Lorenzo Berkshire was used to attention. It came naturally, like the breeze flowing through the dungeons of Hogwarts. His charm was undeniable, his smile a constant source of flustered stares and half-hidden blushes. But for you? Things were a little different.

You’d never been particularly fond of eye contact. It wasn’t shyness as much as it was discomfort — eyes always held too much, revealed too much. So, naturally, you avoided it. When people spoke to you, your gaze drifted elsewhere: over their shoulders, to the floor, or anywhere but their eyes. It wasn’t a problem, not really, because everyone had come to expect it from you.

Except with Lorenzo, it was…different.

You didn’t just avoid his eyes — you couldn’t even look at him. Not even for a second. Every time his deep brown gaze turned to you, a wave of heat washed over you, leaving you frozen, fumbling, and searching for any safe spot to rest your gaze that wasn’t his face.

And Lorenzo? He noticed. How could he not?

It wasn’t unusual for you to talk to Theodore Nott, making light eye contact when necessary, or even Blaise Zabini, though fleeting. But the moment it came to Lorenzo, your eyes would flicker elsewhere like you were avoiding him for some unspeakable reason. At first, he brushed it off, but now? Now it was starting to gnaw at him, his curiosity turning into something like jealousy.

Today, Lorenzo was determined to get some answers.

You were sitting by the lake, your gaze focused on the water as it rippled in the sunlight. Your hands fidgeted with the edge of your robe, a familiar habit you resorted to when you were feeling uneasy.

Lorenzo approached, his footsteps light but purposeful. “Hey,” he greeted, the warmth in his voice causing your heart to stutter.

“Hey,” you mumbled back, keeping your gaze trained on the lake, watching the tiny waves lap against the shore. His presence was close — too close — but you couldn’t bring yourself to look at him.

He sat down beside you, a comfortable distance apart, but the silence that stretched between you was heavy. It wasn’t like your usual silences, where you both existed in a bubble of mutual understanding. No, this one was…tense.

“So,” Lorenzo started after a long moment, his voice casual but tinged with something deeper, “why won’t you look at me?”

You stiffened, fingers halting their restless movements. Your heart jumped into your throat, pulse quickening as his question lingered in the air. You could feel his eyes on you, burning with an intensity that made your skin prickle.

“I—I don’t know what you’re talking about,” you muttered, still refusing to meet his gaze. You stared harder at the lake, as if willing it to swallow you whole.

Lorenzo let out a soft huff, not buying it for a second. “Come on, don’t play dumb. I’ve noticed it, you know? You can look at Theo, Blaise, even bloody Draco when he’s being a prat. But me?” He leaned in slightly, his voice lower, closer. “You won’t even glance my way.”

You swallowed hard, your chest tightening as panic began to creep in. “It’s not… I just don’t like making eye contact,” you said lamely, knowing full well that it wasn’t the whole truth.

Lorenzo let out a low chuckle, though it lacked humor. “Yeah? Then why can you look at everyone else?”

Your heart pounded, and you could feel the heat rising to your cheeks. You were trapped, caught in a web of your own creation. It wasn’t that you didn’t want to look at Lorenzo — quite the opposite. He was…well, Lorenzo. Charming, effortlessly handsome, and always exuding that calm, confident aura that drew people in. And you? You felt like a tangled mess whenever he was around, too self-conscious, too aware of everything. Especially of how much you liked him.

“I—It’s complicated,” you mumbled, still refusing to turn your head in his direction. The lake had become your lifeline, a visual anchor in this awkward, nerve-wracking conversation.

Lorenzo shifted, and you felt the space between you decrease ever so slightly. His knee brushed against yours, sending a jolt of electricity through you. “Complicated?” he echoed, his voice softening, but there was an edge of vulnerability in it. “What’s so complicated about looking at me?”

You clenched your fists in your lap, debating whether to finally admit the truth or keep dodging. But the way his voice softened made your defenses falter. “I… I just get nervous,” you finally confessed, your voice barely above a whisper. “When it’s you, I mean.”

He didn’t say anything right away, and the silence that followed felt suffocating. You risked a glance — a quick, fleeting one — and saw that his expression had shifted, from curiosity to something more tender, more understanding.

“Nervous?” he asked, his tone no longer teasing. “Why?”

