MGH Group's perspective on trade and freight capacity issues
Tumblr media
Anis Ahmed, the Founder and Group CEO of MGH Group, a prominent freight and logistics firm, underscores the significant air cargo potential between India and China. This potential is driven by the strong demand from Chinese exporters for the Indian market. However, the trade flow is predominantly one-sided, with Indian airlines often returning from China with empty cargo holds.
“You can’t change much because Indian exporters aren’t selling to China, but the Chinese are eager to sell everything to India,” Ahmed noted in a recent interview. MGH Group, which serves as a general sales agent for ocean carriers and airlines and provides comprehensive logistics solutions, manages air freight operations from China to India through its alliance with IndiGo, India’s largest airline.
Ahmed pointed out that MGH’s operations in China are crucial for managing these shipments, but challenges persist. “There isn’t enough capacity available for air freight to support the online business from China to India. India doesn’t send much to China, so when the aircraft return, they are often empty,” he explained.
Chinese freight carriers such as SF Express and YTO Cargo handle most of the freight flights from China to India. Recently, IndiGo has started offering freighter services between Kolkata and Ezhou in Hubei Province, China. MGH utilizes both IndiGo and Chinese freighter companies for cargo transport.
“IndiGo is our gold standard. We aim to integrate with their network wherever possible. We’re connecting service belts for agriculture and industry that require faster transportation,” Ahmed added.
Despite the promising logistics opportunities, the bilateral relationship between India and China remains strained. Tensions have persisted since deadly clashes erupted along the Line of Actual Control in May 2020. Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has consistently emphasized that normalizing relations with China is contingent on achieving peace and tranquility at the border.
Ahmed, originally from Bangladesh and now based in Singapore, believes that for India to become a significant global supply chain hub, major players in the air freight industry need to emerge, particularly in the realm of cargo transport to and from India.

The Prospects of ASEAN’s Trade Integration with India: Challenges and Opportunities
by ASEAN Institute
Tumblr media
Striving for greater economic collaboration, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has sought to deepen trade integration with India. This article explores the prospects of this integration, delving into the challenges and opportunities that arise as these two dynamic regions endeavor to strengthen their economic ties.
Trade between ASEAN and India has grown significantly in the past two decades, fueled by their complementary economies and the signing of the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (AIFTA) in 2009 (Narjoko, 2018). While the potential for further trade expansion remains vast, several challenges impede the full realization of these opportunities. Among these hurdles are tariff and non-tariff barriers, divergent regulatory frameworks, and inadequate infrastructure (Pal, 2020).
Despite these challenges, numerous opportunities for deepening trade integration exist. India’s growing middle class, burgeoning services sector, and untapped consumer market offer attractive prospects for ASEAN exporters (Saha, 2017). Additionally, India’s expertise in information technology and services could facilitate ASEAN’s digital transformation and promote regional innovation (Menon & Sridhar, 2019).
To harness the potential of ASEAN-India trade integration, both parties must address the existing barriers. Enhancing regional connectivity, harmonizing regulations, and promoting greater transparency in trade policies could help foster an environment conducive to deeper economic collaboration (Das, 2021).
In conclusion, ASEAN and India have much to gain from further trade integration. By overcoming the challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities, these two regions can forge a robust and mutually beneficial economic partnership in the years to come.

Viji Palithodi is the founder of a woman's trade union improving the working conditions of women. It focuses on the rights of saleswomen, who beforehand did not have the right to access a washroom even when they were doing 12-hour-shifts: "In shops, workers, especially the women, aren’t allowed to sit even when there aren’t any customers. After our protests, an amended law ensured seats."
Tumblr media
Male-centric trade unions did not respond to these human rights violations, so Viji took it upon herself to form a women-centered union.
"After relentless protests and strikes, the government amended the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishments Act (1960) in 2018, mandating toilet facilities for women workers. Local administration built public toilets in Kozhikode."

I literally can't believe that trade unions centered around men did not take these torturous conditions seriously, but love that she stood up against it ❤️ and actually changed something

Secondo: Pirates of the Caribbean really introduced an eldritch octopus man that kills indiscriminately and torments the souls of the dead for fun as their poster villain, but then you watch the movie and it’s like “oh, actually, the worst villain in this movie is a small white British man who acts as the herald of capitalism.” Here is a man so heartless he literally cut his own heart out of his chest, but even HE isn’t as evil as the fucking East India Trading Company. That was very very brave and very very accurate of them.

the paradesi synagogue in kochi, kerala, india. the first synagogue on the site, built by the city's longstanding malabari jewish community, was destroyed by portugese who'd colonized the area in their persecution of locals. it was rebuilt in 1568 by spanish and portugese jews who fled persecution and later expulsion, hence the name "paradesi" ("foreign" in malayalam).
these sephardic jews and a community of jews of mixed african and european descent who were formerly enslaved ("meshuchrarim", "freedmen" in hebrew) joined the malabari jewish community of kochi and somewhat integrated. they were later joined by some iraqi, persian, yemenite, afghan, and dutch sephardic jews. the middle eastern and european jews were considered "white jews" and permitted malabari jews and meshuchrarim to worship in the synagogue. however, in what seems like a combination of local caste dynamics and racism, malabari jews were not allowed full membership. meshuchrarim weren't allowed in at all, but were instead made to sit outside during services and not allowed their own place of worship or other communal rights.
as the "white jews" tended to be rather wealthy from trade, this synagogue contains multiple antiquities. they include belgian glass chandeliers on its walls, hand-painted porcelain tiles from china on its floors, and an oriental rug that was gifted by ethiopian emperor haile selassie.

I ultimately wish Bridgerton had just scrapped the idea of racism and racial prejudice from their world and just had a world where that, really, wasn't an issue. Like that within itself would have been perfect because, not only, would it allow poc viewers to see themselves in a show without having to explain or justify how they got there (because whenever poc are in historical fantasies all of a sudden we have to face oppression or else it's not accurate 🙄) but also because...the introduction that racism did exist in their world was very...messily added, to say the least.
