The kiss is the closest they've been, literally. And yet they've probably never felt so far away from each other 🤧

If they had said "I love you"
I saw somewhere on the internet a claim that that if either Crowley or Aziraphale had said "I love you, stay with me" it would've solved the problem. I feel like this is a very simplistic way of seeing things. Two options to consider:
(1) Crowley saying it:
First of all, saying "I love you, stay with me" is selfish and when you truly love someone you don't want to be selfish. For 6,000 years Crowley has never once been selfish with Aziraphale. If he had said that, it would've been nothing short of emotional blackmail - "prove me that you love me back by rejecting this thing that seems to be your dream come true" (and Crowley knows that it is - he saw how shellshocked Aziraphale when they were waiting for the bus after the Armageddon't; he's the one listening to him whenever he calls because the angel "no longer reports to heaven") or even "you can't leave me when I have all these feelings for you; you must accept them". That's not something Crowley would EVER think to communicate to Aziraphale. He'd sooner sacrifice his own happiness than do anything to force Aziraphale to give up on something he cares about. The frantic kiss that's meant to show Aziraphale what he's rejecting is the absolute limit of Crowley's selfishness and evidence of just how desperate he is.
(2) Aziraphale saying it:
I suppose Aziraphale's version would be "I love you, come with me", which imo would HAVE TO result in Crowley saying or thinking "Do you? When you want me to become something I haven't been for 6,000 years?" Now, if Crowley had said it out loud, that COULD've changed the outcome with Aziraphale realising how Crowley's feeling (but again, resulting in sacrifice on his side). Or it could not, with Aziraphale calling Crowley silly and failing to understand the gravity of his request. Thus, hurting him even more.
Either way, using "I love you" as an argument would effectuate in emotional blackmail and they both respect the other too much to do something like that. Instead, they both present an offer that the other can't accept - escape is not an option for Aziraphale, compliance is not an option for Crowley. If they had said "I love you, stay/come with me", all it would amount to is an attempt to strip the other of their free will. Those two characters respect each other too much and LOVE each other too much to say it under these circumstances. Them holding back instead of professing their feelings, even when it may cost them everything, is their ultimate act of love.

Am I the only one that actually agrees with Neil about season 2 being "quiet, gentle and romantic"? OBVIOUSLY not the final 15, but the rest was terribly sweet and so so so romantic.
The dancing? "I thought we carved it out for ourselves" "so did I"??? "Our car"????? Are you kiiiiidding me????
And- hear me out. What's more romantic than this:

neil gaiman: good omens is a love story!
the fandom: omg a love story 🥰
neil gaiman: *writes a plot line about miscommunication and how that leads to the main pair temporarily "breaking up", which is very much linked to the romance genre*

One good omens headcannon a day pushes the brainrot away 🌈🥳🤍🪽
Muriel has just finished reading all of the books in the bookshop. It's been some time since they were left to care for the bookshop. The demon Crowley dropped by every now and then making sure that they weren't selling or giving away any of the books as they almost did on their sixth day watching the shop.
Tumblr media
It was raining outside and Muriel didn't feel like going outside when they remembered what happened the other day. It was a good thing Crowley was there to stop their walkin-in-the-rain-without-getting-wet miracle of sorts. And she felt uncomfortable with the rain. Nonetheless they thanked Crowley after he scolded and hissed at her.
Muriel wondered what they could do to stop the boredom when an idea came to her mind. There were the hidden books on Azirapahale's desk they accidentally discovered the other day. Muriel made themselves a cup of hot chocolate and grabbed one of Aziraphale's hidden books.
It was odd, they thought. The first thing they noticed were a page thay protruded. They opened the book and marveled at the details of Crowley's face meticulously drawn on the parchment paper.
And then Muriel began to read outloud. They discovered this was entertaining rather than the quiet of the bookshop.
"I later found out that after his fall, Crowley can no longer see the stars. And I want to be the one able to help him see the stars again, for the first time. I've tried miracles to a certain effect, but they were of no use... I wi—"
Tumblr media
Muriel was confused as the book vanished from their hand. They were't alone anymore.
/From the journal of Mr. Phale Volume 4, page 44/
The thunder echoed inside the Bentley. As the first raindrops fell on the roof of his car, the Bentley, woth a mind of its own started heading fast to the bookshop. Crowley worried about Muriel making themselves stick out like a sore thumb again. He always wondered why Heaven and Hell keep sending their representatives on Earth without human training. It was understandable during the first few hundred years, humans were simpler back then, he thought. But then again, it was that kind of thinking that caused him to saunter vaguely downwards.
Muriel didn't notice him come in but he heard each and every word they read from the book. One he was sure he hadn't seen before.
He listened, holding on for dear life, "I later found out that after his fall, Crowley can no longer see the stars. And I want to be the one able to help him see the stars again, for the first time. I've tried miracles to a certain effect, but they were of no use... I wi—"
Until he couldn't.