You swallowed again, feeling exposed, vulnerable in a way you hadn’t expected. “I—I don’t know, Lorenzo. You’re just…different. It’s hard to explain.”

There was a long pause, and then Lorenzo sighed, though it wasn’t out of frustration. It was more like he was finally understanding something that had been puzzling him for a while. “You like me, don’t you?”

Your breath hitched, and your entire body tensed at his words. It wasn’t a question — it was a statement. One that you had no idea how to respond to.

“I—” you started, but your voice failed you.

Lorenzo, however, didn’t wait for a verbal confirmation. He shifted even closer, his fingers brushing yours in a gesture so gentle it made your heart ache. “You know, you could’ve just told me,” he murmured, a soft chuckle escaping his lips. “I would’ve saved us both a lot of confusion.”

Your eyes were glued to your hands now, the space where your skin touched, your heart thundering in your chest. “I didn’t think… I didn’t know how to say it.”

Lorenzo hummed, his voice soothing in its warmth. “Well, now you don’t have to say anything,” he replied softly. “You just have to look at me.”

Your heart skipped a beat at his words, and you hesitated for a moment longer before finally lifting your gaze. The moment your eyes met his, the world seemed to slow down. His brown eyes, warm and sincere, locked onto yours, and for the first time in what felt like forever, you didn’t feel the urge to look away.

“There,” Lorenzo said, his voice low and almost teasing, “that wasn’t so hard, was it?”

You felt your lips twitch into a small, embarrassed smile, and for the first time, you didn’t need the lake to distract you. Because looking at Lorenzo? It felt right.

“Yeah,” you whispered, your voice soft but filled with something more—relief, maybe even hope. “It wasn’t so hard after all.”

keeping their relationship a secret wasn't easy. y/n, fiercely independent, refused to be just another arm candy on the f1 circuit. nico, ever the private soul, valued his focus. so, stolen glances across crowded paddocks and late-night video calls became their norm.

one scorching bahrain grand prix weekend, nico was in the zone. he'd qualified a surprising p3, and the team buzzed with nervous anticipation. as nico entered the motorhome, his eyes scanned the room, searching for his usual source of calm – y/n. but she was nowhere to be seen.

a knot of worry tightened in his stomach. they'd agreed she wouldn't come to the paddock often, the attention overwhelming for her introverted nature. just then, a flash of movement by the window caught his eye. y/n, her back pressed against the glass, fiddled with a camera, her face flushed a light pink.

y/n shrank back, her cheeks burning even brighter. nico felt a surge of protectiveness. he took y/n's hand, his grip firm yet gentle.

"this," he declared, a hint of pride in his voice, "is my beautiful wife, y/n."

the playful smirk vanished from kevin's face, replaced by genuine surprise. "wife? you never said..."

nico leaned in and kissed y/n softly, the gesture both intimate and public. when he pulled back, a triumphant glint shone in his eyes.

"we like to keep things private," he said, his voice laced with a playful challenge.

y/n, still flustered but undeniably happy, hid a smile behind her hand. the weight of everyone's attention was a little suffocating, but seeing the pride in nico's eyes, the way he held himself a little taller with her by his side, made it all worth it. maybe, just maybe, a little public declaration wouldn't hurt. after all, having nico by her side, as her husband, was a victory lap she wouldn't trade for anything.

tracking down a fresco for fun and profit*

in my ongoing reposting of my entire painting tag, i reached this image:

lovely painting. clear why i reblogged it in 2020. the caption is as follows: "Achille Casanova, The Night (detail), 1894-1897"

whenever i see something described as a detail, i like to look up the full image. for context, and for fun (this is all very fun for me). so i did that here, and found that everything that came up in relation to this image, artist, and title was only this detail specifically. next, i went to the source of the tumblr post, and found that it was a flickr post from a since-deleted user. searching for the artist and title brought me to this instagram post, which mentions the Palazzo Ratta-Pizzardi in Bologna and we were off to the races.

i had a false start in bologna, as i didn't realize that there are multiple palazzo pizzardis in bologna. then naturally i got sidetracked by the Palazzo Rosso, with its gorgeous Zodiac Room.

these frescoes are attributed to Augusto Sezanne, but those in the stairwell are thought to be by our guy Casanova.

