RECENT MUSIC:

Goat Girl's motorway is for the girlies into... the indie girlies. Music to reflect on your life to.

JESSIE WARE!!!!!!! & ROMY's LIFT YOU UP! Feel good dance track. Just vibrant and joyful. What a lovely way to end Pride month.

Normani FINALLY released her album. Not mindblowing (and some of the teaser versions of songs are better) but it's enjoyable to listen to all the way through. Highlights are "All Yours" which feels luxurious, "Take my Time" which is sweet and pleasant, "Insomnia" which has a sprinkling of Daft Punk in some of the vocoding, and a more energetic "Little Secrets" which closes the album out. This is a solid debut which promises greater things down the line. Good sensibilities, just needs a bit more oomph.

Spinning off of that, check out "Endless Night" by Maeta.

Tove Lo & SG Lewis are back at it again with a mini EP! Let Me Go OH OH sounds the way Kylie's Love at First Sight MV looks, if that makes sense. Busy Girl is for Cunts on the Runway. Heat is for dancing at the club. Desire is a club mix track that is generic and yet perfectly calculated--like a chocolate chip cookie made up premium ingredients.

Megan Thee Stallion has an album out and narrowing this down to a handful of tracks is hard, even with singles excluded! Rattle is scathing and yet too cool for the haters. Down Stairs DJ combined with Where Them Girls At has convinced me she needs to collab with Cupcakke*. Worthy is summery and poppy. Spin with Victoria Monet will have you doing body rolls without even realizing, Otaku Hot Girl is a fun sample... I forgive her for insulting Sasuke avis I know where she's coming from lol.

Nayeon's album is kinda hit or miss to me but I love ABCD's bigger than life energy and the dance break in the MV. HalliGalli is just like refreshing fruit punch on a hot day

Despite not feeling the title track, Red Velvet did pull through with some music you can just float around to, Last Drop and Night Drive would be nice to wade into the ocean and stare up at the stars to. Bubble has an almost 80s Jpop veneer to it. And Love Arcade gives the album some energy it very much needed, lol. Not my fave RV project but not the bummer I expected!

She, this blog's namesake, has a new mini album! Spectral Touch and With You are expansions of She's Chiptune sound but maybe with some appeal you might find in Kavinsky's music--not the same sound at all but that sort of "driving at night through neon lights" type vibe.

The Used has a new album out, it's more of the same, but I loved the video game trailer bombasticness of Depression Personified and the return to an older whininess (said with fondness) in Before I Leave. Emos, check it out.

Catharsis by 9mm Parabellum Bullet is more rock music. Japanese and surprisingly melodic, this track is haunting. Maybe Buck-Tick enjoyers should check it out.

If you liked the Tove Lo ep, check out Baddy on the Floor by Jamie xx. Honey Dijon absolutely elevates this track into transcendence.

Amaarae said "Fountain Baby Part 2!!!" this! is a swooning afrobeats track, wanted is a song that crawls to you and up your body and grabs your hips, and sweeeet is such a natural evolution of Fountain Baby. This whole project is worth a listen!

TuNGSTeN is by Hiroyuki Sawano (TECHNICALLY a different project than my other shout out) and it's just evocative and makes me clutch at my chest but also wanna run.

Power of Two by Victoria Monet. Idk why she's doing a Star Wars song but... fuck, she hit it out of the fucking park. It's like of Kendrick/Sza's All the Stars had a dark, more cosmic child.

Lynch. has some more Japanese metalcore for anyone interested. Standouts are the frantic Un Deux Trois and A Fierce Blaze while the track Remains might appeal more to the crowd who wants more of the melodic bits that Catharis had. Buck-Tick fans I'm saying try out Remains. Not as good but you'll see the vibe

Getting no Sleep by Tinashe is a surprising follow up to Nasty but suuch a good follow up to her album BB/Angel and its more cerebral elements.

