Watch Legendary love story ghazal song Lafz Bheege Hain
Sufiscore celebrates an epic Indian love story, an ‘amour eternal’ on the new release Lafz Bheege Hain (“Words Drenched in Tears”). The album features lyrics from the esteemed contemporary poet, Ajay Sahaab with beautifully sung melodies from lead vocalist Pratibha Singh Baghel. The songs on Lafz Bheege Hain follow the story of unrequited love involving two eminent writers from India’s social justice-oriented Progressive Writers Movement, Punjabi Amrita Pritam (1919-2005) and Sahir Ludhianvi (1921-1980). Pritam, a novelist, essayist and poet, discusses her unrequited love for Ludhianvi, the poet and film lyricist, in her 1977 autobiography ‘Rasidi Ticket’ (a.k.a. The Revenue Stamp).

“There is a saying in India that if you want to express love, you resort to Urdu,” declares poet Ajay Sahaab. Sahaab drew on his lifelong passion for Urdu to evoke a familiar “tear-drenched” story that has almost acquired the status of a legend or folk tale.
Lafz Bheege Hain consists of five songs, modern in sound and conception, yet following the traditional form of the ghazal: a poem with rhyming couplets in prescribed patterns, usually sung in Urdu, the “love language” par excellence of the subcontinent. This great love story between Amrita Pritam and Sahir Ludhianvi has been depicted in literature and film — and in that spirit, director Parasher Baruah has created a sequence of videos to accompany all of the ghazals of Lafz Bheege Hain, featuring famed actors Prachi Desai and Som Chattopadhyay in the leading roles.
The emotions summoned by this love story”, says singer Pratibha Singh Baghel, “are held in common throughout the world. Those feelings of love and separation and sadness are the same everywhere. The poetry and compositions of Lafz Bheege Hain are for everybody who can relate to this.” Desai strikes a similarly universal chord: “I don’t know where we all find our strength, but after some of the biggest losses we ever have, we somehow make it through. It’s a hopeful message for anyone watching these videos or listening to this music.”
To capture these nuanced sentiments, composer Rajesh Singh drew upon what are known in Hindustani classical music as “evening ragas,” scales and tonalities associated with the time of day, he says, “when the solitude is very intense, and the melancholy and sadness comes throbbing upon us.” From these evening ragas come the beautiful melodies of Singh’s imagination. The rhythms are hypnotic; the lush, flowing chord progressions are informed by Western harmony but applied in such a way as to underline the ragas’ traditional character. “As a composer I had to find a correct mood and balanced sound to express the melancholy and divinity of pain portrayed in these ghazals,” adds Singh. “I observed that the pain of separation expressed by the poet here has no bitterness, and there is a subtle acceptance of separation due to social circumstances. Hence the notes had to be carefully woven not to sound depressing or negative.
Arranger and producer Paras Nath played a crucial role in bringing Singh’s compositions to life with rich and varied instrumentation and sonic character. “Because of Paras’ contribution,” says Pratibha Singh Baghel, “I was able to deliver the way that I did. So a lot of credit for this project goes to him.” Building upon Singh’s vision for each composition, Paras Nath reports trying “to enhance the feel of the ghazal. In every song I used something different.”
Cello, acoustic guitars, violin, viola and keyboards enter into the mix of Lafz Bheege Hain as well as Hindustani bansuri flute, the fretless sarod and the bowed sarangi. “Each instrument has its own character,” Paras Nath observes. “I didn’t want a loud arrangement,and I was careful not to overshadow the singing and the lyrics.”
Along with her extensive accomplishments in Indian musical theater and Bollywood playback singing, Pratibha Singh Baghel has devoted herself to the art of classical Hindustani music in a forward-looking, internationally minded modern vein. Lafz Bheege Hain is a vital part of that effort. To the poet Sahaab, the goal is to “revive the classicity of the ghazal,” bringing the traditional form into vibrant contact with Western elements before a worldwide audience. “In a very humble way but with energy,” says Sahaab, “we are trying to convey emotions so that modern generations can feel the intensity of words, music, poetry, composition and instruments.
“For me the songs on Lafz Bheege Hain are part of a single work of cinema,” says Parasher. “I wanted to narrate certain aspects of the story and portray universal themes of love and longing. I approached the cinematography with an idea of recreating the 1950s and ’60s, a personal homage to the heyday of Indian cinema when romance was celebrated in all its emotions, blending poetry with visual storytelling. Choosing to shoot in colonial Pondicherry and Mumbai, our choice of locations, production design and styling helped in this a lot.” For Prachi Desai, the alluring beauty of the audio tracks generated all the inspiration and excitement she needed: “When I first listened to Lafz Bheege Hain, time stopped,” she recalls. “I knew I had to be a part of this. I’m glad that this was my first ghazal ever.”

