Idk. Maybe my tolerance for fiction is much less as an adult? idk.

The worst kind of stories are 'and then' stories. Take a story, explain it, if you keep going 'and then' over and over, it's a shit story, because then things are just happening and have no relation to each other. In comparison, you want 'but then' or 'however' stories. Example: the heroes of middle earth want to save minas tirith but then find that there aren't enough people, so they go to try and recruit the undead army, however the army refuses them, but then they reveal that the sword that binds them was reforged to gain their allegiance.'

The worst isekai stories are all 'and then' stories; x does this and then gets this and then does that and then goes here and then does this' it's just dictating events to a reader.

And this creates a problem for me. Because no matter how interesting a *concept* is, if it fails the next steps, it's not a good story, you know?

And a big part of this is conflict, because I can never really figure out how to write or come up with conflicts for stories. For me, it's hard because I am personally not filled with a lot of desire. People say 'write what you know' but writing an emotionally stunted, disinterested, cynical misanthrope is not good for storytelling. No one wants to read someone whose story doesn't work because they refuse to go along with it. Everyone who writes that character has the same story; either they are forced to do it or they realize that they're the problem and should change and both are boring to me.

I also think that my problem is that I'm shit at worldbuilding and I'm not very good at managing characters. I'm so wedded to chekov's gun that I do not know how to deal with adding characters or how to deal with them. Idk. I'm very much a 'the scope is too big' or 'this is to repetitive.'

The core problem with any story that doesn't jump ahead with power ups is that it's not interesting to watch them have to grow. No one wants to see that. Sorta like no one wants a relationship's up and downs, they just want the *moments* in between, which is why 'the kiss' is a trope that persists, and people post gifs of all the time.

idk. I just feel like my abilities as a critic, to see the problems with stories, makes it impossible for me to do anything.

I am infinitely stopped from writing because I go 'okay and then what' and I'm left with a blank, because if I'm already bored then it's not worth writing it in the first place and not worth spending time on.
