of it. you two talk about plot holes like it's the most serious thing in the world and he just nods like a proud father once you both find a solution
vernon
at this point he's like. a professional tea and coffee and biscuits supplier due to the amount of snack runs he does for you. has walked in on you lying face down on the floor during a meltdown one too many times to bat an eye anymore. also great at helping you block out actions during scenes like. he's the perfect doll. lets you maneuver him into the weirdest positions in the world with zero complaints. he just loves helping you however he can, really.
chan
reads through your drafts whilst you're in the middle of writing, accidentally gets hooked and is begging you every day to finish the novel bc he really wants to know what happens next. he's the best at spotting inconsistencies and plot holes in ur writing so before you even send it off to your beta reader, he gets to have his hands on the manuscript to check for any changes needed. also bc he needs to read the ending asap otherwise he'll probably combust.

How to Handle Critique
I’ve got to admit, I wish I was one of those beatific saints that could take critique with a grateful smile. Instead, I am constantly suppressing a horrible little gremlin at the back of my head hissing at anything from legit plot critiques to grammar corrections. I’m well aware I used that comma wrong, GOD.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m very good at suppressing that gremlin, but the little bastard is still there. He exists because even though your brain knows critique can help, it also knows you worked damn hard on the thing being critiqued, and goddamnit, isn’t that enough???
Anyway, here are some tips on getting that gremlin to shut the hell up.
It is okay to be upset. You worked really hard on this thing, and now someone’s gone and pointed out all the things that suck about it. You cannot control how you feel about one thing or another, but you can allow yourself to feel that way and let it pass through you. Let your critique partner you’re taking time to reflect on it, and go for a walk. Do something else. Let those feelings pass through you before you get back to the page.
Give yourself time. Don’t feel like you need to correct things right away (unless they are minimal grammar tweaks). Some pieces of feedback might take awhile to sink in, especially when you’ve got a whole novel to wrestle through. Set it aside, think about something else for a week or so, and get back to it when you’ve reset.
Get a second opinion and/or ducky friend. It can be very hard to tell the difference between good and bad feedback sometimes. Someone who means very well could give feedback that just doesn’t work for you, and someone who doesn’t give two shits could have spotted that fatal flaw right away. You can bring in a real third party or just make use of the old rubber duck technique, where you talk through the issue with a friend or a Naruto poster telling you to Believe it. Working it out out-loud is a really effective technique to figure out what needs fixing and what doesn’t.
Guide critique-givers toward the feedback you want. I, a person who prefers straightforward fantasy and sci-fi, cannot give the fine-tooth points on how a romance novel should work. However, I can give feedback on what works for me and what doesn’t story-wise. Giving your beta reader or critique partner a list of questions to look for will help avoid vague feedback based on how they don’t like the genre. There are many ways to do this, but consider using the following as a base to tailor your own questions:
Did you get a good sense of the setting? Did the worldbuilding make sense to you?
Was this story clear? Where there any parts that seemed confusing?
What characters did you like and why? What characters didn’t you like?
Did any parts of the story feel slow or repetitive?
Did the beginning draw you in? Did the middle keep you engaged? Did the ending feel satisfying?
If you were to write [insert plot point here], what would you do differently?
Again, all of the above questions are up for debate depending on your goal, but we are rarely taught how to give good feedback, and a guided feedback session would work better for you than a free-for-all.
Figure out what kind of advice doesn’t work for you. It is really hard to give good feedback sometimes, even with guided questions. It can also be really hard to figure out why some feedback doesn’t click with you, and that’s a matter of digging deep to figure out what you really want. You may lean toward characters who are horrible fuck-ups, but your partner prefers more steady characters who always strive to do the right thing. Your characters, therefore, may never click with this person, no matter how much they want to help you. And that’s okay! Figuring out where your critique partner is coming from can help you figure out what parts of their feedback isn’t working for you. Sometimes the only thing you can do is thank them and move on, but you might also want to guide them to focus more on the plot or the worldbuilding when looking at your work.
And last, don’t focus on grammar. It’s great if they point that out, but if you end up changing everything, trying to fix that first is a waste of your time. Grammar tweaks last, plot points first.
And, I dunno, give yourself a treat to get that horrible little mind gremlin something else to focus on. Sometimes patting those bad feelings on the head and sending them away can help way more than ignoring them.
#writing feedback#writing advice#telling yourself this feels bad and I don't like it is okay!#even if you asked for that advice it can still hurt!#just let it pass and you'll be okay

୨୧ ‧₊˚ ⋅ how you tamed monster!sylus…
warnings: descriptions of some violence, blood, injuries, rushed ending (lol)
character: sylus
link to master list here!!
author’s notes: i saw some theories that sylus is actually inhuman and i’d fucking love if in a past life MC resonated and ‘tamed’ him which is why he’s particularly fond of her, like i’m such a sucker for ‘inhuman’ things gaining humanity through love
my requests are open since i’m running low on ideas hehe :3
more under the cut!
monster!sylus was indifferent to everything at first, if you got hurt you got hurt. why would he feel anything?
he’d hurt many things before, killed many things before. such trivial matters did not bother him.
that was until, somehow he managed to get hurt.
watching you, a human, far more fragile than he could ever be panic over his wound was confusing for him.
the way you frantically dug in your bag to wrap his arm in gauze - his blood seeping into the pale cloth as he watches you, intrigued.
he could stop the bleeding at any moment, any time, but he doesn’t. instead, he opted to watch you flailing over his injury with a neutral expression.
only when he noticed his human form growing a little pale did he decide to stop blood flow to the wound, choosing to inspect the bandage you put on him carefully.
“What use is this?”
picking at the uncomfortable material, you scold him and tell him to ‘keep it on until it heals’ - monster!sylus decides not to tell you he already healed the site as soon as you finished fussing over him
the next time he got hurt, he decided not to heal himself and instead present his injury to you.
holding up his finger which was (basically) broken in half, he looked at you expectantly.
if you weren’t so utterly dumbfounded at the nonchalant manner in which he presented you with a severely mangled appendage you might’ve made a comparison to him and a cat looking at its owner after bringing them a dead rat
monster!sylus who proceeded to watch you freak out a little, fix him up then scold him (again) for being so reckless.
he was interested at the care you took to make it as painless as possible (it was safe to say you were terrible at it, he was trying not to wince the whole time. yeah he was a monster, but why are human bodies really fucking fragile and sensitive?), eyes flitting between your hands and your face
this was probably the first instances of sylus receiving care, being cared about, and holy shit he didn’t know what to do
monster!sylus that would inwardly sigh every time you’d ask him ridiculous questions such as “have you eaten today?” or “do you think the sunset today is pretty?”
half the time he would scoff or shrug it off, the other half he would respond
when he responded he noticed the excited buzz in your voice as you’d give your own opinion on it - something that he grew to care about
“What do you think of this flower, isn’t it pretty Sylus?”