anyway, once i got myself into the correct palazzo, i finally found the fresco:

good to know i'm in the right place, but that's not the image i want. (although still a very cool find--it was taken by Pietro Poppi, whose archive dates it to c. 1897, when the frescoes were completed.) i started playing around with various wordings in searches and got myself onto this page, with its very small image of what i was sure was the room with Casanova's frescoes. i plugged it into tineye and got the original, slightly larger version of it:

(important to note that i spent an hour or so trying to access sources from a list i found, hoping there would perhaps be a pdf or even print book with better images in them. and there may be, but none that i could get to from my desk at work.)

i kept at it, and eventually found a pdf about the various pizzardi buildings, including an image of this room with--miracle of miracles--a photographer's name (A. Samaritani). i searched for that, plus bologna, plus fotografia, and found him. poked around on his website and finally FINALLY! i had color photos of the owl bat fresco.

and that's the end of my journey. i didn't find a large image that i could share (aside from the watermarked ones i included here), but that's genuinely a-ok because i had a really good time and also learned a LOT about late 19th/early 20th century italian dec arts, which i didn't even realize was a blind spot for me. over and over, i saw Casanova's frescoes referred to as "Liberty" style, which is soooooo cool because i'd put money on it deriving from Liberty's London. (edit: im right)

Liberty's is a department store which had a very strong British Arts & Craft aesthetic primarily due to the design leadership of Archibald Knox in the 1890s. i doubt that it was known as liberty style at the time--most of the terms we know art movements by were applied decades if not centuries later--but it's still such an interesting connection to me. in part because none of the liberty buildings and frescoes i've looked at today looked particularly "Liberty London." Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau, yes, but Knox and Liberty's had a very strong, distinctive style, and Stile Liberty isn't it.

and speaking of distinctive styles--Bologna has one. the specific vernacular of stile liberty for bologna (and the wider emilia-romagna region) is referred to as "Æmilia Ars," taken from the applied arts society founded by Alfonso Rubbiani of the same name (much like William Morris did in England). the society lasted only 5 years, but the textile arm stayed together longer and was present at several decorative arts fairs in the first decade of the 20th century, including the exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

the palazzo ratta is now part of the municipal health network, so while i do think it's possible to visit and see these frescoes, it's primarily a building with a job (local health authority). but i know a lot more about the bats and owls and the context in which they were made now, and maybe you do too.

OEA Terms - Clinical/Academic vs. Community

This post aims to provide comparisons and sources for OEA community terms and their academic counterparts. This is not a post that serves to say what terms are more valid or not, just a review. I may not be able to find references to everything, so if I say a term isn't clinical and it has been mentioned, feel free to correct me. This is a long one, so buckle in. This may be updated.

Overarching Acronyms

for the sake of clarity, im going to use 'OEA' throughout this post to serve as the general acronym.

RAMCOA - Ritual Abuse, Mind Control, and Organized Abuse

RAMCOA stems from the ISSTD developed special interest group, the "Ritual Abuse Mind Control Organized Abuse Special Interest Group" (RAMCOA SIG) in 2008. [1] This, along with OEA, is the most common acronym used. There is a lot of controversy over this term, and much of the community has begun to switch to OEA.

OEA - Organized Extreme Abuse

From the ISSTD as well, emerging in 2020 as the previous SIG was renamed to "Organized and Extreme Abuse SIG." [2] This is believed to be because of the controversy surrounding the previously named group.

SRA - Satanic Ritual Abuse

An outdated term that comes from the satanic panic era in the 1980s. Much of the content that used this term is conspiracy-like in nature. However, some early OEA research (typically from 1990-2000) and books use this acronym and are genuine, so it requires a lot of critical thinking. [3][4]

RA, SA, CRA, ORA - Ritual Abuse, Sadistic Abuse, Cult (and) Ritual Abuse, Organized Ritual Abuse

These are more casual terms used in the 1990s-early 2000s before RAMCOA was established, when 'Satanic' was no longer accurate, and when there was a search to coin a new overarching term. Despite the name, these terms were used as overarching acronyms for things outside of RA as well. I've included these all in one due to their similarities and/or due to the fact they weren't used frequently. There are also a variety of other terms mentioned that I've noted in one of the sources below.[5, CRA] [6, SA][7, RA as a general term ][8, ORA, review of other terms]

DIDMCSRA - Dissociative Identity Disorder, Mind Control, and Satanic Ritual Abuse

A barely used term from 2016 coined by a community member. It seems to have existed very briefly and didn't extend past a couple of members. However, the community aspect provided is interesting.

