A minor detail I really like is Arcane showing how Piltover selectively restricted Zaun's access to technology, specifically weapons.
As early as the prologue of season 1, it's established that firearm technology exists in the setting when we see Piltovan Enforcers gun down the Zaunite revolutionaries, but Zaunites primarily fight with fists, knives, or the occasional Molotov cocktail. In 1x05 "Everybody Wants to be My Enemy," Sevika is completely blindsided when Caitlyn snipes at her with a rifle, forcing her to retreat from a fight she'd otherwise won, and in 1x06 "When These Walls Come Tumbling Down" both Huck and the Apothecary are visibly shocked when Caitlyn barters her standard-issue rifle for medicine, implying such weapons are still incredibly rare even on the black markets of Zaun. Even when Zaunites do get their hands on guns, they generally lack the experience to use them to the fullest extent (Silco and Sevika both use firearms in 1x09 and 2x02, respectively, but neither are very good shots).
An exception to this is Jinx, who is an excellent shot, but it's telling that Piltover controls gun access so tightly in Zaun that it took the most powerful man in the Undercity to smuggle in even one pistol for his daughter. (And that Silco's indulgence of Jinx allowed her the time and practice to transfer Powder's skill with a paintball gun to actual marksmanship).
In contrast, it's also interesting to see what technology Zaun has developed in spite of and because of Piltover.
The Undercity's greatest (un)natural resource is chemical runoff, ignored by Piltover but rendered into a variety of drugs in Zaun, and while they lack experience with firearms, Zaunites do seem to have above-average experience with explosives, perhaps due to the demolitions knowledge needed for laboring in Piltover's mines. Additionally, necessity being the mother of invention, disability is so common among Zaunites that they've developed prosthetics and other aids that exceed Piltover and even modern technology.
Piltover claims Hextech will bring a union of technology and magic into the lives of all their citizens, but when pitching Hextech for the Undercity, Jayce can only say that "the mining colonies in the fissures can work faster and without fatigue," i.e. producing more and more wealth for Piltover at their own expense.
But Zaunites are innovative and resourceful with the technology Piltover, intentionally or not, permits them, and when the spark struck tinder Zaun was only too happy to show Piltover what they could do.

What is the M1 Garand of the rig world? The staple of any serious collection, the one that anyone even loosely interested in has heard of?
Rigs are closer to cars than guns. Firearms do still exist.
But, going by the M1 Garand, that would be the most iconic rig from your grandparents generation. A significant innovation, with some quirks that are remembered fondly.
Probably a really well restored and maintained Atlas A2. Just a really sturdy, easily mass-produceable plate frame. It's not a combat rig per se, but it's what all the support crew in a military camp would wear.
For the time, they were cutting edge. Innovations in materials and power sources made them cheap to produce and fuel. They have these massive tungsten alloy hydraulics, and a thorium cell battery that glows faintly blue if you leave the casing open. When they're modded for street racing, it was the fashion to widen the casing gaps, so everyone can see how hard your cell is working.
By modern standards they're horribly inefficient and over-engineered. They kinda feel like strapping a bunch of cast iron to your body, and they eat through modern battery technology really fast, but they're the kind of rig you can fix by wacking it with a mallet a few times.
Nowadays, Atlas Armory makes pretty standard work rigs.

Hi has anyone ever told you Ice Storm Over Kosa has impeccable vibes and feels incredibly innovative and fresh!
In terms of the towns and communities, what types of infrastructure connects them? What kinds of technologies are common vs cutting edge in the setting’s different time periods?
hehe thank you.. i really like how the setting tag is just one of the character's names so it looks like you're saying He has impeccable vibes
<3
So there is a huge huge almost insurmountable limiting factor when it comes to the growth of towns and communities, which is that large aggregations of living creatures will attract the crawly beasts and they pollute the earth, make crops wither and die away, kill livestock, kill people, etc, and humans can't even touch them with protective gloves on since the crawlers' fluids eat through leather
humanity (and monsters) were forced to spread out over a larger surface area. villages and settlements are small and have to be actively defended almost nightly. there has been a slight stagnation of the march of progress, as just fighting off this threat takes up so much of everyone's resources, and forbids institutes of learning and the like from forming. so most of the technological advancements we see, they are in the field of long-range communication, weaponry (falconry too), and material technology that might repel crawling beasts
in prehistory, the land now called "the Ama plains" hosted a gigantic city with a hundred thousand people living in it, called Amphora. it was very advanced for its time period, with working plumbing, hot and cold water even, mass production of cloth and food, etc (not to mention the magic). Amphora no longer exists and most of its innovations were lost.
