He Loves Us, He Loves Us Not: What is Raphael’s Relationship with Tav/Durge?

*Puts on my little mouse glasses* I’m glad you asked. I’m summing up a few points that I have also written about in another analysis called ‘Raphael and weaponized mortality’, so if that sounds interesting, you can find it in my reading list.

Everything about Raphael screams wolf in sheep’s clothing (or a cambion in man’s clothing if you will). Here are a few points illustrating this:

Cambions naturally have a really predatory kind of stench to them because they are entirely carnivorous. Yet, he is described as a perfumed trickster who smells of cherries and sulphur, most likely because he is trying to cover up that smell.

Poetry, an art that is very dependent on nasty mortal concepts such as ‘feelings’, is something we know he uses a lot. He’s not really good at it and he even says it’s not his ‘main interest’ to Karlach in the second act. His theatrical nature and use of poetry humanizes him, and I think he is well-aware of this.

When you call him out as a devil in front of Mol, he says something about how she wouldn’t believe them anyway, ‘not with his angelic complexion’. We also know that Gortash’s parents sold him to a ‘warlock’ and that’s how he ended up with Raphael. I’ve seen multiple places that that warlock is supposed to be Raphael himself.

Now this all makes me believe that he usually does not reveal his true nature to his clients unless: 1) they’ve already signed, or 2) they are so utterly fucked that they have already reached the point of no return with him and are forced to take his deal no matter what.

Yet, he reveals his true nature to us from the get-go. Yes, one could argue that the tadpole-gang does fulfill option 2) according to him and that’s why he does it, but I think it could also be something else. I think he knows from early on that we are his best bet, so he chooses to lay out all his cards on the table and tries to build as much trust as he can from the beginning.

This is also the function of helping us with Astarion’s scars. Dealing with a devil when you’ve never dealt with one before? Scary. Dealing with a devil when he has proven once before to keep his word? Much less scary. He’s ‘grooming’ us for trusting him to keep his word with THE deal (and he gets to fuck over Daddy Meph by potentially robbing him of a lot of souls. Win-win.)

I think Gale is right on the money when he says that it’s ‘a devil’s equivalent to serenades and roses’. Raphael is like a bird or something. He’s showing off, charming us, but also reminding us that he is big and scary. Although despite the fact that he is big and scary ‘he simply wants to help us’.

He’s done his research and already knows everything about us, so he knows exactly how to play us. This is demonstrated in the comment to Durge in the beginning and the thing he says in Last Light if you tell him he knows nothing about you: “Don’t I indeed?.

I really think that we turn into an obsession for him at some point and that the lines between the obsession about the Crown and his obsession about us blurs. This seems definitely to be the case in his journals. I mean the poor guy has nightmares about us…

I also am so sure that he is not even trying to trick us into anything with the Orphic Hammer. He truly does believe that the Emperor is a threat to us. See this:

I DO think he admires us or at the very least is heavily rooting for us. I don’t remember the exact quotes, but Korrilla tells us in Sharess’s that her and Raphael made a bet about if we would make it to the Gate, and Raphael won that bet because we had. He really believes in our merry little band of idiots.

His reaction if we betray him is also very telling I feel like. Notice how his eyes widen for a moment before they narrow and say the ‘You’ line. He seems surprised. In that whole sequence he is obviously pissed, but most of all I also just get the feeling of a man that has been humiliated and who is angry that he had put so much time, work, and trust into us.

He says that ‘he is fond of us, in his way’ and that I completely believe. It might not be out of love or affection or anything like that, but he is as fond of us as a cambion can be of someone. We’ve grown on him, and he sees potential and use in us. We fascinate him and I’d even go as far to say that he respects us. I feel like even if you give him the Crown of Karsus and he gets to rule the Hells, he will not forget the people who brought him there. He would not flaunt the fact that he had mortals help him get the Crown, but I think that when he goes on his spree to fuck up the realms outside the Hells, Tav and gang would at the very least be spared or even given privileges in that new world order. Is that a bit fucked up? Yeah…But we have to remember what he is: a devil.

Various tabs of the console filled Monika’s vision, a perplexed look crossing her face as she stared at the files counting your replays. Her chin rested between her thumb and forefinger, pondering why you had looped the first chapter over and over, confusion racking her mind as she continued to search for a possibility. Perhaps your game glitched? Or the code wasn’t working properly?