"Know You Did" by bongjeingan is a korean indie rock song not afraid to get WEIRD with it. This is a song that is everything all at once. Goes surprisingly hard at the end.

Somethin Bout You by The Knocks and Holiday87 ft Betsy feels like a dream of the 80s had by someone who passed out at the club after too much fruity drinks.

"Security" by Raleigh Ritchie (AKA LOUIS FROM IWT!V!) is a a more lowkey track than some on this but the lyrics are relatable and I remain charmed by his blunt writing style--he gets to the heart of the matter and carves at it.

3. Favorite scene in the entire series?

It's a tie between Steve bursting into Jonathan's house and Dustin commandeering Steve into helping with Dart, both moments I love for the same reason. My faaaavorite thing in genre fiction is when something happens that completely bucks the conventions and expectations of the genre, and it really feels to me that Steve bursts through the script he was supposed to a part of at the end of s1 into a completely new story, and that kind of transformative self-authorship just makes me giddy. Likewise, at the beginning of s1, you would never expect Steve and Dustin to be the greatest team-up of the show, and Dustin shouting to Steve to come join him similarly feels like Dustin looking across the margins of the page he's on and going uh, yeah, I'm yoinking this guy into the story. I just LOVE it.

7. Favorite couple? (canon or non-canon)

Steddie, obviously. I loooooove that they're both such classic character archetypes on their own and how interestingly they play with the standards of those archetypes, and then when you put them in conversation with each other, all those character elements just play so WELL off each other. I love that the little we have of them to work with is SO powerful, and while of course I would have enjoyed more canon material to play with, I also deeply love that there isn't a lot of constraint from canon and how much freedom and invention that necessitates in fandom works.

8. Favorite weapon/power?

I mean, it's obviously the nail bat, right? Like is there even another choice? (I'm also biased because I made my own for a cosplay and it turned out SO well lol, so that's definitely a part of it. But also its just SO iconic, of course it's the nail bat).

listen i'm about to go info-dump all my wayne headcanons in your inbox so thats the ONLY REASON im not sharing them all here because i LOVE HIM, but for these purposes I'm gonna go with Tommy Hagan. I think he provides such a fun chance to explore obsession, jealousy, possessiveness, power fantasies, and toxicity in just a dirty, delicious way, I'm just fascinated by it. It's a character archetype I think of as the Mrs. Danvers, and I feel like that character's relationship with a main character often provides the most fascinating depth and contrast to other relationships in the MCs life. I put Izzy Hands from OFMD and Kavinsky from the Raven Cycle in this category - they all have that sublimated/gothic/noir/Celluloid Closet queer(coding) flavor to them that's just riveting to chew on.

20. Something that you really want to happen in season 5?

I think the psychic energy/ghosts/souls/whatever of the UD's victims (esp Eddie) should be trapped in a dungeon, and the smoke monster/mind flayer should form into a dragon, please and thank you

My husband witnessed my reactions while reading the series. He thinks Kavinsky is so badass with his Mitsubishi 🙄 I consumed book 1-3 so fast and it took me over a month to finish TRK and he was so concerned. He asked me daily if I was going to read it.

Yes, I am definitely going the read “the Ronan trilogy” (as my husband calls it). I am so interested as to why everyone is suddenly in love with Declan. However, I’m going to take some time off. As much I want to jump right to it, I want to properly “mourn” trc (and Gansey) and read some fics.