“It is?”
“It is! At least to me- [insert you talking about your favourite flower].”
*Sylus watching you with intent, beginning of a smile forming at the corners of his mouth.*
monster!sylus who, at one point, sat under a tree with you, looking over the N109 zone towards linkon when his deep voice split through the silence
“Do you like me?”
the sudden and blunt question probably shocked you - your flustered response causing him to grow confused
what was wrong with the question?
was the point of asking not to find out answers one wants to know?
he would simply sit and stare at you until you responded, no matter how long it took you he waited
monster!sylus who finally realised what it felt like to be cared for when you answered ‘yes’, the warm sensation flooding his senses, and he was utterly confused.
it wasn’t as if you’d devoted yourself to him, nor had you sworn your loyalty for life - but the idea that you liked him…
he gave you no response, looking off into the distance as he tried to process the information.
when you asked him ‘Aren’t you going to respond?’ he’s give some bullshit answer along the lines of “You haven’t asked me anything.”
he knows what you were asking.
for some reason, he can’t say anything back.
monster!sylus that slowly began to seek your presence, your company. waiting for you to show up became tiresome, he wanted to be with you.
showing up out of no where - when you were on a walk or entering your residency, he would all of a sudden appear and demand your attention (which you secretly didn’t mind giving).
each visit he’d stay longer, get a little closer, feel a little more.
you taught him how to laugh - well at least give an amused huff, how to do his hair ‘properly’ rather than having it sit erratically on his head.
moving his hair out of his eyes, you swoop it into a neat parting muttering something about not hiding his ‘pretty eyes’, arching over his lids and settling neatly.
however after looking in the mirror, he immediately ran his hand through the hair causing you to almost murder the man on the spot
you taught him how to appreciate cuisines, especially the different variants of drinks.
“This is what brand of wine? Ah… I see.”
you taught him how to treat wounds, how to cook simple foods, each visit a little date on its own.
monster!sylus who inevitably grew fond of you, watching you with a small smile no matter what you did.
if you ever pointed this out, he’d just shrug his shoulders and carry on with whatever he was doing before.
he didn’t notice at first, but you’d somehow managed to work yourself into his life - despite having tried to rid you many times before.
now, your company was second nature. for a solitary creature, he had never before had the chance to appreciate companionship.
you taught him how to.
monster!sylus who quickly learnt your interests. you loved the small, infant cats that would roam the streets - every time you’d stop at a shop, buy some food and nudge it towards the creatures.
you’d take him to ride on a horse - which he complained about being ‘too slow’ and that he could run several paces faster, so you introduced him to motorcycles.
sitting behind you, arms wrapping around your waist as you both sailed through the night air, the city lights your stars.
monster!sylus who you sat next to, head resting against his shoulder.
“Relaxing so easily against me, have you forgotten what I truly am?”
if you’re confused, he’ll spell it out for you. he’s grown used to your obliviousness after all.
a monster
a being birthed by abhorrence, the dirt and filth that humans try so desperately to conceal. no amount of flesh, skin and bone could hide that fact, no amount of blood that spills against his hands could cloak such a stench.
cruel, disgusting, selfish. malevolence was second nature.
sylus who learnt what it felt like to be unconditionally loved in your gentle embrace.
eyes widening with surprise, he’ll ask you if you’re scared of him, you say never. you say that you could never be disgusted by him.
you tell him with so much conviction it may as well have been indoctrinated in the stars.
he couldn’t help but smile at your innocence, your ability to love the unlovable.
sylus who learnt how to feel fear as he watched the wanderer pierce your body - blood spurting from your chest.
his hands are covered in blood - palms slipping against your chest as he tries to plug the hole in your chest.
the warmth of your body, your soul, gushes from you in violent pulses - sylus can feel your trembling breaths, his eyes wide with panic. he fumbles around, cursing louder and louder as he watches you fade away.
“Fuck- fuck. Hold on, keep your eyes open - I can do something about this just wait.”
sylus who watches in despair as the life drains from your eyes, feeling the sharp throb in his eye propel his evol at the wanderer that murdered you
monster!sylus who rips the wanderer’s limb by limb, ensuring that the subject experienced each and every sensation as its soul parted from the mangled corpse
no mercy was shown as he suffocated the creature to death, crushing it’s neck as it squealed.
monster!sylus who stood over a corpse. the corpse of the person who taught him love.
monster!sylus who didn’t attend your funeral.
you never taught him how to grieve, never taught him what to do when you’d leave him - damned with immortality.
monster!sylus who never got to say the words he wanted to.
he could only see you where you lay, sitting helplessly by your tombstone.
it feels as though he’s been stabbed, a burning wound ripping down his throat. he knows the answer now.
“I love you too.”
AN: not proofread as usual i had fun writing the beginning but i had no idea how to finish it - i feel like sylus and MC had a tragic end which is why he’s so forward with his love for them now that he knows he loves them and that their time together can end any moment, unlike their previous life this life he’ll make sure MC knows he’s theirs! :3

the mom/dadification of Dick really starts to be detrimental when people say things like "[insert parental figure] should've done more to properly reprimand/comfort [insert whump blorbo here]" Especially when it comes to the 2009 era with Tim's whole deal - its always "why didn't Dick 'parent' Damian better and do something for Tim???" and never actually analyzing why that whole idea is wrong. Dick isn't Tim's father and Dick isn't Damian's father. He's Tim's older brother first and foremost. Why does whenever Bruce die or do something shitty suddenly everyone shoves Dick into the Fatherhood role? He has responsibility as the adult in simple terms, yes, but at the time of Bruce's death in the 2009 Reborn era he was not Damian's family.
He was watching Damian because Damian at the time was an obstacle, like running around having to carry a bomb and watch it so it doesn't explode. He wasn't taking care of Damian because he cared about the kid (at first) and he told Tim that much before Tim decided to leave. He explicitly told Tim that he trusted him as an equal partner, not another kid he needed to watch out for. And whether that sentiment is wrong or not is your opinion, but theres something to said about Dick's own struggles with independence and how he was probably trying to give Tim a chance of independence that wouldn't end as badly as Dick and Bruce's schism did. It backfired in a sense, and honestly I feel regardless of whether Tim stayed as Robin or not things would still have ended shitty because they were both grieving and Tim is a teenager becoming an adult and they were not agreeing on the Bruce thing. (Even if Tim was never shown on panel telling Dick his actual ideas for Bruce being alive before he left).