in the early time period after the arrival of the crawling beasts, humanity and monsterkind are scattered. the only established settlements are those guarded by wyrms, but it took many centuries to reach that point. human towns are ruled by small feudal lords who may form loose alliances with one another but typically rule their land as if it's a lone island in the middle of a vast sea. this is the time of Revelation's march. the most established settlement is the city of Onozar in the far west of Ama, which is ruled by a king who has a hold over many of the neighbouring towns and lords, by virtue of Onozar's size and relative safety. technology levels are low; no firearms, trebuchets and crossbows are cutting edge.
in the time of Twist and Flicker, there is an age of unprecedented cooperation with monsters (Revelation's march might have had something to do with this change). This means that towns and villages are now usually protected by something other than a wyrm - this ranges from willing cooperation to cruel self-styled 'monster tamers' who force monsters to do their bidding. This is the dawning age of harpy falconry as described in the lil story i wrote about Ice Storm of Kosa himself, though back then the old method was to make a contract with an adult harpy and cooperate that way. The infrastructure is still not very advanced; they're still struggling with plumbing and sewage systems, because crawlies come out of the ground and their poison can seep into aquifers. Anyway communication between towns is usually done by pigeon (or pigeon harpy). The ground is not a safe place to be, so houses are typically built on short stilts, or at the very least, residential rooms are upstairs. Water supply is often provided by elevated aqueducts; wells are a last resort, but often the only choice for impoverished villages. There is a culture of fear surrounding large gatherings and groups - sometimes it's unavoidable, and human/monster nature, but that anxiety is always there.
With this increased cooperation between humans and monsters, people are able to gather in larger groups. this enables more learning, more apprenticeships, more farmlands, and a more rapid development of technology. It also means a more centralised ruling system begins to form; it takes a lot of resources to supply a pack of wolfmen or a harpy flock to defend a town, so small towns must make petitions to their more prosperous neighbours, and this develops into a Government of the entire region. firearms develop in this time as a means to kill crawling beasts; they are not that successful, and it takes a while before people realise you can use firearms to kill other things, too.
A century later, developments are progressing well enough. Firearms are still rare but starting to spread. Harpy falconers have developed a new, effective technique for their art, it's called "kidnapping"; steal an egg, and raise the chick to imprint on its human parents. that way it won't want to leave. There is a sense of teetering on an edge; humanity leaning more into forcing monsters to help, instead of cooperating. But this is not the progression; the success of the Kosa flock helps convince many falconers that the kidnapping method isn't the best after all. technology is still uh bad, but this is an era where writing materials are finally becoming more mainstream, literacy rates are slowly rising. the printing press is the hot new thing. they have water towers now to provide the plumbing at a safe elevation. communication between villages is still very dove-based, since flight is the safest method of travel.
fire is the only thing that both kills and neutralises the poison of a crawling beast. by this time, progress has been made to develop "automatic fire machines". so all the R&D people put into guns in the real world was put into flamethrowers instead. it's easy enough to rig up a system that pumps out burning oil, but these devices are usually stationary, heavy, and fixed at the gates of the various more prosperous town walls.
#i realised that using time periods like '1700s' or '1800s' doesn't really make sense here.. i'll need to name the ages properly#ice storm over kosa#idk how well i answered the question. i have a lot more to think about especially the cultural hangups that would have developed#and also how war itself would have changed#I FORGOT TO HIT PUBLISH. THIS IS THE POST WITH THE STORY LINK

Dethklok texting headcanons!
Nathan: has caps lock on all the time. he basically always growls when he speaks normally so he wants to have the same effect over texts. probably signs his name after most texts.