Amrita Pritam (31 August 1919 – 31 October 2005) was an Indian novelist, essayist and poet, who wrote in Punjabi and Hindi.[1] She is considered the first prominent female Punjabi poet, novelist, essayist and the leading 20th-century poet of the Punjabi language, who is equally loved on both sides of the India–Pakistan border. With a career spanning over six decades, she produced over 100 books of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays, a collection of Punjabi folk songs and an autobiography that were all translated into several Indian and foreign languages.

“Sahir will be made only with Abhishek, and no other actor,” confirms Sanjay Leela Bhansali
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali fame bio-pic on the poet-thinker-reformist Sahir Ludhianvi has been the talk of the town for quite some time now, It was reported that Abhishek Bachchan will be playing the coveted role. However, a lot of changes in the cast have been reported since then. Names like Farhan Akhtar, as well as Irrfan Khan, were a few catching all the attention. There was news that the director has shelved the project and there will be no movie made now.
However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has broken his silence and said that none of the news about the project being shelved is true. He confirmed that the project is still on and that the film will be made soon. he also confirmed that Abhishek would play the lead role. “Sahir will be made only with Abhishek, and no other actor,” Sanjay said.
There was also news that Priyanka Chopra was approached to play the role of Sahir’s muse Amrita Pritam and she suggested replacing Abhishek Bachchan with any other actor. Bhansali however denied any such news and confirmed that only and only Abhishek will play the role of the lead lyricist and poet.
Sahir is one of the most revered lyricists in Bollywood who has penned the most evergreen Bollywood songs including ‘Mani Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hun’ and “Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein”. The comments on the same are awaited from Abhishek but Sanjay has made it clear as to who will be the lead actor of his most awaited biopic.