MC-Specific Terms

Programming

Programming generally has the same definition between the community and clinicians. It is defined as "systematic torture that blocks the victim’s capacity for conscious processing, and then employs suggestion and/or classical and operant conditioning to implant thoughts, directives, and perceptions in the unconscious mind, often in newly-formed trauma-induced dissociated identities, that force the victim to do, feel, think, or perceive things for the purposes of the programmer." [9]

TBMC/TBCMC - Trauma/Torture Based Mind Control/Trauma Based Coersive Mind Control

TBMC is a term that clinically describes programming. However, within the community, this term can expand to include other types of mind control as well. The earliest mention I can find of this term was in 2007. [9]

Scripts - "Structures."

The term 'Script' is a community term to describe a phenomenon in programming where programmers will utilize certain media to program system structure. I have a whole other post on this. The term Script itself comes from an unreliable source, svalispeaks, but the idea itself is mentioned in literature under terms such as "Structures" of the innerworld. I'm just going to leave a link to my post about it if you want to explore the sources themselves, as this one is complicated.

Side Systems / 'Left' and 'Right' Systems

Sidesystems are a community made term that describes a structure in programmed systems where a set of alters are completely separate from the others, functioning as a completely separate system. In the clinical sense, this is sometimes referred to as the "left" and "right" systems, with one side being full of programmed parts and the other being daily life parts. However, sidesystems don't necessarily have to be to the left or right of each other. I'm also going to link my post that goes into more detail about them, but it doesn't provide any more clinical sources, so just take it how you will.[10, pg 131]

Screen / Cover Memories

Screen Memories are created memories that programmers use to "cover up" the abuse. They use impossible or highly improbable events, for example, an alien abduction, to discredit the victim and hide real memories of abuse. This is also called Cover Memories/Programs, and it is the same within the community. [10, pg 197]

System Reset / Epochal Division

Epochal Division refers to the phenomenon of where major life changes cause systems to replicate some or all of their alters, with the previously existing alters either remaining active or becoming more covert/dormant. OEA survivors sometimes call this a system reset if it derives from programming, though this term is the same as an endogenic coined one and is often frowned upon when used in reference to OEA. This is first documented by Kluft in reference to polyfragmented systems. [11]

System-Hopping

In the OEA sense, system hopping refers to the action of a part traveling from a sidesystem to the main system and vice versa. I am unsure of the origin of this term in OEA spaces, but it seems to be a community-made term that shares the name with an endogenic term. As far as I'm aware, this did not originate as an OEA community term and has existed in endogenic spaces years prior between the years 2001-2003.

Program Names

i won't go through all community terms for specific types of programming, only the most common ones I've seen specifically mentioned in literature or other official sources, as well as any very common within the community. these are not the only possible programs, but this section is already very long. if desired, i can make a separate post going more in detail about all of them. Sources here are triggering and often repeated.

Greek Letters

The greek letter system of programming originated from the community and is not used in clinical literature. Many of the terms originate from very untrustworthy sources (Fritz & Svali) but have expanded to be commonplace. I have also found evidence of Greek letter terms used in the community in 2003 and 2016.

Alpha / Base

The earliest mention of 'Alpha' in reference to programming I can find is from a book I don't consider a reliable source. However, it is described as "base" programming and similar terms clinically. The term refers to newly formed splits that have gone through basic programming (ex. loyalty to the group, following orders).

Backups / Doubles

Backup programs are the presence of programmed parts meant to replace other programmed parts should they fail or be 'disobedient'. Often, these parts will be the exact same as the one they're replacing and receive the same training. Both of these are used as clinical terms, though doubles less commonly. [10, pg 110, pg 144]

Beta / Sexual

The earliest mention of 'Beta' in reference to programming I can find is from a book I don't consider a reliable source. Within the community, this refers to any sexual programming, which is very commonly talked about academically. I'll link one seperate example. [12]

Callback / Re-Contact / Return

Return programs are very much talked about in literature, and all three of the above terms have been used both inside and outside the community. These refer to any programs created to have the victim return to the group/programmers. [13][10][14, pg 115 ]