(example: HEY CHARLES WE ARE OUT OF CHIPS. CAN WE GET LIKE FIFTY BAGS OF DORITOS? THANKS -NATHAN)
Toki: spells things wrong a lot. the others aren’t sure if it’s like meme speak or if he just doesn’t know how to spell. it’s a combo of both. likes emojis and memes
(example to the group chat: woulds you stills likes me if i was a worms? 🥺
Swkisgaar: i don’ts like you now
Toki: ☹️)
Skwisgaar: one word answers. ya, ok, no. that’s it. doesn’t like texting. not even sexting.
Pickles: memeing it up with Toki. doesn’t send words often. just sends the guys tiktoks and weird memes. likes sending pics of weird t shirts. spells things wrong because he’s drunk)
(example: Pickles: Tokiiii i woyld stll leik you if you was a werm
Toki: 🥹
Swkisgaar: gets off the group chats… go be homoesketuals in private)
Murderface: writes whole ass paragraphs. sometimes it’s like a 5 page essay. it’s always something that no one else cares about and he just infodumps in the group chat.
(example: Murderface: The Civil War is often referred as one of the first "modern" wars in history as it included the most advanced technology and innovations of warfare available at the time. Some of the advances and innovations of the Civil War included mass production of war materiel, rifling of gun barrels and the use of the Minié ball, the advent of repeating firearms and metallic cartridges, transportation railroads with armed locomotives, ironclad warships, submarines, one of the first uses of air corps for aerial reconnaissance, communication (especially the telegraph), advances in medicine and the gradual decline of tactics from previous centuries.
Nathan: SHUT UP MURDERFACE)

gremlin species info.
one of many monster populations that have come to live, grow, and thrive on the island of port obello are the gremlins, a cousin species to goblins ( with some families sharing ancestors and considering themselves kin ). known for their affinity for causing mischief and malfunction, gremlins were instrumental in ending the worldwide conflict known as the ' food war ', in which the various arcane culinary arts used to end an era of intense famine faced off in an all out brawl that destroyed nations and even tore several land masses apart. thanks to their keen sense of identifying the weakness in any given piece of technology or weaponry, they acted as saboteurs for hire, infiltrating enemy lines and disassembling their defenses from within.
once the war was officially ended, those that had offered their services without particular loyalty to any specific country found themselves displaced, with a reputation for causing trouble wherever they went. port obello, established by several great international heroes such as the sacchettis of italy, offered a new home to them.
while their reputation for troublemaking is certainly well - earned, gremlins are innovators, inventors, deconstructing whatever discipline captures their interest and recreating it for their own purposes. they are durable and adaptable, able to live in almost any environment and live off any type of sustenance no matter its toxicity. they cannot be poisoned, and the effects of sedatives and painkillers are greatly reduced due to their high tolerance levels.
due to their small stature and animalistic features such as tails and fur, they are sometimes mistaken for rodents. this is a misconception they've come to embrace over time, their malleable forms capable of shifting from its default state to two alternative forms, dubbed " mischief mode " and " mayhem mode ".
their mischief form is small, almost indistinguishable from that of an ordinary animal were it not for their abnormal coloration and unusual size as compared to other animals of the same species. this shape is used to move quickly and stealthily, and was especially useful during their missions in the food war. they default to this shape in a low energy or heavily wounded state, conserving precious energy to recover from harm.
their mayhem form is much like their regular form, but slightly bigger, with more lethal teeth and claws. they can withstand more damage in this form, easily taking blasts from a firearm or from explosions without relenting in their attack. this shape takes a great deal of energy to maintain, and its prolonged use either concludes with the gremlin's death or by them reverting to their mischief shape for a long period of time.
gremlins typically live in sizeable colonies, several families cooperating with one another and sharing resources. the gremlin colony on port obello lives in its own section of the town, somewhat small by comparison to other colonies the world over but deeply integrated into the local economy. they often act as repair workers, repurposing old wartime machinery into more modern and practical uses, such as farming equipment.
the most notable figure to have come from the gremlin colony on port obello was theodore " the noise " noise, former mascot of the dominion pizza empire before it went out of business. he enjoyed huge success early on in his career, but once dominion went under, he seemed to entirely vanish from the public eye. he's only recently made a return to the spotlight, and seems to be enjoying the creative freedom of having his own show.