P.S. to your friend’s point, yes, one does not simply get over RCGIII :)

hi friend, i feel like im being annoying bc i keep coming in here but between the bad date which i still haven’t told u ab and tn, I’ve had the worst week . i need to tell u ab it (it’s not heavy dw, i hate trauma dumping. it’s silly in hindsight but still sad)

my dad deleted his amazon account just to piss me off bc i was the only person who used it. my kindle was linked to it and when he deleted his account, he deleted everything from my kindle with it too. I’ve had the same kindle since i was 13. so for almost 9 years, my entire life was basically documented on it. i had a plug-in where i could doodle on the pages as well as just highlight and annotate them. when i was 13 I would hide under my covers and doodle over every peter kavinsky quote i read and literally my entire girlhood was documented on that. like from 13-22 (now), everything was on there. i know there was always a risk of this happening but it’s legit been a decade and nothings happened and nothing would happen unless the main amazon account was purposefully deleted. if he did it by accident it would be a diff story but it was on purpose, he was drunk and annoyed and decided to piss me off by doing it and im just so sad

my mum feels bad and offered to buy me new books on there but i don’t even want that. those memories were priceless and now they’re all gone :(

There are major spoilers ahead for The Raven Cycle and some for the Dreamer trilogy. Ronan has the ability to take objects or beings (or sometimes entire forests) out of his dreams. There's no real limit to what he can take--if it works in the dream, it works in real life, beyond the bounds of reason or physics--but he must be on a ley line to use the power, and he'll die if he leaves the line for too long. He guards this secret ferociously, so there is no chance your muse would know about it unless they're a fellow canon in the know or it's been heavily plotted ahead of time. What they are welcome to notice is that he's often surrounded by improbable objects or that he constantly hums with dream energy if they're supernaturally sensitive to that sort of thing.

I typically pull my portrayal from some time after he's graduated from Aglionby, while Adam is away at college, and Ronan is fucking around dreaming things, taking care of the Barns, and generally being a menace. I take some elements from the Dreamer trilogy, including Ronan's friendship with Jordan and their investigation into sweetmetals (made objects or art that keep dreamed things awake even after their dreamers die, otherwise they fall into an unwakeable sleep). In addition to the intricate tattoo on his back, Ronan also has the chainmail tattoo on one arm that's made of sweetmetal ink to keep him awake off a ley line. However, I typically don't include Ronan's friendship with Bryde, their bout of ecoterrorism, or the plot with the Moderators.

Per canon, he's a hostile jerk to most people, so please do not interact if you're not prepared for that. Likewise, your muses are welcome to respond in kind, since being an asshole has consequences. This is by no means a comprehensive list, and I can roll with most muses as far as basic interactions. I’m happy to ship Ronan with other TRC characters and OCs/fandom crossovers based on chemistry, but unless they’re on my OTP list, they need plotting and interaction first. There is never any pressure to ship with me, even if they’re on my list.

Please note that I write Ronan as homosexual, as supported by his canon, and I only ship him with male muses, with the exception of a polycule that includes Blue Sargent (because imo the canon also supports all of them being in love with each other). i was tagged in another music-related thing! i’m still working for a couple hours so bear with me 😅

i believe the prompt was the first ten songs on a shuffled playlist, and primarily i use just one playlist like for when i go driving (usually when im listening to stuff at home i just search for what im feeling and i don’t even use my playlist adhgkjdf) SO here i have the following:

1. Livin’ Thing by ELO - this is from their 1975 album which i adore because it also has Telephone Lines, but Livin’ Thing is also one of the ones everyone knows lol the whole album is heavy in the string section, but especially Livin’ Thing, it’s wonderful

2. Zombie (feat. Morgan Phalen) by Kavinsky - i really love this whole album and honestly Zombie is one of my favorites on it anyway, i always crank it up

3. Forest Fire by a-ha - this is from their 2015 album i think, and actually it’s one of two that are on this shuffled list lol

4. Laredo Tornado by ELO - from their 1974 album which is so much fun because it’s like a concept album (i know i’ve talked about it on here before) and THIS is actually my Eridunis song 🥰 or one of them!

