This Thursday, Lithuania celebrates Freedom Day - 30 years ago, the last units of the occupying Soviet army were withdrawn from the country. On this occasion, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė said that Lithuania had gone through a difficult and painful path to independence.
Tumblr media
"No aggressor has the right to veto the self-determination of free people, no regime can stifle the desire to create their own future, even if it is done with the use of weapons and violence - cruel and physical or silent and prolonged, inspiring fear, destroying faith and trust. In the long run, this is doomed to failure because the will to resist evil is something that can not be disarmed or taken away," the head of government is quoted in the message.
The prime minister also notes that in 30 years Lithuania has become a member of the most important unions, and she believes that the day will come when Ukraine, which is now fighting the occupier, will join them.
Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen said that exactly 30 years ago, the last Soviet tarpaulin boot left Lithuania only thanks to the decisive will of the country's citizens and the strength of diplomacy. “For 30 years, we have been building our state the way the free people wanted it. We have become much stronger than when heavy Soviet weapons and columns of invaders moved along the streets of our cities outside Lithuania."
"Now we are making the history of a free state and do not give anyone the opportunity to doubt it. And this year's Freedom Day slogan is "Red Army Go Home!" We are also chanting for the victory of Ukraine!” - V. Čmilytė-Nielsen congratulated Ukrainians.

Lithuania’s opposition Social Democratic Party won parliamentary elections on Sunday, pushing out Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and her incumbent Homeland Union — Lithuanian Christian Democrats.
“The results are great,” Social Democrats (LSDP) leader Vilija Blinkevičiūtė told reporters at the party’s election night headquarters. “It showed that people want change.”
However, Mažvydas Jastramskis, associate professor at the Vilnius University Institute of International Relations and Political Science, said it was hard to identify what will really change from rule by the Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) in an election-night interview with LRT television.
For instance, Lithuania will maintain its hardline approach toward Russia and will keep its pro-Western foreign policy, with LDSP having vocally supported increasing the defense budget.
Blinkevičiūtė, a member of the European Parliament, is hoping to form a coalition with the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania” (DSVL) and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS), she told reporters.
However, while she had said earlier she would quit as an MEP to take up the job of prime minister, on Sunday she didn’t give a clear answer to reporters who asked her to confirm that plan. DSVL leader Saulius Skvernelis, however, said he was “100 percent” sure Blinkevičiūtė would take the prime minister’s role.
The polls closed at 8 p.m. Vilnius time, counting votes from 63 constituencies that had no clear winner after the first round of parliamentary elections Oct. 13.
Official results had LDSP securing 52 seats out of 141, while TS-LKD got 28 seats. The nationalist-populist Dawn of Nemunas won 20 seats while the DVSL took 14, the Liberal Movement got 12 and LVŽS 8.
Some 78 parliamentarians were elected during the first round, with the Social Democrats prevailing.
The 141 seats in the Seimas, Lithuania’s parliament, are awarded through both party lists (70 seats) and direct representation (71 seats).

VILNIUS, Lithuania — A DHL cargo plane crashed on approach to an airport in Lithuania’s capital and skidded into a house Monday morning, killing a Spanish crew member but not harming anyone on the ground. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
A surveillance video showed the plane descending normally as it approached the airport before sunrise, and then exploding into a huge ball of fire behind a building. The moment of impact could not be seen in the video.
The crash occurred at a time that Western security officials suspect that Russian intelligence is carrying out sabotage against their nations in retaliation for their support for Ukraine — including arson attacks, disinformation and by putting incendiary devices in packages on cargo planes.
In July one caught fire at a courier hub in Germany and another ignited in a warehouse in England.
Polish prosecutors said last month that parcels with camouflaged explosives were sent via cargo companies to EU countries and Britain to “test the transfer channel for such parcels” that were ultimately destined for the U.S. and Canada.
Lithuanian officials acknowledged that one line of inquiry will be whether Russia played a role given its suspected involvement in other cases of sabotage — although they stressed that there is no evidence pointing to that yet.
“Without a doubt, we cannot rule out the terrorism version,” said Darius Jauniškis, chief of Lithuanian intelligence.