Whatever idk. I just feel people forget Dick has his own serious issues and absolutely none of the Batman characters would be adept at therapy speak or actively acknowledging their own problems. Dick has his own shit to deal with, just as Tim has his own issues and Damian has issues. There's never going to be a correct solution to the very human conflict going on. You can't "I'm a good parent/sibling" your way out of it. Dick suddenly gaining self-sentience and deciding to punish Damian like a dad would change nothing. Honestly it'd make things worse, Damian has never responded well to parenting and I don't get why people think getting yelled at or put in baby jail would fix his deep-seated issues with the concept of mom/dad. Damian getting punished wouldn't fix anything. Tim staying Robin wouldn't fix anything because he was already set on leaving to search for clues on his theory.
#people: dick should've yelled at him or taken a privilege away or literally have shoved him in jail or something#me: ok but Damian has never once been a kid who'd listen to an adult if they did any of those things he'd probably just lash out more#people: who cares about Damian??? what about poor Tim? (who was already going to drift apart from the family regardless)#(who was clearly being set up on a teenage discovery/maturation journey already)#damian wayne#dick grayson#tim drake#dc

The ethical dilemma of permashifting
And other Shifttok shenanigans!
Despite the fact that Shifting is a centuries old practice across countries, religions, and peoples, it had gained a lot of fame through TikTok in 2020 due to the rise of Dracotok (thank you Harry Potter fandom!)
If you haven't seen that famous video of a creator coming back from an eight months shift to Hogwarts, then you have missed a big piece of Shifttok lore. However, that fame brought with it a lot of debates concerning the morality of Shifting as a practice, with people (young and old alike) declaring their own moral code as the one true religion for shifting. (sounds familiar? Bear with me.)
From the shifting police, to creators claiming their S/Os told them they would miss them once they shift back (*cough* Draco Malfoy *cough*) to people straight up lying about shifting for views, a lot of misinformation has been swimming around the Shifttok pool, threatening to drown baby shifters with it. Clones (not a thing), respawning (not what you think it is ) being kicked out of your dr... it was a mess. At one point, the majority of Shifttok has even unanimously agreed that permashifting is wrong and despicable, and you should never ever ever do it or else you're a terrible person.
What is permashifting? It is simply choosing a different reality to this one to shift to, and deciding to not shift back. That's it. That reality becomes your current reality or your original reality or whatever you want to call it, and your awareness shifts from there if it chooses to.
Your life here doesn't cease to exist. You don't die or end this version of reality and kill everyone else with you. You are simply not aware of what happens here anymore, and your current self continues to live as they were, and so does everyone else around you. No one will know you permashifted, because your soul and your consciousness are, in fact, not the same thing.
So why is everyone and their grandmother so against permashifting?
That's because, dear reader,(if you're still even here) those people are treating this reality as the end all be all to all realities. They believe this is the one true reality, and everything else is just a divergence, a self insert fanfic, or even worse, a fictional story for their own amusement. What some seem to not understand, is that all realities are equal, all planes of existence hold the same weight, and whatever reality you choose to be aware of does not determine whether you're a good or a bad person. It is simply a reality, and you are simply the awareness.
So why do we take the moral code of this reality and force it into the others? Why aren't you allowed to permashift and experience a reality where all of your dreams come to life? Why do you have to suffer in this one with a mere break here and there in your desired reality? Why can't you stay there and experience joy and happiness and love like you've never had in this one?
You can.
Permashifting is perfectly okay. You're not obligated to stay here simply because this happened to be the first reality you became aware of in this lifetime. You are allowed to experience whatever brings you joy and ease and peace and love across all realms and universes.
You don't have to limit yourself to the box this reality and its people are forcing on you. Just because you were born at a certain year here doesn't mean that's the only year you can be born in across ALL INFINITE REALITIES. Just because you are a certain race or ethnicity or gender here doesn't mean you have to be that exact same race, ethnicity, or gender across all universes. Just because you're human here doesn't mean you can't be anything else throughout time and space! And just because you were born here doesn't mean you have to stay here.
Everyone has an opinion, it doesn't mean every opinion is valid. And by all means, if you think this here (my opinion) is not valid, feel free to disregard it completely. However, know this:
You are limitless. Ageless. Bodiless. You are pure consciousness. You are the universe, and if this experience is not to your liking, you have the power to change it. Don't hold back.
Happy shifting ❤️

Hello my friend!
So we all know how amazing and wonderful Gale is, how kind, good, caring and funny he is. He is, in so many ways, a perfect man.
He is, however, only human. I have the tendency to idealise him, and forget this.
My question to you is - what do you think his flaws are? Both generally and as a husband/life partner.
💜
Ohhh I love this question so much ❤️ I am a hopeless romantic, and I adore Gale’s charming, sweet, loving adorkableness! He is truly amazing—but I can confirm NOBODY (and no relationship) is ever 100% perfect.
The thing about a long-term committed relationship is that, while your partner’s charms make the relationship wonderful, their flaws are what make it REAL. And that’s just as important.
So let’s talk about our charming Gale’s less-than-charming aspects, shall we?
[warning: this went from a short & concise answer to a rambling dissertation, please prepare yourself accordingly! Also I know this ask/answer was supposed to make Gale a little less perfect and help lessen our obsession, but uhhhh, I seem to have veered hard in the opposite direction 😂]
———
First off: The Pomposity™️ (I’m not 100% certain that’s even a real word but you know what I mean right) So we all know that by the end of the game, (human) Gale has come to accept himself as he is, and decided to henceforth be known as ‘Gale Dekarios, a most brilliant wizard of intentionally limited reknown.’ He’s come a lonnng way in cutting down his ego, but let’s be honest: some of it will never truly go away. And that’s fair, because he IS brilliant, and he IS talented, and he IS extremely passionate about magic.
…but it’s tough to remember all that and give him a pass when that usually-oh-so-adorable-finger-in-the-air is now aimed at YOU, as he declares that ‘after all, he IS an expert on [*insert topic here*] because he WAS awarded [*insert scholarly award here*] from the one and only [*insert impressive Blackstaff Academy professor here.*]’
And all you wanted was for your opinion to be taken into consideration regarding the wine selection at dinner.
———
Second: The Disarray / Messiness. Gale has a brilliant mind, one that he applies full throttle to any and all situations: concentration on magic spells, lance board strategy, calculations, poring over ancient tomes, and even figuring out how to cook something edible out of rotting fish heads and some moldy cheese (no veggies, though!)