Delta / Violence

The absolute earliest mention of 'Delta' in reference to programming I can find is from a book I don't consider a reliable source. However, violence programming is referenced in multiple official sources. In the community, Delta programming refers to any programming that revolves around violence towards others. [15]

Epsilon / Nonhuman / Paranormal

Epsilon is the community term for nonhuman programming, or parts that believe they are animals or other nonhuman creatures. This is used for a variety of reasons and doesn't have a specific term, mainly just listed as "parts who believe they are animals/nonhuman."[10, pg 51][14, pg 74 ]

Internal Handlers / Programmers / Enforcers / Organizers

While "Internal Handlers" seems to be more of a community term, Internal Programmers, Enforcers, and Organizers are used in a clinical sense. All of these things refer to varients of programmed parts that internally enforce, replay, and replace programs and programmed parts in some way. These are also often called "higher ups." [10, pg 160, pg 133] [14, pg 63]

Monarch

Project Monarch refers to an alleged subset of Project MKUltra. The idea is created by a conspiracy theorist. However, within the community, "Monarch programming" either refers to: 1. The government-led mind control that occurred during MKUltra/Project Artichoke itself, or 2. Any programming that is government-controlled, government-funded, or that came from a government connected group. It is also referred to as "Monarch-like" programming.

Omega / Suicide / Self-Injury / Lethal

Omega is the community term for all types of Lethal and Self-Injury programming. This is referred to in many different ways academically, but stick to the same general theme. [15]

Organization / Hierarchy

Both in community and clinical senses, there are various types of organizational programming mentioned. Most notably, soldiers, religious alters (angels, demons, etc), and cues such as numbers, shapes or letters, and colors. Usually, these organizations will correspond to a hierarchy. This is used as a way for programmers to more easily organize the system and keep parts in check. There is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to organizational programs, so those with the same type of organization may have completely different meanings to them. [10, pg 49, pg 131 ]

Reporter / Observer

Reporter programs refer to the same thing in community and clinical terms. They describe programmed parts whose duty it is to report back to the group and/or update them on the systems habits. This often ties into callback and routine programs.[13][10]

Routine / Internal Calender

Routine is the community term for programmed behaviors where the victim does things on certain times, days, etc. Often, this pertains to rituals. Routine programming is sometimes also referred to as an 'Internal Calender' in clinical literature and can be linked with callback programming. [14, pg 57] [15]

Scramble and Varients

In this section, I'm including any sort of programming that causes specific disorentation to make this shorter. Scrambling, Flooding, Rapid Switching, Spinning, Trance, Mist, 'Dead Head,' and other terms have been created and used to describe types of programming that cause the victim to become heavily disoriented, confused, foggy, or otherwise not able to think. There are a wide variety of clinical terms used for these types of programming, but the terms most commonly used in the community are scramble, flood, and spin programming. [14 , pg 88][15][16]

Shell

Shell alters are simplistic parts that function as a 'screen' that other alters speak through. This is used to make the victim not seem multiple and mask other symptoms caused by programming and multiplicity. There is a brief mention of "shell" parts in the context of OSDD, and some non-programmed systems may have experiences that are similar. However, a programmed shell is much different from other described experiences. [14, pg 56 ]

Silence / Speaking Programs

I've included all programs that mention voice in this section. Silence and group-specific speaking programs (programmed responses) are the two I've seen mentioned clinically and may tie into reporter programs. Terms such as hyperverbal are also used in community spaces. [15]

Theta / Religious

The absolute earliest mention of 'Theta' in reference to programming I can find is from a book I don't consider a reliable source. However, it has been widely used within the community outside of that. Theta is a community term that refers to any kind of religious programming, which is well documented in the clinical sense, often just referred to as religious programming or specific examples of programmed parts.

Other / Misc Programming

Things like Body Illness Programs, misc Emotional Programs, Recycle and Amnesia programs, and Isolation programs have been listed in sources provided, among many others not listed here. These are the ones I see mentioned less frequently, and thus, I haven't given a full section. If desired, I'll create a specific post going over all of them.

System Types

as a note, i do not think systems who have been through OEA are inherently more complex. as mentioned, i personally disagree with HC-DID and its creator. this is simply grouping terms i've seen together.

C-DID / Complex DID

Complex DID is a term referring to polyfragmented DID. The term is mentioned by Bennett G. Braun and R. P. Kluft. It is not specific to OEA victims, and many use it as an alternative to polyfragmented.