#;out for delivery [ ooc ]#;quatro stagioni [ headcanon ]#( trying to jot out my worldbuilding hcs instead of just. having them in my brain#starting with one of my favorite pt species: gremlins!#gremlins are a more modern folklore creation#so i pulled influence from a few different places to create my own vision of them )

Full headcanon:
Yharnam’s history with firearms technology was complicated. In the past they created and designed proto-rifles and pistols which were centuries ahead of their time, thanks to the use of quicksilver. Quicksilver itself was not only flammable, but the tenuous grasp of physics in Yharnam, no doubt because of the Great One’s influence, meant it could be molded into ammunition rather easily. Very few variants were ever developed because of this however, and aside from the automated turrets made by the Old Hunters, innovation simply stagnated out of complacency. Why create a new kind of rifle or a stronger type of ammunition when the tried-and-true blunderbuss works just fine? The only innovations ever designed were by Cainhurst, but they were never adopted by the populace at large.
It's tragic that Yharnam failed to capitalize on this, as it would have saved so many from the Beast Plague. The Hunters insistence on using melee weaponry only served to help spread the disease, as it was Bloodborne by nature. Firearms could’ve not only kept many Hunters alive, but also kept them from contracting the illness and feeding the cycle of madness and beasthood… Alas, perhaps the addictive nature of the hunt made such solutions unpalatable…

// it's a day that ends in y so I'm going to complain about reincarnation isekai again
I really hate how so many of them go with the 'let's introduce modern technology in a medieval setting' because it ignores how many things have to exist first in order for you to actually be able to do things. Like, firearms require you to both have the knowledge and resources to forge metal in a modern casting system. Which requires things like a blast furnace. Which most people simply do not know how to do.
Like, the whole thing falls apart if you're going for 'normal person gets power' if they also somehow have encyclopedic knowledge of advanced technological marvels.
Like, if you want to build a steam engine, you need to know how to make a steam boiler, you need to know how to cast the metals to make it strong enough not to explode, you need to know how to make rails that are strong enough not to warp, you need to know a billion other things. What we see as one technology took decades of innovation and experimentation.
And all of it requires tons of expertise!
This is the opposite problem of 'oh the world ended and now everyone is medieval' because in that case books exist, and people can re-learn things so long as the knowledge is still physically there. In this case, the knowledge doesn't exist, but somehow the main characters know things that require the smartest minds on the planet to know.
Like on the most basic level, just knowing how to forge the barrel of a gun so that it doesn't explode from the pressure of the blast when fired is a master level skill!
Just immediately pisses me off when people just throw things in there with no grasp of how this sort of thing might be hard to do!
And really, it's more that I dislike stories where there is no challenge or conflict; something like trying to replicate an advanced technology should be an entire arc not a casual plot point.

BILLY
Drop some gun facts on me because I could show you some Red Dead Redemption guns on Discord.
GUN FACTS GUN FACTS GUN FACTS !!!
[Also tagging @alkivm and @smashlovesscream because I saw your asks as I was writing this!! <3]
I’m gonna be telling you about THREE KF MY FAVOURITE GUNS. BE READY. I TALK ALOT.
•The FAMAS
-The FAMAS is also known as the “Fusil dAssaut de la Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne’ which translates to “Assault rifle from the Saint-Étienne Arms Manufacture" I believe-
-It’s a French gun, given by the name. It’s actually a French bull pup assault rifle. One way to tell it’s a bullpup is by the magazine being located behind the trigger!!
-it was developed in the LATE 1960s and was entered in the French military around 1978 I believe.
-THE CALIBER AHHHHH. It’s a 5.56x45mm NATO. Which is the basic caliber for most modern military rifles
- So fun fact about this! It’s a selective fire rifle. MEANING. It could fire in semi auto or full auto
-I believe it was also featured in a Solid Snake game- it had nothing to do with the lore but due to the FAMAS being kinda Bulky, it was easy to put into the game at the time [I don’t remember the game but it was pretty old.]