The problem is, while his mind is brilliant and he will keep it laser-focused on his chosen subject at that current moment, from a day-to-day perspective he is straight-up scatter brained with all the things he has his hands in. We can see this in his vision of his tower: BOOKS. BOOKS EVERYWHERE. Some stacked in piles, some shoved onto shelves, some left open on the page he was reading when he got distracted, etc.
We also get confirmation of this from Tara in the epilogue:
Tara: The way he leaves his potions in absolute disarray—I know for certain he wasn’t raised in a barn, but you’d never know it.
It’s one thing to have books & potions & scrolls scattered throughout his library and sitting room—you have no complaints against that, you HAVE moved in with/married a wizard, after all—but to find them in the kitchen, wine cellar, even occasionally stuffed into your own wardrobe? It’s a bit much.
TLDR: Our rizzard is a hot mess.
———
Which leads us into perhaps his biggest flaw: The Fussiness.
So about all those books everywhere, on everything, all at once? You didn’t try and ARRANGE them or organize them for him, did you?…You did?! Oh, gods! No, no, he had an ORDER to them, you see, and he knew that the exact spell he needed could be found in the third book down in the stack next to the piano, page 453, why did you ever decide to move it?
Well, you explain as patiently as you can, it was in the way, and frankly you could tell from the dust on it that he hadn’t touched it in several yea—
BY ELMINSTER’S ELBOW, did you ALPHABETIZE his illusion scrolls??! Oh, for the love of—!
You get the picture.
There would undoubtedly be moments when you found yourself fully exasperated by this man and his exacting, fussy nature.
———
All that being said: true fights would be rare.
The occasional huffy remark or quickly-forgotten gripe would occur now and then as in any relationship, but a real, anger-filled argument? With heightened emotions and hurt feelings? Rare indeed.
The only thing bigger than Gale’s brain is his heart. And while his mind is dedicated to a great many things as mentioned above (magic studies, lance board, etc) his heart is 100% dedicated TO YOU, and you alone. So on those rare occasions after a fight has occurred, it does not take long for him to come down from the heat of the moment and realize, oh, hells, he’s been an ass, hasn’t he?
He knows you love him. His anxiety about not being enough for you has long since disappeared, and he’s calmed his worries that you would ever leave him, but still…there’s always a lingering concern that maybe you’ll grow distant from him after an argument.
If you are in the wrong and he is certain of it, he will be stiffly polite until you offer an apology, and then he will be taking you in his arms, kissing you passionately and telling you ‘all is forgiven my love, let’s never speak of this again’ (and trying hard to hide his relief that you apologized first, because he was not sure how long he would be able to hold out and stay mad at you.)
If HE is in the wrong, though? And you are truly mad at him? And he knows he really stuck his foot in it? Oh, boy.
You’ll be treated to an apology so eloquent it would make poets weep, and it will come packaged with hand-holding, pouting, pleading, and Gale getting down on his (bad) knees.
And if you’re still mad at him after that?
Well, then you’ll have to complete a gauntlet harder than anything Shar could ever throw at you. You’ll have to try and stay angry, explain your anger, AND explain to Gale why he won’t be easily forgiven, all while looking directly at this:
And this:
AND THIS:
…
…needless to say you will be failing, and hard.
Not that you mind, because the make-up sex will be absolutely phenomenal. Gale doesn’t just want to repair your loving bond after you’ve had an argument, he wants to improve it. Which requires much study and experimentation, of course.
And for awhile afterwards, all will be bliss again.
…until you find a pile of scrolls shoved under your side of the bed, and some open books scattered across your dresser, and you decide it time to do some organizing. ———
So yes, my friend. Gale definitely does have some flaws, and at some point they WOULD drive you crazy in any sort of relationship you have with him. Gale is wonderful, Gale is loving, but Gale isn’t perfect!!
…but when he takes you in his arms after you’ve made up, and his mouth is hungrily devouring yours, and he’s murmuring words of adoration against your skin as he trails his kisses down your neck, chest, hips—
Nevermind! I take it all back. He’s perfect. 😂

NSFW Alphabet for Art the Clown
A couple other people have done this already, but here's my take on it.
(18+ only)
WARNINGS: Canon-typical violence, gore, torture, one mention of n*crophilia, a teeny tiny hint at c*prophilia, you might think I'm a little insane
This is geared towards AFAB people.
As strange as it may seem, the reader character is consenting to these acts.
Whether you love or hate the Terrifier franchise, THIS POST IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. You’ve been warned.
Aftercare
There's not a whole lot of it. At the very most, Art will loosen up the restraints, if there are any. Even this, however, isn't a guarantee. He prefers to leave you in a state of "total ruin"; your scars, injuries, and extreme exhaustion get left untreated.
Body Part
His teeth allow for him to spread "joy" with his big smile, in addition with his ability to bite into your flesh. As for what is attached to you, Art favors your nose. It will absolutely be booped.
Cum
Semen will be inside you in some manner: vagina, anal, whatever new holes are created, etc. If it ends up in your mouth, then you must swallow.
Dirty Secret
There are no secrets.
Experience
Art knows the basics of giving pleasure, such as the clitoris location and how to stimulate it. It's unknown where he obtained these skills, but he definitely knows how to use them.
Favorite Position
It's when you're stripped and hung upside down with your legs spread open. He immerses himself in this sense of control, as you permit him to do whatever he wants.
Goofy
Art smiles and "laughs" as he tears you into pieces. He'll also honk his clown horn when he squeezes your tits and ass.
Hair
There's two possibilities here: his nuts are either as bald as his head, or the bush is absolutely wild. There is no in between.
Intimacy
His passion increases as the minutes pass; he immerses himself in your body and fluids.
Jack Off
Using a detached body part (head, leg, torso) as a flesh light would be Art's usual take on masturbation.
Kink
Art kinks generally revolve around a type of torture and gore; he engages in his own form of "BDSM". For instance, he'll handcuff you to the bedposts, then whip you with his cat o' nine tails. Another kink of his connects back to what he did in that pizza shop bathroom...
Location
His favorite places to fuck are within old, abandoned buildings, and especially the old carnival. He doesn't mind playing around in the laundromat either.
Motivation
Full-on clown cosplays, both sexy and unsexy, are one way to get him excited. What really gets Art going, though, is a fresh laceration. The sight of one makes him curious: how deep is it, and can he make it deeper?
NO
There may be a hint of gentleness in the beginning, but overall, Art will not go soft on you.
Oral
Blowjob sessions with him grabbing your head, forcing your mouth open, and having you deep throat his cock until you nearly pass out (and you sometimes do). When you're the one on the receiving end, Art starts out by teasing you with these long, agonizingly slow licks. Then, he'll start sucking on your clit in a rhythmic fashion, eventually inserting a couple fingers to match with the rhythm.
