had a dream last night night that my flight had a layover in the UK and at customs instead of asking questions like what kind of things you were bringing with you, it was like a personality/IQ test to see if you were worthy to come in + there were sponsored questions like "have you tried chupa chups brand liqueur", and the airport was more like a mall with no signage anywhere and all the UK people were so rude about it like "UGH you americans want everything just handed to you. figure it out yourself"

didn't win but I got honourable mention as most elegant design. I think this was the winner?? not entirely sure how the winner gets chosen tbh

at work they have a province-wide giant fake gingerbread house contest every year and I got put in charge of making ours this year

the windows light up but it's still too wet for me to lift up the house to get to the switch inside so here is the unfinished version with lights

I finished that dressup game I said I was working on !! would very appreciate people giving it a go because I spent literally a week on this. like 7 days off work doing nothing but drawing clothes lmao

in order to make the different body types work without ballooning up the file size way more than it already is, I had to make it so you choose your skin tone twice. in meiker you can't arrange the order elements appear in, but I recommend starting with these two options to pick out your body type and skin tone first, since some options look better on certain bodies imo

also !! meiker !! I don't hear people talk about it much, but it's really cool I like it a lot! it's like picrew, but instead of uploading a bunch of pngs, you arrange and label your layers in folders and upload a single psd file. personally I liked the process a lot more than picrew because I'd rather work with one big file than a million tiny image files, but that's just me. plus you can make the images bigger than you can on picrew too

also posting this again since I can attach it to a post with the game, but I made a tutorial on how to create a bunch of colour options super fast if you want to make your own dressup game. there's no way I'd have nearly as many options if I didn't know how to do this. once you understand the actions feature you can do so much stuff so much more efficiently it's insane it's like my favourite photoshop feature

has youtube been like stupidly slow for anyone else these past few days? I don't think it's the adblocker thing bc the videos themselves load quickly, it's the everything else that's slow. loading subscriptions & recommended pages, scrolling through those pages, loading comments and the info under the video, pausing and playing, and bringing up the progress bar all takes forever

christmas chocolate day 2. not nearly as much stuff as day 1, but the peanut butter bunnies need their own day because they can be finicky. you can really tell the difference between the new and the old moulds. they're definitely different manufacturers bc the old ones are flatter, but the new ones are so glossy too! I hope they hold onto that shine after I use and clean them a bunch

some tips for colours by me because by far the thing I get the most positive comments about on my art is the colours:

there is no such thing as bad colour combos. all that matters is that you have a good contrast of values (how light/dark the colours are) and that you arrange your coloured elements on the page in such a way that they feel balanced (unless you're intentionally trying to create tension using colours). so if your character has bright red socks, you better put bright red somewhere else in your piece or their socks are gonna look out of place. unless the socks are the most important part, then that's fine

after doing your flat colours, make your image greyscale to see what it looks like. there are a lot of ways to do that, but I just use a hue/saturation adjustment layer and turn saturation all the way down. if there are areas that are all kind of the same grey, make something there lighter or darker. sometimes I'll even adjust things with the greyscale layer still turned on if I'm having trouble. check the greyscale again after you add shading and stuff too

I abuse the shit out of blending modes. a lot of people will recommend using a cool-tone colour on a multiply layer to do shadows, and that DOES work, but I always try every single blend mode out when doing things like shadows and highlights just to see if there's something that gives a more interesting effect. try messing with the opacity as well if something looks cool but is too intense. I'm not always going for realistic, I usually just want really saturated colours that look cool. also I almost never use multiply, most of the time I go with colour burn or linear burn, though those don't play nice with white and near-white colours, so I sometimes have to shade those separately

sometimes I'll just throw a colour or gradient over the entire piece and try out different blend modes just to see if anything catches my fancy

GRADIENT MAPS are a game changer. one of the last things I do on a drawing is try out different gradient maps. you'll find ones that you like, but I like these ones that come default with my program. and ofc try every blending mode with these gradient maps

I DID IT AGAIN, two years in a row of drawing at least once a month. I'm gonna start working full time in the new year though, so unsure if I'll be able to go for three years