Love. An emotion that knows no boundaries, that has made people and broken them, that shows colors of humans unknown to them, also wrote unconventionally heart-wrenching stories. You must have read or heard a gazillion stories about love, from a happily ever after of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice to Shakespeare’s tragic Romeo-Juliet. But I’m going to tell you my favorite love story. A story that is wrecked by unrequited love while the ruins are fortified by an unconditional one. A story of cigarettes, love letters, paintings, passion, and poetry. It's the story of India’s greatest poets and artists. It’s the story of Amrita Pritam, Sahir Ludhianvi, and Imroz.
Our story begins in the year 1935 when a mother-less Amrita Pritam got married to a businessman named Pritam Singh at the young age of 16. No clue of what love is and against her will, this marriage was never the one that was meant to be for Amrita. She always dreamt or could even see a wheatish-colored man, blurry face walk with her all the time through all the things. But she could never figure out who was it. But it was all about to be changed in that mushaira on a cold evening in 1944 when a famous young poet was going to charm his way through Amrita’s heart. In 1944, Amrita attended a mushaira in Preet Nagar where her eyes were lit up when it fell on a shy, reserved Sahir in that dimly lit room. As cliché as it may sound, it was love at first sight of two opposite personalities, fiery, gifted with words and beauty, Amrita whereas insecure about his looks, chain-smoker, adorning talent that knew no bounds Sahir.
This cliché love story had just started and was about to take turns unexpected. After their first meet, Sahir would often visit Amrita’s house to meet her and her father who used to run journals. He would sit across her room and lit up a cigarette and won’t utter a single word. It is said that he would stub the half-smoked cigarette and leave, Amrita would collect the buds and put them in her cupboard to feel close to Sahir. Her love for Sahir knew no bounds while being caged in an unhappy marriage. One day, Sahir walked up to her and handed over a paper. He wrote a poem, “Taj Mahal”. Startled Amrita loved the poem but as she returned the paper, he said,” I’m not here to take this poem back.” And left the poem with her.
In 1947, India was torn by Partition. Amrita fled with her family to Delhi while Sahir reached the shores of then Bombay. She said that while leaving her home, she brought only two possessions that mattered to her the most to Delhi, her daughter, and that paper. While trying to build a life in Delhi, she got a job in All India Radio and kept penning her thoughts as stories and poetry. Meanwhile, the entirety of India was taken by storm by the powerful words of a lyricist no one had before, Sahir Ludhianvi. Movies were now being declared hits if they had songs that were written by him. All this while, they kept writing letters to each other. While Amrita kept showering her love, it was rare to see Sahir reciprocate. You see Sahir’s mind was always clouded and filled with various thoughts. He lived all his life after his mother divorced his abusive father when Sahir was very young. His mother had a stronghold on his life. He was always insecure that he wasn’t good looking, had commitment issues. He could never reciprocate what Amrita had for him, although he kept writing love ballads which are said to be based on their uncanny relationship, a more one-sided relationship. A disheartened Amrita thought that nothing could match the kind of love she had for Sahir but little did she know that there was a man who had dedicated his life for Amrita even without her knowing about him. When she started to hunt for artists to paint her book covers, an artist named Imroz stood there waiting for his chance to come. And that’s how she met Imroz.
As time passed by, Sahir started to drift away from Amrita, blame it on his commitment issues and insecurities, or blame it on destiny. But this had a heavy impact on her. She kept writing while traveling in buses to AIR for her job, which Imroz didn't like. He owned a cycle, so he decided to save money to buy a scooter so that he can drop her to the office and back home. He also painted all the book covers for Amrita. She asked him, “Why did I meet you so late in life?” Imroz, who was 10 years younger than Amrita, said, “Maybe because I came off age late or the money came in late.” Once when he was dropping her children at school, he was challan-ed for triple riding, so he simply decided to buy a car. All this was happening while she was unhappily married to Pritam Singh and still dealing with the ruins of the love of Sahir. But none it mattered to Imroz because for him, she was the one. You see human emotions are too complex to understand, it's never white or black, it’s always grey.
Finally, in 1960 she divorced Pritam Singh breaking the cage of marriage, and moved in with Imroz in their newly built Hauz Khas house where she would live with him for the next 40 years in a live-in relationship till her last breath. Amrita had found a new beacon of happiness and hope in the form of Imroz. They never committed, questioned, or labeled their love for each other. They never got married but stayed together like an inseparable couple. Imroz became Amrita’s shadow, devoted his life to her which came at great costs both personally and professionally. But nothing stood before Amrita for him.
Meanwhile, no one could understand what Sahir was going through or felt. He never told anyone what he felt. He was maybe scared to face his own emotions, or maybe he thought that this pain looked better in poetry than in conversations. Years later, in 1964 when Amrita and Imroz visited then Bombay to meet Sahir, he felt emotions that had no answers. But those emotions were later on crafted into a song in “Dooj Ka Chand” that helps you picture a certain shade of Sahir that he could never speak out:
“Mehfil se uth jaane walo, Tum logo par kya ilzam.
Tum aabad gharo ke vasi, Main awaara aur badnaam.”
“People who leave a happy gathering, What blame can I place on you?
You come from prosperous homes, And I am infamous and delusional.”
As years passed by, Amrita moved on with Imroz by her side, as he made her the subject of every painting he ever painted. While Sahir suffered in his own insecurities, shyness, and issues with loneliness and commitments, making him a victim of his mind. It is said that in 1970 when a famous composer Jaidev visited his house, the composer picked up a dirty cup on the shelf and commented about how it should be cleaned. Sahir yelled at once, “Don’t you dare touch that cup. Amrita drank tea from it the last time she was here.” Sahir never got married to anyone. He passed away in 1980 after building a pedestal in the world of literature that no one will ever get to. Meanwhile, Amrita took her last breath in 2005 with Imroz by her side. As she was about to leave Imroz alone and drift into the afterlife, she wrote one of the most memorable pieces of work she has ever written and you might have heard it for sure, “Main Tenu Pher Milangi” which translates to “I will meet you again.”
Why do I love this story? Because it has something for everyone. If you looking for hope, then you can find in the story of how Amrita was destined to find Imroz, her hope walked up to her. If you looking for ways to deal with your pain, you can find it in how Sahir dedicated his entire ordeal to literature and his work, making pearls out of his tears. If you looking for love, you can look into all of them as all of them loved but in their own ways, and it’s up to you to decide which path you want to walk on. This story is a perfect example of how complex human minds can be. So, all we can do is live our life our way, for if things have to happen, they’ll.

When I saw this entry, part of me thought I was to pick something explosive like their passion or temperaments. But honestly it’s not what I actually imagine. I think despite their sass or angst or bickering that their relationship over the years would actually accumulate into a simpler first kiss. Save the mad waves of passion for later. The first kiss is “friends realizing they were always meant to be more”; something honest and touching. And something that would always be, no matter the the time or place.
For some reason this kept taking my mind to Amrita Pritam’s poem and the beautiful rendition by singer Kavita Seth. In my imagination Steve continues to broaden his horizons by reading a book of poetry and comes across this poem. He keeps finding himself reading it. One day a curious Tony asks what has he been reading so intently, seeing only the title of the poem over his shoulder, and then asks Steve to read it to him, but Steve, suddenly a shade of pink as he looks at Tony, feels too self conscious to do so. Tony teases, but then makes a comment that most poetry is better in its native language anyway. JARVIS suddenly interjects, offering to play this song for them and they agree. As the beautiful singing washes over them… this happens: 💋 And when they pull back, after a moment of breathing each other’s air space, Tony says Steve’s going to have to read that translation to him later after all. Steve no longer seems too self conscious about it anymore (Good work, J 😘)