Pace
Art takes his time, but as previously mentioned, he'll be rough throughout; his favorite type of pain to inflict is one that's long-lasting.
Quickie
Quickie's with Art are rare. He prefers to savor his sexual urges for the perfect time and place. In his opinion, waiting enhances the experience, since he's finally able to release these bottled up emotions boiling within.
Risk
As a man of creativity, Art is always coming up with new ways to mess around. However, he leans away from submissive roles in order to avoid a scenario where you have the advantage. That principle may be thrown out the window, though, once you start referring to yourself as "mommy".
Stamina
Sessions as a whole tend to be about an hour long at least, so there will usually be just one round at a time. In terms of how long until Art ejaculates, it averages to about fifteen minutes (when you're directly stimulating his penis, of course).
Toy
You'll be faced with whatever tools and weapons Art has in his garbage bag, in addition to the recent project he's crafted on his workbench.
Unfair
There will lots of teasing from him, especially during the first ten minutes of sexy time. He loves how much it makes you beg, and also how loud you whine from denied orgasms.
Volume
Bro is obviously silent the entire time.
Wild Card
Imagine yourself hanging upside down (refer to his favorite position), blood rushing to your head as Art licks your pussy, digging his fingernails into your ass cheeks
X-Ray
It's pretty thick, reaching to around 5 or 6 inches.
Yearning
His sex drive is slightly above average, but he mostly relieves the tension through his acts of murder.
ZZZ
As I sort of stated at the beginning, he leaves you alone after sex. In other words, he doesn't fall asleep next to you. His sleep schedule is likely terrible anyway, due to how late he stays up.

Astarion is more than a pretty face.
Sooooo many thoughts on this character. One could spend hours picking apart details and cannons. So here is one of mine.
He is not a "Pretty Idiot"
I don't think Astarion is "unintelligent" at all. Some people argue that certain lines within the game suggest it, such as the mind flayer at the epilogue party saying he has a less wrinkled brain, or his epic plan to kill Cazador.
First, there is nothing that says mind flayers can see your brain through your skull. So the less wrinkled comment is an assumption based off of what the companion knows about him through interaction. And as far as the epic plan goes, there is a reason there is no detail to it. He doesn't trust his own ideas.
Walk with me.
Imagine you have spent two hundred years being told everything about you is worthless. Imagine being asked questions just be torn apart for not answering "correctly". Imagine spending so much time in fight or flight your brain defaults to Neverland just to escape your reality. Imagine having to mask specific aspects of your personality to appease others.
These are all real side effects to mental and physical abuse. And it is game fact that Astarion was seriously abused on unimaginable levels. I'm sure Cazaloser enjoyed taking every scrap of self worth Astarion had and I'm sure he beat the hell out of him with it. And if there is anything a narcissist loves to do, its make sure their victims believe they are stupid and worthless.
I think he is intelligent. He just doesn't trust himself to make the "right" decisions anymore. Not early on anyway. His disassociation probably causes him to "black out" and miss key info about situations most of the time anyway. Also, he probably has a deep fear of being blamed if something goes wrong. So he makes his opinions vague and your idea so he always has a foot out the door if he is challenged. Smart tactic. Manipulative AF, but ..smart.
I also think this because certain things change after you complete his quest and kill the * insert colorful and appropriate adjective here*.
He starts to make definite decisions. Such as choosing you without being vague or making it your idea. He's straight forward and decisive about it.
He starts giving more thoughtful opinions. Such as what he says about Dame Aylin after she feels off about killing Lorrokan. That's a complete and connective opinion. Not just. "Oh, I don't know."
He stops depreciating things he likes. He says he hates puns, but uses them quite often. And puns take a certain level of wit to pull off.
His voice drops. Ending sentences on an upward inflection appear less threatening. Like throwing a smiley face at the end of a comment you are worried will elicit a negative response from if you dont. Post kill, more of his responses end on a downward inflection. The mask is dropping. He was smart enough to realize changing his voice would help him stay safe. Hmm...
Not a pretty idiot. Just pretty complicated.
Just my opinion.

Hi! If you don't mind me asking:
What does mxtx says about jc's character? Like some jc stans claim that she has said he has a knife tounge and tofu heart, (I don't believe it still) is it true? I don't know where to find her interviews, so I asked you instead:)
Thank you 💕
MXTX speaks on Jiang Cheng’s character in two places that I know: the old version of the postscript of the novel (absent from the official 7seas release) and an interview from before she left socials.
In the postscript, she only has this to say about Jiang Cheng:
Everyone should know what Jiang Cheng’s keyword is without me saying it. In the beginning, I thought with with XY’s [Xue Yang] existence, Jiang Cheng’s negative energy would definitely seem skimpy. Who knew he became the ultimate superstar of the comment section? Compared to him, XY was almost a poor, has-been idol. Only now and then would someone decide to drag him out again. Of course, in the end, under the combined PDA attacks of WWX and LWJ, the past and present superstars were obliterated.
And in this interview, she goes more in-depth. Sidenote: while I appreciate the interview for what it, I do not appreciate the ways in which they insert their own opinions about how they think MXTX should feel about Jiang Cheng into the actual interview commentary, and it shows how much of a bias even the interviewer had towards his character to have asked so many leading questions in an attempt to get a positive response out of her about him.
Anyways, here's some expansion by @jiangwanyinscatmom on the nuance of what mxtx meant by “not heinous/evil” that was lost in translation here and some more re-translation (still of the same interview as above):
墨香铜臭:本性不是特别坏,但是有人要讨厌他的话,那也没办法。因为你讨不讨厌一个人,也是……也是自己的问题。
He is not a 坏 (basically spoiled broken, corrupt) person by nature, but if someone wants to dislike him, there is nothing I can do about it. Because whether you dislike someone or not is also... your own choice.
MXTX's answer about why Jiang Cheng never could marry and how she sees him as a character (parenthesis section for jiangwanyinscatmom's own translation notes):
墨香铜臭:就性格比较差劲吧,谈了几个,吹了。 (He just has an 差劲 (average/lame/disappointing, let down) temperament, he dated several times but they were all failures) 墨香铜臭:我眼中的江澄…… MXTX: In my eyes, Jiang Cheng... In my eyes, Jiang Cheng is... Actually, it's nothing special. I am relatively objective when writing. When I look at him... When I look at him, it's like looking at a work of art. Female host: If you were to introduce Jiang Cheng, how would you introduce him? MXTX: I think he is a person with a lot of negative energy... Female host: Is it that simple? MXTX: Yes, he has a lot of negative energy, but he is not a heinous person. Yes.