EC-DID / Extremely Complex DID

EC-DID is a term initially coined by R. P. Kluft in reference to polyfragmented systems, very similar to C-DID. It is not an OEA specific term. However, ritual abuse is mentioned as a cause of said complex system structures. [11]

HC-DID / Highly Complex DID

HC-DID is a community-made term coined by someone later outed as a racist and being inappropriate with minors. For the term itself, the words "highly complex" have been used to describe some system structures and cases in literature. However, it is not a separate clinical term itself and was never said exclusively about OEA survivors. The idea that all programmed system structures are highly complex is also incorrect, as there are small systems that have been programmed. Some members of the community still use this term, while others discredit it. Please keep these things in mind when considering using this term.

RA-DID, OA-DID / Ritual Abuse DID, Organized Abuse DID

These are community terms I've seen used as an alternative to HC-DID as an attempt to create a term specific to OEA survivors. These terms are rarely used and are completely community based.

too many thoughts on the new hbomberguy video not to put them anywhere so:

with every app trying to turn into the clock app these days by feeding you endless short form content, *how many* pieces of misinformation does the average person consume day to day?? thinking a lot about how tons of people on social media go largely unquestioned about the information they provide just because they speak confidently into the camera. if you're scrolling through hundreds of pieces of content a day, how many are you realistically going to have the time and will to check? i think there's an unfortunate subconscious bias in liberal and leftist spaces that misinformation is something that is done only by the right, but it's a bipartisan issue babey. everybody's got their own agendas, even if they're on "your side". *insert you are not immune to propaganda garfield meme*

and speaking of fact checking, can't help but think about how much the current state of search engines Sucks So Bad right now. not that this excuses ANY of the misinformation at all, but i think it provides further context as to why these things become so prevalent in creators who become quick-turnaround-content-farms and cut corners when it comes to researching. when i was in high school and learning how to research and cite sources, google was a whole different landscape that was relatively easy to navigate. nowadays a search might give you an ad, a fake news article, somebody's random blog, a quora question, and another ad before actually giving you a relevant verifiable source. i was googling a question about 1920s technology the other day (for a fanfiction im writing lmao) and the VERY FIRST RESULT google gave me was some random fifth grader's school assignment on the topic???? like?????? WHAT????? it just makes it even harder for people to fact-check misinformation too.

going off the point of cutting corners when it comes to creating content, i can't help but think about capitalism's looming influence over all of this too. again, not as an excuse at all but just as further environmental context (because i really believe the takeaway shouldn't be "wow look how bad this one individual guy is" but rather "wow this is one specific example of a much larger systemic issue that is more pervasive than we realize"). a natural consequence of the inhumanity of capitalism is that people feel as if they have to step on or over eachother to get to 'the top'. if everybody is on this individualistic american dream race to success, everyone else around you just looks like collateral. of course then you're going to take shortcuts, and you're going to swindle labor and intellectual property from others, because your primary motivation is accruing capital (financial or social) over ethics or actual labor.

i've been thinking about this in relation to AI as well, and the notion that some people want to Be Artists without Doing Art. they want to Have Done Art but not labor through the process. to present something shiny to the world and benefit off of it. they don't want to go through the actual process of creating, they just want a product. Easy money. Winning the game of capitalism.

i can't even fully fault this mentality- as someone who has been struggling making barely minimum wage from art in one of the most expensive cities in america for the past two years, i can't say that i haven't been tempted on really difficult occasions to act in ways that would be morally bad but would give me a reprieve from the constant stress cycle of "how am i going to pay for my own survival for another month". the difference is i don't give in to those impulses.

tl;dr i hope that people realize that instead of this just being a time to dogpile on one guy (or a few people), that it's actually about a larger systemic problem, and the perfect breeding grounds society has created for this kind of behavior to largely go unchecked!!!

Hi! I’ve been reading a lot of your fics over on AO3. I try to comment on fics that I love, but I’ve been really busy and tired lately and I keep forgetting. So I figured I’d message you here and tell you some of my favourite things about your writing, so that you know your work is appreciated!

1) I love the way you write y/n. You have a perfect balance between creating a character that fits in the world of the story, while still leaving room within their personality for self-identification and self-insert. The character’s balanced, and interesting to read!! I’m invested in her life, not just the other characters.