5. Shadow Endeavors by a-ha - also from their 2015 album! tbh i tend to skip this song (sorry Mr. Harket) because it gets stuck in my head whether i listen to it or not agkfjkd i still love it though

I’m Leaving You by Jeff Lynne’s ELO - he made this in 2015 after getting the rights to ELO, the whole album is really great. i couldn’t listen to most of the songs on this album for a long long time because when i first listened, i was in my first year of university, and a lot of the songs are very nostalgic-sounding, so i was having a hard time listening to them without thinking about home and growing up and stuff. but now i listen to this album all the time!

9. Big Wheels by ELO - from their 1977 album (yes i’m listing these years off from memory, i’m that obsessed) AND part of what was called the “Concerto for a Rainy Day” (which was side 3 of the original album release) comprised of i BELIEVE “Standin’ in the Rain,” “Big Wheels,” “Summer and Lightning,” and “Mr. Blue Sky,” all in that order (and the songs lead into each other when you listen to them in that order!), and Big Wheels is sort of the most somber one out of all four but still really beautiful, highly highly recommend listening to the whole suite

10. Stuck on the Puzzle by Alex Turner - odd one out lol but this song i actually heard in my friend’s car several years ago on a short drive, and i had asked about it and found out it’s one of the Arctic Monkeys guys so that’s fun! and i loved the song so i’ve had it on my playlist ever since!

like the visions they all saw and midway through the book Ronan was like "oh yeah that was fake visions lol" WHYYYY SAY THAT? Those visions were bringing such an interesting form of tension and its like can you change fate or are you doomed to repeat it. They should have grappled with it first and then at the end have it revealed and then the tension would stay. As soon as Ronan mentioned it I knew Gansey wouldn't actually die

also! the camero hubcap that was in the woods! And the car never actually crashing, Ronan saying that he assumed they would have crashed it here eventually and then being like "wow i guess we will have future adventures that help it end up here :)" THIS IS BAD AND LAME!!! its a chekhov's gun basically kind of. Don't tell me that off screen the gun will eventually get fired i want the ends tied up!!!!

i get that after the first book it had been awhile and u changed ur mind but TOUGHHHHHHH im sorry you pulled a starwars on us like in the recent trilogy where the directors switched and then the first guy came back and he was like ugh this sucks let me undo everything

I simply do not believe that Ronan had been in love with Adam this whole time and i know this because i was purposefully looking for subtext the whole time because I knew that Ronan was gay but I didn't know who with because in art I had seen of trc previously the other boys generically blended in and Ronan with a shaved head was the only one to stand out

So i was focusing SO HARD on his interactions with Gansey and Noah and Adam and literally while reading the first book hold on let me grab my quote

my initial thoughts on all the pairings 50 pages into the first book:

"if blue ends up with Gansey we riot bc he's SOOO ANNOYING AND PRETENTIOUS if she has to fix him I'll scream. But on the other hand I do love a man with a special interest so maybe he will GROW ON ME" (im sorry gansey i love you now i was wrong, your neurodivergent hyperfocusing did win me over)

"If Ronan ends up with Noah that's a gay cop-out because Noah has no personality he is like Dopey from the 7 dwarves" (i was a noah hater the whole first book bc i was like HE DOESNT EVEN DO ANYTHINGGGG but then turns out that was the point. lolll sorry noah.

"Ronan and Gansey... they're both into supernatural stuff a lot and Gansey cares about him so maybe it could work. Two annoying people together making eachother worse <3" AGAIN SORRY GANSEY!

but after all that incredible analysis all i had to say about ronan and adam was that i couldn't really see them together. And after the "adam suddenly sucks now" arc in book two i could tell adam and ronan were gonna end up together and it was just yes girl give us nothing until midway end of book 3 or whatever. Maggie just told us that Ronan had been into adam for awhile and i guess it was so but i didn't see it and I EXCEL at picking up gay subtext. I will MAKE MY OWN gay subtext. For example, Ronan and Kavinski VERY QUEER CODED. Even though Kavinski sucked that was interesting and I did feel that emotionally and it was engaging. And honestly Ronan and Gansey I could've felt that and been interested. But Adam and Ronan's arguing didn't have enough tension for it to be flirting idk Ronan was just kinda mean with random streaks of kindness like he is with the rest of his friends. So it felt RUSHED and unearned and i did not care about them. It felt like adam got the leftovers after Blue rejected him

also I will never forgive Adam for his "i don't listen when women tell me no" arc in book two HE WOULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT! EVEN WHEN THE FOREST MADE HIM ANGSTY HE WOULD NOT DO THAT! He is a gentleman he would not complain that Blue didn't want to kiss him or pressure her into it. SO ICKY

