Average fma fan talking about 03 positively: Man, it's such a miracle that the 2003 anime is written even halfway decently! After all, the writers who, as we know, have never written anything in their lives before [citation needed], they had to work while locked in individual underground cells [citation needed], only fed scraps of fma lore by Arakawa herself [citation needed] while her story was actually fully formed by the first printing of her manga in Monthly Shonen Gangan [citation needed] but they were adapting the initial first volume of manga and oopsy-daisy shot past it [citation needed], so they made up every plot beat, character arc, storyboard, and lore change completely on the fly and very randomly [citation needed]. Even though they tried to 1:1 adapt her story [citation needed, contradicted by existing sources], they fumbled the job and butchered her story, characters, and lore. Arakawa sagely forgave them [citation needed]. But somehow it's a cohesive story?! Wow! Even though the story is sad, dark, scares me, makes me cry, violent, gorey, and my fave ships aren't endgame, so -50 demerits. Still, good job team! A treat! A treat for the monkeys working the typewriters at Studio Bones circa 2002-2004! #fullmetal alchemist brotherhood

I don't like it one bit#it's... perhaps patronizing isn't the perfect word for it but something akin to it#like they're talking down to a gaggle of untrained school children who made their first animated short ever#instead of skilled professionals who actually put time and thought to the story#and weren't just making shit up on the fly per episode#all while acting like 1) the manga was even remotely complete by that point (there was only one tankoban when 03 was given the green light)#2) as if we don't have direct statements from Arakawa and Studio Bones that she provided some materials to them while requesting they creat#their own unique adaptation rather than following the manga#and 3) as if the team didn't plot out their own story & themes that they wanted to explore long before the first batch of episodes aired#(a lot of it is ignorance regarding the production process of animated media)#vent#fma 03

HARRINGTON AS TWOEY.................MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#THE RAAAANGE HE HAS IT ALL#but with that said#Jesus Christ The Puppetry Was Fucking Otherworldly#no pun intended i swear#like. again the volunteer performances did so well considering#but the sheer breadth of the skill difference between them and the professionals#GOD!!!!! GOD.#SHE HAD SO MUCH LIFE. SO DYNAMIC. Baby Taylor's baby voice is so endearing and it's going to be bittersweet to "lose" that on the TVs, but I'm really excited to hear how they clean up (or not) the production on Debut. I mean I know they're going to make it as accurate as possible to the originals, but I mean in the actual sound mixing and stuff. Because I feel like this album could benefit the most from some of that! Which is not to say that the original is bad BECAUSE IT'S NOT, but I think there is subtle stuff they can do with the mixing/blending/instrumentals/treble/etc. to make it shine even more.
#I don't want to say it sounds 'amateur' because it was obviously recorded by professionals#but there are some parts where i notice certain things in how her voice blends with the instrumentation#and I think they're really going to be able to make this part soar waaaaaaay more#like it almost sounds in some parts like she's singing over a karaoke track#instead of a full production if you get what i mean#it's just the difference of 20 years of evolution in sound production and design and in her own increased experience in producing#(sorry my dad does this stuff and like one road trip we spent the whole time listening to the latest mix of an album he was producing#and mixing for a friend and it's engrained in my brain how he was like dictating notes for me to write down so he could go back and fix#when we got home 😂)

#my desserts#okay the hot dog and hamburgers aren't my design they're one of the standard designs we're supposed to make#and about a week ago we were having a store tour#which is essentially when a bunch of rich people from higher up in the company come walk around the store#so everyone has to work way harder to make everything perfect and jam pack the shelves with food#so that they can look at it#and they send in people who's job it is to micro manage everything in the lead up to them coming#and they always insist on coming on like a monday or tuesday so most of that stuff expires and goes in the garbage#like if they at least came on like a thursday we could be prepped for the weekend rush#it costs a lot of money too like my manager owns the store and he personally has to pay for like#getting everything professionally cleaned and the extra hours and the extra product#and this was like the 6th visit in the past year! usually you get 1 or 0 visits in a year! why do they keep coming back!!!!#and this visit they were adamant about having those hot dog and hamburger cupcakes out as 6 packs#and if you're going to do 6 packs anything less than 24 packs looks pathetic#those of you who can do multiplication know that that is 144 cupcakes#and those of you with keen eyes can see that the bun is made by cutting off the top of the cupcake. which is very tedious#those cupcakes took me THREE HOURS to do#then as soon as they went out on the floor someone placed an order for 24 6 packs this coming weekend so that took me three more hours 😑#anyway after all that the higher ups didn't even come. they had 'dinner reservations'#but yeah making 16 to sell individually isn't so bad

#i have a couple reasons#1. nobody good is auditioning#2. its the highschool edition and i dont wanna do that lmao#3. i know most of the ppl who are gonna be in it and they are NOT fun to be around#4. i dont get to have input on the costume design or the blocking/choreo 🙁 ive already directed this show in my head#and im afraid nothing i could be in will live up to that#same with alice by heart tbh#but anyways. this might be my chance to actually finally see it live because i still havent despite living near a literal arts district#for some reason all of the many professional theatres there have still never done it?#there have only been like 3 productions in my state as well. which is wild#its just gonna be weird having to document people i know personally for jane 😭😭

i know as a garrus fan i can't really talk and i don't want to cause a whole Dilemma but the artwork for the mass effect board game is pissing me right off because it's so clear 90% of the effort went into liara and then everyone else is just tweaked screenshots and they claim there's no use of ai but shepard's face doesn't look right either or it's cut/pasted off something
#granted if it's called 'hagalaz' then surely it's about dealing with the shadow broker and thus liara is the actual centre of attention#but at that point why not just use screenshots. like either they hired a professional artist to make this and that's their outcome#and therefore like no creativity or research. or they cheaped out and got someone cheap who didn't have betterment resources#or something in between. or they got crunched. but just??? i know this is petty but it's just irritated me as an artist lol#especially considering this is endorsed/an official product and such like what happened#mass effect#edit: don't know why i typed 'betterment' but 🤷