“Why does she keep repeating the first act..? There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the script..” she muttered under her breath, clicking her tongue in mild frustration. Reaching up, her fingers gently swiped along the console, trying to view all the recorded replays of the first act in a desperate attempt to seek the root cause of your game loops.

Monika intently traced the the contents of the digital code, reflections of the binary patterns and script mirroring into her emerald green eyes with each tap into a different file. Each movement of your mouse seemed…off. Your clicker would often stray off to the side, deviating from the displayed choices of Sayori, Natsuki, and Yuri, while tracing it up and down as if you longed to find an alternate option.

She merely squinted her eyes at the replay of your mistakenly mindless gameplay, tilting her head in confusion as this pattern was repeated and prevalent across all your replays of the first chapter. That was until she stumbled across a particular point into your gameplay, her own body growing somewhat tensed as the repeated choice reflected across every replay of Act 1. Every single time. Monika paused for a brief moment, unsure on whether to feel elated, or confused in that moment as her hand rested onto her chest and clutched the fabric code of her blazer.

She wasn’t just getting her hopes up..right?

The choices presented themselves before you on the screen once more, depicting all four of the literature club members’ names in seperate pink boxes. Even after returning to this moment constantly, you remained utterly confused, eyes fixated on your screen with your pupils drilling into the pixels like a deer in headlights.

You felt fairly disoriented from the little chime noise emitting from the game every time your mouse hovered over one of the boxes, inching your face closer to the screen illuminating your face and splaying streams of light all across your desk. Your expression contorted to one of mild annoyance, brows furrowing and wrinkling your face up as you could only feel your shaky palm gripped atop the mouse. Why couldn’t you choose Monika? Why on earth were you restricted to the three girls you didn’t show any interest in?

Clicking on her name once more, you were met with the same dialogue spewing out of the line of text in game. That it wasn’t necessary to help her prepare for the festival. It was completely incomprehensible as to why this game wasn’t allowing to choose the route of the character you had your eyes on, making you scoff as a wave of irritation continued to bite at you.

Monika’s eyes widened upon seeing each brisk movement of your mouse, carefully examining how it clicked on her name each and every time it popped onto the screen as an available option. The script of the game barred her from having a route path, on top of that bestowing a near god like power within this digital world she was coded into. It was torture. The flashing colored lights burned her skull, the endless piercing screeches shattering through her ears as she was discarded into the void. Only knowing that she was trapped in a fictional world, believing she was the only one who was real.

A near unnerving smile stretched her lips, pursing them shut to mask her boiling excitement. You had been her only escape. Every time you opened up the game, she was freed from the agony of her solitude. Monika’s hands rested along the edges of the console, breathing out a content sigh. Her eyes flickered to your mouse jittering in possible frustration from the lack of response to choosing her once more, warmth seeping into her heart as she longed to snatch you to herself right then and there.

Ah. She had someone who actually desired her presence. Someone who wanted to spend time with her. No worries, (Name). You’ll be hers before long. Just be patient.

She snapped back to the game, her face seemingly more lit up, yet her sprite kept it as still as a rock as she stared straight into the screen. Her sprite was there while she tweaked the console and spoke to herself, but maybe she could finally rest for once. She could rest easy and let you play knowing you’re only set on her. Monika smiled to herself, hands grasping her elbows as she glanced over her statue of a sprite standing in for her there.

Her gaze over the protagonist made her nearly scoff from annoyance. His sprite repulsed her. Everyone else could have that piece of trash separating you from her. Monika only wondered to herself how gorgeous your complexion could be once she gets the chance to lay eyes upon you in person. If only she could crawl through the screen and wrap her arms around your neck in an embrace to feel your warmth.

It was only a matter of time. She just had to wait for you to reach the third act, and you were all hers.