In short: MXTX describes Jiang Cheng as a character that is filled with negativity and unable to date, but he is not inherently evil nor to the point of being irredeemable. He is a product of the story and fulfills the role he was created to fulfill in the plot. He's not a good person, not overtly and not secretly. That's it.
#mxtx asks#mdzs asks#anon#from what i'm understanding: the nuance of the 'evil/heinous' is#the difference between a schoolyard bully and cecil rhodes#yeah a schoolyard bully is a terrible person and their victims will likely never want to forgive them or befriend them in this life#but that is NOT AT ALL on the same level of what cecil rhodes did#interpersonal jackassery vs. societal-level crimes against humanity#(though i think the people of yunmeng would beg to differ about jc's crimes only happening on the 'interpersonal level' but i digress)#canon jiang cheng#jiang cheng

I'm not sure if you've answered a question like this before but do you think Sebek would feel less insecure about his human-fae heritage if he became acquainted (or even friends) with someone similar at NRC? Or would he just end up projecting his own struggles onto them?
It'd be a different story if he grew up with one in Briar Valley, but I'm not caught up on the lore enough to know how common mixed fae-humans are there 😅
I don’t think it would make a significant difference.
Firstly, the impression I get is that mixed fae-humans are rare, since fae are unlikely to mingle outside of their kind (pixies and Briar Valley fae behave similarly and are suspicious of non-fae; only the Dwarves seem to be friendly with humans). The chances of Sebek being even finding someone of his kind are low. Recall too that nocturnal fae (which Sebek is descended from) have beef with diurnal fae, so even if Sebek were to run into a mixed fae like him, he might still clash with them on the basis of that difference in background.
Another point I’d like to make is that one person for like a year or so may not be “enough” to totally change Sebek’s mind. Think about it. The way you’re describing it, Sebek has still grown up in Briar Valley his entire life and comes to NRC still carrying the attitudes he grew up with and the experiences of being looked down on by full fae. One encounter at school won’t be sufficient to counteract what is basically a lifetime’s worth of isolation and self-loathing. That just isn’t how character growth works; it’s a steady thing that you have to actively work toward.
As an example, Epel does not instantly shake off his views on traditional gender roles in book 5 just because he met Vil and lived under his dorm. Exposure alone isn’t “enough”. Epel has to be challenged and shown the error of his ways, as well as actually gain a respect for Vil’s perspective and then learn to overcome his own prejudices. A similar thing happens in book 7 when Sebek is confronted by the bigotry of his grandfather, which reflects his own attitudes towards his human peers. Again, he is being challenged and forced to face these unsavory aspects of himself and sees how that shows in others. It’s a process far more complex than simply meeting and/or befriending someone like you and realizing on your own, “oh hey, maybe I was wrong”. Sebek has to put in the work to change.
Looking at Sebek’s current circle also doesn’t yield any… hopeful results? He looks up to Lilia so much yet also puts up resistance and ignores advice from him to be more kind to non-fae. Note also that Sebek, despite being friends with Silver (a full-blooded human), he still holds a bad opinion of humans in general. It didn’t make him magically not racist or more understanding of humans when so much of his socialization fell outside of that purview. If anything, Sebek just acts like Silver is “one of the good ones” rather than his friendship with Silver making him more accepting of other humans.
Finally, I don’t think just the presence or the befriending of another person like him would change Sebek by itself. It would depends a lot on what type of person that other guy is. Who knows, maybe they’re just as bigoted and agree with his thoughts. It could also result in a scenario where Sebek feels comfortable staying in his own little echo chamber and refuses to venture beyond that. In another case, Sebek could very easily warp his views to confirm the narrative that already exists in his head. He could very easily tell himself “yes, this person is fine because they, too, have fae blood in them”. (Think of how many bigots use the “but I have a [insert marginalized group here] friend so I can’t be [X]ist!” excuse to justify their own terrible stances.) There are many ways this could go wrong or perpetuate what he already believes in. Confirmation bias is a thing!

This is just an opinion.
I’m sorry, but I can’t support a protagonist like Shen Yuan if he can’t respect the body of the person he’s taken over. The transmigration trope in many of these novels often leads to the erasure of the original soul, which makes me feel sad for them. While I understand why many fans like his character, I can’t root for him anymore. There’s a sort of horror in knowing that he and the rest of the readers pushed for such a bleak ending for Shen Jiu. An omnipotent being forces him to be a scum villain, and the person who condemned him has now taken over his body, his name, and married his abuser, his torturer. Imagine how horrified he’d be to learn he’s married to his own disciple—it’s disgusting. Someone who is just like all the men in his life takes away his autonomy and the name he earned; Shen Qingqiu is literally ripped away from him.
I remember someone mentioning that Shen Jiu follows the formula of MXTX's shou protagonists, and they’re right. The only difference is that he’s not allowed to gain a second chance. When Wei Wuxian tried to save the Wens, it cost him everything, similar to how Shen Jiu’s attempt to save his martial brother set off a domino effect of tragedy.
There’s a difference between Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan. Unlike Shen Yuan, whose path is clear and predictable, Shen Jiu’s very rare but kind actions often lead to dire consequences. Each time he tries to do something good, the world retaliates harshly. That’s why I like Shen Jiu more. I don’t mind a character’s misdeeds if they reveal something profound about them. Shen Jiu’s attempts to do good, even when they backfire, show his sincerity. Shen Yuan’s choices, on the other hand, seem easy and don’t require much moral struggle.
What saddens me is that a rich, lazy millennial is thrust into the body of a traumatized orphan and somehow gets the happy ending. Even if he didn’t ask for it, there’s a moral duty to respect the original character he's inhabited now because without Shen Jiu’s body, Shen Yuan would have no purpose is that even a lie because what goals or aspirations did he even have? We truly have nilch to go off what he's like without he's online persona but frankly he's a bad person to me if he harasses an author and makes no effort to even get himself to express his emotions especially his apathy like the fuck bro what going on here bro?? How do you just not give a shit about anything besides your beloved LBG like he's cuckoo up in the head like a few bolts and screws were lost in the making of his birth.
It actually made me mad, to be honest. I wish the author had never created Shen Jiu as a character because it spoiled my enjoyment of the book that I took as fun entertainment. SVSSS was the first transmigration story I read that gave the original soul such an important role. Other stories often use these bodies as self-insert devices, but knowing Shen Jiu is an actual character made me see him differently.
I also find it unsettling that Shen Yuan has to live as another person for the rest of his life. Sometimes, silence speaks louder than words. If the author isn’t going to do an identity reveal in an MXTX story, what does that say about Shen Yuan’s relationship with everyone else and the ML included? Wouldn’t everything fall apart? Doesn't that mean something is off lol???