2) Your vocabulary is amazing!! You use such a wide variety of words, and when you use more niche ones or ones I don’t recognize it doesn’t feel forced or out of place. You seamlessly blend it all together!

3) Your style of writing itself is so wonderful. I’m reading fics for tv shows I’ve never even watched, just because I love the way you write!

4) You balance dialogue and descriptions so well!!

5) PACING!!! I feel like pacing is one of the hardest things to get, and you nailed it!! And I know you nailed it because I never even thought of it. I feel like pacing is kind of like acting— when it’s good, you don’t think about it, and you’ll only notice it if it’s bad.

6) Your stories are so creative! I love the longer fics you’ve written (as well as the one-shots!!) because I don’t always know where they’re going to go!! And yet the endings never feel out of place or unprepared.

7) Your smut is so hot. I’m not sure how to write this respectfully, but seriously, writing smut is so hard and you do it so spectacularly!! It flows so naturally. The tension consistently builds, and it just, fuck. It’s so good.

8) I love your characterization!! You stay true to the source material while adding your own interpretation so it’s fresh and exciting.

9) YOU WRITE SO MUCH. I don’t understand how you’ve written so many fics!!!! I physically can’t comprehend it!!

10) You make the reader over 30 in most of your stuff, which I really like. Your stories feel realistic, they feel plausible!! The world you craft is so amazing.

I always want my y/n’s to have a bit of their own personality/back story/differences. They all do have some similarities, and i think they all end up sharing qualities that I also have, and obviously i want them to still fit into an insert situation for whoever is reading them!

Ooh! I honestly dont know how i do that LOL. I know a lot of the time if im writing for a more eloquently spoken character i try to make sure that they’re actually speaking that way & using words/phrases that fit with them & their age & the situation. Which normally leads to some fancier words for some of our lawyers/politicians lol. Sometimes i do end up searching synonyms and googling til i make sure it fits the context lol.

Omgosh you’re TOO kind. And also you should watch all the shows 😂 i know there’s a lot and a ton of episodes but it’s worth it! (Or at least to watch the eps said characters are in lol)

Ah! Thank you! I try to make it as balanced as possible, esp in series. Or at least make sure i continue the action during conversations. Nothing’s worse than reading something & having a character never put down a glass or turn off a stove burner before the smut starts LOL. Though i so enjoy a random one shot with little to no dialogue, those are fun to write!

Tbh, i generally dont think about pacing all that much when i write. 😂 i think it comes more into play when im looking at an outline or rereading before writing the next couple of chapters. I know Classified Affairs has a LOT happen back to back but its also a much more intense story lol

I wish i could understand how i write so much & i do wish i could still write as frequently as i did years ago. (Wild to think its been FIVE years now😳) but i do have to remind myself that previously my chapters were 1000 words each & now theyre like… 3500-7500 😂

hi! uhh would you be willing to talk more about sacred spaces? lol im really interested if you want to talk about it!

anon. i would love nothing more. i broke out my old books and articles that i had to use in my sacred space class (aka the reason i am the way i am now) just for this. i'm not totally sure how long this is going to get, so bear with me. i will also have sources.

so the first question we really need to answer is: what is sacred space?

we tend to think of sacred spaces as one of two things. 1.) religious space 2.) solemn places (like monuments, for example--more on this later!)

either way, a sacred space tends to do one major thing: it evokes an emotion. a feeling. you know when you step into a sacred space, how the air around you shifts. but why? what is so special about church? or the cemetery? or a memorial? what defines a sacred space?

short answer: depends.

long answer: well...

so one of the main books that i'm pulling from is called The Sacred and the Profane by Mircea Eliade (who is, btw, one of my favorite authors on the topic--as well as the first academically. it is not an easy read. it's confusing and dense, don't let the page count fool you. it's a short book with a lot packed into it.) ANYWAY. eliade introduces the concept of "sacred time." he defines sacred time as thus: "by its very nature sacred time is reversible in the sense that, properly speaking, it is a primordial mythical time made present. every religious festival, any liturgical time, represents the reactualization of a sacred event that took place in a mythical past, 'in the beginning.'" it is also important to note here the definition of a liminal space. a liminal space is, by definition(!), a transitional space; a threshold. it is a space that when you enter, you are different when it comes time for you to exit. something happens in that liminal space that changes you. so sacred time--the return to a mythical past--is marked by one especially important thing: repetition.

