This is part of a weekly series collecting updates from and relating to Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan.

This post is not wholly comprehensive and is intended as an overview, links provided lead to further details. Dates are in accordance with China Standard Time, the organization is chronological. My own biases on some things are reflected here. Anything I include that is not concretely known is indicated as such, and you’re welcome to do your own research and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. 07-10 → The Cyberspace Administration of China announced thirteen new regulations for improving news media transparency and authentication. This includes clear display of platform qualifications and affiliations, clear citation and dating of sources, labelling of if content is disputed, include clarifying updates at the top of articles, and removal of content found to be rumor-mongering.

07-12 → A very tiny text announcement appeared between TV programs announcing that Legend of Anle would be premiering that evening. 😅

→ Gong Jun’s studio made a new Weibo account (Gong Jun Outdoor Office) that seems to be for posting small personal promotional material for Legend of Anle. They posted a short behind the scenes clip. Caption: “Officially camping, let's start with some small materials~”

→ The Legend of Anle Weibo posted promotional stills of its main cast. Caption: “Bright and shining teeth are moving in the heart, a gentleman is full of loyalty and magnanimity, when the time comes, we will meet each other happily.”

→ Gong Jun’s studio posted a video of behind the scenes footage from a Legend of Anle photoshoot. Caption: “His eyebrows are picturesque, shining brightly. Thinking day and night, Ye is here!”

07-13 → People’s Daily posted an article announcing new measures against abuse of generative AI being implemented by seven government agencies effective 08-15 (a rather interesting choice in date). This includes regulations against infringement of portrait rights, spreading of misinformation, and manipulation of data security. 

→ The Legend of Anle Weibo posted promotional posters of the show’s couples. Caption: “One word with one heart, one glance to determine the deep love, pray for the same journey, and hope to stay together.” They also posted another poster of the main cast shortly after. Caption: “The flames of war are flying, fate is entangled, love is longing, blood is burning forever, guarding the frontier and creating a prosperous world.”

→ Gong Jun Outdoor Office posted two doodles of a glass, posted eleven minutes apart. [1] [2] Captions: “What happened to our prince's painting? → Dengta Data released statistics showing that Legend of Anle was the most streamed show that day. 

→ The Instagram posted ten photos of “Zhang Zhehan” and traditional architecture. (Someone’s jealous.) On a related note, whalers lost their shit trying to make excuses because the scam had repeatedly said that none of Gong Jun’s upcoming dramas would ever air. 🤡

→ The Legend of Anle Weibo posted a comedy trailer for the show.

→ Gong Jun Outdoor Office posted a video of behind the scenes footage of him in Han Ye’s costume from the L’Officiel photoshoot released 05-19. BGM is Lan Ting Xu by Jay Chou.

→ Bluebird tweeted about recent activity on Xiao Yu’s Weibo account, which had posted a selfie of “Xiao Yu” the previous day and immediately blocked someone who asked if Lexus was the one running the account. Anatomical comparisons and things present in photos suggest that recent photos posted by the account are from Lexus and Hewitt, and the latter is believed to be the one primarily managing the account. It has been known since last year that the scam gang had gotten access to it via the registration phone number, but they hadn’t yet done much with it.

07-15 → Gong Jun’s Outdoor Office posted two photos of Gong Jun watching Legend of Anle. Caption: “Sir Ye is wiping off Sir Ye’s sweat.” (Referring to Ye Qian, Gong Jun’s character in the drama he’s currently filming, and Han Ye, his Anle character.)

→ The Legend of Anle Weibo posted a music video for the show’s opening theme.

Because someone saying "this one single aspect of insert-media-here makes me personally uncomfortable" is not grounds to spin yourself into a tizzy convincing yourself that the person MUST be malicious, morally bankrupt, and attention-seeking to make the sort of claim you've flanderized in your heads. That's not healthy.

Opening up a conversation with a stranger by saying "hey I don't judge, buuuuuut" was the first mistake and set the stage for all of this ridiculousness. How can you judge/respect another person's personal emotional response to a thing? Trying to clarify something you think a stranger might have been uninformed by is fine albeit condescending in this case, but the reactions from everyone when I say "no i got it, I didn't misinterpret, feelings still happening" are completely uncalledfor. You claim I didn't read any of what you've written, while not actually reading OR comprehending what I've written.

Not to mention, there's a reason 'critical role' wasn't my first tag on that post. Tumblr tracks all tags, but such a huge fandom would warrant a single small 'hey this is how i personally feel, okay bye' immediately getting buried, wouldn't it? I actually really like organizing my own tags on my own blog, and unfortunately that includes a popular tag, since past-me didn't think of anything original for that. We are well beyond canary in the coalmine warning levels with the way trans people and particularly trans women are treated on this site.

Maybe you've heard the metaphor of allowing wolves and sheep to share the same space, welcoming everyone. You end up with just wolves because allowing them in that space makes it unsafe for any sheep. Or the story about how a nazi goes into a dive bar and is refused service. The bartender then explains to someone else at the bar that if you serve them once they tell their friends and before you know it you're the nazi bar they all go to and normal customers don't feel safe.