This omission to me kinda undermines the foundation of his relationships, especially with the main love interest. Living a lie means that Shen Yuan’s connections are based on a false premise. If those around him, including the main love interest, don’t know who he truly is, their interactions and feelings might be based on their own misconceptions. In essence, the story hinges on Shen Jiu because his life and identity are the foundation upon which Shen Yuan builds his new existence and I find SY careless and disregard of that to be unappealing for a protagonist to follow .
I can see how the System's role in "SVSSS" can be interpreted as a form of horror, especially considering the implications for Shen Jiu. Here's an expanded take on your guys idea a theory of sorts:
The System's reasoning for booting Shen Jiu out and replacing him with Shen Yuan could be seen as a chillingly calculated move. Shen Jiu’s unwillingness to follow the predetermined outline and his resistance to the System's goals could have led to his removal. The System’s primary objective seems to be the satisfaction and happiness of Luo Binghe, the protagonist. Given the tragic nature of "PIDW" (Proud Immortal Demon Way), the System might have sought a more compliant individual to ensure a more favorable outcome for Luo Binghe.
If the protagonist, Luo Binghe, obsessively desires companionship and affection from Shen Qingqiu, and the original Shen Jiu isn't reciprocating, the System might decide to alter the course of the world. This new beginning involves replacing Shen Jiu with someone who not only understands the narrative but is also deeply invested in Luo Binghe's happiness—someone like Shen Yuan. As a form of punishment for Shen Jiu’s disobedience, the System forces him to take a backseat, helplessly watching as events unfold with Shen Yuan in control of his body.
This scenario adds a layer of horror, as it portrays the System as an omnipotent force capable of rewriting lives and fates to suit its goals. Shen Jiu’s autonomy is completely stripped away, and he’s forced to witness his own life being manipulated and his identity being overridden. By replacing Shen Jiu with Shen Yuan, the System ensures that Luo Binghe’s desires are met, but at the cost of Shen Jiu’s existence.

I see so many posts over different social media platforms about sexuality/gender hcs for the strawhats and i want to add in my own two cents because i believe im very correct (but anyone’s opinion is valid so long as it doesnt go against canon coding)
Luffy - the most aroace and trans guy to ever BREATHE. i dont mean aroace in that hes somewhere on the spectrum where he can still be attracted to people, because he cant. this guy had never grasped the concept of romance and never will, because theres no reason for it to him. hes trans because i say he is, i dont have many reasons for THAT but its just the signals hes sending me. trans to trans communication trust
Zoro - gay. thats it thats the post. no but i dont ship luffy with anyone but zoro is just attracted to literally any man who is strong, thats his criteria and thats all he ever needs. is he aware of it? not at all, he has no idea that its not normal to get bricked up by the thought of other men
Nami - i havent seen a bigger lesbian in media ever, genuinely i dont think any other character is as obviously lesbian as she is. she loves girls unapologetically no matter what, supports all girls at the end of the day (cough kalifa) . i also hit her with the asexual beam because i can, specifically demisexual because i THINK so
Usopp - while i wanna consider kaya, i wanna consider sanji too and thats making me lean between bi or omni even if omni is a label under the bi umbrella. its more a question of if he recognises his preference for men or not, because he does prefer then at the end of the day. the ace beam bounces from nami to usopp because he too doesnt feel anything and doesnt think about it either
Sanji - oh my god where do i begin. maybe just the blatant queer coding of wci as a whole?? of course hes attracted to women, thats not an aspect you can remove or just toss around to being something else. he loves and respects women, but he is so QUEER. all of wci is just queer coding, its a queer story and sanji is a queer character i will die on this hill. he probably has some kind of gender issues too, what specifically? no clue, but he likes people of multiple genders and is in deep denial about it all the time he wont ever truly accept it but he can one day as a treat live with that fact
Chopper - oh hes a reindeer he cant really have a sexuality DID WE FORGET THE FACT HES HUMAN TOO ISNT THAT LIKE HIS WHOLE THING, NOT BEING A MONSTER BUT ALSO A HUMAN. HE IS BOTH? i dont have any specific labels to slap onto him, just that hes a people lover and encourager of literally everything. ace beam bounces onto him too
Robin - trans trans trans trans trans trans trans trans you will accept robin transfem into your life right here right now. she can like anyone, she has no label on it, she just likes people and cant bother with genders or anything like that. the ace beam actually skips her because if they were doing a hear me out cake she’d be the one putting all of the crazy things. freak. (lovingly)
Franky - HOW TRANS CODED IS IT NOT TO REBUILD YOUR OWN BODY TO BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF YOURSELF AND TO REBUILD YOUR LIFE IN A WAY YOU WANT, BUT GOING BACK TO WHAT YOU LOVED ABOUT YOUR OLD SELF, AND EMBRACING IT. literally, trans goals. he modified his body and went i might as well give myself top surgery and an awesome dick while im here!! sexuality wise hes a lover of everyone, but he has preferences for women (robin) but encourages all bromances (with brook)
Brook - THIS IS WHERE IM MOST PASSIONATE!!!! people can say that hes the token straight grandpa. but theyll never understand the joy of old gay brook had a romance with his captain, the joy of brook trying to subtlety let the other strawhats know he accepts them (he isnt subtle at all and everyone knows). look at brook in drag twice for no reason and tell me he isnt queer, in some way. the ace beam finally hits someone and its brook, insert skull joke here
Jinbei - very specifically old gay man who didnt really do much throughout his youth, he always knew he liked men but he never had TIME to do anything, too busy being awesome and a father i fear. now that hes with the crew he isnt automatically gonna seek anyone out, but hes also not gonna restrain himself from finding interests in people, hes being more selfish now and thats good for him. finally the ace beam hits jinbei and proceeds to fly off towards other op characters that i might talk about some other time
can you tell im asexual and love projecting onto characters with it !!!!

Something something professional artist jargon something something insert art knowledge here—whatever I want to talk about the book covers
So you’ve got Eragon, with a 3/4 portrait of Saphira; she’s giving a benevolent side eye with almost a Mona Lisa smile, she’s got that gleam in her eye, she’s looking at you but not head on—listen, this was the whole reason I picked up the book in the first place when I was eleven, she was so clearly full of life and personality and I just really wanted to meet her. It’s a really good glimpse of her character before even opening the book. She’s engaging you, but also maybe judging you a little bit, and she has a lot of thoughts but she’s going to keep them to herself for right now, thank you.
We’re skipping Eldest for right now because I have a point to make. Shush.