विरह I have learned, it is a unique word to the Hindi language, and it is hard to find an exact translation. It is one of those words where the meaning is in the state of the mind of the listener.
For Amrita Pritam, it stood for the loneliness and love that arises out of separation. Separation that occurred at a massive scale which divided people into two separate nations..Hindustan and Pakistan
The pain of विरह flows out in her sonnet on the partition of India which is now an iconic piece of the partition literature. A trailblazing piece of history.
Quite ironically she calls out to Waris Shah who was already dead at the time .
The visual is one of the most popular romances of Punjab -Heer Ranjha , penned by Waris Shah himself .
The old पीर had the ability to step inside a human heart and had beautifully described the विरह of Heer from Ranjha at her रुखसती I guess that’s why Amrita chose him to personify the pain that she felt .
Gave me the goosebumps !
Lata Mangeshkar ji’s voice elevates this song called हीर to another level of perfection. Her best rendition , in my opinion.

Amrita Pritam (31 August 1919 – 31 October 2005) was an Indian novelist, essayist and poet, who wrote in Punjabi and Hindi.[1] She is considered the first prominent female Punjabi poet, novelist, essayist and the leading 20th-century poet of the Punjabi language, who is equally loved on both sides of the India–Pakistan border. With a career spanning over six decades, she produced over 100 books of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays, a collection of Punjabi folk songs and an autobiography that were all translated into several Indian and foreign languages.

Some additions that I read for an African American Studies class about the use of sound in black narratives last semester: Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, The Street by Ann Petry, and Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward.
Some additions that I read for a Global Literature class about the Indian Partition a couple of years back: Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh, “Toba Tek Singh” (a short story) by Saadat Hasan Manto, and Pinjar by Amrita Pritam.*
*Just a note, the stories of the Indian Partition generally include a lot of violence, so make sure you take that into account before reading; of the three above, only “Toba Tek Singh” is free of violent scenes. All of them are originally written in Urdu, Hindi, etc., so you’ll have to make sure you’re getting a translation if you don’t speak/read the languages they’re written in!

Google honours the 100th Birth Anniversary of the Novelist, Poet Amrita Pritam
Amrita Pritam : Viewed as the first prominent lady Punjabi writer, author and essayist, Amrita Pritam was conceived on August 31st 1919. The leading twentieth-century artist of the Punjabi language created more than 100 books of verse, fiction, histories, expositions, Punjabi folk songs and an autobiography that were converted into a few Indian and foreign dialects.
Amrita Pritam is most associated with her poignant poem “Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu” (Today I Invoke Waris Shah) which addressed to Punjabi Sufi artist Waris Shah in which she wails the deplorability of the segment of Pakistan from India.
She was born in Gujranwala, Punjab (currently in Pakistan). She was named as Amrit Kaur. Her father’s name is Kartar Singh Hitkar, was a scholar and poet
In 1956, she was the first women to win the Sahitya Akademi Award for her poem, ‘Sunehade’ (Known as messages). In 1981, Amrita Pritam won the Bharatiya Jnanpith for the novel ‘Kagaz Te Canvas’ ( Known as the Paper and the Canva). In 1969, Amrita Pritam was deliberated with the Padma Shri and in 2004 the Padma Vibhushan. She was likewise granted the most astounding honor given by the Sahitya Akademi – ‘Immortals of Literature’ in 2005.
In 1986, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Noted lyricist Gulzar published an audio album, ‘Amrita recounted by Gulzar’ in 2007.
On Saturday, August 31st, Google celebrated Amrita Pritam’s 100th birth anniversary with a doodle by Vrinda Zaveri, an artist. In the doodle Amrita Pritam is seen sitting before a lot of dark roses as she writes in a journal. The doodle conveys a reference to Amrita Pritam’s life account ‘Kala Gulab’ (Black Rose).

Pinjar
Written in 1950 by noted artist and writer Amrita Pritam, the Punjabi epic is the narrative of Hindu young lady, Puro, who is kidnapped by a Muslim man, Rashid. Puro’s folks will not recuperate the debased young lady when she figures out how to get back to her her folks from Rashid’s home. Viewed as probably the best writing composed with background of Partition of India, Pinjar was also adopted in Hindi film in 2003 . The book was deciphered in English by Khushwant Singh and Denis Matringe interpreted Pinjar in French.
Raseedi Ticket
Amrita Pritam’s praised autobiography Raseedi Ticket discusses how she felt bothered at the impact of abhor. The Punjabi author discusses how an essayist ought not fear criticism. It likewise portrays the occasions between her closeness with Sahir Ludhianvi and profound fellowship with Imroz.
