my understanding of Amrita, Imroz, Sahir & their unique dynamics

Sahir’s love made her restless. He was like a gust of wind, reaching her for moments, then withering into a smothering air. She could feel him, his presence but never touch him. He was there with her, in memory, in thoughts, in poetry and the ink of her pen but never in flesh. His love excited her but didn’t satiate her desires.

But Imroz was her anchor. When her boat rocked in the turmoils caused by her circumstances, he placated her. But though, he stabilised her, he also set her free. Free from any expectations or formalities. Like a kite she’d take flight, a string loosely in his hands, interlacing around his fingers. She still felt Sahir’s wind from time to time but he did not mind. For he was grateful enough to have her. & if her heart beat for another one at the same time, he accepted all without fright.

Arre tumhe vo nahi mila toh kya gila,

Kyu malaal karna hai abhi bhi tumko,
Zaroori nahi hai ki vo tumhara Majnu ho,

A beautiful nazm "dua'a" by Faiz sahab.
P.S. I wish I could write this in devnagari. Ghazals look so beautiful when written in Hindi or Urdu, English romanisations take away the beauty of matras and diacritics! Anyways here it is...
Dua'a
Poet: Faiz Ahmed Faiz (1911 – 1984)
Aaiye hath uthaiyeN hum bhi
Hum jinheN rasm-e-dua yaad nahiN
Come, let us raise our hands, as well –
We, the ones who do not remember the ritual of prayer
Hum jinheN soz-e-mohabbat ke siwa
Koyee butt koyee khuda yaad nahiN
We, the ones who [do not remember] anything other than the warmth of love,
do not know of any idol, nor any God.
Aaiye arz guzaraiN keh nigaar-e-hasti
Zehr-e-imroz meiN sheereeni-e-farda bhar de
Come, let us beseech that the Creator of existence may
fill sweetness in the morrow from the poison of today
Woh jinheN taab-e-garaaN baariye ayyam nahiN
Un kee palkoN peh shab-o-roz ko halka kar de
Those who cannot bear the burden of passing day,
May their eyelids be unburdened of the day and night
Jinn kee aankhoN ko rukh-e-subh ka yaara bhi nahiN
Un ki raatoN meiN koi shama munawwar kar de
They, whose eyes don’t have the strength to see the face of dawn,
May someone light a lamp in their night
Jin ke qadmoN ko kisi reh ka sahara bhi nahiN
Un ki nazroN pe koyee raah ujaagar kar de
They, whose feet have nowhere to go, no path
May someone illuminate a way to their sight
Jin ka deeN pairawi-e-kizb-o-riya hai un ko
Himmat-e-kufr milay jurrat-e-tehqeeq milay
They, whose religion is lies and deceit
May they get the courage to be heretics, and the audacity to question
Jin ke sar muntazir-e-tegh-e-jafa haiN un ko
Dast-e-qatil ko jhatak dainay ki taufeeq milay
They, whose heads await the swords of cruelty… to them
The power to ward of the hands that slay
Ishq ka sirr-e-nihaN jaan tipa hai jis se
Aaj iqrar kareiN aur tapish mit jaye
The hidden secret of love is a burning soul… with which
Let’s affirm today so the burning is eased
Harf-e-haq dil meiN khatakta hai jo kaante ki tarah
Aaj izhaar kareiN aur khalish mit jaye
The words of truth.. which rankle the heart like a thorn
Let’s proclaim them today to relieve the affliction