• The P90
-The FN P90, often referred to simply as the "P90," is a compact submachine gun designed and manufactured by the Belgian firearms company FN Herstal!!
-CALIBER. The Caliber is a 5.7x28mm. It has low recoil but good penetration capabilities.
-the P90 Is another BULLPUP. I like bullpups- anyways. Like I said, the magazine is behind the trigger which helps for a shorter overall length while maintaining a longer barrel, which can improve accuracy and muzzle velocity.
-It's also another selective firing, so it could so semi or full auto and I find it so AMAZING
-IT CAN ALSO BE configured for left-handed use, thanks to its ambidextrous design. The P90 features controls and features that accommodate both left-handed and right-handed shooters. AHHHHHH.
-The Iron sights on a P90 are so deliciously beautiful. I just. I love.
• The Winchester 1873 Lever Action Rifle
-So this was introduced in 1983, given by the name, and was instantly a success due to its innovative design, versatility, and reliability. It was designed by John Browning, who would later become one of the most influential firearm designers in history!! AAAHHH!!
-The rifle was originally chambered for the .44-40 Winchester cartridge, which was a popular and versatile round that could be used for both rifles and handguns- although, later it was changed. sighs
-The 1873 was equipped with a rear ladder-style sight, which was adjustable for elevation gdhjkfgdsfjgdsfdsh
-So!! Its often associated with the American frontier and is deeply rooted in the history of the Wild West. Its introduction marked a significant advancement in firearms technology dhfhfkhf
YOU GUYS PROBABLY DONT KNOW A SINGLE THING I SAID BUT I PROMISE IT'S INTERESTING FDHJFGFKFHJFG
I LOVE GUNS AHHHHHHHHH
#guntism#its real#fantasylandbitch#SEEEE#I KNOW STUFF#I know more about how a gun works than relationships#is that sad? maybe#AHHHHHH#FGJHGRKYUEFGREY#thank you guys#I needed to let that ouy

Volume One: Chapter One: Scene Seven
While the academy’s trainee gym provides fairly basic, typical equipment that the Zeyorians and humans have shared for many years with few advancements and changes over sleeker designs, high-quality materials, and the introduction of more informative interfaces and digitalized calculations, the location that follows is lined wall to wall with a multitude of the most excellent and brilliantly innovative weaponry the Zeyorian-Human alliance can effectively design combining both their unique advancements and resources. Pistols, rifles, semi-automatic and fully automatic firearms, some that fire the classic material shells, some that fire pure blazing plasma.
The long hallway displays a wide variety of tools of modern destruction, with brutally efficient engineering, that eerily glow and gleam in the otherwise dim lighting. The floor, walls, and ceiling are all coarse metal panels that make dull clunking sounds with every step of the cadets’ boots, and due to the slightly more narrow pathway, they condense closer together and proceed with more order. Above head dim cold lamps are spaced distantly from one another, capturing mostly the swirling dust in the atmosphere. Surveying every visible inch of the armory in all of its luminescent segments, textured detailings, and intricate gadgetry, Calvin’s previously drained face now alights with fascination.
The impulse to lift the ample supply of devices from their rests and study them closely, deconstruct and reconstruct thoroughly to discover all of their implements and functional mechanics, is not only a loud thought present in Calvin’s mind but a siren’s song. Each weapon perhaps, may only yield minor education to his already surplus grasp of technology, but the abundance of different options might offer a fair amount of learning material, especially given the opportunity to compare them to each other.
Alternatively, Melody recognizes the instruments of other soldier’s fearsome battles, and feels at once, the surging potency of their intended assaults, and the wariness of the resulting mortality each will inevitably produce. Decidedly, she hastens to locate her implement of choice, a single, silver, minimalistic, plasma-firing pistol. Though an armament of devastation, such as all the rest, its familiarity is in some way, comforting. Melody lets out a strange sigh of relief as her fingertips feel along its cold rectangular edges, while Calvin passes all available options, only assessing them visually. Filing out with steeled anticipation, the geared students preface themselves in silence, some even withholding the last breath drawn into their lungs.