Terfs and other bigots are seeing these targeted harassment campaigns succeed against trans women and rejoicing. They see Tumblr ban them and officially stand by those decisions as endorsement for their harassment. It's a sign to bigots across the internet that Tumblr is a good place for them.

And what's more is that a lot of us probably don't realize just how much trans women contribute to Tumblr. The women banned recently were sources of site-wide memes and posts I wasn't even aware originated from them.any years old memes and references can be traced back to trans women on this site.

How many of these folks have to be removed before this is no longer a site you want to be a part of it? Sure you cultivate your own experience, but you can't follow or interact with people who aren't here. And if I wanted to interact with the nazis and terfs I'd go to reddit.

I encourage everyone to reblog this. Trans women shouldn't have to be the only ones speaking out against the bigotry they're experiencing. They shouldn't be the only ones risking their blogs being nuked by staff. We have to stand with them.

Lately, I've been thinking about Mithrun and the ways he is dehumanized in canon.

Before I get started, we know that elven society is incredibly afraid of death and illness. This is obvious in how they look down on the short lived races and see them as weak and childlike. We also know that Mithrun himself had ableist views toward his brother and these values did not leave him once he, himself, became disabled. He is a product of the society that raised him, but I also think how Mithrun is currently being treated contributes to his view of himself.

Mithrun has had three different caretaking groups over the years. The first are the ones his brother hired for him. From what we can see, they did the job, but we can understand that they did not know what to do with him. No one had ever recovered from having their desires eaten so the focus was less on rehabilitation and more on keeping him alive.

Later we see Milsiril take an interest in him because of his desire to return to the dungeon. Since she did not bother to visit him for decades after finding him, we can assume that there is an ulterior motive here. Timeline-wise, this was when the majority of the canaries had just been wiped out. They needed more men, and Mithrun is set up to be the perfect single-focused soldier.

Honestly, we can assume that Milsiril doesn't really care about him or see him as a person. Mithrun is just a new project for her to play with. We can see this in how she's focused on superficial level concerns like the fact that he doesn't look nice and wanting him to be overly grateful toward her. She also talks about him like he's not in the room and can't hear her. This is a dehumanizing trait shared by many characters when talking about Mithrun.

When he finally does recover enough to return to the canaries, the military does not make any effort to accommodate his needs. We know the canaries are understaffed and the ethics are already bad, but they really did not even try to care about Mithrun's safety at all.

Entrusting a criminal with his care was questionable at best, especially when Cithis immediately took the opportunity to abuse her power over him and no one stopped her.

While acknowledging the light-hearted nature of the manga, it's uncomfortable that Mithrun was treated like a child and an animal by Cithis for her amusement. Regardless of her 'learning to respect him' later, the point is that Mithrun was taken advantage of and degraded because she believed he couldn't say no. No one bothered to do anything about this until Pattadol yelled at her.

Truly his treatment is summarized well by Milsiril here. Mithrun is extremely vulnerable to being abused by those taking care of him because he won't advocate for himself. He has one desire so he won't fight for himself in any other way.

It is obvious that Mithrun was not treated well by his caretakers and this has resulted in him identifying his needs through a disconnected and frankly, infantilizing lens.

I understand that it may have been a translator's decision, but I always thought it was interesting that Mithrun says that he's "not sleepy" which is a childish term. Otherwise, he speaks like everyone else, if not rather posh.

This, followed by the fact that he is responsive to Kabru treating him like a literal infant to get him to eat, paints a clear picture of the fact that Mithrun is not unfamiliar with being treated like this. He responds to it because he's used to it and has no desire to argue with being treated this way. When we consider the fact that the chapter started with Milsiril treating an older child Kabru in the same way, it is likely that she also did the same thing to Mithrun when he was under her care.

In these panels, we see that Mithrun does not believe that he can sleep without magical assistance, even though it is immediately refuted when Kabru takes the time to bundle him up and help him relax. Not only does he fully believe he can't sleep without external assistance, but he states directly that there is no point in him getting comfortable.

As Kabru observes, Mithrun's inability to recognize his needs applies to needs such as hunger and exhaustion, but it obviously also applies to emotional needs. Kabru just wanting to feed him something delicious and not wanting him to give up on life is the most consideration someone has given Mithrun in years.

The relationship they form over the course of a single week is enough to shape Mithrun's behaviour completely. Mithrun ignores Cithis's demand in favour of asking Kabru's opinion. It is Kabru's hand Mithrun takes to pull him out of his defeated state. It is Kabru Mithrun confessed his true desire to.

Do you realize how depressing that is? All it took was the new perspectives from Kabru and Senshi to make him consider the fact that he should keep living despite no longer needing to fulfill his duty. Being treated well could have helped Mithrun much sooner and this shift in the way he sees himself contributes to his recovery going forward.

TLDR: Mithrun has no desire to be respected, but why does that make people feel comfortable acting like he doesn't deserve it? Someone not caring about being treated well doesn't give you permission to treat them poorly. This feels like a playschool-level consent lesson: just because he's not saying no to a humiliating or degrading act doesn't mean it's a yes and therefore okay to do. Acknowledging this is the bare minimum of treating him as a person.