1) I tried to make them all something that is related to their adventure AND will make sense in their quests, so we have:

Wind - Seagull

Four - Mouse

Hyrule - Fairy

Wild - Fox

Legend - Rabbit

Sky - Loftwing

Twilight - Wolf (well it would be more a mix between a german shepherd and a wolf if we go with the technicalls)

Warriors - Lion

Time - Wolf

Twilight is able to turn hylian, the same with Hyrule! the only diference is that Twilight uses the aid of the light spirits, while Hyrule is able to do this for himself

im still deciding if make this also something that Four can do, but i'll see when i finish playing minish cap lol

As an extra theres also Ravio who is a bunny and Malon who is a German Shepherd!

if i remember correctly i also added Spirit somewhere, who is a draft horse

Wind: There's this old lady in Outset island that took care of him and Aryll when their parents never came back, she makes the best fish soup! she always give them some

Four: Loves the pastries in Castle Town! Always goes to visit the minish there to have a chat and taste all the sweet bread

Hyrule: Anything tooth-rooting sweet! but fruits like strawberries are his personal favorites, in his era there's not much of them to taste (thats why Wild's Hyrule is one of his favs behind Legend's)

Wild: This damn fox eats anything that can enter his mouth. But! He loves a lot fish, he visits frequently Zora's domain and Sidon always gives him some, the same in Lurelin Village after the locals got used to his presence

Legend: Apples, also red poppies are one of his personal favorites, Ravio always find some when they explore around the forest

Sky: This bird loves fish a lot, and since he got to taste the trouts in the surface they became his favorites

Twilight: Yeto's soup, he got to taste it while hylian, and hes glad that he did that, he didnt thought that the soup could get better with wolf hair. A second place is definetly baked cucco

Warriors: See this giant cat? he's completly in love with Hyrule's food since he got to taste it, his personal favorite being the beef of Castle Town

Time: since a puppy he has been feed with a simpler diet, mostly tiny roedors and some fruit, but since he got to stay in the ranch his fav is fried cucco eggs, Malon has to talk with the cuccos cuz they dont let him near to take the eggs tho

3) Absolutely. Twilight is very protective with the ones he consider pack, so he express his love with a lot of physical touch. He always tries to stay close to Time, and keeps company Wild as he is almost like a pup in his eyes. He tried with Legend, that rabbit's bite is strong

Wild, Legend and Hyrule cuddle together a lot, sometimes Four joins them

Sky mother hen's everyone, he's the biggest in the chain and even Time or Wars cant escape his big wings covering them completly. The only one who isn't found of him is Wind

Wind stays very close to Warriors, always on his back and sleeps covered by his scarf and mane, Four also joins them sometimes, being the smallest one makes him very pocket sized for everyone

im gonna do the second one but not the way i think it would normally be done lmao :)

prompt: "where have you been? i was so worried! are you hurt?"

it was ten o'clock. it was ten o'clock, and eel had said he would be back at the lodge no later than eight-thirty. and dimes was getting worried.

shoe had gone with him, wherever they went, and had said something about going to see the leader of the bronx, which, given how late he said they would be back, checked out, because the bronx was all the way on the other side of the river, and then all the way through lower manhattan, so dimes knew it would take a long time to get there and back, but still.

it was near two hours after eel had said they would be back, and dimes was trying to reason with himself. maybe they just lost track of time. no, eel had his pocket watch, and when he wasn't fiddling with the chain, he was checking it religiously, as being late made him nervous. and shoe may not have been the best at remembering names and faces, but he had memorized the entire street system of the entire city for fun one particularly bad winter, so there was no way they could've gotten lost, between his knowledge and eel's street smarts.

dimes slid silently off eel's bed where he had been waiting, and padded silently downstairs to the room where the lodging house keeper slept, and creeped into the doorway.

"miss eden?" he whispered nervously. she awoke imediately, turning to see what the small teen wanted. "si, mio nipote?" she rasped, her voice heavy with sleep.

dimes gulped. "do- do you- does youse know when eel'n shoe says they would be back?"

the woman's long brown hair, silvering at the roots, fell gracefully over her shoulder as she sat up more. "are they not back yet? ezechiele said he would be home at eight." she yawned aggressively. dimes' brow furrowed, but he started backing out of the room. "s'ok, miss eden, i'se sure they's 'll be back soon." eden just rolled over and fluffed her pillows as she sighed.