Meanwhile, in Heaven, Aziraphale felt uneasy. He could tell that something was going on in his bookshop. His nerves were failing him. If only he could pop up back to his bookshop.

y’all ever stop to think about how lucky the good omens fandom is in terms of fanwork? cuz i do. all the time.
this fandom is overrun with fanart (spanning everything from breathtaking paintings to silly doodles, all of which is wonderful), there’s so much fan fiction, and endless meta analysis to be found.
there’s something so beautiful about watching this vast online community of people come together and just create. the fact that one story has managed to instill creative inspiration into so many people is just so amazing to me.

Well, it is, and always has been, a love story <3
Hit me like a cartoon anvil today that the reason I love Crowley in all the flashbacks so much this season is because they are from Aziraphale’s POV and it’s the story of how he fell in love with him.

My 8yo has drawn a comic in which Aziraphale proposes to Crowley. It shows the proposal, them walking down the aisle, everyone applauding, and them holding hands with rings. The last panel shows them at home watching TV with Crowley falling asleep mid-show. They're surrounded by hearts. A little arrow points to the words "And everyone fans and all were very happy."
That's not best bit.
The best bit is that at the bottom of the page, she's scrawled "IT'S GONNA HAPPEN, NEIL! JUST ADMIT IT!!"
I think I had better not tell her that Neil Gaiman inhabits Tumblr and is technically accessible even to a small extent...!

U ever just sit down and think— oh what a great love story Good Omens is.
Adam, the antichrist himself, loved his parents, his *real* parents, the ones that loved and raised him. He denied his destiny bc he knew what love is, and it isn't whatever the fck Satan is to him. He loved his friends, his family, and the world— love altered reality.
Beelzebub and Gabriel found each other. An angel and a demon who has known nothing but to obey what they thought they were made for. Choosing sides was their thing, but now, they found something worth more than that. They fell in love and suddenly, nothing else but them made sense.
Then, there's Nina and Maggie, defining a love that is new, and exciting, and difficult— makes you wonder if it would be worth it. In the end, Nina needs to heal and Maggie swears to wait. And I just wonder if it would work. I wonder if they'll be able to fall in love with each other, without outside forces pushing them together. Will they find their way to each other? But I think of Good Omens and I remember, it's a love story, so, maybe, they will.
Finally, there's Aziraphale and Crowley— the old love. Azi & Crow stopped Armageddon bc they love the world, and each other.
I keep thinking about their love, the way they reciprocate it so well.
S1, "Even if this all ends up in a pile of burning goo, we can go off together," that line made proof of Crowley's love, and it was directed to Aziraphale. He didn't need Heaven nor Hell, and he loves Earth, but when he said that line, that was him declaring that if they can't save Earth, then it doesn't matter— as long as Aziraphale is with him. That's his love, his truth, and it's them, Aziraphale and Crowley together.
Then, s2 (one of many reasons I love s2), Aziraphale proved to reciprocate Crowley's sentiment. "Nothing lasts forever," he said. He loved Earth, the bookshop was proof of this, he made a life for himself on Earth out of love. But, all that, meant little compared to Crowley. Aziraphale has been disobeying Heaven for as long as we have all witnessed, and he wouldn't have stopped Armageddon if he didn't know any better. And yet, here he is, willing to leave the life he's built on Earth with humanity, to be in Heaven with Crowley.
Aziraphale has been loyal, to the best of his ability, towards Heaven. He believed in the ineffable plan, but look at him now, going back to Heaven fully determined to change it because he knows that it will never be safe for them to be together unless they fix this. Heaven and Hell will always want their war, and unless they do something about it, it's not going to be a happily ever after for Aziraphale and Crowley.
And Crowley was hurt, has felt abandoned, and rejected. Because he just wants to grab Aziraphale and escape, but Aziraphale walked away.
And Aziraphale, too, was hurt, has felt abandoned, and rejected. He wanted to work on their happily ever after together, but Crowley walked away.
And after watching to the end, I wondered if they would work, if they would find each other again. But this is Good Omens, it's a love story, and in this love story, Aziraphale and Crowley have always been able to find each other.
And it's amazing. I have been thinking of love everytime I watch Good Omens. It just radiates so much love.