Köy Enstitüleri hakkında yazılmış en güzel şiirlerden biridir.
Şiirin yazarı Özbek İncebayraktar, 1970-71 yıllarında Edebiyat Öğretmeni ve Gökçeada (İmroz) Atatürk İlköğretmen Okulu'nun Okul Müdürü'ydü...
KÖY ENSTİTÜLERİ
Onlar,
Köy çocuklarıydı.
Kurumuş çalılar gibiydiler bozkırda.
Kavrulmuş ekinler gibiydiler.
Geldiler,
Yalın ayakları
Ve
Yırtık mintanlarıyla geldiler,
Gönen’e, Aksu’ya, Kepirtepe’ye.
Ezilmiş, sömürülmüş, horlanmış
Ve
Unutulmuştular bin yıldır.
Ferhat oldular,
Yardılar İdris Dağını.
Gürül gürül akıttılar suyunu,
Hasanoğlan’a.
Köroğlu oldular,
Kafa tuttular Bolu Beylerine.
Yıktılar saltanatını ağaların.
Tolstoy’u Balzac’ı okudular koyun güderken.
Mozart’ı, Bethoven’i çaldılar dağ başlarında.
Moliere’i, Sophokles’i oynadılar.
Horon teptiler Beşikdüzü’nde kol kola.
Halay çektiler Yıldızeli’nde türkülerle.
Diz vurdular Ortaklar’da efece...
Siz,
Her gece,
Mehtaba çıkarken Heybeli’de,
Onlar,
Duvar ördüler,
Çatı çattılar.
Yıldızlara bakarak yaz geceleri,
Harman yerlerinde yattılar.
Kazma salladılar yorulmadan.
Kerpiç döktüler
Kerpiç.
Sızlanmadılar hiç.
Yakıştı nasırlı ellerine,
Kitap ve çekiç.
Başladı yurt harmanında imece...
Bir gece,
Karanlık inlerinden sinsice,
Brütüsler çıktı ansızın.
Çektiler zehirli hançerlerini,
Vurdular sırtlarından haince...
Çıktı mağaralarından yarasalar,
Çıktı halk düşmanları,
Üşüştü sülükler gibi üstümüze.
Emdiler kanımızı,
Doymadılar.
Yıktılar umudunu Türkiyemin.
Aydınlık bir Türkiye gelir aklıma,
Kalkınmış bir Türkiye gelir,
Köy Enstitüleri denince.
Özbek İNCEBAYRAKTAR
Meral Güventürk den alıntı

I don't know but I am having this wildest dream that I wanna meet amrita and imroz. I seriously never have felt so much overwhelmingly connected to anyone as I do to them. From the first time I read amrita Ji's poem " Main tenu phir milangi" , my life found a beautiful meaning. I knew that this was gonna last forever for me . In a world not so sure about forever, I was damn sure about this gonna stay with me forever. And recently I bought a book and was reading their letters and found about imroz and what should I say , I think I found what I was seeking in them . I don't know how to explain it but reading about them felt like coming home . Literature has a heart and it can give life to you when you are losing it. It's like I can so much survive it well just knowing that they existed. Warmth transcends words and warms up my soul which is getting cold from the harsh winds of life. And what can I ask for more than a little bit of warmth , hope and love , which these words and their presence in them gives me ?
I would surely trade my life to just look at them in real life. My life's never going to be the same after knowing their existence and I am so glad about it.