Gansey thoughts..... the embodiment of autistic rizz. I love how he bewitches all his friends to be obsessed and a little in love with him bc hes such a nerd and believes in things so deeply. Seeing through his eyes was key in me understanding him and I think he could've dated anyone in his friend group successfully

the friend group dynamic is SOO FUNNY i literally will never be over how Adam and Gansey were having their quiet rivalry over Blue and their inner struggle of being unable to kiss her and meanwhile Noah and her made out. DID SHE EVER TELL THEM. Not that she owed it to them. But i thought that was a very cute and realistic first kiss scene i liked how awkward it was and that they were talking about it being kinda bad. Better i dare say then her and gansey's kiss... but i'm so biased kissing doesn't do much for me usually i think it's icky. Except sometimes i change my mind. I am fickle this way. BUT YEAHHH GET IT NOAH

I said this before on instagram but like. I do think there is analysis to be had on the queerness of trc, not in a homosexual way but in the relationship unit that the group has. Like when Gansey says he can't give anyone special treatment because everyone is sensitive and loves him a lot and he can't pick favorites. And then he feels like he has to be in the closet and secretive about his straight relationship. And meanwhile Ronan never hides or feels secretive about his gay relationship

And everyone around him always makes comments about Gansey dating one of his guy friends (kavinski commenting on Gansey and Ronan, last book Helen asks if Gansey is sleeping with Adam) and it's not necessarily judgemental it's like, it would be more obvious if he was with a guy than if he was with a girl. But above that it's like their platonic relationship is held to a higher level than romantic ones. Which makes it kind of a bummer when the friend group splits up into two couples who go separate ways at the end of the book and also noah is gone. BUT i digress. Interesting and fascinating. Certainly queer analysis to be had there.

Henry Chen. I liek him. I have mixed feelings about whether he feels like an Asian stereotype or not. But I will allow that community to speak on it maybe I am thinking too hard about it

TRC is a very white book but it talks about classism which I think is an important topic and one that we often don't look at separated from race

Virginia is such a good location for that discussion, I grew up there and i didn't even realize but like. If you are from Northern virginia (near DC like Gansey) you will not say "I'm from Virginia" you will say "I'm from NOVA" (northern VA) or "I'm from outside of DC". And the intent is to be like "I'm not like a southerner my politics aren't conservative that doesn't define me" BUT it's harmful you know... to assume that south equals backwards and conservative.... separating ourselves like that indicates an underlying feeling of superiority and then its like ok maybe you should unpack that

so I'm quite happy with the classism themes throughout the book they are accurate and done well.

we kind of lost the thread of her feeling like an outsider bc she couldn't do fortune telling magic like her family so her learning she did have powers felt like unnecessary

she already found her worth as part of the group i thought. Like being part of a whole is just as important as being cool on your own

maybe she just liked trees. doesn't mean she has to be a tree

whatever

and gansey being brought back felt kinda anticlimactic too. bring him back wrong. or wronger. Make them suffer without him some first. it was resolved too fast to feel anything

i have thoughts about the raven cycle. but im keeping it secret until rachel finishes. godspeed rachel if ur watching i know school is hard. We shall celebrate once u survive it and read once more

maybe its bc i am a villain lover but i will never forgive people for shaming ppl who like villains so hard that it causes the entire conversations around those villains outside of fiction to be toxic to the point that it completely kills the character