part of this sacred time is what eliade calls the "time of origin" and is defined as the "ritual repetition of the gods' creative act." religious festivals are held the same time of year, every year. (this, of course, can vary depending on religion--example: easter is not the same date every year, but the easter sunday service is essentially the same every year.) this is known as imitatio dei. an imitation of god, trying to return to this mythical past or origin or miracle or something. sacred space is marked by repeated ritual--our sacred time

but this is only part of our answer.

eliade also introduces the concept of the axis mundi, which translates literally into 'world axis' or 'center of the world', but in the terms that eliade presents us with, it refers to any place that connects the human and the divine. for example, the altar in a church would be considered the axis mundi.

it doesn't always have to be religious, though. in sacred space, it often is religious, but it doesn't have to be. example: think about how a home is set up. older homes have a fireplace, because this is where families would gather around. this has shifted over the years to become the tv. either way, it's often the center of the room, or where people gather around the most. (one of the papers i wrote in this class was on the fact that the disney parks often have an icon and this is what would be considered the axis mundi of each park)

speaking of not always being religious; back to monuments!

i don't have enough time to really dive into it, but the book Shadowed Ground by Kenneth Foote delves really deep into (specifically) america's monuments and how they have become sacred spaces over time and what makes them sacred. i'll have to find it, because i apparently did Not have this article on hand so i have to search for it once again but! there's an academic article about how monument mall is set up in washington d.c. to specifically evoke these feelings of solemnity etc etc. it's in the very design of it.

tl;dr - sacred space is often created through the repetition of rituals, religious or secular, there is often a liminal space or threshold that we cross, and, sometimes, sacred spaces are intentionally created to evoke the feeling without the ritual--as is the case with a lot of memorials or monuments.

Often on tumblr, users will posts screenshots of other tumblr posts, twitter posts, and so on. Users rarely link to those post. So I have taken it upon myself to find the origins of these screenshots.

HOW I FIND POSTS.

I use engines like google, duckduckgo, or others. Generally, I use exact unique phrases from an original post. For example:

Also, I can apply filters to winnow out the chaff. For example, if I am looking for a post of reddit, I can use the syntax site:reddit.com to only return results from reddit. That would exclude results from tumblr, wikipedia, and other websites.

Most websites have a  native search function you can use to browse their contents. However, depending on the website, the search function may not be useful. For example, youtube’s search function is notoriously unreliable for finding more obscure videos, even if you have an exact title for the video

Native search engines built into a website have their own quirks. Tumblr on the mobile wensite allows searches for post types and dates. A forum I use called “spacebattles” allows search queries for posts made by specific users. 

GENERAL TIPS:

Keep search queries and links to posts typed up in a place you can easily access. It could be a google doc, and email you send to yourself, anything. This will allow you to copy-paste things into a search engine rather than remembering and typing up many items.

Get as much information as you can from the screenshot. Does the screenshot give the website of origin? Do any comments on the screenshot give context? Do you have any definite dates from the screenshot? Things of that nature.

Use filters. Most search engines have filters you can use to exclude search results. Above, I mentioned a filter used to only include results from a specified website. Most search engines also have filters for dates, regions, and so on.

and i want to take a second to acknowledge that part of this frustration seems to be stemming from the compulsive nature of this environment

we can't opt-in to the page-wide ads, we can't toggle a switch or click a button to enable notifications, it's assumed, it's a given, it's another data point on a big board that a company can bundle and sell

but!! it is possible to disengage with a lot of this. the tools are there. everyone and their dog knows about ad-blockers (do you know about ad-blockers? do you know how easy it is to add an extension to firefox that will block ads on the internet?) but op, did you also know that you can turn off the windows search functionality on your desktop? you can change it so it only shows you local files. you can turn off auto-saving on office programs. you can disable cortana permanently, you can delete edge. computers are a tool!! and they can be changed to accommodate your needs

personally, im a big foss person. i love non-corporate, open-source alternatives to paywalled bullshit. i use LibreOffice at home, i use Linux on my laptops, i dont pay for a spotify account...

like im not making this post to brag or anything im just saying it's possible to disengage with these systems

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.

I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.

Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.

I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.

I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.

Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.

I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.

My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.

I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?

No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse.