For Brisingr, we get a perfect side portrait of Glaedr, the grumpy old man. He’s not even side-eyeing the viewer like Saphira does; he is eyes forward, goal-oriented, noble and regal and, unless you’re worth his time, not really going to bother with you because he has Important Business to attend to. He is The Last of the pre-Fall dragons, his Rider is The Last of the pre-Fall Riders, he represents a bygone era that will never fully be resurrected, but can still inspire the present to fight for the future; he is no longer fully his own dragon, but a Relic, a Memory, a Symbol. He’s not anxious about it the way Eragon or Saphira might be; he has grieved for a century, he couldn’t be anxious about it if he tried. But he knows that keeping his integrity intact is important, and so this is how he presents himself: Noble. Regal. The Survivor. The Last.
Fírnen graces the cover of Inheritance, bookending the original series by almost perfectly mirroring Saphira—and seriously, it is so satisfying to line the books up with these two at the ends. Though he’s got a 3/4 profile like Saphira, Fírnen is much more reserved. No Mona Lisa smile, no mischievous gleam in his eye; he simply looks at you, and you look back, and you wonder what he’s thinking. He is, in fact, a lot like Arya—anyone who’s read the previous three books up to that point and hasn’t been spoiled for the ending might be able to guess, just from this portrait, who the final egg would hatch for. It’s also a perfect expression for the Final Book, with the fate of Alagaësia and the dragons hanging in the balance: what world does this mysterious dragon emerge into? A war-torn apocalypse? A hard-won victory? What does his future entail, and thus, what do the futures of our favorite characters entail? You ask him so many questions, but all he will ever do is stare deep into your soul with his somber, too-knowing gaze.
And now for the main event:
My beautiful precious son, the red-scaled Thorn, staring you down from the covers of both Eldest and Murtagh. I have loved the cover of the second book ever since I first picked it up, and my appreciation has only grown with time; needless to say I was very excited when the Murtagh cover dropped, and I got to see both of my favorite characters in one place. For both of these, Thorn takes the same stance: a full-frontal combative position, looking You, The Viewer directly in the eye, daring you to judge him, daring you to get in his way. I’ve always had my own opinions about what lay behind this show of force, and the context we get in Murtagh does not disappoint. He may be terrifying, he may be the scourge of the war, but underneath all that, Thorn is terrified. He’s traumatized, he’s claustrophobic, his body is too big for his age; he is painfully young still, and yet treated like a dragon ten times his age because that’s how he looks. He’s also sweet, and playful, and cares so much about his Rider, and wants desperately to keep Murtagh safe and happy. Just like Murtagh, he hides all of that—the fear and the softness both—behind a visage of ferocity, playing into the fears and preconceived notions people have of him, warning enemies away so they can’t get too close to what will actually hurt him. He dares you to try. He’s terrified you will try. He will fight tooth and nail if you do try.
#why does tumblr keep tagging this post as mature when i hadn’t even posted it yet???#IM not labeling it mature what is going on#is saphira too sultry or something#murtagh spoilers#anyway yeah i just wanted an excuse to talk about thorn’s character in the book covers#i love him okay#i may disagree with john jude palencar about what a dragon looks like#but i CANNOT deny he is extremely good at giving dragons personality#at some point i may to shruikan and vermund also i just mostly wanted to yell about thorn#there's definitely parallels to be drawn between shruikan and thorn but also vermund and glaedr#...sigh. yeah i guess i'll be doing them at some point in the future#inheritance cycle#christopher paolini#murtagh (inheritance cycle)#thorn (inheritance cycle)#saphira bjartskular#glaedr (inheritance cycle)#fírnen (inheritance cycle)

I'm radfem adjacent, and primarily consume "whump" for a lot of the reasons already detailed here. For me personally I find a lot of catharsis in this kind of content, but I admit a large part of it is probably my brain being rotted by fanfiction.
A lot of it is self fulfilling prophecy. It's simply way too difficult for me to see a woman character being hurt or tortured, and seeing a man under the same situation is in both parts a kind of revenge or catharsis for my own suffering. And if I desire to see this dynamic, there are truckloads of fanfiction and doujin about this specific topic, sometimes even with a happy ending. Someone else proposed that seeing your favorite character that vulnerable is appealing, which I think holds true for me as well. I think so many women are primarily drawn to gay male fiction because of internalized misogyny, but primarily in the sense it is difficult to see oneself in a sexual fantasy. Projecting or inserting myself into a female character requires so much internal observation of the self. It completely changes the dynamic in my mind, so it is so much easier to just insert a male character that I can project onto as the victim. With a female character I'm asking myself all these questions. Am I as attractive as her? Would the character I'm interacting with in this scenario ever be attracted to me? Would the sexual fantasy proceed in the same way if the other character perceived me as female? It is too painful to think about these things, so I just default to a comfortable impossible yaoi fantasy.
I find female fandom space fascinating, because it is the only part of the internet men have never had any interest in colonizing. So it's an almost clear mirror of how women feel in a hypersexualized society. There are certainly women who sexualize real gay men, but a fictional man is not a man. A fictional gay man is not a gay man. Lines on a screen will always be a projection. As long as women exist in a society where they are told constantly they could be raped, when all real life porn is men getting off to random women being raped, a lot of women will naturally turn that fear into a fantasy that can take the edge off of this constant, looming fear.
Very interesting. You touched on a sentiment I’ve had for a long time, which is that male characters get to be viewed as human first and male second, but female characters are viewed as female first and human second. For example, when a male character is emotional and vulnerable, it’s viewed as a consequence of his individual self. But when a female character is emotional and vulnerable, it’s viewed only as a consequence of her being female. I can definitely understand the feeling that envisioning yourself as a male character is much easier and requires less self-awareness or internal observation.
Honestly, it’s fascinating that you’re interested in the victimization of male characters, at least partly, as vicarious revenge for misogyny. It almost comes across as though you hate these male characters. However, as I mention here, most women in these communities are extremely vocal about loving, caring for, and adoring the male characters whose anguish they romanticize.
Overall, I’m learning that the radical feminist community has very differing opinions on this matter. You and many others have expressed the opinion that whump consumers are interested in male victims because female victims are too real and horrifying to read about. However, myself and others are of the opposite opinion, which is that whump consumers are interested in male victims because there is a lack of compassion for female victims—meaning, female anguish is only recognized for the horrifying tragedy that it is when imposed onto a male character.
@misandry-is-justified articulated this view nicely: “when a woman is victimized its to titillate the (male) audience, but when a man is victimized it is treated rightfully as a horrific and traumatizing incident […] this is why whump so often uses a male victim, because only then is trauma and violence treated as it should and only then is the victim truly treated as a victim.”