#ugh. fuck me im so tired. im getting sucked back into that workaholic mindset and now my body hurts and my nerves are fying. but it feels#good to b productive. if only i didnt have to teach and could just work with data :-(#anyway. the last 2 weeks have been good in that i feel like im actually hitting my stride a bit#bc we're seeing cool things in our genomes and its gonna b really fun to explore. and i met with the terrifying#prof who is on my committee to pitch a project for a final in her class and it seems it went over well. it was kinda funny bc we were#meeting and she was like: so how would u tell which gene was lost 1st? the phytochrome or the genes that r triggered by activation? and i#was like: uhhhhh idk. and then my advisor walked by and she grabbed him and asked him the same question and he was like: idk we'll have to#figure it out. which made me feel way better abt not knowing lol. then my superior lab mate asked me a question abt taking confocal images#and i was actually able to figure out what her issue was. and my old advisor was asking me if i knew anyone to ask for using a pam on cyanos#and i was like: here is what i think my advisor would say and linked her a paper. then i asked my advisor and he said what i expected and#linked the paper that id already sent. so im like. ok. ok. maybe i actually sometimes do kno what im doing. sorta.#and then my old advisor said she was so proud of me. and i was like aw. its so funny bc my relationship is so different with my new advisor#hes great but its all very professional. with my old advisor i would text her after hours bc she was a workaholic like me and went on long#car rides and handed out Halloween candy with her. she was more hands on and doesnt have kids so work is her life. its just interesting#so things have been going well. but there arent enough hours in the day. and my committee meeting is in like 16 days. and i am afraid for#that but not as afraid as i was in april when i had a full on breakdown and canceled it the day before it was set to happen lol#itll b fine. i just have to work thru the weekend so i can get my preproposal done. and prey that the fucking splitstree download site will#start working bc i want to do gene networks dammit#unrelated

not to bring tiktok drama on tumblr but like every time a ‘scandal’ comes out with one of these ‘production companies’ that make fan films i always hope we’re finally gonna discuss how they professionalize something that should be an hobbyist endeavor… and yet every single time i’m disappointed.
#like I know we’ve been talking about it here on tumblr and i remember seeing like one or two videos on tt about it#but other than that creators really don’t seem to be engaging critically with the impact that the very nature of what they’re doing has#and look i truly do love the art that some of the people involved in the project make#like arone is truly one of the most talented cosplayers i know#ethan is an amazing actor and I’ve followed him since before he was even in the marauders#dorian is a great writer and idk the others as well but I’m sure they are all great artists#((naming the just cause i feel like being vague would be worse in this case))#and i do believe they engaged with the project with the best of intentions#without knowing or trying to afford grace on past controversy#and it truly is a horrible predicament to have your work be tainted like that for something you had no control over#but like i do think we should be questioning the very idea of how this fanfilms have been made is inherently a problem#like fanfilms are essentially fanfiction on camera#so as long as a few cosplayers want to get together with their iphones write a script and shoot at the local park I don’t have a problem#but if you are putting in place a product that somehow requires you to fundraise consistently for two years then I have a problem with it#ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SELLING THE SCRIPT TO DO SO#cause even if that script hadn’t been ai generated#that script is fanfiction and you do. not. sell. fanfiction.#seriously like… do we need to go over our abc again?#like fanart and cosplayers are a bit different in the sense that people sell fanart/do commissions and they can be professional cosplayers#but for any other fanmade project that requires you to put pen to paper (or keyboard to chatgpt ig)#you need to be engaging with several ethical questions regarding any exchange of money#and personally i don’t think that there’s been engagement with those ethical reflections#and this isn’t about any of the people involved and not even about mischief productions specifically#it’s about a wider issue in how we have been collectively normalizing a way of doing things that should not be normal#and like yes star using ai and being overall not good is bad but like can we talk about EVERYTHING ELSE please

#text post#idc what others might think#but college is not ALWAYS the end all be all#i know so many people irl close to me who dropped outta college#they just didnt find school to be productive and had little to no benefits for them and what they really wanted to do#they dropped out and started their own careers and businesses#the sorta jobs they wanted to do generally didnt require any form of higher education like a spoecialized college degree#or they just joined their already established family business and are doing just fine#ive wantched and listened to lots and looots of other professional artists viewpoints about art school#it really is a 50/50 thing#if u find it enjoyable and beneficial for your situation then go for it#but if u know you can grow faster in your career and skills learning on your own then you dont really need art school#i think one of the big differences in being a college dropout and being successful#is really just being self disciplined and smart with what you want to do#ig this is a rant lol#but yeah#it all boils down to personal situation#i want to live independently asap#and sadly where i live#having a college degree is a huge advantage in getting local job positions that need specialized skillsets