“We see Russia becoming more aggressive,” he said. “But for now, we really cannot make any attributions or point fingers at anyone, because there is no information about it.”
The Lithuanian airport authority identified the aircraft as a DHL cargo plane arriving from Leipzig, Germany, a major freight hub, and one of the injured was a German citizen.
The German transportation ministry said that experts from the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation would be sent to Lithuania to help with the investigation. Officials there also cautioned against trying to draw conclusions before all the evidence has been examined.
“No statements can yet be made about the cause of the accident. Whether it was an accident or whether another cause led to the crash of the cargo plane is the subject of the current investigation,” German Interior Ministry spokesperson Mehmet Atta said at a briefing in Berlin.
The head of Lithuania’s firefighting service said that the plane skidded a few hundred meters (yards), and photos showed smoke rising from a damaged structure in an area of barren trees.
“Thankfully, despite the crash occurring in a residential area, no lives have been lost among the local population,” Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė said after meeting with rescue officials.
Rescue workers sealed off the area, and fragments of the plane in DHL’s trademark yellow could be seen amid wreckage scattered across the crash site.
The cargo aircraft was carrying four people when it crashed at 5:30 a.m. local time. One person, a Spanish citizen, was declared dead and the other three crew members — who were Spanish, German and Lithuanian citizens — were injured, said Ramūnas Matonis, the head of communications for Lithuanian police, in an email.
The DHL aircraft was operated by Swiftair, a Madrid-based contractor. DHL said in an emailed comment that the plane “made a forced landing” about a kilometer (half a miles) from the Vilnius airport, adding: “The cause of the accident is still unknown and an investigation is already underway.” Swiftair did not comment.
“Residential infrastructure around the house was on fire, and the house was slightly damaged, but we managed to evacuate people,” said Renatas Požėla, chief of the Fire and Rescue Department.
One eyewitness, who gave her name only as Svaja, ran to a window when a light as bright as a red sun filled her room and she heard an explosion, followed by flashes and black smoke.
“I saw a fireball,” she said. “My first thought is that a world (war) has begun and it’s time to grab the documents and run somewhere to a shelter, to a basement.”
Laurynas Kasčiūnas, the Lithuanian defense minister, said “there were definitely no external factors that could have damaged the plane.”
“We can clearly see that,” Kasčiūnas said. “However, to find out what happened inside the plane, it will be necessary to interview the surviving crew members. And of course, the black box. That will take some time.”
Flight-tracking data from FlightRadar24, analyzed by the AP, showed the aircraft made a turn to the north of the airport, lining up for landing, before crashing a little more than 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) short of the runway.
Weather at the airport was around freezing at the time of the crash, with clouds before sunrise and winds around 30 kph (18 mph).
The Boeing 737 was 31 years old, which is considered by experts to be an older airframe, though that’s not unusual for cargo flights.
The prime minister cautioned against speculation, saying investigators needed time to do their job.
“The responsible agencies are working diligently,” Šimonytė said. “I urge everyone to have confidence in the investigating authorities’ ability to conduct a thorough and professional investigation within an optimal timeframe. Only these investigations will uncover the true causes of the incident — speculation and guesswork will not help establish the truth.”

Social Democrats lead in early results in Lithuania
The opposition Social Democratic Party has won the first round of parliamentary elections in Lithuania, Lithuanian media reported, AP News reports.
After 100 per cent of votes were counted in the first round on Monday, the Social Democrats won 18 of the first 70 seats in the 141-seat Seimas, one seat ahead of Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė’s ruling Homeland Union party.
In the second round of voting, to be held on October 27, single-mandate constituencies will vote for the two candidates leading in the first round.
Šimonytė’s government took office in 2020 and has made economic gains. However, strict COVID-19 measures and an influx of migrants have cast a shadow over her cabinet. Šimonytė was particularly criticised for harsh measures during the pandemic, with many complaining that her government did not do enough to help companies during the lockdown and others saying thousands of people did not have proper access to health services.
The head of the Social Democratic Party, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, said she and the centre-left Democratic Union, which won eight seats, would try to form a coalition and support each other’s candidates in the second round. She was also due to meet with the leadership of another centre-left party, the Farmers and Greens Union, which won six seats.