Poetry and… Heartbreak

Poetry and heartbreak, sound very synonymous to each other, don’t they. They sure compliment each other. But why is it so? Or is it writing and not just poetry? Well! Writing your mind does help people who may or may not have friends to help them cope with heartbreaks. Sometimes writing is a way of communication, though one way, it helps lighten the burden. It is simply pouring your heart out and the paper just listens, it doesn’t judge you, it doesn’t give you solutions when you just want to be heard, it doesn’t form opinions about you when you are at your most vulnerable. Also, the paper won’t use your insecurities against you, once you mention your deepest secrets, while people might crack jokes in parties about it, after all it is ‘kalyug’ who to trust and who not to, we can never be sure.
‘Pain fuels an artist’ they say while some become painters, sculptors, musicians etc. some become writers. Being good or bad at it doesn’t matter. Doesn't matter if you are popular or not, or if the world is listening or if it is your profession, being a writer is about the soul, as long as it brings you solace you should keep doing it. Writing and for that matter poetry is about your own self and not about others. Sooo many writers penned down beautiful words to let out the chaos going inside them, be it Amrita Pritam or Nirmal Verma or Sahir Ludhianvi or Ahmed Faraz and many others. The art of writing also provides us with a window into the writer’s soul and mind. We know them without actually ever meeting them. Writing is everything, it is happiness, it is pain, it is a smile, it is a tear, it is the question, it is the answer, it is the mystery. A mystery that makes you want to explore it, know the person behind it and know who it is for. You want to know the whys, whats and hows of it.
Poetry is not the only expression of pain. There are various other writings from writers of different times that make you think how hurt was the writer when he/she wrote this. What was even going on in their heads and hearts that made them write this.
“How odd, I can have all this inside me and to you it’s just words”
-David Foster Wallace
“I mustn’t look at you too much, or I won’t be able to take my eyes off you at all”
-Franz Kafka
“The real test of character is how you treat someone who has no possibility of doing you any good”
-George Orwell
“I was burning while you came blaming me for the ashes”
-Fyodor Dostoevsky
All of these lines describe various emotions and yet hit so close to home. In my personal opinion I feel writing is a fading art, for that matter, a lot of things that require patience are getting lost in this world where people have ever shortening attention spans and much shorter patience scales. There are very few readers around me and much fewer writers.
I was just recently reading this book ‘Amrita-Imroz’ by Uma Trilok, which talks about the very famous Amrita Pritam’s (poetess) life with her partner Inderjeet Imroz. It is a beautifully written account on the writer’s meetings with the two and the conversations they had with her about their 40 year long journey. There are also several references to her poetry which show Amrita’s excellence. There is a lot of pain in her writings and rightly so, she too had a huge heartbreak, the heartbreak of her life, she is also said to be this embodiment of pain, which reflects in her poetry. Later in life she found solace with Imroz and it is his love for her that just mesmerizes you. One rarely finds such a person in this modern age. Someone who loves sooo selflessly.

But is it important to have pain to do any kind of art? Maybe yes. Maybe not. Everyone will have their own say in such a matter. Some may say yes it is pain and without pain you cannot do it. While the others might say happiness too fuels you, it inspires you. Well for me, the pain did it. It was the inspiration that drove me to write whatever I am able to. Maybe a day will come when there will be varied emotions that bring a different kind of art, a different kind of writing, from within me. Who knows. But it surely helped me to find my calling.
The relationship between heartbroken people and poetry or shayari will always remain special and on the top of the list. They will continue to be the writers, readers and listeners of it. As when the going gets tough, when you are unable to get those words out of you, when they are choking you, poetry provides you the medium you need. It becomes your solace. Maybe listening to it or maybe writing a few of your own. It helps you get out of the storm you knew no end to. Heartbreak and poetry and pain will always remain tied up to each other.

"Pritoo, আমি তোমাকে valobashi আমার mishti" Ashoke used to call her Prittoooo!
Ashima read something the other day, " Amrita, pyaar mei itna mat uljho, sahir tumhara junoon hai, imroz tumhara sukoon". Ashima thought to herself, ashoke must have read it too, it's all over the internet and he must have remembered her. Ashoke used to call Ashima- Pritoo, it was saved on his phone,on the letters ashoke wrote her, even on ashima's birthday cake , a name derived from one of her favorite writers Amrita Pritam.
Ashima gifted him a book, the third month they were dating "Amrita-Imroz". He was in Mussoorie, and she had fucked up, hurt him real bad and he was too kind or too dumb in love to forgive her She still regrets it, to this day. Ashima had believed in her heart that he was the Imroz she has been craving for, all her life. A stable support system, a soft lover boy, a person who'd hold her hand and travel to her dramatic world of imagination. She saw the reel and cried, the first time she cried after telling him she couldn't love him anymore. She missed him terribly that day and the ghosts of her lovely past haunted her all night. Oh how she wished she was not reminded of the time ashoke read her that book, on a rainy day at brown bread, their favorite bakery, while they had filter coffee. She even posted their photo with the song "tujhe bharlu apni baahon mei... Sajna ve" . She still wishes for that, but she will quietly go back to her world of imagination, alone this time though and miss him, wish for a love like that, which she knows she won't get.