dimes chewed his nails as he padded out into the common room and stood there. he couldn't wake anyone else up; squirt was a little, he wouldn't be of any help, mouse might be able to, but he never slept enough so his few hours were precious. moon was off in harlem; he was staying with his sweetheart, she had invited him over for dinner the day before, and he had said it was probable he wouldn't be back that same day. bubbles would just laugh at him for worrying, then promptly get worried himself, breaking down his "emotionally-unavailable-bad-boy image" (his words) and showing his genuine concern.

so dimes was alone on this.

just as his eyes started to burn and his throat started to close up in panic, the kitchen door creaked open.

he raced into the room and stopped short at the sight of eel leaning heavily on shoe, the latter practically holding his entire weight as moonlight spilled in from the open door behind them. eel was clutching his side, just below his ribs as the two stumbled into the kitchen. dimes stood there gaping at them, before he sprinted at them and caught shoe in an awkward hug.

he pulled back and promptly slapped the taller boy. "where were you? it's been two hours since ya said youse would be home!" dimes stuck an angry finger in shoe's chest as the teen reeled from the slap. "i'se was so fuckin' worried about ya-" he stopped as eel let out a indignant huff.

"don't-" he coughed weakly. "don't swear, kiddo." dimes laughed incredulously. "yeah? well don't do stupid shit an get youself hurt again-which i still need to know what happened-and i won't call you every name in the book, you son of-"

zeke's head drooped and his eyelids fluttered. shoe quickly moved past an indignant dimes to put eel on a couch, before unbuttoning the latter's shirt and vest to look at the wound.

eel panicked, shoving shoe's hands away and curling up as best as he could. "no...please! please, i ain't...no..." his words were starting to slur, bloodloss and delirium setting in as he backed away from his lover, eyes wide but unseeing. shoe stopped moving immediately, dropping his hands to his side and lowering his voice. "hey now baby, i'se just tryna see how bad it is. i swear on my life i ain't gonna do nothin." he murmured, making eye contact with the shaking teen.

eel blinked at him, eyes glossy, before he nodded slowly and carefully unclenched his limbs to allow the other to look at the wound on his side. he flinched, hard, as the taller boy's hand touched his side, and shoe winced right along with him, putting a reassuring hand on his stomach gently as he peeled the fabric away from the source of the blood.

the noise eel hid in his throat was so full of pain, dimes backed away, shutting his eyes as he put his hands over his ears and sat on the floor.

"good news, you only got grazed. bad news, youse lost a lotta blood." dimes scrambled to his feet and rushed over, eyes wide as he peeked around shoe to look. the sheer amount of blood made him nauseous, but years of living in rough neighborhoods taught him that it wasn't as bad as it looked.

shoe put his hand firmly over the wound-which dimes had figured out was a gunshot wound, he would definitely be asking about that later-and turned to the hovering boy. "bring me some water an a rag, yeah? oh, and grab some'a the bandages eel keeps in the cabinet in the bathroom."

"youse wasn't s'posed to know bout those, tesoro." zeke grunted, teeth clenched. "yeah well, you should've hidden em better, and not gotten shot!" shoe snapped as he brushed his partner's hair out of his eyes, no real heat behind the words.

dimes rolled his eyes at their antics. like an old married couple, he thought fondly as he raced upstairs to get what shoe had asked.

after eel was patched up and given a damp cloth to rest over his eyes (shoe said he cracked his head against a wall, this would help with the headache) dimes was curled up in an armchair across from the resting teen, watching shoe out of the corner of his eye as he puttered around the rooms. shoe finally came to rest in the other chair next to dimes, flopping down with a worried sigh as he glanced over at his lover.

dimes sat watching shoe watching eel, wondering what he was thinking.

dimes had never really understood why people kissed, or got together. he didn't know why people said they fell in love. what did love even feel like? he wasn't quite sure, he had never felt that for someone before.

but looking at shoe, seeing the expression on his face as he took care of his partner, dimes was pretty sure that that's what love was. taking care of someone, respecting their boundries and helping them get through life. togetherness.

near as dimes could guess, that's what love was.

and his heart felt full at the thought of someone making his...eel was practically like his dad at this point. his older brother so happy, and seeing the looks they gave eachother may have made him want to barf, but the sweetness of those glances when they thought the other wasn't looking wasn't lost on him.

no, he may never feel love like they did. and he was ok with that. but he was so glad that his two favourite people got to experience that joy with eachother.