Nemuno Aušra, the newly registered party of right-wing politician Remigijus Žemaitaitis, who was impeached earlier this year for anti-Semitic remarks, won 14 seats. The Social Democrats ruled out the possibility of an alliance with Zemaitis’ party. The last party to win seats was the Liberal Union, which won seven seats.
The election results continue the historical trend of voters changing their minds every four years. Margarita Šešelgytė, the director at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science in Vilnius, told The Associated Press:
The so-called pendulum principle makes society shift from left to right and so on. Not a single time since the early 1990s have Lithuanians voted in two consecutive elections for the same party to run the country.
Analysts say the shift to the left will not significantly change foreign policy in Lithuania, an EU and NATO member that borders Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave to the west and Belarus, a Moscow ally, to the east.
According to official figures, turnout was 52.1 per cent, up from 47.2 per cent in 2020.

(JTA) — Lithuania’s parliament passed a law this week to set aside over 37 million euros ($38 million) as restitution for Holocaust survivors and their heirs.
Ingrida Šimonytė, Lithuania’s prime minister, introduced the bill in the Seimas, Lithuania’s national legislature in Vilnius, on Nov. 15, proposing to nearly double the money the government had already set aside for restitution claims in a country where 90% of its Jews were killed in the Holocaust. Today only 5,000 Jews remain in the country.
The World Jewish Restitution Organization called it “an important step to providing a measure of justice to Lithuanian Holocaust survivors and their families for the horrors they suffered during World War II and its aftermath.”
The bill passed last week with an overwhelming majority, with 72 parliamentarians in favor, six against and two abstaining.
“No one can bring the lost lives back and revive the communities once we had. However, the approach the government shows in terms of restitution for the Lithuanian Jewish community devastated during the Holocaust is proper and is welcomed by our community,” said Fania Kukliansky, president of the Lithuanian Jewish Community, according to the Baltic News Network.
Over a decade ago, the parliament passed legislation to allocate 36 million euros, then worth about $72 million, for a “Good Will Foundation” that funds projects to benefit the country’s Jewish population. The money was considered restitution for communal property seized from Lithuania’s Jewish community under the Nazi occupation.
The present bill would allow survivors and their heirs to apply for restitution for personal property as well, while continuing to fund the Good Will Foundation.
“This is also a moral debt that should be acknowledged and, as far as possible, not 100%, resolved,” Šimonytė said.
Lithuania has a checkered history when it comes to Holocaust remembrance. The Nazi’s Lithuanian collaborators under German occupation were involved in many atrocities, including the massacres at Paneriai, a present-day suburb of Vilnius, where 70,000 Jews were killed between 1941 and 1944. Lithuanian battalions performed guard duty and organized deportations at the Majdanek death camp in Poland and the Warsaw Ghetto.
Jewish leaders objected when, in 2020, Lithuanian lawmakers considered a law that would have declared that neither Lithuania nor its leaders could be blamed for participating in the Holocaust because the country was occupied. Amid the rise in nationalism across Eastern Europe, streets, schools and monuments have been named for Lithuanian collaborators.
Despite the overwhelming vote in the Seimas, not everyone supported the bill.
“Our faction did not support it. We believe that the issue is resolved. Neither the motives nor the real reasons for it are understood,” said former Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, who is now chairman of the Democratic Union For Lithuania Party and voted against the bill.
“If we’d apply the same approach, then the story of compensation would be endless” he added, pointing to non-Jewish Lithuanians who lost property during both the Nazi and Soviet occupations.
“If every government starts believing it has an exclusive right to pass decisions on restitution, then, to follow the logic, every new government can start thinking that it has a right to compensate also all the Lithuanian nationals who lost their property in the 1940s and who haven’t seen any compensation,” Skvernelis said.
The bill’s passage was welcomed by the United States embassy in Lithuania.
“The passing of this legislation is an important step in recognizing the tragedy of the Holocaust in Lithuania,” Robert Gilchrist, the U.S. ambassador to Lithuania, said in a statement. “The United States Government strongly welcomes and endorses the Lithuanian government’s proposal to address longstanding issues of restitution for the Lithuanian Jewish community devastated during the Holocaust.”
